Fidel Castro began ruling Cuba after he led the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista in 1959.

Afterward, Juanita Castro stood by her older brother, even working to support him and helped raise money for his political causes.

But things change.

Juanita Castro talks to Rick Sanchez in this clip. To say she's estranged from her brothers Fidel and Raul is an understatement. She hasn't spoken to either of them in more than 40 years.

Now, she explains that she actually was in contact with, and in cooperation with the CIA, and worked against her brother as he brought Cuba closer to Communism.

Rick also asks her: if her brother dies tomorrow, would she return to Cuba to attend his funeral?

Okay, I am impressed; you are an established Cuban-American, bilingual News Reporter. Pero, digame, do you not know that Juanita Castro is an extremely savy, post-revolutionary political analyst who, by her own deductions of critical thought, formed opinions that dissented against that of those around her and brought her to the United States more than FIFTY years ago – 5 – 0 – years – as in more than half a century ago – and you speak to her as if she were a unilingual, three year old child?
You Completely Disrespected This Woman.

I have been a diehard follower of our president. From volunteering, to campaigning and voting.
But i need to say that he is losing me and my family if he continues to try to please everybody in his policies. He is appearing weak when he has to change his positions to try and please the world.
He has a mandate when we voted him in and he should use it. Iraq, quantanomo, energy and mostly healthcare, he appears to be on the fence, and trying to please all.
He cannot please all, am sure he knows that. And if he does not do anything with the majority he enjoys right now and pass his major initiatives, he can kiss second term bye bye.
Please pass this to my president.
Thanks

Excellent interview, thank you!

leb   November 5th, 2009 4:42 am ET

If she has been in the USA for so many years, why wasn't she able to do this interview in English? That's pathetic.

A. Smith   November 5th, 2009 6:29 am ET

Isn't it sad that a evil agency like America's CIA would ask someone's mother if they would help them murder their son?

Such disgusting and outrageous behavior is sadly the norm for the excess's and out of control CIA.

Like a rabid lawless Dog, The CIA should be disbanded and heaped with dishonor.

The CIA routinely thumbs its nose at White House attempts to control their actions and ongoing black programs.

The CIA routinely misleads congressmen and senatorial security members on its black projects and ongoing programs which greatly impact the lives of all American Citizens at home and abroad.

The CIA has lost all moral and ethical authority and has no reflection whatsoever of America Values and American Hopes for the World.

Like a rabid lawless Dog, The CIA should be disbanded and heaped with dishonor.

I totally agree with Fernando. Where did you learn to Speak Spanish? Did you not learn to conjugate using "Usted" when you are addressing someone who is older than you? You are an insult to all Spanish speakers!

Mace   November 5th, 2009 8:39 am ET

Rick, could you please just let people finish their sentences? It's incredibly irritating to watch an interviewer not letting somebody else finish a single sentence throughout a whole interview.

Anastasia   November 5th, 2009 10:40 am ET

This moderator unfortunately has no idea how to 'moderate". the interview with Fidel Castro's sister was absolutely appalling. They could at least have gotten a live translator and not have him interrupt her every five seconds. It came off as rude, confusing and completely unprofessional. The "i don't want to waste too much time" remark was unnecessary - time was wasted only by his frequent interruptions. Are there so very few speakers of Spanish in the US that the job has to be done bythe same person who is conducting the interview ?

Luis   November 5th, 2009 11:03 am ET

The topic of the interview is relevant and quite interesting, and it is certainly close to your heart, but the format of the interview was quite irresponsible.

Not sure if you are a certified translator, but at many times you completely misrepresented what Juanita was saying. It was simply not an accurate account of her words, politics aside.

Despite you being bilingual, it would have been more appropriate to have a simultaneous translator, so that what the person is actually trying to say is communicated as they meant it. Obviously it is difficult to interview and translate at the same time!

Further, it was simply difficult and annoying to follow the conversation,

This concerns health care and the deficit. I saw the other day that mitch mcconnel was advocating that the same tax deductions for health care that businesses get should be extended to everybody. Has anybody calculated the affect this would have on the deficit. Some quick figures as a rough estimate would be 80 million families receiving an average 3000 dol;lar deduction at the 15% tax bracket would result in a tax loss of 36 billion per year. That would be 360 billion for ten years without lowering medical costs or providing any significant relief to most low or middle income. The primary beneficiaries of such a plan would be upper income people. Perhaps you could take a look at this proposal as it looks like Mcconell hasn't got a clue as to what he is proposing. How does he propose to pay for this tax break?

I have to wonder what her motivation was for possibly "cooperating" with the CIA and what her motivation is now for coming on TV. Is she running out of money or something? Was she threatened by the CIA? There has to be some motivation and I am just curious as to what that motivation is.

I find that your confusion on whether John Boehner, the minority leader of the House, is a representative or a senator, while trying to ridicule him about attributing words from the the Declaration to the Constitution is truly ironic. You should know better, just as he should know better. I thought that after trying to spear Rush Limbaugh a couple of weeks ago you would be more careful about dishing out ridicule to those that oppose your points of view. I suggest you just read the news as they do on BBC and stop trying to be cute. Your bias shows, although I admit it pales in comparison to Schultz and Olbermann. I think it's time to switch back to Shepard Smith and Fox, the only place we can learn about the likes of Van Jones.

How soo many people are duped by these political con men, both Republican, and Democrats I'll never understand.?Are most Americans aware that many politicians are only actors with the gift of gab and BS.?It seems as if John Boehner belongs in this group. This comment is made after viewing your show today regarding John Boehner not Knowing the difference between the Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence. Thank you! BRB

Rick -
I always admire the way you facilitate communication to share opinions and attitudes. It encourages the sense of trust I have in CNN through all it's employees. There is, as you know, a serious lack of trust in all e-media so it is a wonderful thing when you and the rest of CNN go out of your way to ensure understanding.

I know it is because you are all so professional but it is great anyway.

thank you very much

hey fluffy, Hasan put his vote in on the wars. Can you believe the congressman saying 'The soldiers are fighting for peace." We have been at perpetual war for 65 years. I haven't seen the U.S.at peace. Do Americans understand the meaning of the word peace.

C.L.   November 6th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

hey fluffy, I heard a comment about the harrasment of Maj. Hassanon cnn. The man said "it was hard to believe the soldiers harrased him." There is similarities in all mass killings. The killers complain of harrasment and the officials deny. Injustice is the cause of these events and they will continue until the injustice is stopped. In America there gauge of justice is so distorted this will continue and fester.

Jobless rate at 10.2 percent, and it's likely to stay high for months to come

75 Percent of Young Americans Are unfit also uneducated for Military Duty. Is private industry haven the same problems AS THE MILITARY on finding qualify educated people to do the job causing the unemployment to hit 10.2% or could it be that BANKS ARE NOT LENDING TO SMALL OR LARGE BUSINESS? THERE IS ANOTHER FACTOR NOT MENTION HAS TECHNOLOGY FALLING BEHIND NOT CREATING ENOUGH JOB TO SUPPORT THE AMERICAN ECONOMY.

Graeme from Ottawa, Ontario   November 6th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

The solution to the uneployment rate lies with President Obama, the blame lies with President Bush and the faith based economics of the Republician party. If you want to vent, vent in the direction of Texas not Washington. Bush lied about the economy and CNN ignored those lies, Obamas telling you the brutal truth.

I would like to make a comment about the press conference at Ft Hood today . I am angry at the Sect of Army talks about programs in affect for our men and women. RIGHT!!! Come on!!! Then he goes on to talk about they had no idea or was going to really find out what happened. Its clear someone was looking at him about 6 months ago and DID nothing about this Major.
Because...he said it right..they take care of their own. He was an officer who the military spent so much money on. Its hard to think one of their own could do such as an act. There were signs and nothing was done. AN Outrage!!!!!!!

I have experienced first hand about dealing with an officer in a stuation that can ruin the name of the Army. They tend to push it under the rug or hush hush type of manner. The officers hold a higher standard when it comes to punshiment and other things. They treat officers different from enlisted. Now one of their own has committed this act.

"the military (Army) has been known to ONLY react to situations AFTER an situation. I.E. What happened in Iraq when someone walked into a DFAC and blow it up. There was no security and as soon as it happened, they decided to place armed guards outside each DFAC building throughtout Iraq. I was there for 3 1/2 yrs as a civilian ...Go figure.
Why wait until something bad happens to get the Army to react? I am pissed off about what happened to our men and women only because the military (army)knew something and did NOTHING....
Now 13 human beings as dead..

My ex husband was stationed there for several years and we lived on post. I know where the readiness center is. I was there just weeks ago to renew my sons ID card and just to think that he was with me and we were only there to get an id card. I have many friends that are still stationed there and I am mad at the Army for not really looking into this man.

SANTOS FERNANDEZ   November 6th, 2009 4:45 pm ET

Hey remember that time Rick Sanchez was driving drunk, hit a guy, and then left the scene for two hours?

Minutes after midnight on the morning of December 10, 1990, an intoxicated Smuzinick darted out in front of a Volvo on a residential street near Joe Robbie Stadium. The driver of the car, WSVN-TV Channel 7 anchorman Rick Sanchez, became the subject of a subsequent January 16 New Times story that described the odd circumstances of the accident. Sanchez, whom a Metro-Dade police officer said “smelled strongly of alcohol,” first stopped his car but then later left the scene. A blood test to determine Sanchez’s sobriety was not administered until an hour and fifteen minutes after the collision. Though Sanchez says he tried to aid Smuzinick at the scene of the accident and flag down motorists, eyewitnesses claim the anchorman ignored the injured man and loudly told police and bystanders that blood tests were pointless, and would hurt his public image.

Why did Sanchez leave the scene? To try to get the alcohol out of his system calm his nerves:

His attorney, Richard Essen, now says the anchorman returned home and had “a couple of drinks to calm his nerves” before returning to the scene. Essen doubts that Sanchez’s DUI charge will ever come to trial. “I think the results of the blood tests will be thrown out,” the lawyer says. “If the results of the blood tests are suppressed, then there is no evidence against him at all. The state cannot proceed.”

Sanchez offered ZERO financial aid, and did not even bother visiting the man he left paralyzed…

Though Smuzinick’s health insurance policy covers most of his medical costs, it doesn’t pay for rehabilitative care. Family members say unpaid bills for physical therapy now total about $81,000. To save money, they have removed Smuzinick from the clinic’s head-injury program. Using videotapes to learn therapy techniques, friends, relatives, and former co-workers have begun to provide a semblance of the rehabilitation program they can’t afford.

One friend of the family, Kelli Crist, has distributed flyers describing the accident involving Smuzinick and Sanchez. The flyers list Crist’s phone number (680-2741) and request donations to help pay for treatment and therapy. So far the fund-raising effort has not gone well.

“Nobody seems to be interested,” Crist says.

Smuzinick’s fiancee, Jackie Stringhill, says it’s just as well that Sanchez hasn’t paid a visit to Smuzinick since the accident. “I guess his attitude bothers a lot of people. But we have enough to think about. We have our hands full. We don’t really talk about the accident much any more. Anyway,” she adds resignedly, “as far as Sanchez goes, what goes around comes around.

Rick, if you are an Italian business visitor here in Dallas you don’t have to worry about a job. Here we use our taxes and stimulus monies to ensure that they have a job. I guess the American worker doesn't know how to weld Imported Italian steel. I wander how many millions of other highly skilled foreign workers that American corporations have to bring in because we don’t have the ability to do so many jobs. I guess the news finds this to unimportant to report on or investigate.

Lorraine   November 6th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

What a disgrace! This country is in mourning for the soldiers killed at Fort Hood and New York City throws a big party for the Yankees. They should have taken the money spent on that parade and given to the families who lost their husbands, wifes and fathers. How much will the US government give these families? Not millions like the families who lost family at the World Trade Center they'll be lucky if they get 10 or 15 thousand, try sending your kid to college with that.

Overlord   November 6th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

Tired of debate about healthcare and how complex an issue certain people will have you believe it is. This is a critical issue for all American citizens, and as such a solution for American citizens should be considered for immediate implementation, save the immigration issues for another debate. Though noble in principal, it distracts from all possible speed in solving our American healthcare crisis.

Robbie Lawler   November 6th, 2009 11:39 pm ET

C'mon Rick this story is somewhat interestin, but why not report on stories that actually affect us, like Ron Paul's bill to audit the Federal Reserve? Wheres the media coverage for this crucial bill that will essentially make the Federal Reserve accountable to Congress.

Hi Rick.....
Just wanted to point out something I believe no one has mentioned about President Obama and his "healthcare reform".... Isn't it strange that Bush had an agenda in Iraq....payback for daddy! Now President Obama's agenda is to kill the insurance companies.....payback for mommy! When will our elected politicians stop focusing on THEIR agenda's and start focusing on those that elect them. Sorry, I am not buying that this reform is good for american's whether we know it or not. Andrea

michael c morgan   November 8th, 2009 9:59 am ET

rick, this is a tragic event. god bless the victims, their families and my prayers to all. someone's butt needs to go in the trash can over this. as more info emerges, it's obvious that the suspect displayed very definite signs that should have been responded to by his superiors. how did a mental health professional, surrounded by other mental health professionals, act out like this and no superior officer take action? i suspect that some were reluctant to report their concerns due to religious implications and superior officers can and do retaliate against those bearers of bad news. superior officers and the army as an institution dropped the ball(again) and lives were lost. someone butt(s) needs to go in the trash can. after that, the army needs to learn some lessons and improve their response protocols and take this sort of thing seriously, but first someone's butt needs to go in the trash can (be accountable) and the butt needs to be officer butt. no way to blame this on the enlisted (ala abu ghraib{sic) and the butt needs to be at least a lt. col. already this is being portrayed as an isolated incident (small inquiry) but it isn't. this reflects a huge hole in the army's ability to help and protect it's own. don't get me wrong–the army is made up of brave, dedicated people who mostly serve and sacrifice silently, but there are officers who think they are leaders who have a larger calling and don't have to be soldiers first, who don't think that the priviledge of leading soldiers requires you to set the example of being a soldier. we'll see rick–watch this turn into something that slipped through the cracks. love and respect to all the silent(officer and enlisted) as for the rest–someone has to be in charge–yes i am a retired viet nam vet

Makus   November 9th, 2009 1:37 am ET

Affordable Health Care for America Act ?

As a very disappointed Democrat I say that the word "affordable" in the title is not applicable. If you select the same failed, overpriced insurance system and expand it to include 36 million low income new members plus all of the high risk patients, you don't end up with an affordable system. To get that you need to cut the costs in half with a single payer system that has proven successful in all of the other industrialized countries.

steve R   November 9th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

Hey Rick. I'll bet that if you follow the money paid by the federal governmet to the individual congressional districts in the form of pork, you'll find that the Obama administration paid more for the yes votes than business paid for the no votes. Lots more.

Thanks,
Steve

Regarding the large sums given to our legislators, we already knew how shamless they are, however the Health insurers are no better, they have been jacking up our premiums so that they would have the money to pour in the house and Senate. What dispicable chain of events.

Rob   November 9th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

The only mandate that Obama had was to kick Goerge Bush on the way out of the White House! Obama was merely elected on the backs of working tax paying Independents period! Obama is now losing that critical voter block as he continues to take from the tax payer and give to those who he feels deserves it(re-distribution)! I was taught you acquire what you work for including health insurance. Get over it, its a bump in the road, cross your fingers that nothing happens, I`ve done it and so has many others, its a fairly new concept, live within your means and stop asking the tax payer to maintain your lifestyle!

Rick Sanchez, how dare you use or say anything about the constitution before you even know what a case is about! I would bet my house that you haven't even read the constitution. It's just like you liberal idiots to speak before you know the facts. It's people like you that are the reason CNN is #4 in the ratings. Keep up the lies, it looks like it's doing you a lot of good.

Sandra   November 9th, 2009 4:43 pm ET

Whoops – hit submit before I finished. My point is this country has been invaded by 12-20 million Mexicans and Central Americans. Our biased, news reporters, elected officials and business folks are taking advantage of these people – it's called slave labor. Our military is becoming a military of hispanics -we use them to fight our wars, cook, clean and bring us drugs. Until we enforce our immigration laws – whether we're INVADED by Mexicans or Canadians we are nothing more then a country of amoral citizens that will do anything for a buck.

Bob Schmidt   November 9th, 2009 4:46 pm ET

I agree with the late Walter Cronkite–a news anchor should report the news without interjecting personal views/opinions into a given news story. Rick, and the rest of you liberal, biased CNN "Heroes" really do get on tangents. Also, why do you spend so much time during your news hour today talking about the baliff who swiped a document from a lawyers briefcase-must just be another slow news day or something–Rick, let the dead horse lay-such "newsy" stories really hold no fascination or significant impact on peoples lives-theft is still theft-so what's so earth shaking about this news story? Spare me the highbrow rationalization of constitutional rights, blah blah, blah!

Betty   November 9th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

It is a shame that they keep on telling us to follow the law when it comes to immigration laws, but they keep on frustrating those who are actually doing so. I am an American Citizen who wants to be with my daughter, but the American Embassy keeps on frustrating my efforts. I applied for my daughters paperwork In December last year after she was denied a visa to visit me. I have provided the national Visa Center with all the paper work they requested but until now they keep on telling me to wait for a decision. Its now a month since my daughter went for an interview & yet no one seems to be in a harry to tell me one way or the other whether she got the visa. Rick, Please have someone reveal the hipocrits that they are (the Senators/House Representatives who vote No for Healthcare reform) by letting the public know about the story you done just a little while ago from insidesecrets.org. I bet you if the public knew how much money they accepted from the Healthcare lobbyists, they would not want to go back to their constituents and let them know how much they lined their pockets with and would open the publics eyes to why they voted NO on Healthcare Reform. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO THIS FOR ALL OF US. MOST CNN VIEWERS WERE AT WORK WHEN YOU ANNOUNCED THIS EARLIER TODAY.

Rick: I would love it if you would continue to put on the screen what the senators and representatives earned to vote their yeah's and nay's on the health reform bill. This was infuriating information – and you need to continue to get this story out there on the airwaves. Unfortunately, all our representatives are "on the take" – bought and sold by special interest and lobbyists; no one is really for the people anymore.

They complain about reading 1900 pages and tossed them out on the steps of Congress! Pull an all-nighter and do your job for once in life – or is that too much to ask! I guess it is if their vote has been bought – why bother to read it!

Scott Ritter is correct in his views of Iraq. For me, a 78 year old citizen, I see warfare as the last option for seeking peace. America has had war since 1941 with no peaceful solution within sight. Too bad we don't live long enough to gain permanent peace in the world. I had hoped that we would lead the world to peace using the U.N. as the tool for a peaceful solution to differences between nations. So here we are, the worlds largest supplier of arms and a capacity to deliver world ending bombs wherever we choose, maintaining warfare as usual. Sad, sad, sad!

My husband worked for GM and belonged to the UAW for 30 years. We pay for our doctor visits and it cost us 50.00 for a perscription. I don't know where you get that we have cushie health care plan. Yes we have health care but he worked hard and gave up pay raises to get the health care plan which has now been partialy taken away. We pay for blood test and x-rays. You can't put the union workers down for working hard and having health insurance. How about your health insurance. Tell me it isn't probally one of the best.

Rick, Just watching you on TV 1235 Pacific time. You said union benefits are great (paraphrased) and should be taxed. I'm a member of UFCW, Food & Commercial Workers – grocery stores. Our benefits are at best, ok. We have so many treatments, meds, immunizations, procedures that are not covered or minimally covered, it is very bad. We do NOT have great union benefits. You are just plain wrong here.

Rick, It is imperative at this time that the media provide the public with ALL the information relevant to health reform, especially those pertaining to corrupt politicians who have received blood money at the expense of the sick and dying. Let's not repeat the catastrophe of the Iraq war by the negligent news media.

Rick, I am not surprise by the action of our lawmakers taking bribes on health care. I am more suprise that the general public are not up in arms and demanding they step down from their position. America is sipping away from Americans because they allow this to happen.

Rick, I say that the citizens of America should encourage this democratic government under President Obama to lift the Cuba ban. The ban has not worked for over 40 years so it is time to go back to the times when Americans were able to travel to Cuba. The people of Cuba can only decide who and what type of government they want. No other nation should try to impose their way of thinking on them. It is wrong for America to tell the Cubans to go up against their leaders. Did Obama tell the Iranians to go up against their leaders? Fidel and Raul Castro are old men now. Let them enjoy a little bit of American influence in their country so that the next Cuban leader will see the light and realize that without the mighty U.S. dollar, Cuba will not be able to go backward but forward. Hence the Cubans will become so dependent on American tourism, that they will not hesitate to go up against a regime that want to oppress them. It is time for change and the Cubans are looking for HOPE from President Obama.
