He's fighting extradition.
Can you imagine, Roman Polanski, finally being brought back to the United States? Read the latest on the Polanski case by clicking here. Can you imagine the scene when, I guess if, that actually happens? Guess what? As of today, it's a step closer to happening. 31 years ago, he pleaded guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl in Los Angeles, but he never did the time. Instead, he skipped town. The facts of the original case are keeping the story in the headlines, which is a problem for Polanski. Like the fact that he got the little girl drunk and got her high with quaaludes. Polanski was busted last month when he went to Switzerland for a film festival. He's desperately trying to fight extradition, but experts say it doesn't look good. As of today, the U.S. has officially filed papers to have Polanski brought back to face justice. We'll keep you posted.

This clip is tragedy plus outrage plus allegations of corporate greed and indifference. American oil giant Chevron (relatively new parent company of Texaco) is being blamed for a major ecological emergency in another country. A rainforest in an area the size of Rhode Island in northern Ecuador is struggling after decades of oil drilling by, among other oil interests, Texaco. Swaths of land are useless. More than a thousand people have died from cancers blamed on the crude oil introduced to the drinking water and ecosystem. This is bad. Chevron is being sued for $27 billion. Rick Sanchez interviews two women here. It's the quest for justice and accountability on one side, and a sympathetic, but defiant corporation on the other. We want to know: how does this issue grab you? After you hear both sides of this argument, does a big bad oil giant still look so big and bad? Leave a comment below. This clip is from Rick's exclusive, web-only, commercial-free "post-show show" called The Conversation Continues. You did not see this on TV. It's Rick continuing his discussion with Andy Bichlbaum, the man behind a well-planned phony news conference aimed at embarrassing the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It worked. Oh, and check out Rick's daily 15-minute interview segment The Conversation Continues. It's every day at 4 PM ET. Click here for the link. Filed under: Clips From The Show October 20, 2009

You gotta admit: these guys pulled off a pretty elaborate prank! The U.S. Chamber of Commerce called a news conference Monday at the National Press Club. It was attended by several newspaper reporters and television camera crews. What they announced sent shock waves through those attending. The man who stood behind the podium announced that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, long opposed to ANY action on climate change, had changed its stance, and would now drop opposition to the Boxer-Kerry climate change bill. Some news networks interrupted regular programming, and breathlessly treated the announcement as BREAKING NEWS. But it was a fake. Read a CNN blog about it here. Fake news conference. Actors pretending to be newsmakers. Real reporters. Real embarrassing. In this clip you'll see these pranksters busted by an ACTUAL member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Also, Rick interviews the man who pulled off a major GOTCHA. Why did he do it? What statement was he trying to make? Watch. Filed under: Clips From The Show Posted: 06:33 PM ET
There's news, and there's analysis, right? Here's the news: An American man, a scientist, was busted in an international sting. Stewart Nozette thought he was in contact with Israeli operatives, and thought he was in the process of selling them secrets. In reality, he was in contact with the FBI, and now he is in jail. It's a story we've basically heard before. But read that paragraph again. He thought he was selling secrets to the ISRAELIS. Aren't they our allies? Why would a spy (or wannabe spy like Stewart Nozette) have to sell information to a friendly nation? Get this: it happens all the time. Governments (including ours) spy on almost all other governments. This is a fascinating clip. Rick Sanchez talks about Rozette's case with Peter Earnest, who is not only the Executive Director of the International Spy Museum in Washington D.C., he's also a former CIA operative. The self-titled "Toughest Sheriff In America" makes news again. This time, it's his outright refusal to comply with a specific order from Washington banning his department from making immigration arrests on behalf of the Federal Government. A specific order! He's not allowed to do it! What does Sheriff Joe Arpaio do? He spends the weekend rounding up people in Maricopa County, checking their immigration status, releasing those who can prove their legal immigration status, and arresting the rest. Rick asks him to explain himself. Sheriff Joe says it's his law enforcement deprtment and he runs it the way he sees fit. Look through this blog. You'll find SEVERAL clips of Rick and Sheriff Joe dueling, debating, and stepping-over-each-other arguing over the balance between civil rights and headstrong police work. Watch this clip. Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he doesn't need the federal government's blessing to round up people he thinks are illegal. Filed under: Clips From The Show October 16, 2009

Maricopa County's top lawman, the "Toughest Sheriff In America" (that's what he calls himself) is in a staredown with the U.S. federal government. Sheriff Joe Arpaio was allowed to make immigration arrests on behalf of the federal government until recently, when ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) stripped him of his authority to do so. ICE says they have a problem with the way Sherrif Arpaio does business in their name. "Sheriff Joe" says that won't slow him down, that he'll drive people he calls "illegals" to the border himself if he has to, and in fact, it's time for a showdown. In this clip, I talk to John Morton, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security in charge of ICE. Topic: Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his apparent disregard for directions coming from Washington.

Earlier this week we provided quotes attributed to Rush Limbaugh to illustrate why some people and players felt that Limbaugh was too divisive to be an NFL owner. One of these quotes, which was in a column in the St. Louis Post Dispatch and in a book largely about conservatives, was refuted by Limbaugh. We have been unable to independently confirm that quote. We should not have reported it and for that, I apologize. I feel it is important to hold folks accountable when they make mistakes, and that should include myself and my team.

What is this, a "Blackface Renaissance"? Singers and dancers in blackface on Australian television made news when it offended visiting Harry Connick Jr. Otherwise we might have never known of it. By the way, the show's host apologized. Today, we saw a white model in the French issue of Vogue magazine painted black. C'mon...really? We want to know from you: is this offensive, or is every form of artistic expression open for interpretation? Don Lemon sat in for Rick Sanchez this day, and asked that very question of the editor of Jezebel.com. Watch the clip. Leave a comment. Filed under: Clips From The Show October 12, 2009

This is a tricky concept to get your head around. Watch this clip before you make your mind up. Registered sex offenders in the state of Georgia (and several other states) have to follow very strict guidelines regarding where they're allowed to live after returning to society. For example: in Georgia, a convicted sex criminal may not live within a certain distance from a school, a church, a playground, or anywhere where minors congregate. Is that harsh? You'd better believe it. But as one state lawmaker says in this clip, "We didn't design this law with comfort and convenience in mind. We designed it with safety in mind." Brooke Baldwin met and interviewed a man who is essentially homeless because he's struggling to find a place to live where he will be compliant with the law. It's tough to sympathize. And I'm not asking you to. But the story and the law is fascinating. Tell me what you think after you watch the clip. Filed under: Clips From The Show |
