Imagine having a front row seat to history, and being able to grill and give grief to America's historymakers.

That is Helen Thomas, she's been giving it to these guys since 1961, John F. Kennedy's first year in office. AND she was the only woman! She taught the menfolk a thing or two, and she's still doing it.

Helen thomas has some advice for the leader of the free world. She's put it all together in "Listen up, Mr. President!" a book she's written along with veteran political writer Craig Crawford.

Rick talks to them both in this clip that aired exclusively on CNN.com/live.

To say that jimmy carter is a great past president makes a lot of what these 2 said suspect. He has put down and insulted the US as much as his buddy obama. Besides being anti-semitic and aiding terrorists. They should both be arrested and charged with treason.

cl   October 24th, 2009 10:59 am ET

hey fluffy, I love Helen Thomas. She seeks the truth and asks the tuff questions. Did you see the study in british columbia. We in the US have another catastrophe on the way. They found people that take seasonal flu snots are twice as likely to get swine flu as people who didn't. vaccines are destroying are own immunity. I foresee a huge catastrophe don't you.

c.l.   October 24th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

hey fluffy, Mexican flu is going to be Obama's Katrina. Where is the birth certificate? Maranatha

Insulting past US policies is completely different than insulting the US itself.

President Obama is trying to distance himself from previous administration's policies that have led to so much of the world despising the US.

As for terrorists, if you look into history a bit, you will find that it was previous Republican administrations that were at least partially responsible for the formation of both the Taliban AND Al Qaeda.

They're called books. You should open one and try to read it sometime.

George Washington   October 24th, 2009 10:59 pm ET

You need to report the truth,
or U will need a bailout to.

We the people want truth,
we know when U report lie's.

Regards the heroin problem being blamed on the Afghan farmers. I'm a recovering heroin addict, Rick. I stopped my addiction after 20 years in 1985. Have never done it again. I'm 63 now, clean, and sober for all those years. Guy told me at a 12-step meeting years ago: If they set off a neutron bomb, killed everything on Earth 3 things would survive: a rat, a cockroach and a drug addict. So the fight is a loser. Demand is always there, the supply is ample, prices I understand is ample, prices are cheap, the drug is better then it was in my day. What's not to like? If they don't grow it in Afghanistan, they'll grow it somewhere else. As ong as anyone is willing to put a needle in their arm, and "geeze" that poison, someone will be there to sell it to them....I know. I used from 1966 to 1985, and NEVER had trouble getting the drug, even in the five prisons I ended up in. It's not changed appreciably on that front. I don't advocate legalization. I think that sends a wrong message. But I do KNOW you can never stop people from growing poppies. Bound to grow, bound to be turned into heroin, and bound to be used. It's a losing fight, Rick. We need a new strategy. Burning the fields is stupid. They'll just re-locate. Education has not worked. Will NOT work. kids are gonna try the drug every day, in every school. After a month or so, a regular customer is born, like I was.Recoery from that terrible addiction is tough. Takes alot of determination. I've never used since the day I quit, in a Mexican Prison, on Cinco de Mayo.....what a day to quit in a Mexican Prison? My Mom was Mexican. I speak the language, did easy time in Mexico. Heroin was ample, and good inside the infamous prison outside Tiajuana back in the day. Quitting is tough. Staying "quit" is tougher. That's why so many don't quit. Take it from me, it takes alot of hutzpah to stop using that crap. I go to 12-step programs daily, have for 24 years. That helps alot. But only 1% of dope fiends and alcoholics ever go to those free and available programs. 99% do NOT.....large pool of customers. Something to think about?

mike Posey   October 25th, 2009 8:46 am ET

This is to Jane, the lady who is advertising for stories of addiction and I assume recovery from.

In 1966 I drank and used heroin the first time. I was 19. For the next 20 years I wrestled with addiction, serving 18 of those years in varius prisons. Inside I used regularly. In 1985, inside an infamous Mexican Prison I quit using heroin, on Cinco de Mayo? I've not used it since. I quit drinking on January 1, 1987, and have not drank again. I'm 63 now. My wife, herself 24 years sober and clean and I live a quiet norma life. Our recoeries are the result of daily attendance of 12-step groups, myself NA and AA, her, AA. She never used drugs. She worked a 25-year career as a health care professional, retiring at 49. She worked 11 years of that drinking a GALLON of vodka a DAY. The last 14 years she was sober. She got sober at 36. I waited till I was about 40. We live very nicely now, both retired, not hard for me as I NEVER worked anyhow. Too loaded, or locked up to do so....after I got out in 1886, I did some guest lectures at SDSU for 14 years. I wrote a book on my life in prison, and my addiction, "Reflections On The Wall" published in 1994 by ICAN Press. I attend meetings regularly of both programs, as does my wife, she goes to AA.

We did the "steps" of the programs. We sponsor newcomers, and generally simply don't drink or use no matter what. It's been a tough go, particularly for me. Heroin is a tough one to get off of. But so far so good, now for nearly 25 years. All I can say as a way of giving hope is simply this. You didn't get addicted in one day so....easy does it. It takes time, it's a process. I got it right away. Most do NOT. I was tired of "kicking rocks" on prison yards all over the world. My wife's liver was failing her. Both of us are motivated and dedicated to sobrrety, and living that way....it takes determination, and a hard look at yourself to accomplish recovery. We both know we're always going to be alcoholics and/or addicts. We will NEVER be cured. We recognize addiction as a disease, spiritual, mental, and physical. We treat it by complete abstinence. The ONLY known way to completely break the cycle we've heard of....pillls, Suboxone, all the tranquilizers are just stopgap measures. We also did it for OURSELVES. We neither had kids, have been married multiple times. This marriage is now 5 and half years, and going strong. We have a common purpose, much as when we both partied every night....it's just the opposite end of that cycle. Now we stay sober with mutual support, and the programs we go to every single day. We're both able to spend the time to this. For that we are grateful.....Mike Posey and Val

Cause of Working Class Degradation

Why should members of Congress and the Whitehouse promote the general welfare as stated in our Constitution when they can obtain large financial gains and favors by promoting corporatre welfare? The United States Supreme Court could stop the contributions and favors based on replacing our current capitalistic system (ruled by money) with a true democratic system (ruled by the ruled).

cl   October 26th, 2009 10:34 am ET

hey fluffy, Did you hear about the study of the 100 Air Force cadets that contracted Mexican flu. Tamiflu had absolutely no benefit to their treatment. What a con job the news, Obama and pharma are playing on the American people. Reminds me of the con job of illegals.

cl   October 26th, 2009 10:52 am ET

hey fluffy, why don't they leave the Colorado parents alone? The illegals put their children in more peril than that when they cross the border. All you hear are boo-hoos for them and amnesty. The amazing thing is they do it for the same reason Money.

Donald in CA   October 26th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

We need more reporters like Helen Thomas. You will not see her
consumed by phoney stuff like tea parties and is the President a citizen. The rest of the world is watching all this dumb stuff.

Rob   October 26th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

Rick:

Well done. You were obviously listening to that hotel owner in Taos where it sounded like your colleagues ( Kyra and partner) were not.
It seemed like a perfectly good business reason for doing what the hotel owner did. Indian call centers do it all the time.

He made the point that his customers come from far away places and didn't necessarily understand spanish sounding names. I don't think that is an unreasonable meeting and I thought your colleagues were deaf and very patronising. It almost sounded like Fox News in action!!!!!

Bonnie   October 26th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

I just heard you support the hotel owner in New Mexico by agreeing with him about his phone operator using an English version of his name. This just makes good business sense. I am 73 years old and many times on the phone I have to ask for an English speaking supervisor. Friends say they just hang up.
My opinion of you just went up a notch!!!

Ralph   October 26th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Hey, Rick, I agree with you to an extent on whether we as Latinos should anglo-nize our names to accommodate people who are not familiar with our pronunciations. I, myself, am name Rafael Garibay but go by Ralph Garibay, with Garibay being pronounced as Ga-rah-bay. However, this is my choice, not my employers.

Denny Bloomer   October 26th, 2009 8:02 pm ET

you have got to be kidding me about the laptop use of those pilots on NW 188. If that turns out to be the true happenings of the lack of communication then they shouldn't be allowed to carry them on board. I agree that the planes and their systems have come a long way, pilots are still needed or they wouldn't be there nor their salaries. Now, the NON response of our military to the situation is the most troubling to me. REMEMBER 911???? DUHHHHHH!!!!! They should have been as a MIN escorted and at a MAX shot down!!!!

June Risner   October 26th, 2009 8:56 pm ET

Rick – thank you for telling the viewers you believe "when in another country we should speak their language".

It just seems plain rude for those visiting or living in the U.S. to go around chatting in their native tongue. We never know if the person next to us in the mall or on the street is talking about attacking us, grabbing our purse or whatever.........

I know you shocked the Latino viewers, but I appreciate how you speak the truth!!!

C BLAKE   October 28th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

Why isn't rape considered a hate crime? EVERY rape? Seems to me that a 2 1/5 hour rape outside a highschool, with on-lookers not reporting or assisting, and reportedly joining in, eminently qualifies as a hate crime! No heads will roll. Nothing will change. We'll debate endless, pointless war, until we have no more troops to send, and we will have rapes until we're all carrying guns. How very sad. This is not a happy nation.

Patricia Sellers   October 29th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

when you're talkin about the stimuls not workin and small bussi not picking up enough why don't you ever mention that a BIG part of the problem with our econ is the big buss taking their bus out of the country my job and hundreds others in our area are now in Mexico and we have empty buildings and Unemployment

Pamela   October 29th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Tacos are so apart of the American Culture he could have been refering to me and my family ( non Latino). I went on a curise to Mexico and I did not get off the ship. My friends were telling me that I could get some really nice thing and good Mexican food. I replied to them that I can get good Mexican food and real nice Mexican things in Phoenix. You do not have to go to Mexico to get real authenic Mexican food or anything else, it right here in America, is that not a Latino name as well!!!!!!!! America

Gene Wagner   October 30th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

I perceive a fundamental problem with Muslim culture when they, as members of a religion, have such a disparaging attitude toward the rights of others or their children that they imagine they have the right to kill those that don't follow their culture. The fact the Muslims,as religious fanatics, are still fighting an 800 year old conflict called the Crusades seems to indicate they are absolutely determined to use whatever means necessary to attain the end they seek.

imtiaz   October 31st, 2009 2:28 pm ET

the psycopaths that call themselves Taliban or Alqaeda do not represent Islam or even know what it stands for. They are an illiterate bunch of mercenaries willing to kill Muslims & non-Muslims and their own people alike, for their own perverted agenda. Aided & abetted by other interests in that region.
Majority of Muslims living in the US & other places abhor the violence that these barbarians perpetrate on the innocent, they feel outraged that all this is being done in the name of Islam.
Among billion plus Muslims all over the world one would find that only a fractional minority tends to turn to violence in the name of Islam.
Illiteracy & extreme poverty in most countries produce recruits at very young ages for these criminals to hunt.

Hi, Rick;

As far as the 9/11 terrorists go: I think that they should be tried in NYC. Give them the protections of our constitution. Let the jury pool come from the city. During the trial, hold them in general population at Riker's Island. Let the world know what justice in America means.

Thanks;
J.

Nelson De Souza   November 16th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Why not try these terrorist at Gitmo. No expense of moving them. The army who is holding them can try them in army tribunals and execute them. Chapter closed.
