Maricopa County's top lawman, the "Toughest Sheriff In America" (that's what he calls himself) is in a staredown with the U.S. federal government.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio was allowed to make immigration arrests on behalf of the federal government until recently, when ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) stripped him of his authority to do so. ICE says they have a problem with the way Sherrif Arpaio does business in their name.

"Sheriff Joe" says that won't slow him down, that he'll drive people he calls "illegals" to the border himself if he has to, and in fact, it's time for a showdown.

In this clip, I talk to John Morton, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security in charge of ICE. Topic: Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his apparent disregard for directions coming from Washington.

After your participation in the campaign to destroy Rush Limbaugh, gratuitously repeating slanders with not the slightest attempt at verification, why would you expect him to go on your newscast?

There's no rationale to getting down in the slime with the pigs.

gailyn   October 17th, 2009 12:40 am ET

You must be an expert at the game Twister because you managed to twist Arpaio's words today so badly and most likely just to sensationalize the issue. I watch CNN regularly but will flip to another channel when I see you name come up.

LuEllen   October 17th, 2009 1:18 am ET

Please tell ICE to LEAVE THE SHERIFF ALONE!!!!! That man is single-handedly doing this country more good than ICE is. His years in law enforcement have probably given him a sixth sense, as it were, and he offered the disclaimer that the illegals he apprehended were encountered in the line of (other) duty.
I applaud his boldness in saying he will continue doing what he is doing over their objection, and I hope Arizona supports him. It will be a sad day if they don't.

dontdrinkanddrive   October 17th, 2009 1:49 am ET

It's nice to see (one of the reasons) I left CNN walking around with his foot in his mouth. You so called new's people did this same B.S during the entire election you bring on people who straight out lie then you repeat the lie over and over. No checking needed no verification desired what is wrong with you people? And NO I am not a right wing nut job or even a conserative but I have had it with you lying sleazy newscaster's who think you can just say anything and get away with it I hope you get your azz's sued off. You are a DIRT BAG with your smug I'm better than you sarcastic tone along with all the other tool's on CNN. And yes Rush is a moron but that doesnt mean you should be able to tell lie's and get away with it.

Miguel   October 17th, 2009 1:55 am ET

We see Rick as he licks the boots of this wimpy pc prep school ICE lifer government employee here, after he gives Joe Arpaio a hard time precisely because Joe does what the people of Maricopa County, AZ always elect him to do. This "resolute" weakling pc-er ICE guy doesn't live in AZ, but he does pontificate from behind his gated community what Sheriff Joe should do. Sanchez loves to try to humiliate Sheriff Joe from his fake perch of this fake "news" channel as a 'News' person.

Joe's done more good in his life that Sanchez could ever dream of, mainly because Rick's obviously too self-important, personally sleazy and lazy to work that hard. Sanchez doesn't even want us to find out what I've researched about the good Joe's done. CNN's cowards practice sub-textual hate-mongering.

I've seen Joe's interaction with his tent city inmates. He's far more caring, committed and humane toward the inmates than the pc cleanly bureaucratic, 'proper' California system is. Sanchez is just another liberal weenie who hates his dad so much that he has to carry his hate out into his "news" just like all the other CNN statists do, who also hate their daddies.

I speak as a one-time big CNN supporter, who seen some of the damage to our society CNN's pious contempt for the constructive forces in America, does from my position as a teacher in hard-scrabble areas of Sacramento, CA. Joe's pi_s has a higher IQ than CNN has in toto.

Ron J   October 17th, 2009 3:31 am ET

Rick. this is a terrible situation with this rogue sheriff allowed to harass people based on his prejudiced assumptions.
All of his detainees are Hispanic people and it’s unfair and un-American to interfere with free movement of peaceful people who look or speak a certain way, or can’t produce their ‘papers’..Maybe this guy should leave his job as sheriff and and work at customs checking documents if that’s what he really cares about.

But really all the raids targeting poor people at food processing plants, etc., should stop also- unless Everybody here in America is subject to a raid –including luxury hi-rise office buildings, sprawling hi-tech business parks, etc., in all 50 states, so that everybody has to prove their legal status, no matter WHO.

Because we know there are many many long term residents from ALL nations who get in and stay here evading immigration, but only those perceived as ‘Mexicans’ are being targeted now because of some sort of racism., or border war mentality...

ALBERT LUONGO   October 17th, 2009 5:08 am ET

Rick, when you interviewed the fellow from ICE, I Believe his name was Mr. Morton. He stated he will only look at the illegal cases if they were detained properly. Well I think you should have mentioned if they truly were here illegally, they broke our laws by not having the proper documents and should be sent back to their own country. What kind of enforcement is that? I guess by his own admission it is OK that they broke the law, but we will let you go.The laws of our country are not being enforced and I believe if someone is here illegally they should not have the same rights as U.S. citizens. Now these people can commit a crime and everyone will wonder how come our laws are not being enforced, it stinks. Joe Arpaio did state if they were with someone who committed a crime, they would be questioned and if they are illegals they would be arrested. In addition at that time various criterias would be used while questioning them to firm up the inquiry.I don't believe you gave the full story to Morton. You did not state the finer points of the interview you had with the Sheriff. Thanks AL LUONGO

Marilyn Speights   October 17th, 2009 5:43 am ET

Rush Limbaugh has more common sense and decency in his formerly nicotane-stained fingers than any of the so-called news media pundants like yourself. It sickens me to see people like you, who are clearly lap-dancing for Barack Obama, creating these disgusting racist images of this truly patriot man. Rush's position on minorities, if you'd care to listen to him, is that they all have wonderful potential and creativity to succeed if they weren't continuously made to feel like victims by the Democratic Party. They are constantly belittled by the liberal elitists, who don't think they are capable of earning their own way. This demeaning attitude toward them constantly percolates and makes them believe they must have government's intervention to do the slightest thing. Look to your own screwed-up values before trying to ruin someone else's reputation.

Rob Overton   October 17th, 2009 6:26 am ET

You Are determined to allow illegals access to this country. I think The Sheriff is doing the right thing. You are opposed to the manner in which the illegals are identified, Profiling. Had the people enjoyed the right to Profile, the people who died on Sept. 11 might still be alive.

Bob W.   October 17th, 2009 8:33 am ET

Nice job hacking what Sheriff Joe said. He stated repeatedly that there were several variables in determining whether his dept. check the legal status of people they encounter including clothing, manner of speech and their own admission. You attempted to infer that he was arresting people based on clothing and speech patterns. As for DHS...well they have done such a wonderful job to date with immigration haven't they. This loser sounds like a whiney little breaucrat, well if he won't do it our way (ineefectively) then we are not going to play with him anymore. Shame on DHS for attacking a man that wants the job done right, and shame on you for trying to smear a fine example of effective and popular (over 80% of Americans want this issue handled without amnesty). No wonder you have a "list" of people that won't come on your show.l

HEY, WHERE DID YOU HIDE YOUR APPOLOGY TO RUSH FOR YOUR RIDICULOUS AND MALICIOUS ACCUSATIONS. YOU AND OTHERS AT CNN AND MSNBC HAVE REAL PROBLEM IN BALANCING YOUR REPORTNG. GET IT RIGHT OR GET OFF THE AIR

H Rene   October 17th, 2009 8:52 am ET

Sheriff Joe, just keep on doing what you are doing. Rick Sanchez, you are an idiot.

Doughsellz   October 17th, 2009 9:41 am ET

It was clear to me that Rick's questions were trying to illicit a more aggressive response from the Homeland Security representative. When the rep didn't Rick pushed him- "Joe Arpaio may be watching or soon will be watching this interview..." essentially what have you got to say about him deliberately defying your order. Then at the end Rick summarizes with "... divisive, your word..."

C'mon Rick. The man stated his position & you weren't satisfied with his by-the-book attitude. You wanted more direct, confrontative responses so your questions became more direct & provocative.

You should be less aggressive & more objective. Just my 2.5 cents. Thanks for your diligence on these issues. That is what myself & others like me appreciate about you.

ALBERT LUONGO   October 17th, 2009 10:42 am ET

Ron J. THE ONLY THING TERRIBLE ABOUT THE ILLEGALS IS OUR GOVERNMENT HAS LET THIS GO ON FOR SO LONG. U.S. CITIZENS NEED WORK AND WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO DON'T BELONG HERE WORKING.

tim   October 17th, 2009 10:45 am ET

What part of ILLEGAL ALIENS is it that people don't understand. ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL. There are federal laws about this but same old crap, big business wants cheap labor, The tax paying American will foot the bill. And lets not forget about the free healthcare we the tax payers provide. And no matter What the chosen one says about it not covering ILLEGALS he knows better. In 1996 congress passed a law stating that no one entering an emergency room could be refused treatment based on race,sex,gender,citizenship,religion,etc.,etc.

cl   October 17th, 2009 10:52 am ET

hey rick, did you see the couple in louisiana. Why is Cnn making a big deal of this? I am disgusted by this anti constitutional action. But you love ignoring the constitution when it comes to illegal immigrants. People who aide illegals are just like the justice of peace in lousiana.

cl   October 17th, 2009 11:01 am ET

hey fluff, its amazing how Obama goes around the world preaching rule of law. Then he picks and chooses when to enforce it. It is really sad how the republicans and democrats spit on the constitution. Illegal is illegal. come get men nappy. maranatha

Jim M   October 17th, 2009 11:06 am ET

The biggest problem in the US today is the desire of too many to be "politically correct". We have drifted so far away from our constitution and founding principles of this country because of the liberal mindset not wanting to offend anyone. It is impossible to please ALL so why not do what we feel is right. If someone doesn't like our way of life, they don't have to participate. Lets stop the BS of adapting for others who may not like what we are about. The immigration road goes both ways. If you don't like our pricinples, morals, etc...., then get the hell out!!
As far as Sheriff Joe goes, I wish we had more people like him who will stand for our values and punish those that violate the law. His tent cities are much better than giving criminals what equates to a vacation from working and contributing to society. The federal government wants to pussyfoot around when we need to be tough. If I were stopped here in the US and had to provide documentation that I was a legal citizen, I certainly wouldn't go crying to the POS ACLU to have them sue somebody....anybody..... for me.
Count this post as positive support for Sheriff Joe and for all those who may be offended, get over it.

Bruce   October 17th, 2009 11:16 am ET

Keep up the good work Joe! If these "know nothings" lived in AZ and had a clue of what is happening to our country and did their job for the "American Citizen" we would be the proud United States of America once again!

Curley Lowery   October 17th, 2009 11:29 am ET

Rick Sanchez, you are an idiot. I hope Rush sues you off the face of the earth, destroys you and CNN. You're all bigots.

jim vicalvi   October 17th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

While there is always some form of bias in the different media formats rick sanchez brings his bias to new lows. Why he is still employed by CNN is beyond me. I've said before that he is just their token latino and someone should check his green card to find out if he even has one. I'm just waiting to hear all the drivel coming out of his mouth when CNN has that new series on latinos. This turkey's ego driven rants and bias are driving away more CNN viewers than the rest of the reporters combined.

Andy   October 17th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez you have lost all credability with me. Your bias is so plain to see that it is embarassing to watch. You have a man that is trying to enforce a law that our lawmakers dont have the backbone to enforce. It is a disgrace what CNN is turning in to by allowing political correctness and lies to take over what once was called reporting the news.

Ann Nelson   October 17th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez really needs to listen to his own interview again. He misconstrued the statements made by the sheriff. The sheriff was stating that when someone is accompanying a criminal who is arrested, they are questioned and, if they state they are illegal aliens, they then take appropriate action. He did not state that they randomly pick up people simply because of the way they are dressed.

Maybe Mr. Sanchez needs to consider apologizing for misconstruing the facts in this instance too.

Mike   October 17th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Rick, you are an idiot. This is the first time I've ever seen a news feature with you in it, but I will never watch another. You are so obviously intent on destroying this sheriff, and making a name for yourself as the great saviour , that your story is prejudiced. The sheriff said that these are signs they look for in order to question these people, and if they are illegal they get arrested. As well as they should be. If I am swerving from lane to lane at night, and cop pulls me over, is that profiling? Or is he looking for signs that I may have drinking? Stop trying to be a lawyer, and try to be a news journalist, one that is unbias, and reports the facts.

Bob   October 17th, 2009 3:58 pm ET

The main reason they are taking away his authority is because "he doesn't cooperate very well with the communities in his county". Isn't Phoenix a "sanctuary city" ???
How can he enforce the law and make Phoenix happy????
Why didn't you ask the ICE man why ICE allows Phoenix to protect illegals ???
Of coarse we know.....ask Rush !!!

David Beers   October 17th, 2009 5:40 pm ET

If people are offended by the illegal alien halloween costume, are the re-constituted KKK hoods at dbeersstudios.com also offensive? I think not, but boy try to convince some!

Marlene   October 17th, 2009 7:44 pm ET

I don't care how he finds out they are illegal - they ARE illegal and should be sent back.

Muis   October 17th, 2009 8:19 pm ET

I never watch Rick Sanchez and I can now see why. He completely twists Sheriff Joe's words and tries to trap him into admitting something he never said! Entrapment. Sheriff J. never said it was because of clothing. One has to use your eyes, however. He said that he checks with ICE etc. He is very procedural. Just because Sanchez has never been ripped off or violated by illegals....He should try living in Maricopa county. I resent these high and mighty types coming down in judgement!! The sheriff risks his life regularly to keep us safe in a very dangerous situation. Ask the people of the county instead of your rush to judgement!!!! In my opinion, this Sanchez is really a smear tactic fellow!

Muis   October 17th, 2009 8:22 pm ET

Yes, I can see why your list of upstanding people will not come on your show. You are a sensationalist, mr. Sanchez, looking for the next big faux pas on the right. This conduct is reminiscent of Heraldo!

John   October 18th, 2009 12:38 am ET

Liberal Trash Like CNN {Communist News Network} Need to be put in there place.

If Mexicans can not come here legally, They are criminals.
Yes Liberals are too stupid to comprehend that.

Why Is FOX NEWS #1 .......Yep, Again Liberals are to STUPID to figure it out. That is not all bad, FOX will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Patriot(look it up in Websters)   October 18th, 2009 5:19 am ET

My Mom lives near Maricopa County...We support the Sheriff completely.Call them what you want, illegals are lawbreakers.Send them back,we don't want them here.
And Rick, when are you gonna get tired of the taste of Obamas soles, you boot licking, liberal lap dog?

C Rice   October 18th, 2009 8:59 am ET

Rick,
You don't seem to understand...these people have broken a law, whether you agree with the law or not. They are in this country illegally...that makes them criminals, albeit, perhaps minor criminals. There are legal ways for foreigners to come into this country. The law enforcement officers (LEOs) of this country are sworn to uphold all laws, not just those laws that Rick Sanchez or any other news reporter wants upheld. If the statues provide guidance on what constitutes "probable cause" or visual indicators that LEOs use to stop and detain suspects of interest, why can't they use them? If these men or women are legal, they have paperwork that proves that. If they don't have the paperwork, they aren't legal, therefore they are criminals and are subject to arrest.

Why is that so hard for you to understand? Could it be that you are so biased as to not be a reporter but rather an advocate for these illegal aliens?

The truth about major corporations   October 18th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

I need help. They blocked my twitter to stop me from telling the truth about men's wearhouse, george zimmerman and the evil empire forced the media to do to me.

youtube.com/thebiggestsecret1

Start with the habit and watch all of it. I could talk about this for 60 hours, but I had to put alot of information in a small time frame.

I'm scared for my life. I need to blow the whistle on the evil people that did this to me.

José M. Guerra   October 18th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

Dear Rick, No doubt that all your reports and commentaries are controversial and interesting, In a country that at one point seemed to be the golden gate for opportunity and fortune things have changed and continue to do so on a daily basis. One thing though, that is refreshing and up-lifting is the fact that so many hispanics are breaking into tv newscasting in every state and almost every city of the USA. I enjoy watching your show on CNN and even though I am not a fanatic that follows every news report I try to watch you as often as I can and let me tell you that you are the reason why so many of us are proud of the fact that a voice from a Hispanic individual in a TV show as reputable as CNN is and continues to be the voice of true and honest reporting. Still, the discrimination against our race exists in every aspect of our daily lives from housing, to employment to job opportunities. Continue exposing the hardships that we endure, you are one voice, but powerful indeed, you are breaking ground on your own path as others, like César Chavez have done in the past. Continue your sucess, continue to be hones and continue to be our voice louder and stronger every day. We love you and admire you!

rick conard   October 18th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

what's wrong with this man ?.

Pjs   October 18th, 2009 4:47 pm ET

CNN I hardly ever watch you,but Icame across this on the internet. I believe Sheriff Joe is doing far more than our gov. is doing.WE NEED MORE LIKE HIM. As for Sanchez ,CNN DESERVES HIM. JUST ANOTHER IDIOT. ON THE PAYROLL.

A. Smith   October 18th, 2009 7:43 pm ET

Sheriff Joe has done everything possible to be as obnoxious and condescending as possible to any victim (prisoner) that comes his way. Like some sick reincarnated Medieval torture master, Sheriff Joe appears to be out of his time and needs to be replaced by law enforcement that is both compassionate and thoughtful.

Rather than doing his job of seeing that prisoners in his care are treated humanely, Sheriff Joe appears to put the screws to any and all in his incarceration, fudging the rules, laws, ethical treatment and morality of prisoner treatment at every turn.

A. Smith

David Stevens   October 18th, 2009 7:48 pm ET

I wish Sheriff Joe Arpaio would run far POTUS. Or give him 3000 troops with sniper rifles to be place on the border. We should forget about the fence and put land mines along the border. But The first thing I would do is put rick sanchez in jail for murder. Then send him back to cuba.

Donno   October 18th, 2009 11:20 pm ET

CNN & especially R. Sanchez are wonderful.. Any time I want to hear lies, and biases along with other kinds of P.C. crap I just have to turn them on along with MSNBC Oberman & Madow. What a wonderful trio & C.Mathews makes 4. And they wonder why they don't have an audience because it's easier to turn them off.

Tim Duley   October 19th, 2009 6:12 am ET

Way to go Joe! We need more true Americans like you who are protecting America, its citizens, and enforcing the law. Too bad we dont have many (if any) like you in Washington!

David   October 19th, 2009 6:17 am ET

Rick, I cannot believe that a so-called reputable news organization allows you to put words in the mouth of the people that you interview. Sheriff Arpaio clearly stated that the clothing and speech are things that they consider only after an individual has been questioned as part of an investigation of another criminal act. Sheriff Arpaio and his officers have the right to question people while investigating crimes. If an individual admits that they are in this country illegally then Sheriff Arpaio has the legal obligation to arrest that individual based on immigration laws. If the ICE officials don't do their part to remove illegal aliens from our country then they haven't fulfilled their legal obligations. This country needs more men like Sheriff Joe Arpaio and fewer federal bureaucrats like the John Morton.

Fred   October 19th, 2009 10:41 am ET

I do not watch or read any CNN news or commentary, which includes Rick Sanchez. I prefer to get my news from reliable sources. From inception, CNN has mangled the truth and taken sides with democrats and the far left on every conceivable subject. CNN does not do it's own investigation anymore, but scans the blogs for "news" and rushes it to print without any attempt to verify. This nation will be a lot better without CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS and ABC. The New York Times isn't worthy to be placed in the bottom of a bird cage any longer. I don't want my bird exposed to such trash. I hope I am seeing the death nell of the main stream media. It is time for some real journalists to take the reigns and perform some real journalism.

Dr. Luis R. Lizardi   October 19th, 2009 11:07 am ET

Mr. Sanchez, you have a big problem. Not only are you a biased "reporter" but when you spout lies and nonsense about a celebrity like Ruch Limbaugh and then refuse to apologize in public, then I feel a shame of being a latin (although you are really not a latin...you are a pseudo anglos). I deal in facts Mr. Sanchez. Try it...you may enjoy doing factual research. And by the way, I favor Fox news which by all accounts are miles ahead of CNN when it comes to facts!

Ron   October 19th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

You sir are trying to in-flame ICE to go after our sheriff!!! i live here in phoenix, and i voted for our sheriff to do his job!!!!!! you sir need to move to mexico you un-american media a-hole. i love my country and will fight to the end for it. illegals GET OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Headline: Rick Sanchez says "I am dumbass"!

oh sorry Rick forgot to confirm..oh wait, after reviewing the video evidence.....plently of proof, if you didn't say it you should have!

Keep the crap coming....laughter is the best medicine.

David   October 19th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

Wish we had a sheriff like that in Alabama. I used to work in construction as a brick mason. I used to make good money at it. Now with the influx of illegal aliens, everybody in the construction industry is losing their jobs because you can`t compete against people who will work for $5 to $7 an hour. Why don`t ya send some reporters out to investigate this. Just ride around Huntsville, Alabama to the construction sites and you will only see Mexicans out there. It`s not that they are doing work we won`t do, It`s they are doing work we won`t do for that amount of money. I used to make more on a brick job when I was 17 than I can now that I`m 38.

ALBERT LUONGO   October 19th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

Rick, you being Hispanic I am sure didn't cloud your judgement on illegals coming into this country ,Latino or otherwise.Yeah just like Obama is not a puppet for the Emanuel bros., Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, and Sores etc. You are a young man who has illusions about a Utopia without realizing how to get it unless you take it from people who work hard for what they have. Did your mother or father or you or any one in your family come to the USA legally? If so I don't understand your strong feelings about illegal immigration, if not I see why you think it's OK to walk across the boarder. AL LUONGO

Ryder   October 19th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

I think CNN should focus on the IMPORTANT issues and that does not include baloon hoaxes, stock market BS which is a hoax to try to make us think things are better when they are not and foreign nonsense that can wait. The healthcare issue can wait. It has been like this for years so what is a few more weeks but we must remember that this is election time for some of the rich politicians in Washington so they unemployed won't get any attention until that is over. Then even millions more will be out of work by then and more homeless will be seen. I keep getting e-mails from Jeremy of the Obama camp asking for contributions. You have to be kidding!!!! We are out of work dude or haven't you pulled your head out of the sand yet to see reality. We have NO money and all the tax and social security money that millions of people have given to this government has all been sent overseas, used to help foreigners here and for everything except helping the unemployed. ALL politicians are rich and if they say they are not they are lying thru their teeth. Fund raisers and parties continue in Washington while the unemployed are going hungery and homeless. This is a travesty. Yup...I've been online with other CNN folks but one in particular thinks it's more important to talk about HAIR....that's right....HAIR...than it is to push for Americans necessities. Commentators, etc. make big bucks so not many of us really feel there is much concern for REAL Americans from any of the news channels. I have experienced being passed over for jobs that foreigners are more welcome to and I'm well educated and at 68 have to work. I have been to interviews where an applicant can hardly speak English and they get hired. AN AMerican SHOULD NOT have to learn another language to do anything. It should be the other way around. If you can't speak and know English then you are out of luck.

Jim   October 19th, 2009 3:07 pm ET

What is it that people do not understand about the word "Illegal". All illegals need to be removed from this country NOW!

Pam Riker   October 19th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

I think Sheriff Joe is right, breaking the law is breaking the law. What the heck does illegal mean? RIGHT!

Mark Goodwin   October 19th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

Rick,
Sheriff Arpaio specifically said in his interview.."Pursuent to another crime". Meaning...when they are arrested for any crime...THEN...they are checked for being illegal aliens. They are not arrested for their speach or clothes. They are arrested for a specific crime and THEN these other factors are looked into. Why are you playing it up that they are only arrested because of their speech or clothes?

Jimbo   October 19th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

Sorry Rick, but this time you are wrong and sound heavily biased towards illegal aliens

Jim Darts   October 19th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez is doing his best to "bring down" sheriff Joe because he is getting rid of illegal aliens. Mr. Sanchez and his cohorts keep referring to the "illegals" as Immigrants. Once again, Mr. Sanchez has veered so far to lthe left that he has shown his true colors–Mexicali Forever

Couldn't you just report and not side with the illegals ??

Julia   October 19th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

Rick,

Once again, you are showing what an incompetent boob you are. Bless Sheriff Arpaio and his sense of basic right and wrong and the ability to do what is right without hesitation. We need more law enforcement people like him and less of the urban, liberal twits like yourself who are masquerading as journalists.

DC Bob   October 19th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

Rick,

Leave Sheriff Arpayo alone. He is doing the job that the traitors in the federal government won't do. Stop illegal Mexican invaders NOW! If they want to come here, they must do it legally by applying for asylum or legal status. Do not compare Arpayo to the 1960's sheriffs. That is a cop out on your part and you are just stirring up trouble.

LOONI   October 19th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

that sheriff is just a rasist!!!

Kim Mello   October 19th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

You go Joe, About time someone does their job. The others know you put them to shame. There is no reason we should have so many illegals here and if everyone did their jobs right we wouldn't.
Hey americans wake up!!! They get free health care when they walk into an ER but you need to pay. Because ER can't refuse them. Then they pop a kid out and now get gov. assistance. Know kidding they want to live here. His sweeps are just!!!!!

Sven   October 19th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

Rick, KNOCK IF OFF already. Stop defending illegals. They BROKE the law! Stole someone's identity! Any U.S. Citizen would go to jail for years!
I am deeply disappointed by you. Stop supporting it!

alice K.   October 19th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

Sheriff Arpaio is at war with the latino community, it's crystal clear. This man is RACIST, plain and simple racist. Arresting people based on their clothing, and speech? WOW!

Darrell W   October 19th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

McAllen, Texas

The sheriff works for Maricopa County, not Obama. America needs more like him.

Toney   October 19th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

Sanchez, illegals break the law! Criminals are criminals! You want to immerse yourself in the Hug a Thug environment of the Democratic Party. Do not drag the rest of the United States into your socialist groupie thought process!

VoiceofReason   October 19th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

Rick -

Do you not know the basic constitutional difference between federal and state law enforcement? If we go down the path you are trying to drive the Sheriff, we will have a federal police force, and our founders knew the risks inherent in that.

You blew it with Rush last week and now you are blowing it again. No wonder the WH considers you "news" and not Fox...

Bob Turner   October 19th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

Rick,

Finally, a law enforcement official that has some common sense. Too bad that we can't say the same for the media that wants to find reasons to harrass him. We need more people like Sheriff Joe that are willing to do the right thing for their constituencies. Why does the media have no common sense?

Joseph Racine   October 19th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

Wow, A civil servent doing his job!!!! Listen, if your an illegal in this country and you get caught, your going to jail and your getting deported. Welcome to the American Legal System. If you want to get in the legal way, then we will keep that line open as we always have.
Rick. Your a tool. I wish we could deport you.

Abe Abdelhadi   October 19th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

Rick,

Saw the Sheriff Joe piece. If you want to make an omelet, you have you to break a few eggs.

If he's enforcing the law, so be it.

Pat Black   October 19th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Rick,
What is going on? Our government gave wallstreet billions of dollars – in good faith? – to people who head companies that have no conscience, integrity, ethics or moral values, they can't see beyond their own greed. Meanwhile the people on main street are loosing their jobs, their homes, struggling to feed their families, have no medical coverage, lost retirement funds and some have no hope of retiring. Social Security is getting no increase, but the fat cats are getting millions in bonuses from our tax money. Is there something wrong with this picture? Apparently not if you sit in the finacial sector trying to convince everyone that the economy is recovering. We have laws that allow activity that is criminal and nothing is changing.
We honestly have less to fear from the terroist in the Middle East than our own terroists in the financial sector who will bring this country down. The battle field is greed and power and we will loose without a single bullet being fired.

Kim Mello   October 19th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Don't stop Joe great job!!! Sanchez sounds mexican is that why you are against him?????

Russell Shepherd   October 19th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Did anyone mention that those people with "CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS" are ILLEGAL immigrants?????

Edmondesq   October 19th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Nonsense Rick,

This has nothing to do with Bull Connor and the injustices during the Civil Rights movement. The 4th amendment protections you wrongly cited apply to US citizens...people who are born or naturalized in the USA. Sheriff Arpaio has every right to conduct routine crime sweeps and arrest persons of interest at a crime scene. If they turn out to be undocumented immigrants, they are breaking the law and should be deported. You're going to end up making another retraction based on that 100% wrong implication that undocumented immigrants have Constitutional rights because they do not.

Jeannine Comiskey   October 19th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

The sheriff said they come across illegals during a stop of someone who has broken the law that seems fair to be interested in the company that one keeps thanks Casa Grande Az. all for this enforcement style it seems to be working

Caridad   October 19th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Watching your "interview" with Sheriff Arpaio this afternoon makes me glad we still can change the channel to Fox News. Rick, you're so slanted, it's pityful.

RICHARD   October 19th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

what part of illegal dont you understand........

Ann   October 19th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

Come on Rick – IT'S ILLEGAL for unregistered mexican people to be in the US....I support Sheriff Joe Arpio 150%.......he's doing the right thing.....(and I am an Obama Supporter)

jaquez_cristal@yahoo.com   October 19th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

"They don't know what they are talking about?" Sherrif's favorite quote! Oh sure, he knows it all, he's the sherriff that has been elected many times, another of his favorite sayings...

Does he ever say that he has arrested LEGAL RESIDENTS and CITIZENS because to him they were "Illegalls" just because they had an accent, they dressed the way they dressed...because that is really all he looks at to determine if you are an illegal.

This is not just about arresting "illegal immigrants" this is about racial profiling! he said it himself he looks how they are dressed, and how they talk.......are you kidding me, you don't call that racial profiling????

bob bechtel   October 19th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

he is only doing what cops do at all DUI check pionts and SAFTY check point they use that as a catch all to arest you and fine if they stop him than they should stop all wrongfull arests like check points

Bill Jenkins   October 19th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

The sheriff is doing a great job. There is no gray area regarding people entering a country without LEGAL documentation. Period.

Laws must be enforced. Period.

mrdean n Seattle   October 19th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

Rick Sheriff Joe is doing the job the people of Arizona elected him to do , investigate broken laws, crack down on violance, if an illegal gets in the way of his investigation he should put them in jail. you should go to mesa and see for yourself. I lived there for a year saw the illegal lined up on the streets looking for work

rick sanchez   October 19th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

i feel your questioning of joe apaio was overly aggressive and uncomfortable and accomplished nothing. you are doing the hispanic movement no favors.

victoria   October 19th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

rick keep up the the good job,,,,,,,,,

Anna   October 19th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

Why isn't the sheriff cracking down on the business that hire the illegals? No jobs they won't come.

patty   October 19th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

Oooooohhhhh,,,,,Sheriff Arpaio ate Rick Sanchez's lunch! You have to admire a man who sticks to his guns and makes a "talk over you" newsman (Rick) look silly. I love you Rick! But he ate your lunch.

LOONI   October 19th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

racists!!!!racists!!!!!!racists!!!!

victor   October 19th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

it was great to see someone stand up to sheriff joe like that... i live here in phoenix, and not only does he use these tactics to get him re-elected... but to strike fear into the citizens who live here. thank you rick.

kay   October 19th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Leave the sheriff alone and let him do his job.He is helping the feds or maybe making them look stupid for not doing their job.The illegals need to go back to their home country.

Jennifer   October 19th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Why are we questioning the actions of Sheriff Joe! I live in Arizona and am proud we have someone protecting the rights of legal U.S citizens. If you are here legally why would you have an issue showing the police your green card?
If I lived in a foreign country legally and was asked to provide proof of my citizenship to the police I would gladly do it.
Arizona is a better place to live because of Sheriff Joe's passion and work in preventing crime.

Tom   October 19th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

Why don't you talk about the crime ,expense to the health care system, the drug trafficing that comes along with the immigration just to begin.

Jerry Jacksonville, Fl.   October 19th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

Rick, the sheriff is doing his job and it's to damn bad that the Federal government isn't doing the same. When the Mexicans cross the border they are breaking the laws of the United States and should be arrested and sent back to Mexico as should any other illegal whether they be from Mexico, Cuba, Haiti or where ever. I don't know about everyone else but I'm damn tired of supporting all these illegals. If the truth be know all the illegals in California are a big reason for their money problems. If they enter this country legally I'm all for them but otherwise send them back.

Lily C   October 19th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

What nationality is Sheriff Joe Arpaio??

Morgan   October 19th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

People are becoming so focused on being politically correct that their judgement becomes clouded. What part of ILLEGAL alien do people not understand? If they are here undocumented it does not matter whether or not they do anything else that is illegal. They are here in this country illegally and should be arrested.

robert szukhent   October 19th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

rick sanchez you are a left leaning idiot.. the sherriff is 100% right

Bobby G   October 19th, 2009 3:21 pm ET

Rick you sounded like an overbearing Bill O'Reilly during your segment with Sheriff Joe. Obviously that was your intent. Overall you come across as ignorant and narrow. I thought Sheriff Joe sounded far more credible in his measured responses than you did in your goofy badgering of him. Anyone could hear you weren't listening to facts. Rather, you had your own agenda.

Alan   October 19th, 2009 3:21 pm ET

Rick there you go again, YOU are wrong this is still America, people are breaking our laws and need to be held accountable. One up for the Sheriff.

David Lucchesi   October 19th, 2009 3:21 pm ET

Rick you have no idea what your talking about! As a native of Arizona I very high regards for what Sheriff Joe is doing. Unless you have lived and witnessed what the illegals have created in the Phoenix and surrounding areas go cover another story GO JOE!!!!!!!

Connie   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

We need more sheriffs like him–more power to him-illegal is illegal–with family in law enforcement, how do you think they catch criminals?
Just because you are brought into questioning, you have not lost any of your civil rights.

Hilda Vitale   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

I saw your interview today with sheriff Joe Arpaio. he is trying to clear himself. Why is he wearing a tie clip with a gun? To me that looks very racist and macho & intimitading ? Not good if your are trying to clear yourself...Yes I am an AMERERICAN CITIZEN, and not afraid to speek up... shame on him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stephen Meadow   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Rick: I can understand your feeling that Sheriff Joe Arpaio is "Type casting or picking on illegals, however from his comments, he seems to indeed be following the law as it is. Also the viewer, myself and many of our friends, all feel you especially as well as CNN, are totally biased and impossibly liberal. I think you need to look more at the other wide!

You said he gets great notoriety and a lot of votes, so I assume that he is doing a fine job and his local residents overwhelmingly approve of his performance

Dorothy Apodaca   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Hello Rick: Thank God Janet Napolitano took away Joe Arapaio arrest ability. I wish I had a camera on my computer. this sheriff is for sure a racist and not very bright. is it possible to report how many Mexican immigrants have died while in ICE care from lack of medical care? i have so much to talk about but I am in a hurry to get to a job interview. Dorothy A Denver, Colorado

Xrepub   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Joe is right we have so many crimes commited by illegals in AZ. I think it was 18% just think if those attacks, rapes and many drunk driving deaths were gone they could probably work on other things. This is a slap in the face of all of the people who came here legally there are many of these people who came that way that support Joe also. He had to do somthing because no one else will. Including Napalatono She made Amess of thsi State then bailed.

smartguy   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Rick you are so wrong. I live in Yuma, AZ and the border patrol have a check point 74 miles from the US border. They also regularly patrol the streets of LA. Please get some facts about the invasion of illegal aliens that are bringing the US to its knees. The sheriff is doing a GREAT job and I wish we had hundreds more just like him. The US government is infected with people like you who believe we should just open our borders to whom ever want to come here no matter the cost or consequences. Please ask you family members to use the proper guidelines to enter my country and not sneak in like a common criminal.

Karina   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

THANK YOU RICK!! for being passionate and FAIR about this issue and speaking on behalf of so many of us. What this "Sherrif" has been doing is dispicable. DON'T FORGET PPL THAT THIS USED TO BE MEXICO! OUR COUNTRY. I'm proud to be a first Generation American, but it's people like this that remind of how much I love being Mexican American. These ppl are here to work and take care of their families and what can I say for what they've done for this country. When is the last time you saw a Mexican asking you for $ outside a grocery? Never. We'd rather wait outside a Costco and hope that someone needs our services because we want to take care of our family the honorable way with our own hard work.

Al   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Rick

The man is trying to do the right thing
It's not for personal gain

Instead of trying to expose him as a biggot of some sort – you should get on your knees and thank him for the job he is doing
You wouldn't want it – or be nearly as effective
Not that you are that effective as a TV anchor

I wish we had Sheriff Arpaio where I live

J.R.   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Rick,

Sheriff Joe is doing his job to catch criminals. If he gets illegal aliens during the process ... good job. Channel 5 in Arizona did a survey and 85% of the people here like what he is doing. He has caught more illegals in businesses with phony SS numbers. Within minutes of cleaning these businesses of the illegals there are scores of citizens applying for those jobs. Setting up checkpoints to catch criminals is no different than setting up a checkpoint checking for DUI's...whose rights are being violated?
These people are here illegally and something needs to be done about it...Sheriff Joe is doing it!

Dan   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

I think that we are spending money to the homeland security and they are handling these illigal's with kid gloves so a s not to hurt their feelings. Joe is douing something about the illigals. I havent heard of how many illigals have been sent back to their original country from the homeland security. I thought the Homeland security dept was to protect us from this type of inflitration of our country by illigal entry! What are they doing?

Pete   October 19th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Rick, last time I looked, being an illegal alien IS a crime. It's bleeding hearts like you who are destroying this country.

Jessica Drinkwine   October 19th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Sheriff Joe Arpio has been re-elected 5 times because he is not afraid to do his job. If you were a member of the police force and you pull up looking for 1 person and 30 run are you going to let those other 29 go unchecked? If every time you went to arrest one and 30 ran wouldn't you make sure you had the person power with you take care of the others that are running? Birds of a feather flock together. Let him do the job he was elected to do!

we the people   October 19th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

you say they the illegal aliens have rights and our Constitution says this. You are missing one very large thing they are illegal they have no rights to our constitution do to the fact they are ILLEGAL they don't belong in this country send them all back and let them come to this country legally and then they can have rights.its time we the people stand up for our selfs and our country

Wendy   October 19th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Rick,

People need to support Sheriff Joe. The government cannot control illegal immigration as they have shown. People will never get jobs when illegals are pouring in to this country and given the work. I live in Virginia, but it sure looks life Mexico to me. The news media needs to get off of his back. I support him 100%. Our government are the ones doing "illegal" things. An in grand style. Research that!

Robbie Byrne   October 19th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Illegals must be removed from our country because they are felons by breaking into our borders. The sheriff should be treated like the hero that he is. Not many are keeping our laws. A country without secured borders is not a country. The USA can't be considered a country anymore because we allow open borders!

Stephen   October 19th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Sheriff Joe is a true American hero. Millions of foreign nationals are invading our country. There is no such thing as a law abiding illegal alien. Illegal immigration costs the US in excess of 350 billion annually. Tens of thousands of Americans have been victimized by criminal illegal aliens. There is a big difference between an illegal alien and an immigrant. Americans will NEVER accept another amnesty. Just because you have hispanic ancestry, why don't you start acting like an American? Go to the website http://www.dontspeakforme.com. Plenty of Americans with hispanic ancestry are demanding our borders be secured and our laws enforced. If you are advocating amnesty or pandering to illegal aliens for personal gain, then you sir are a traitor! Advocate something worthwhile like the rule of law and securing our borders.

Harvard Morehead   October 19th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Rick-

If you pull someone off the street and demand that they prove they are in the country legally, 99% wouldn't be able to do it. How many people carry their passports or birth certificates with them?

Try this with your next anti-immigration guest! Demand to see proof, right then and there, that s/he is not an illegal immigrant. They will huff and puff, and SAY they were born here, but can they prove it on short notice? Very unlikely.

Norman Dyche   October 19th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Rick, i think the completion of the border fence and congress funding it, would sure cut down on the Immigration and work of the Sheriff.. He is so overwhelmed with illegals he gets numerous vilators every time he sends his dupties out . I think some clippings from the border patrol of Illegals entering our country at nite will show an example of the numbers they are dealing with in border states.
THX
Norm

Mark   October 19th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Rick, I can't believe you are defending rights of ILLEGALS that as far as i am concerned they don't have any. They are here ILLEGALLY. I support Sherrif Joe.

john   October 19th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

What has cnn come to? You all became, anti-amercan and pro goverment. the shrriff is right to do what he is doing. Sorry to say that people come accross the border is already breaking the law, and for the feds to tell a state with its own laws what to do just becuase they are the goverment they do not run the states. the sheriff is right and cnn goverment lovers, you are wrong. tell the truth what the real law is and dont keep takig up for the goverment when the goverment and cnn is wrong to do so. we get better truth about what this goverment is doing with fox then you guys. I use to watch cnn all the time and now no way. I want real news and to have people tell me what the truth is when it comes to the news. cnn you should be asamed.....

Mr. Bruce E. Foster. Sr.   October 19th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez,
As an African American that lived through Gov, Wallace's Alabama and Bull Connor's Birmingham, Joe don't come close! I ain't seen no dog yet!
You being one-sided in your walk right in to this country welcomed and pro-illegal immigrate views, should not compare Joe to something you know nothing about!

Rick Thanstrom   October 19th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Rick, You are mistating the issue here. As I understand it Arizona has its own laws regarding illegal immigration. Joe Arpiao is enforcing Arizona State Law. The feds don't want him to enforce federal law because he is too effective and gets the job done making the feds and ICE look bad. I have worked with ICE. The line officers at ICE are great and try to do their jobs and protect America. The political bureacracy is the problem, ICE's management, i.e. the stuffed shirt you had on asailing Sheriff Joe is the problem. They are political puppets on a political agenda. Enforce the laws on the books, it doesn't matter what agency enforces the law, just that is enforced.

Michael Bingham   October 19th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

When did American Citizens earn the epthet "Natavist" Rick?

JanetP   October 19th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

You made a total fool of yourself interviewing Sheriff Joe. You called and asked him to be on your show then try to use him as a prop to get your usually biased and pro illegal immigrant message on the air. This is the last straw; I'll avoid your show with its slanted views.

Brenda   October 19th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

Leave Sheriff Arpaio alone, the sheriff is doing more then ICE will ever do. Illegal is exactly that ILLEGAL,against the law, read the definition of the word. ICE is saying it is okay to break the law , seriously what does that say about our government. Keep up the great work Mr.Arpaio, you are going what the Federal government obviously doesn't have the backbone to do, their jobs. For what ICE agents get paid, you'd think they'd earn their paychecks. Hire more law enforcement like to good sheriff, and get rid of ICE-that will help the budget.

Dennis Lio   October 19th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

Your baiting of sheriff Arpaio is an insult to the American people. it is time to start protecting our country. Your interview was disgusting. I am now going back to Fox for the rest of today's "news". Your bringing Bull Conner into the conversation is beyond belief. You don't live in Arizona, so until you do, shut up. Just disgusting.

Philly Diva   October 19th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Sheriff Arpio was elected to do a job. To put criminals in jail. Remember, "Criminals" are people that do illegal things. Sneaking into this country (THE U.S.A.), is illegal. We pray for thousands more Joe Arpio. GOOD WORK SHERIFF!

Flo   October 19th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Rick, Sheriff Joe Arpaio is doing what no one else in this country wants to do, try to rid our country of all these illegal aliens. Rick, I realize you are from Cuba and, therefore, have a soft spot in your heart for all Latinos. On the other hand, until you become a Sheriff and can do the job as well, if not better, than Sheriff Arpaio it might be best to stick to your day job. Kindly let SOMEONE in this country take back our country from all the illegal aliens.

DJ   October 19th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Rick – please ask the sheriff about the legal clothing allowed in his county. I am planning a visit to Phoenix and I want to make sure I am dressed legally.

william cole   October 19th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Uh. sir it seems that you are upset because that surname of yours sounds suspicious. This country has been invaded. Know need to defend your stance. Anyway, what do we do about the elementary school teachers that are covering up for the parents of elementary school children that state "we did not have a country so we decided to take one" ? Seems the support group has been around for years. Careful now they might round your parents up if you are only doing this for a show (quote the in the cardbourd box ballon kid). Got the flu or cold or something, but got the energy up to email you. you go t to ticky on the sheriff.

Michael Bingham   October 19th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

When did American Citizens earn the epithet "Natavist" Rick?

Linda Myrick   October 19th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Re: Sheriff Joe

I gather Rick you have never lived in or around Maricopa County.

The problem is illegal means illegal and the illegals try to get around illegal by hiding, stealing or getting illegal cards, etc.

I have hispanic friends who came to the U.S. the legal way and they
are so proud of it. They are not proud of what the illegals are trying
to do.

Mr. Joe is doing what he was elected to do regardless of what you
want to believe.

Try reporting on important things like homeless men, women,
children and our armed service victims. So many things we could
put our effort towards. Maybe this isn't big news for CNN.

mike   October 19th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

why hasn't he been impeached? must be the home town hero, can't or will not the governor step in?if neither of those will work cut off all the federal funds until they comply

DON FROM KY   October 19th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

I bet that ol sheriff can outdraw you rick ! I also bet he would like to poke you in the nose. leave him alone he knows how to do his job. would you like to take his place? I bet not.
Wolf should be ashamed even talking to the balloon kid. the kid was scared to death, trying to put worde in the kids mouth. I have watched CNN ever since it first aired, but you guys go overboard

Linda   October 19th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

What part of illegal don't you understand???I'm tired of paying taxes ,auto insurance, health insurance and everything else I do as an AMERICAN so they don't have to.I'm tired of my taxes being wasted on housing and feeding illegals.I don't care if they are from the moon!Get a clue!

JB31   October 19th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Rick,

I believe what the DHS Representative was trying to say in order to remain "politically correct" is that Sheriff Arpaio was not looking specifically for "serious" criminal aliens. An inadmissible alien is an inadmissible alien right? Whether they have committed more serious crimes in the U.S. or not is no excuse for them remaining here.

I would love for one of the news agencies to actually do their homework and show the citizens of the United States the number of serious crimes committed by inadmissible aliens here in the United States on a yearly basis. I bet that would even change your outlook Rick.

Craig A. Sommerfield   October 19th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Rick – I have watched your program for a while and feel that your efforts seem to be sincere, however "slanted" when addressing immigration problems. Some time ago you had a poll regarding this very subject and you seemed to be taken back because the poll clearly went against "illegal immigration". In the interest I suggest that you have another poll regarding the same subject. I also feel that problems should be addressed by the People – because politicians both Republicans and Democrats haven't done very much for our Country in the last 100 years. So how about it – Lets run that question about "illegal immigration" again. I frankly feel the results will come out the same. The balls in your court.

Jeanie Gildea   October 19th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Rick, what is it you don't understand about breaking the law in the United States? People here from other countries illegally are BREAKING THE LAW. Do you not realize what they are doing to this country? I live in a city were illegals live in abundance. They work at the poultry plants here. They can be hired a lot cheaper than US workers putting a lot of people out of work. Don't tell me they do jobs no one else will, that is a farce. They are a drain on our economy. Go to an emergency room and see how many illegals are there wanting free health care. Go into WalMart on any given day and see how many young gals have WIC vouchers. They have a toddler, a baby sitting in the buggy and they are pregnant. We are tired of it Rick, we want them to go back to where they came from ASAP.In our local newspaper you read everyday about how many are arrested for DUI etc. If they have a accident they get out of the vehicle. Let them come in the right way..

Thomas and Jeanie Gildea
Albertville, AL.

Terry Henrie   October 19th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Why would anyone disapprove of the sheriff upholding the laws of his state and the laws of his country? Your liberal views are to the detriment of our great country. Hey Rick, what part of "illegal immigrant" do you not understand?

Mike from Florida   October 19th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Rick, it is obvious that the people watching your time slot disagree with you completely. Just read these blogs. I finally take time to write after hearing enough out of you. I think that Sheriff Arpaio is doing what ICE has failed repeatedly to do. Every department in the Country should take Sheriff Joe's stance and put an end to this blatant disregard of the American way. My family came here from Europe and did everything in their power to "fit in". Mexicans do not. Go Joe!

Dawn   October 19th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Sheriff Arpaio is performing his job properly. Everyone who has an
interest, in coming to America, to get a job, must do it legally and professionally. Apply properly, stand in line, for your turn and time, and
enter America in a legal manner!! Anyone caught coming to America
illegally, should be forever denied a chance to work here as well as becoming a U.S. citizen. Times have changed , so has the law!

Mike Garrahan   October 19th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Rick Sanchez did it again today. He made a comment about "the guy doing a year in jail for smoking one marijuana cigarette". This is a myth that gets passed on and on by the news media and others who know nothing about the true facts. I spent 25 years as a police officer and I can tell you that no one in the United States is doing a year in jail for the sole crime of possession of one marijuana cigarette. IT IS A MYTH. In California you can posess up to one oz. of marijuana and you will not even be arrested. You are given a citation and the maximum fine is $100 which is 1/3 of the fine for parking in a handicaped parking stall.
At the mexican border in San Ysidro people are caught every day smuggling marijuana into the US. Bring in 100 lbs of marijuana and you would think they would go to prison for several years. Wrong. The current sentence for first time offenders is one day per pound. 100 lbs equals 100 days but you are out in about 30 days due to the crowded jails.
PLEASE get your facts straight and while you are at it send me the name of the person that everybody talks about that is doing the year in jail for the marijuana cigarette. It makes a good story but it is not the truth.

Hey Rick, if you don't like the laws of this country and so like to support an illegal activity that so obviously undermines the livelyhood of Soooo many of it's citizens I suggest you go to work for an espanol network for I for one am very tired of seeing your arrogant ass be so glib and flippant about it.

Deport ALL illegals immediately no matter what the cost.

Pete   October 19th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

Face it Rick, you lost this one....

Mary K.   October 19th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

Sheriff Joe is doing his job and there is a "witch hunt" out for him, by assorted groups. He is doing the job, we here in Maricopa County elected him to do. Illegals are illegals, period. While many are really in search of a better life, many have committeed crimes, brought in disease, & are costing taxpayers money! Bravo, Sheriff Joe!

Chris   October 19th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

Its about time cable news found a professional journalist. One who is willing to tell the story raw, without worrying about selling soap.

Thanks Rick

LOONI   October 19th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

it is so sad that all you racist ppl are just talking about us hispanichs..like we are all criminals....but what happens when a gringo goes to visit another country and their rights are violated//// then AMERICA starts they war against racistm...come on AMERICANS take a look around you and then decide who the real criminals are.....dont just judge for what you see

DugFmJamul   October 19th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

Rick ,
You are just mad at Sheriff Joe because he is doing his job extremely well, he hasn't sent any U.S. Citizen back to Mexico by mistake has he?. Only illegals are being arrested and sent back to Mexico. Rick you do not want the border secured with Mexico, if fact you wish each illegal alien would be given a voter's registration card so than can vote for Democrats in greater numbers.

Gavin Newsome makes San Francisco a Sanctuary City and refuses to enforce federal immigration laws and the FEDS do nothing, in fact Gavin is running for the Governor of California! On the other hand Sheriff Joe is enforcing Federal and State Laws equally and the FED comes down on him, why? Because the Federal Government does not really want our border secured and does not want our immigration laws to be enforced.

Rick you speak of the Constitution, the Constitution clearly states the Union is suppose to repel and stop invasions.

We are being invaded by Mexico...what say you?

William Brekke   October 19th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

Hi Rick, so being "illegal" is not illegal? I thought entering this country illegally was a crime? Does the Sherif use the same criteria that we do at the airports etc to look for drug dealers or possible terrorists?

Nano06   October 19th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

I would work for Joe Apraio any day, if only more people would do what hes doing, our illegal immigration issues would decline dramaticly. I guess ICE cant handle the fact that he is actually enforcing the law. Imagine if all law enforcement agencies nationwide would enforce immigration laws like he does. Joe Arpaio for President.

Dan   October 19th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

It amazes me that people can so easily support someone who decides he has the right and authority to round up a group of people, and then demand that they prove they are not guilty. I thought that laws required police to assume that "a person was innocent until proven guilty in a court of law"? The past teaches us what happens when a person of authority twists the laws to suit his objectives, rounds up groups of people without concern for their civil rights, and then isolates those that fit a certain "profile". If you've forgotten the results of letting this happen, ask a Jewish person to explain it to you...

Lynn Nunley   October 19th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Rick

Hurray for Sheriff Joe. At least he has the guts and primcipal to enforce the law regarding illegal aliens. Perhaps you lack objectivity regarding this subject!!

Guy Bourdeau   October 19th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

I am so tired of people in this country including Rick standing behind the rights of illegal's. If they are here illegally they have no rights and should be deported and or jailed.

The laws should be the same for all and the "Wet Foot Dry Foot" policy for the Cubans need to be elimninated and should follow the same rules as for the Hastians. One rule for all illegals.

This country needs to start following the laws in the books and stop getting soft on the issue.

Amnesty "NO WAY". As long as we go easy employers and illegals will be a problem. If this country is where they want to be they should enter through the proper channels. Learn English and history of this country.

Enough now

I want to vote for this man for sheriff, but I am from Michigan.

Al Mills Jr   October 19th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Rick
Today is the last day I will watch you SHOW because that's what it is. You show off all the time. The Sherif is doing his JOB. Your comments could cause a RIAOT down the road. As I said the sherif is doing the job that our COUNTRY is not doing The last time I heard ILLEGALS are breaking the law. Your problum is you a hispanic to RFIGHT?.

Gerard Manse   October 19th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Rick, I live 40 minutes away from the border in Southern Arizona. The border actually extends all the way to Phoenix. Spend a few days here in this area and you will change you mind. It is very dangerous here. The border patrol cannot keep up. The sheriff is doing his best. Rick you just don't understand the problems here. It is not against Latino, but against all the illegal border crossings, drug smuggeling. Did you know they are now catching Chinese illegals?

Michael   October 19th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

Rick's "spanish" heritage really shows through. His attack on the sheriff in Arizona was shameful. This is another case, true to form, of one Latino sticking up for another. To hell with "fair and balanced" news. To hell with enforcing the laws. Come live in Arizona you jerk. Put up with the cross border crime, drugs, shootings, home invasions and so on. Why don't you be fair and report on the hundreds of thousands of violent crimes commited by illegals in this country? The murders, rapes, vehicle thefts to name just a few. Why not report on our fragile desert areas that are being destroyed by the hoards of illegals that dump tons of garbage into the desert and set careless fires that cost us large sums of money to put out? What about our social sevices that have been sucked dry by the influx of illegals over the years that made it over the border just in time to drop an anchor baby? What about the lost jobs due to the illegal influx? Why do hundreds of thousands of work permits sit idle on the border as they seem to feel the need to sneak through the wire and break our laws? There is a lot to the story you don't report. Why not go across the border and see just how many cars driven by officials there were stolen in the USA? Is it our fault the Mexican government is corupt and refuses to take care of it's people. They print flyers showing the best routes to get through the border and pass them out. They have stated for the record that they will take back the land they lost to the USA and do so without firing a shot. They will do so through sheer force of numbers. Why not report on this? It's easy to confirm. It has been printed in Mexican newspapers. But continue to turn a blind eye and help your "brothers". The days of everyone in this country being an "American" (regardless of race) and a nation of laws are over I guess. We are now a nation of nations and nothing good will come of it.

aaron from texas   October 19th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

The racist sheriff is wasting Arizona's taxpayer money by rounding up illegals and legal residents when he should be enforcing the law that he was elected to do. Leave the immigration problem to the federal government. The Arizona citizens are not being fully protected from the criminals while this "racist" sheriff is out searching illegals from restaurants, construction sites and carwashes.

DON FROM KY   October 19th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

RICK;
I READ ALL THE COMMENTS YOU GOT ON THE SHERIFF ! I TAKE IT BACK ! HE SHOULD POKE YOU IN THE NOSE, I BET HE WOULD IF HE COULD SEE YOU FACE TO FACE,
AND AS FAR AS WOLF–WHO EVER HEARD OF A GROWN MAN NAMED AFTER A WILD VARMIT, BET HIS DADDY MUST HAVE HATED HIM OR SOMETHING

bobkatk   October 19th, 2009 3:39 pm ET

Hi Rick, you seem to think the Fed. Gov.has the right to enforce law in any state when in fact they do not. They do it anyway unasked and unprecedented and no one questions it.Example,..medical pot suppliers and patients arrested even when states lawfully permit it but the feds come in again unasked ,make arrests and prosecute. The duties of fed. and State are SEPERATE and always have been. The fed. gov. takes action and once the door has been opened they cannot be denied or removed.Sheriff Arpaio has every right to enforce Ariz. state law until something of a fed. matter happens.Let him perform his job without fed. nit picking.

Hulda Black   October 19th, 2009 3:39 pm ET

Comparing Sheriff Arpaio to Bull Connor was in the same category as the people who are comparing others to Hitler and the Holocaust. It's intellectually dishonest and you should rethink your biases. The sheriff is right. The federal government is pandering to the Hispanic population in order to garner their votes, but don't seem to care about the real problems the illegal aliens cause. Another piece of this dishonesty is refering to these illegals as "undocumented workers". Of course they are undocumented! They are here illegally. It is so easy to insinuate that people who object to their presence is "racist'. Hispanic people have always been a big part of this country and its vigor. Well, you have just repeated the Bull bull. Shame!

Patty Myers   October 19th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

J.R.   October 19th, 2009 3:41 pm ET

Rick,

Too bad the Federal Government doesn't do what Sheriff Joe is trying to do. As a native of Arizona (63 years), I have seen first hand the problems associated with all the illegal aliens. Government systems being drained and crime. IT IS ILLEGAL FOR THEM TO BE HERE. It isn't fair to those individuals that went through the proper channels and came to the U.S. legally. Rick, this is a major problem in Arizona and California as well as other states, ICE needs to do more in its efforts then there would be less for Sheriff Joe to do!

barbara herron   October 19th, 2009 3:41 pm ET

You had better listen to what 'Ice' said one more time. Homeland Security has a problem with the sherrif arresting illegals? Why?
Sherrif Arpaio is stopping everyone that fits a profile of an illegal alien. I for one want that man in my hometown. The sherrif is doing a job that America wants. We want illegal's out of America. It's costing us more money then we have to live on to support illegal's. America would accept an alien but come through the country legally. That is another problem but that's for another day.

K.L.   October 19th, 2009 3:41 pm ET

Plain & Simple: This guy is a JERK, He does things his way, w/ no regaurds for the higher-ups or the people he illegally arrest !!! He needs to be completely outsted from office. I thought we already got rid of that oher COWBOY from D.C., Oh well i guess heres another one !!!

Jon Bennett   October 19th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Rick,

Could you have made it a little less obvious that you’re totally bias, on this whole immigration issue, while your bashing sheriff Joe Arpaio on TV…

I guess since CNN is running, “Latino in America”, it was time for you, the Cuban immigrant and bias CNN journalist to jump on board and slam someone on TV, just to score some points.

Too bad you obviously don’t have a clue as to what you’re speaking about… That issue about Boarder Patrol only being on the Boarder… Ignorant, they’re all over the country.. and not just on the boarders.. Maybe you should try and get your facts straight before you start slamming people on TV…

And if you have forgotten, it is actually not legal for these people to cross our boarders to live and work here.. Perhaps you have forgotten that point as well..

LOONI   October 19th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Jerry Jacksonville, Fl.   October 19th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Rick your guest from San Diego looks like he just crossed the border himself, THEY ARE BREAKING THE DAMN LAW, THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES, ARE YOU SO DAMN STUPID THAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT THE LAWS OF THE LAND AND THE U.S. CONSTITUTION IS NOT THERE FOR ILLEGALS, IS WAS WRITTEN FOR THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE ROUNDING UP THE ILLEGALS ALSO.

Styvo deLargo   October 19th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

I flipped over to CNN's Rich Sanchez during a commercial break on Fox to catch Sanchez trying to somehow paint Sheriff Joe as a culprit regarding his enforcing the laws of the State of Arizona that illegal aliens seem to be indifferent to, in spite of attempts at federal interference.

Sanchez is a leftist weenie and an incompetent journalist to boot. He is nothing more than an empty face babbling whatever his anti-American bosses tell him to.

Lawmen like Sheriff Joe Arpaio are the only forces between decent American Citizens and anarchy, and leftist dogs like Sanchez and Napolitano want to take that away.

I keep hoping yellow-spine, girlie-men like Sanchez and his family is someday victimized by these illegal’s just to see him change his tune.

Blue 2   October 19th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

Why is it that if there is some inciden t where a group of people (i.e. gays, illegal immigrants, left handed people, or whatever you can think of) feel they were wronged in some way, it is compared to civil rights or what blacks went through in this country. There is no comparison of what blacks went through to gay rights, or immigration issues. I lived in Arizona for 3 years and agree that the sheriff''s method's may be unorthodox, but they work. I have hispanic friends that went through the proper channels to obtain citizenship and I applaud them for that. They did not get fake id's or steal someone's idenity. We have a serious problem with illegal immigration in this country and it has to be dealt with. That is why american workers are at home today. They have been forced out by illegal immigrants. It is not entirely their fault though. It is greedy companies that choose to hire illegals for cheap labor, so they can avoid paying fair wages to skilled workers. If you stop the illegals from coming in, the companies will not have cheap labor and americans will go back to work. Not to mention the HEALTH CARE DEAL!! How many illegals are running up the tab on healthcare. I go to the doctor the first thing they want to see is my insurance card then they want my co-pay. Illegal immigrants come in and get treatment and that's it. What are you going to do Bill Them! You don't even know who they are. There are a lot of issues that have to be dealt with in this country, but I will tell you one thing... I would not want to be anywhere else in the world!!!!
GOD BLESS THE USA!

Darrell W   October 19th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

Jimmy Wright   October 19th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

Rick, I wish there were more people serving as sheriff like Joe Arpaio in AZ. Being latino puts you too close to the issue! If a person is here illegal, he or she is just that illegal, being illegal, means that person has violated the law and should be subject to arrest whether or not they have violated any other law.

GET OFF THE SHERIFF'S BACK, leave him alone so he can do the job he was elected to do.

Jimm Wright

Billie Keirstead   October 19th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Your recent guest said that being in the US illegally was not a crime. What does he think "illegal" means?

Bird   October 19th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Today I happened to stop at the CNN channel to see if by chance there might be a change in the way they report the news. After watching your discussion with Joe Apraio, I realized why I had given up on CNN long ago. There was no discussion because in a discussion both sides have to listen. You didn't listen to what he said as you had already made up your mind. It's the same with most of the members of Congress. None of them are listening to the people except for those who want to take away our freedoms in the name of big government. I could repeat what Joe said and hope to make it simple enough to understand but if you didn't listen to him, why would you listen to me. I'm sure if you were riding in a car that was pulled over for speeding or reckless driving, the police would have the right to ask you for identification.

Su Sallee   October 19th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

To Rick Sanchez.........have been watching your coverage on our
illegal alien problem and I am most annoyed by your twisting of
the truth. We citizens who live in Arizona are tired of having to pay
for the care of people whose own countrymen do not want them.
Perhaps we would be more willing to agree with what you preach
if you personally, and others who believe as you do, would pay for
all of cost in health care of illegal alliens and for the damages
they do.

We pay extra sums of money to educate thE babies of illegan aliens born here to learnto speak English, yet, one can hear them speak in their mother tongue*, to one another, while amonsgt the citizenry...some of the words are most insulting.

When you can get the Federal Government to take care of the
problemthen maybe our Sherriff Arpeio will not have to do as much work for us. YES, WE DO RE-ELECT HIM, GRATEFULLY.

RICK SHANCHEZ., YOU DO NOT BELONG ON CNN....Su Sallee

Rick:

This pertains to the balloon hoax. I thought, as the saying goes: "One fool makes many fools" except in this case all TV, Radio Stations, Reporters and Law Enforcement officers believed that the little boy was in the balloon and had grave concern for his safety, When this thing landed they found that was not in it and thought that he had fallen out from a box which supposedly was attached to the balloon. Everyone was indeed taken for a ride by that man. He made a fool out of everyone and all the viewers world-wide who were also glued to their TV viewing this escapade and with shock as well. The father is a sick person who expected that he could pull off such a stunt and deceive everyone and get away with it. He surely needs to have his head examined and for using his child to try to pull out a stunt for the sake of publicity and promoting his personal interest. It is a crime and he will pay the price for this.
When I got in that day Wolf's Situation Room program was on and I noted that he was reporting the proceedings. I was not shocked or excited about it. There are so many things occurring specificaly in this day and age, as strange as they may seem to be I am not shocked. I always recall my mother's wise words when I was a child: "...With time and patience you will see a lot of things happen..." Indeed! To the point, we will say, "What else is new, eh?" I viewed this balloon a bit and listened to Wolf as he broadcasted this activity as I went about my business. Later on I thought, this appears to be a joke that someone played a prank so as to be popular. This is not surprising. The world is filled with a lot of weird people and weird occurrences, some idle ones. I also refer to this balloon which looked like a flying saucer as this man committing public mischief. I am pleased to hear he will be charged. He will never try this stunt again or will anyone who may have seen it and who may consider doing likewise.

I am through watching your crap on CNN. Your BS is over the top. CNN should fire you and hire someone that isn't biased and racist!

Ann M   October 19th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

You are a poor excuse for an American citizen. Why don't you move into one of the neighborhoods that has been devastated by drugs and violence. I don't mean interview someone who's living the nightmare – GO LIVE IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. Children cannot play outside, citizens are killed just walking to the store. Try sleeping at night wondering if a bullet is going to come through the wall and kill someone. If Sheriff Arpaio can get at least one drug selling, gun toting illegal off the streets, God Bless him. If the government did their job and weeded out the bad eggs, then all the law abiding, hard working illegals might be seen in a better light by American citizens. As long as the violence & drug trafficking continues, few Americans are going to welcome immigration reform.

Isabel Bucher   October 19th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Rick, I live in Maricopa County and am completely outraged not only by Sheriff Joe's actions but also the so-called "fans of Sheriff Joe." This guy is a racist buffoon, who can't get the federal vs. state laws straight, and has now insulted the federal government several times on the air. A true Patriot?? Just doing his JOB?? Are these people crazy?? What nobody talks about is the millions of dollars he's cost the county because of the lawsuits that have been filed against him and his posse, the harassment of individuals, private citizens I might add, who question or criticize him in public, the arrests of newspaper editors (EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE,for having the balls to investigate him), and the fact that the Nativists that you refer to, really think he's decreasing crime by targeting people who dress differently, speak differently, or don't look the same as all us good Caucasians. Yes, and I bet the Sheriff goes to church every Sunday to get religion so he can live by the Golden Rule. The best thing that could happen to this county is to have the County Supervisors do their jobs and get rid of this guy. He may not have dogs like Bull Conner, but don't be surprised if they suddenly appear....it would only complete the "Arpaio Portrait."

His job in to inforce State Law. If he violates the law, I am sure that he will be prescuted.

I don't belive that he is a person seeking publicity. The press is going to Sheriff Joe for comments.

Who is this buddy 'reporter' from San Diego that you are talking to now? He said 'being in this country illegally is not a crime'. What? This is from a run who allegedly grew up around cops and is 'comfortable' with cops and called Arpaio a clown.

If you have nothing to say, don't say anything. Making up verbal diarrhea and throwing it against the wall to see what sticks is not reporting but dishonest manipulation of public opinion. But your CNN is well known for that anyway.

We should treat illegal Mexican invaders the same way they treat illegals in Mexico that are caught crossing over from Guatemala and El Salvador. Then, perhaps, we wouldn't be in the financial and ethnic ruin that we are currently in, would we, culo?

That speaks volumes about folks like you with the bleeding hearts.

Thanks again for reminding me how important my donation is!

Dan Zogaib   October 19th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Rick,

In case you weren't listening as carefully as I was when you spoke to the man from ICE, Joe Arpaio is not breaking any laws, he is just enforcing the immigration laws for all illegal immigrants. The man from ICE stated that he was not being consistent with their current policies of only incarcerating those illegals that were accused of committing criminal offenses. He went on to state that they did not want him to enforce the immigration laws when it comes to non-criminal aliens! He is basically stating that ICE is allowing illegal immigrants to live here, work here, and take advantage of many taxpayer funded goods and services as long as they don't commit any crimes. Basically, the current administration is allowing the illegal immigrants to have de facto residency as long as they don't commit any crimes. I'm sure that is because they plan to grant yet another amnesty like the failed one in 1986! I also suspect the whole amnesty plan is a way to legalize the Latin-American illegals because most Latin-Americans identify with the Democratic Party!!!

Alan   October 19th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

You and your tribe Rick can not change the fact the feds. are not enforcing the laws allready on the books. The Sheriff is doing the job why would any american not like that, we are a country ol laws.
Just as Lue Dobbs goes to far one way, you are doing the same thing the other way. I can not watch Lue any more and maybe it is time to rethink this time slot.

You and Naverrett need to read the constitution before you start throwing around accusations. The federal government does NOT give a sheriff the right to enforce the laws of his state or county. That is the sole role of his state government and county. You and Naverrett are the ones looking to be in front of the camera, not Joe. Maybe if the constitution were written in Spanish we wouldn't have this issue??

WOW, Navarrette has no idea when he says illegal immigration is not a crime. And Rick you did not even question that fact.
Joe is doing what he people in Arizona want and that's help curb illegal immigration into the state. Joe does a wonderful job and I hope he steps it up.

psychman   October 19th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

Give me a break. they're called ILLEGAL aliens....not sort of illegal or partially illegal. Sherrif Joe is upholding the law. Don't make laws you dont want enforced.....especially in AZ.

Natasha   October 19th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

It may be crime to be an illegal alien, but the Sheriff to me seems to be an OLD RACIST; grumpy and bitter, his whole attitude seems racist.
Its the way he goes around choosing to arrest anyone who looks illegal...

Jay - Richmond VA   October 19th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Wow, after reading through a few dozen of the comments left here regarding illegal aliens, it seems to me that the vast majority oppose your views Rick. They agree that illegals are taking over this country and that the sherriff has the balls to stand up and do something about it. I wish more law enforcement agencies would take the same approach. If I do something illegal, I have to face the penalties. Why shouldn't illegal aliens? And Rick, your biased views have no place in this story.

Deb   October 19th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Go Joe!!! If every major law enforcement agency were to check every group of people milling around with no apparent purpose,,, we might just stop gang violence. Check their ID,, run their wants/warrants. Black, white, brown, yellow– male – female.

Hardy Brewer   October 19th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Come on Rick all you are is an Illegal simpathizer all this man is doing is what Az. hired him to do, in my state if you get pulled over by law enforcment the first thing he does whem he gets your licence is run a back ground check, these people have no constitutional rights if they are not Americans the constitution was written to govern American citizensSo get off the pot I know some of them are going to stay but some of them have to go, the American people will never simpathise with these Illegals. H. Brewer

IM4NY   October 19th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

In our post 9/11 world, one would think that we would pay special attention to those who are in our country illegally. Instead of sending our troops to fight and die in Afganistan and Iraq, we should have deployed them to protect our borders and cities against those who would plot to harm us. I rarely have objections to law enforcement when they behave reasonably and are working hard trying to protect us. I didn't find the actions of Arpaio to be incorrect. Maybe I feel this way because I am a law abiding citizen and what I value most is the security of the American people.

Ken G   October 19th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Rick – Why not go down to Mariposa County and see this for yourself! Get with the land owners down there and see what is going on! Their hands are tied in stopping the illegals from coming onto their land. Please do this story!

Crispin   October 19th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Rick, it seems a large number of contributors above agree that you are trying to create stories that don't otherwise contain enough red flags. The Sheriff is just doing his job, well, as far as I can see and is very popular because of it.

I was astonished by the misrepresentation by you of statements by the Fed speaking in today's interviews. He never said the Sheriff was doing anything unconstitutional. He carefully avoided saying the Sherriff did anything illegal at all bceause he knows full well the Sheriff is within the law. The Fed's reference to 'not coordinating' are, we know, a veiled reference to the fact that he was told to stop enforcing the law – this is not a new story.

Rick you are trying to create news and I do not view that as your role at CNN. The Fed said they did not like the Sheriff arresting people who were not guilty of other crimes. The State of Arizone disagrees. There has been a lot on CNN about this issue and we are clear on what is going on. The Feds don't want people arrested for only being in the country illegally. This is not news.

You repeatedly said he is breaking the constitution yet the Fed levelled no such charge and stated no such claim, you did and put the words, nore than twice, in to the mouth of the Fed. You even made up that he is arresting people by conducting 'unlawful searches'. The Sheriff's response was the same each time and you ignored its content: People found in the company of others arrested for crimes are legitimately identified, are they not? Is it unconstitutional for a policeman to investigate the contents of a vehicle driven by or containing criminals?

I can see you don't like the Sheriff. OK. You don't like it that illegal immigrants are arrested for that offense alone. State it clearly, but don't invent things about other people. Stop putting words in the mouths of the Feds. it is greatly undermining your credibility.

Further into the interview you repeatedly put words into the Sheriff's mouth that, following that interview, you pulled out to repeat to others. That is what I mean by you creating news. What's all that about? CNN should be a source of news coverage, not a source of news.

Balance, Rick, balance! If I want made-up news, mis-quotes, lies and jingoistic provocations I will watch Fox.

James Boyle AZ.   October 19th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

Rick, I live in Maricopa county, and I'm glad we have a "sherrif" doing his JOB; with a 70% job approval rating He must be doing something right! If the Federal Government would start doing their job, maybe we would not have the problems we have. And, what is the Federal Governments approval rating ??

G, Packard   October 19th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

nd never before have we seen our laws ignored not only by the lawbreakers but also by the very entities that are sworn to uphold the law.

markp3245   October 19th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

You ask a man to come on and do an interview and he does than you have another man come on and call him a clown and laugh at him when he is no longer on air with you.. Is that the liberal way.. How would you like it if someone said you are a liar that spreads fabricated stories to further his agenda. You would probally resort to the old faithfull liberal excuses when all the truth falls on you, which is Bush republicans are racist. Even though you are a liar who fabricated a story to further your liberal ways...

Jay - Richmond VA   October 19th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Karina, fine. DEPORT THE ILLEGAL HUMANS.

carla   October 19th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Rick I am an independant voter in AZ who wants to let you know that you and your guest just dont get why AZ folks love the Sheriff... He is the ONLY one enforceing the law in regard to immigration. If you what to do a REAL story ask the residents not the press. It is all about the schools and our budget here. I don't like Joe much, but you were unfair based on your personal views. By the way Rick, since when do assessories just walk away? When you get here by means of a coyote you are an assessorie.

motiv8ed   October 19th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Since when does the US Constitution apply to illegals. Even US citizens lose some of their "rights" when they go to prison. The only rights illegals have are "human rights" and they should receive those rights as they are arrested, jailed, and then deported.

Sheriff Joe should keep on "keeping on"..... if I could help him I would and if I could deter the likes of Sanchez using his program to further the cause of illegals, I would do that too.

Rick is the type who openly admits his "voted for Bush" mentality. I'm betting he not only voted for Bush, he did it twice

DugFmJamul   October 19th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Rick,

Ruben won't know the Constitution if Benjamin Franklin slap him in the face with it...

Article I – Section 8 – Powers of Congress
To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;
Section 9 – Limits on Congress-
The privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.

Article IV – The States
Section 4 – Republican government
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

Congress has the power to secure the border without the consent of the President, maybe someone should tell Rick and Ruben that little fact.

Hank Montgomery   October 19th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Rick
Sheriff Joe is simply doing his job...enforcing the law! I have watched you debate Sheriff Joe more than once and I believe that you can't or won't hear what he is saying.
My mother was a legal alien and the key word is legal. If someone comes to this country without the proper documents they should expect to be sent back home. If we had more "Sheriff Joe's" we would all be better off. We have a border and it should mean something!

Brad S Bartle   October 19th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Thank God for Sheriff Joe

CRIME RATE IS DOWN IN PHOENIX
BECAUSE OF SHERIFF JOE
Obama Is going to give illegals amnesty to increase his
voter base. He can not win a second term with out illegals

Jason   October 19th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Dude, this Arizona sheriff is spot on & showing what is wrong with this country. Profiling!!!!!!!! complete B.S. you look like trouble, somewhere you don't look like you belong & some ask you what you are doing. You should be glad the cops are doing something.

If profiling was used in the case during 9/11. It would have never happened. I can't stand the fact I'm sitting on a plane & looking over at some guy & thinking could this guy be a terrorist. But, no one can say anything because that's WRONG!!!!!

I hate the fact I'm driving up to Home Depot & 50 Mexicans are standing out front looking for work. But, the cops can't check them out because that's wrong.

An illegal can walk into the DMV & get a drivers licenses & its against the law to make sure he belongs in the country!!!!!!!!!

A shopping center i shop at has illegals out front looking for work all the time. Cops can't do anything. The groups trying to help the illegals show up all the time helping them. Complete BS.

Go turn the tables & be an Illegal in another country & see how many right we (Amercian's) have.

All the spoiled POOR ME POOR ME cry babies need to get off your high chairs & learn your not that SPECIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm ready to get a van, pull up to all the illegals looking for work. Tell them I have a big job for all of them. Load them up & drop them off @ the Border Patrol office.

How you like them apples. To many people work way to hard to come here legally for dirt bags to get away with breaking the law.

Tim - Colorado   October 19th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Rick, I didn't know that someone who jumps a fence or hides out in a trunk of a car to enter this country is entitled to "Constitutional Rights" . Especially since illegals can't serve in the military and fight for this country.. Sheriff Joe has the right to deport illegals he finds in the course of their duties, so get off his back! If you want to come into this country, do it the right way, be a citizen and pay taxes..

J.D.   October 19th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Rick: The Sheriff is doing the right thing. If someone broke into your house, decided to stay there and wanted you to take care of them, I think you would do something to have them removed.
These people have broke into our country and want us to take care of them through schools, free medical, food stamps, and other amenities. It's time to clean house...

Craig A. Sommerfield   October 19th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

I watched the Navarettes' interview – not a surprise. The fact is Arpaio has been re-elected every time since I have been in Arizona (1996) and he might reflect Arizonas' people, but I also believe that many, many people support the overall view concerning "illegal" immigration. The current government has brought political pressure on the Sheriff because he enforces laws that our government should enforce: the border patrol and ICE are tasked with enforcing the federal laws against illegal immigration. They simply are not up to the task. Again – let the people speak out about this specific problem. The only vehicle for that is a public vote on this specific issue in the next 2010 election. We can't trust the government to be fair and balanced in coming to some kind of justice in this issue. Let the people vote. If its done without our input, we will simple get it on the ballot, or the next one, clearly all the players feel otherwise. Big Mistake!

Richard   October 19th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

Rick: I'm a resident of Maricopa county, Arizona and have voted for one Republican since I've been here and you vilify him. Ha Ha.
All kidding aside, not only I, but a HUGE cross section of the Maricopa electorate have done the same. We love the tent jails, the green baloney and the pink underwear. We as most Americans believe we should have secure borders. All of the fences in the world won't deter the deternined immigrant. But, if there are no jobs for you when you get here. What's the point?
As the sheriff said; "What don't you understand about illiegal immigration".
Thanks richard

Blanca   October 19th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

Sheriff Joe talks about been very proud and doing the right thing because he believes that is his job and his decision. I believe that he is doing very wrong HE IS BREAKING THE LAW HIMSELF AND HUMAN RIGHTS. Rick I am very proud of your questions and the way that you aproach him, I believe that Sheriff Joe needs to take a step back and go back and read THE BILL OF RIGHTS. just because there are people with different nationality does not mean that all of us are criminal or are ilegal here. SHERIFF JOE YOU REALLY NEED TO TAKE A STEP BACK AND STOP BREAKING THE LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS.

BLANCA US CITIZEN AND VERY PROUD OF BEEN ONE.

Kelly, Austin, TX   October 19th, 2009 4:02 pm ET

Rick, I can't believe the comments I am reading in support of this rogue sheriff. This man cannot be allowed to continue with in this manner. His blatant disregard of the constitution must not be allowed to continue. We are suppose to be innocent before proven guilty. These people have the right under the constitution to not incriminate themselves, the right to an attorney, the right to remain silent as well as several other rights he is breaking, too many to list here. He is breaking the law to a much greater degree than any of the people he is arresting. He should be arrested if continues to break the law. The government should bring the full weight of the law on him. He should be locked up in his own jail and made to wear the same pink outfit the others have to wear. He is a pariah and a cancer, eating away at all of our liberties. People can't be arrested in our Country because of the clothes they wear, or the way they talk. Please, turn over your interviews with this man so those who are able can prosecute him. It would be great to see him put in jail with his own words.
Shame on Jon McCain for appearing to support this tumor on the constitution, the same constitution he fought to preserve. These actions are very scary to me and most people I speak with. This can't be allowed to continue

Robert   October 19th, 2009 4:02 pm ET

Rick, I question your objectivity about Sheriff Joe's raids against illegal aliens and any other attempts to reign in the open borders we've tolerated for decades with Mexico. Your guest Ruben Navarrette made a ridiculous comment, "Being an illegal immigrant isn't a crime!"!?! Excuse me? Does the word "illegal" mean anything anymore? I'm an African American, and I resent any and every person with a cause trying to saddle their pony to the Civil Rights Era of the 60s and 70s. The only connection between African Americans and Latinos is that our spanish speaking cousins are the NEW slaves on the plantation and white politicians don't want to anger the Latino vote to do what's right!

African Americans were CITIZENS of this country! Illegal aliens are not. African Americans were routinely brutalized, murdered and LEGALLY victimized by whites in this country – terrorism on a grand scale. While Latinos abandon their homes and towns south of the border for better financial opportunity here in the States. Rather than collapsing our civil support structure as California has experienced, they should fight the powers that be and the mafia in their country to end the corruption and achieve the better life they seek where they live.

I have no problem with Latino citizens and "legal" immigrants. I resent the Latino political agenda which assumes that everything Latino is their god-given right, including their right to invade this country without repercussion. The only reason they're getting away with it is because our white power structure needs their underpaid slave population since African Americans no longer fit that bill. The Japanese became too well-paid in the 70s and 80s, now we're sending our slave trade to China for the same reason. Enough is enough!

q putnam   October 19th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

I am appalled with the reporting of Rick Sanchez. This is not reporting it is opinion / agenda driven propaganda. Ricks interview with Sheriff Arpaio as it always was disgraceful and what Rick Sanchez is doing is trampling the moral fabric of our country and promoting illegal behavior of his fellow Latins.
I find Ricks approach to journalism insulting and detrimental to the well being of law abiding Americans.

Citizen of the World

MSgt T Sheets   October 19th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

Rick, hey somebody has to do something about the ILLEGAL IMMAGRATION PROBLEM... When you enter a country without proper documentaion yes you are commiting a crime, ask North Korea or Iran, well I know we can't be that bad but someone has to do something as the feds aren't, as Joe continues to get re-elected someone likes what he's doing. It is a sever problem and needs our governments attention. What are you doing as a citgizen to help out the problem by slamming a guy who is doing something? And as far as who's responsibility is it, it's every citizens to take care of it. Read what is required for you to do as a citizen to be a good citizen in the US start with the 'Preamble', then continue with that document.

DC Bob   October 19th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

Now, more than ever, I am convinced that we need to close our Southern border, mine it, and put several army divisions to protect it...

But then again, we should really start at the top as to why illegals are allowed here. Why are they here? Because the business-government elite wants them here. They provide ready cheap labor and, with forthcoming legalization, new and ready votes for the plutocrats in power. It doesn't really matter who is in power – republicans or democrats. It's the same game, same people running things. Remember when Ted Kennedy, during the 1960's, promised that the Immigration changes were not going to change the demographic makeup of the US. Yeah, right. Look around you, people. We are being socially engineered out of our own existence and out of our own country.

I do not hate the illegals. I can understand why they are here. It's the people that allowed them to come and stay here and pit them against us that are the ones who need to be dealt with.

mike odonnell   October 19th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

hello.first let me say that ricksanchez is in my opinion is one of the best reporters on cnn but i feel he his very wrong about the sherriff. he is doing what we all should be doing that is getting the bad guy's at all costs and if not there will be no law and the good will lose. mike

E Harrington   October 19th, 2009 4:06 pm ET

Mr Sanchez;
Sherriff Arpaio may use unconventional tactics, but it's easy for you to judge this when you don't live near the war zone that is the Mexican border. What I resent is when you and Mr. Navarrette suggest that people who cross border illegally have not committed a crime. This is to say the United States as a sovereign nation does not have the right to determine who enters in its obligation to protect its citizenry, the right to enforce laws prohibiting undocumented immigration. You can't dismiss this totally, then use constitutional prohibitions of illegal searches and seizures to defend these people. I remember seeing signs during the protests a few years ago that said "We are not criminals." Sorry, but a certain proportion of them ARE criminals, and US has a right to screen them, using all available technology to prevent them from entering. They crossed the border. They KNOW it's illegal. They're taking a chance, just like I would be if I crossed into Mexico illegally. The legal issues are black and white.

Ray R   October 19th, 2009 4:06 pm ET

Rick Sanchez is another apologist for Nancy Pelosi. 'Illegal aliens' are 'undocumented Americans'. My goodness, isn't that obvious. Well, they are 'undocumented Americans' just like illegal drug dealers are unlicensed pharmacists. Bleeding heart liberals will destroy this country if not stopped soon. Government is NOT the provider of last resort, for Americans or anyone else. Send the illegals back to where they came from. And we don't break up families. Send the family back as well. The family is just as illegal as the principle culprit. Then amend the 14th Amendment of the Constitution: this amendment was originally adopted to encourage emigration to the new world of America. It must be amended so that only persons born of LEGAL RESIDENTS are American citizens at birth.

This country is going into bankruptcy because of the cost of supporting illegals. California is the prime example. Just how a U.S. court can declare that U.S. citizen taxpayers must provide assistance to illegals makes no sense to me. The U.S. provides more assistance to 3rd world countries that any other on the planet. We don't need a court to demand that we do it.

Ray   October 19th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

Dear Rick,

I get that you have a bully pulpit ,are Hispanic and polititians in the Southwest placate your people for their votes.
Please get off sheriff Joe A. He enforces the laws instead of looking the other way. I support him because he keeps the rif-raf off our streets making them safe to walk. You attack him becase he's an easy target, an old white man in a position of power. But as you know, there are also many old white people in the Phoenix metro. Why not interview the employers or trafficers who enrich themselves illegally exploiting your people?
Thanks,

Ray

darwin bjorkman   October 19th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

It seems that mr Sanchez gets all or most of his coments from Spanish type personalities how about getting some comments from AMERICAN people who have no axe to grind. It seems to me the illegals do not seem to understand ( what breaking the law means) Tell the illegals to try crossing the border in Cuba and see what happens?
A concerned American DaRWIN bJORKMAN.

IM4NY   October 19th, 2009 4:08 pm ET

By the way, Arpaio won the debate in today's interview. That's because he's absolutely correct. Sometimes it can come across that you're making points when you're sitting in the host's chair, bullying your guest but when your're wrong, you're wrong. Most Americans, if not all, expect to have security in the cities and towns of the USA. Most of us value the protection of law enforcement.

Lv   October 19th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

great question: how does he know the people he arrest are illegal? "by their clothes" was his response, how about illegals from other countries besides mexican and south americans ? how do they dress? in oriental "type clothes or other ethnic type of clothes? How about all those that r LEgal and are commttng drug related crimes? It's fine to go after all those illegals that are in drug related crimes or other crimes. but all those that are working to earn a living to raise their kids in American and those that r studying to survive? why then doesn't he go after the companies that hire ALL illegals not just the mexicans and south americans? Let's see what will happen: restaurants, hotels, landscaping,..this means not only the fast food restaurants, but the expensive luxury hotels too...
I do agree going after drug related crimes specially in AZ since it's so close to Mex. and the crimes are getting worse by the day near the border, how many american citizens on the border patrol r getting paid by the drug cartels to pass people thru?

Linda   October 19th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

Rick, rick, rick, Just when I start to like you; e.g. your excellent interview with Sheriff Arpaio and the follow-up with the writer from San Diego, you make me see red again with your next story. Good story about the 4 top women politicians and the intense criticism they receive. You blew it, however, with your sexist comments and flirting with your co-newscaster. It was embarrassing and appeared embarrassing to her also.

Michael Bingham   October 19th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Poor "Ricky" Ricardo Sanchez! He hates America so much, he defends illegal's, pot smokers, and reverse racists.

His latest swear-word against American's is to ridicule them as "Natavist." So it follows that an Illegal, pot smoking, non-American must be a.... Foreigner?

Bob Johnson   October 19th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

Your reporting is racist and biased. Your interview with Sheriff Arpaio proves that. Sheriff Arpaio is elected by the citizens of Maricopa County. Besides the authorization of the 287g program that allows him to enforce federal immigration laws. He is also allowed to enforce state laws. State laws passed by the citizens of Arizona also allows him to arrest those here illegally.

Thank God he is one of the few in this state that does. We need more Sheriffs and Police around the country that enforces our laws and not look the other way. You only heard from the Department of Homeland Security what you wanted to hear and turned that around with your usual bias, and then again took what you wanted to hear from Sheriff Arpaio and tried turning that around.

You should be fired for that type of reporting.

D. Kolysko   October 19th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Rick, A personal experience; our daughter moved to Phoenix a couple of years ago. She met, married and had our first grandchild by; an illegal Mexican immigrant (Love is blind). When the child was about 6 months old, his father was picked up in Phoenix, and deported to Mexico, with the clothes on his back. Luckily, he got his "1" phone call and alerted my daughter as to what was happening. My daughter and his son , are now on public assistance. We have spent $1000's assisting them, and trying to get the proper papers for his return to this country. I would like to know if there are more stories like this.
Thanks for lending an ear.

Jim Carey   October 19th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

If the sheriff is wrong for arresting the people who are illegal, then is not illegal for Home Land Security to go through my hand carry baggage when I get on an airplane, when they ask me if they can go through my stuff and take away my toothpaste and shaving cream. What are my rights? And also if I cross into Mexico or Canada without permission what do those governments do to me just let me stay there as an illegel alien or do they put me in jail or send me back to the US or supply me with a job that none of their citizens want to do. Are we all in favor of open border's where everyone can just come and go as they please. If we have the rule of law then let us inforce it against all illegals no matter what country they come from.

DugFmJamul   October 19th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Ray,

Not only does Rick Sanchez have a "bully pulpit", he's also a Bully!

The FED told Sheriff Joe not to enforce the law-period, that should be enough for any reasonable person to fathom that the Federal Government is not about the "Rule of Law" but "Selective Enforcement" instead.

Ray R   October 19th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

How about this suggestion: display comments in descending date order. Or at least provide an option to display ascending or descending order. Seems like I shouldn't have to scroll through 2 or 3 pages of comments to see mine.

Lee   October 19th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

I listen to you talking to mr. Joe Arpaio, then listen to you talking to this know it all Mr. Ruben Mavarrette.it seem to me that you and Mr. Navarrette are for the illegals crossing our borders. Mr. Sanchez when the conversation is going your way you grin and smile. i could see the disapproval in your face because Mr. Arpaio was keeping you in place with your bias ideal of the law. i don't care to watch you on CNN but i want to hear more of what you say and your ideals before i make up my mine about you. i don't need a comment via email from you. but if anyone has as an ideal on helping the great sheriff Joe Arpaio from people like you and the other bias people like Mavarrette let me hear from you.......... this is america Rick.

Norman   October 19th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

I rarely watch the liberal biased mainstream media outlets like CNN and now I know why.
I would rather watch the right wing biased FOX . At least they don't pretend they are being neutral.

Doris M.   October 19th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

Rick; I am not surprised that you would attack our Sheriff Joe. There are those here in the political world who would love to see him defeated in trying to keep us safe here in Arizona. You made a comment that WE are not near the border! We ARE the border! Just last week I went out to dinner in my town of Surprise and decided at the last minute not to go to this resturant a few blocks from my home. Good thing I did not stop there because after dinner at another place I went by that same place and there was a crime tape surrounding the entire building! A couple had eaten dinner and just got into their car when two men pulled the driver out of the car and shot him dead. They got away but I am sure the sheriff is on their tail. Probably another drug deal gone bad. We are now seeing crime in the NW valley and that is why Sheriff Joe was out here looking for the bad guys. Why don't you move on down here Rick and take some time to live with the crime that is happening here AT THE BORDER!

Thom Rock (Vancouver, WA usa)   October 19th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

Rick, you hit my button. How so many men treat women. It is not only the horrid treatment women are subjected to in many parts of the world, but here in the USA too. I go crazy over this. At times I am ashamed of the male species. Don't they get it, their mother is a woman.... show some respect, no show a lot of respect.

Ed.Waller   October 19th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

Rick, As you are Hispanic I can understand your feelings on this matter but Sherrif Joe is just doing the job, that the Federal Gov. should be doing. I am and always have been a Democrat but I am against this illigal immigration invasion. Just think of all the crimes
that these illigals have been responsible for. The three young students who were murdered (exercution style) in New Jersey and the Father and his three sons who were gunned down in a road rage incident
in California. As you know, there are thousands of such crimes each
year and these would not be happing if our laws were followed. Now I admit, that the sherrif is a little crude but he is doing the job that the people of Maricopa County elected him to do and your cheap shot about Bulldog O,Conner was uncalled for. keep bashing Rush, because he deserves it, but lay off Sherrif Joe. By the way, I noticed that your friend from California, Ruben Navarette, is also Hispanic, so we can understand where you are both coming from.

Lisa   October 19th, 2009 4:19 pm ET

I am not surprised by the behavior of these animals (not qualified to be called human) that mistreat and take part in the dog fighting rings that have been exposed. I am sickened, angered, disgusted and completely outraged by their actions and treatment of these dogs. I also am outraged at the treatment of these criminals....they are given a warm bed to sleep in, food to eat at least three times a day and have medical attention at their disposal. What did these animals have at the hands of these criminals...oh, that's right, nothing but pain, anguish, fear and death. When will we as a society start making the punishments match the crimes we KNOW these people are guilty of once proven in a court of law. Seems appropriate to me that the short chains around the neck, lack of food and shelter and being forced to fight others of their kind for the sick entertainment of another species would be what is deserved. But as an evolved species, we find it inhumane to dish out that kind of treatment, right?

Fred Mullins   October 19th, 2009 4:21 pm ET

Rick,
I know that CNN is a 24 hour news network and you have to fill the time slot, but for goodness sakes, let Sheriff Arpaio alone. We need more like him. This country has gone too far toward being politically correct and protecting the rights of of people who do not qualify. I would be interested to know the statistics that show how many of all the arrests that he makes turn out to be normal everyday "legal" citizens. We never hear that number. He does have probable cause to question all persons that are in a stopped vehicle. If the feds don't like what he is doing and say he is breaking the law then they should arrest him. Otherwise, let him do his job.

Garry   October 19th, 2009 4:23 pm ET

i've looked at your listeners comments and the overwhelming majority agree with the Sheriff that ILLEGAL means ILLEGAL – STOP deliberately mixing up illegal with legal immigration.

Kenny G   October 19th, 2009 4:32 pm ET

We're losing sight of the fact that illegal immigration is against the law. Since the Federal Gov't. has failed to enforce immigration laws the sheriff has taken this enforcement responsibility on. A large majority of inmates in our jails are ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS who committed violent & other crimes (other than illegally entering the country). ICE refuses to accept the responsibility of enforcing the immigration laws and routinely releases illegals or turns them away or fail to pick them up from local authorities for deportation. Our health care system is burdened by illegals going to hospitals for care for free because the hospitals are required to treat everyone regardless of whether they can afford it. I'm not a bigot. My parents entered this country legally and became naturalized citizens. I was born here. Just like after 9/11 it became necessary to "profile" potential terrorists because all of the participants in the attacks were middle eastern/arabic so it makes sense to scrutenize those folks. Likewise, hispanics behaving erratically or running when they see a law enforcement officer should be questioned. As long as Arpaio stays within the law of probable cause or questions people in a vehicle on a legitimate traffic stop he's doing his sworn duty to enforce the law. No different than when police question passengers in a car stopped for a traffic violation and a passenger has a warrant - shown on TV reality shows "Cops" and "Street Patrol". Let's keep the focus that illegal immigrants have broken the laws of every state and the USA and it is a very significant problem for our country burdening our health care and welfare systems. US Citizens are paying for this problem.

Fr. Glenn B. Jenks   October 19th, 2009 4:36 pm ET

Rick,
I was able to listen to only a part of your piece today on Sheriff Arpaio. You did a masterful job of allowing him to reveal his true character. I am an Episcopal priest, recently retired. My last parish was in a little town about 35 miles north of Phoenix, AZ, called Cave Creek, in Maricopa County. For years my parish operated a day laborer center, six days a week, helping mostly hispanic migrants get work each day and seeing that they were treated with dignity and paid justly for their work. We fed them breakfast each day, helped them get medical and dental care when they needed it, and mediated disagreements between workers and employers when they arose. We did this initially at the request of local town officials who wanted to keep day laborers off the streets, where they posed a traffic hazard, and away from local business who had problems with workers loitering in front of their businesses. In January of 2008 Sheriff Arpiao targeted our church to shut down this program. He stationed his deputies at the entrance to our parking lot and stopped any car that left with a hispanic person in it, on some spurious traffic violation. The deputy immediately released the driver with no citation and arrested the hispanic person. We had no alternative but to shut down the program.
In your interview today with the Sheriff you did a thoroughly professional job of allowing him to "hang himself", and he did. I have long enjoyed and respected your ability as a journalist, and in this instance you were "at the top of your game."
Keep up the good work.
Fr. Glenn

Kelly, Austin, TX   October 19th, 2009 4:37 pm ET

I am reading all these comments and I just want to scream. I can't believe all of these people are writing in support of his actions. Why can't they see that this argument is about the sherrif's actions against legal citizens, not illegal. He is arresting by sweeps that are breaking the constitutional rights of the LEGAL CITIZENS caught in the net, NOT THE ILLEGAL. I will hope that the hundreds of people who wrote in supporting the Sherrif will find themselves at work and subject to arrest when Mr. Arpaio shows up to conduct one of his sweeps. I want to be there to document the sweep and see how they feel about Mr. Arpaio as they are escorted to the Paddy Wagon in handcuffs. In jail, they will be made to wear his pink prison outfit, have to hire a lawyer, have to get your mug shot, use the restroom in a cage in front of everybody and I could list more. I want to see how much they support him then. We are a country of laws, laws that protect the LEGAL CITIZENS, not the ILLEGAL. Our LEGAL CITIZENS
have the right to not be subjected to these types of rogue actions. Slap your forehead and say, "Oh yeah, the Constitution protects the LEGAL, I could of had a V8"

Ed.Waller   October 19th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Further to my comments above, just a word to the wise, to all of you bloggers who continue to bash the Democrats over this illegal immigration agument, most Democrats I know, are against illegal
immigration, so your comments just sound so racist and dumb. Better to make your points without the bashing.

MJ   October 19th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

I NEVER watch CNN, but had to suffer through a show while in a repair shop. I saw the interview with the sheriff and I now realize why I NEVER watch CNN. This Rick fellow is belligerent, arrogant and rude. I will stay with Foxnews where they stand up for American citizens and the Constitution.

Karina   October 19th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

IT'S FUNNY HOW IF THIS COUNTRY WAS NEVER TAKEN AWAY FROM MEXICANS IN THE FIRST PLACE, EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU WOULD BE ILLEGAL AND TRYING TO COME HERE FOR A BETTER LIFE. I CALL IT HYPOCRICY!

shaolinprince   October 19th, 2009 4:42 pm ET

First, I would appreciate it if you would stop comparing Sheriff Joe Arpaio to Bull Connor there is no comparison. There is a substantial difference between these two.

• Bull Connor was not looking for criminal activity (illegal Immigrants), he was violating the rights of Black people because they were Black, no other reason.
• Bull Connor used water hoses and dogs to physically attack, demean and circumvent the innate rights of American citizens.
• Sheriff Joe Arpaio is going after illegal immigrants, who by definition with their existence here are violating the laws of America.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio may be trying to accomplish this end erroneously, but I.C.E. is doing nothing to control the enormous influx of illegal immigrants from setting up residency in America. I seem to remember in the early 1990’s seeing the military turning away Haitian illegal immigrants in the middle of the ocean. Why is it that when someone goes after Mexican illegal immigrants it is a problem? It is a serious problem in the poorer neighborhoods, (such as where I reside) because they take all of the jobs that we use to hold. Even McDonalds hires illegal immigrants who work for a month or so until their immigration status is revealed. I do not go into the McDonalds in my neighborhood any more because 95% of the workers are Mexican (most do not speak English), but 90% of the customers do not speak Spanish. It is the American people who are suffering from huge incursion of illegal immigrants.

When you compare Sheriff Joe Arpaio to Bull Connor, you are mocking the horrifying experience that Black people were subjected to because of racism. The differences between the two are extensive. Please stop comparing Sheriff Joe Arpaio to Sheriff Bull Connor, the only thing that they have in common is that they were/are sheriffs.

Alice27   October 19th, 2009 4:55 pm ET

Rick, you asked what the difference was between the Dem ladies and
the Rep women. I would say intelligence, integrity and independence.
The Dem ladies DO NOT BLATENTLY LIE because the party tells them to. They know history and our country's responsibilities in the world. And they have superior intelligence. The Republican women are just mouthpieces for the Party of No.

Regarding the southern border. We were invaded from the south. They
just did not have their uniforms on. And where were our defenders from the Dept. of Defense (which I have renamed the Dept. of Attack)?
Overseas, attacking some other country and then protecting and re-
building their country. Bring our troops home. We need them here.

Tom Bell   October 19th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

Rick,

Your criticism of the sheriff using "dress or language" fo find suspects would mean we couldn't consider gang signs, colors, language or dress either. As much as we are against "profiling", face it; criminals often fit profiles.

rob   October 19th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

RICK, I KNOW YOU THROW LOW BLOWS THAT'S WHY I HAVEN'T
WATCHED... I WAS PASSING BY....YOU MADE A COMMENT AND I
DON'T KNOW WHAT WAS WORST!!!!!!!!!!! YOU COMPARED SHERIFF
JOE TO BULL CONNER; WHICH MEANS YOU COMPARED BLACK
PEOPLE TO ILLEGAL ALIENS; WHAT ABOUT COMPARING HARRIET
TUBMAN'S UNDERGROUND RAILROAD TO THE ILLEGAL ALIENS
UNDERGROUND RAILROAD LED BY PEOPLE THAT SOUND LIKE
YOUR ASST FROM HOMELAND THAT WORK WITH AMNESTY INTL
AND ACLU AND YOUR REPORTER WHY NOTHING TO COMPARE?
LATINO MINISTER TALKED ABOUT 47 MILLION PEOPLE THAT IS
WHY THERE ARE NO MORE SHERIFF JOE'S ...........INSTEAD OF
ENFORCING LAWS; THEN WE WOULDN'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM!
RUNNING AROUND CHASING VOTES AND GETTING ILLEGAL
ALIENS CITIZENSHIP..............

rotteng   October 19th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

Interesting that your commentary about sheriff Arpaio is from Latino reporters only. Hum!

Aaron   October 19th, 2009 5:19 pm ET

I am Aaron from phoenix AZ and If you lived in my neighborhood you may think different of this situation. Since when do ILLEGAL aliens have the same rights as a US CITIZEN???!!?!? Come live in my neighborhood for a few days and see what really happens instead of being cooped up in your high dollar home not seeing the true side of things!
Go Sheriff Joe

Gino Rocha   October 19th, 2009 5:22 pm ET

I notice you show a lot of favoritism toward illegals. Why do you show so much anger toward Joe Arpaio when he is doing his job in Arizona. Since he has been cracking down on illegals in this state, we have had less home invasions and less car thefts. When illegals come to the state of Arizona, they steal social security numbers and take jobs which are less than minimum wages thereby hurting the people of Arizona. I think you're letting your Latino background control your emotions. Also, when illegals are sick or get hurt, they go to our hospitals or emergency rooms, and we have to pay the bill. I am a democrat, and I feel this way. I think our sheriff is doing a great job!

Melanie, CA   October 19th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

Thank you for pointing out Sheriff Joe's self promotion. This man clearly enjoys the spot light. It may have started with caving in to political pressure, but I think he liked the attention his new position brought him and now it is its own reward.

Rick, thank you for the DOG FIGHTING story. This issue needs more attention. I am so happy to hear of the great pro bono work of Greg Norred. His work is worthy of nomination into CNN's Hero program. This is so appalling, I hug my dog and cry every time I see a story like this. The cruelty to innocent animals should be prosecuted with far heavier penalties, longer sentences and more arrests.

Dez   October 19th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

I was hit by an illegal immigrant... he had to call someone to translate tried getting me to go to his friends shop to fix my car and not call the cops.. cops came I paid for everything and guess what he had no license no ID nothing so he hit me and I was left with fixing my car and everything and he is no where to be found and they can't find him because his name was so generic and he had no information... also Identities are stolen or bought for illegals.... they flood our hospitals for their sick children because they can't go to the ob/gyn for their prenantal appointments or their pediatrician because they don't have one because of ligitiment ID even if we gave them amnistey things wouldn't change. Sheriff Joe is in the right and lives in the area truely affected by it.... what can you say?

K. Antoinette   October 19th, 2009 5:44 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez,

I must agree with the majority of the people who have commented on this topic. ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is not fair at all. I cannot fathom why you cannot see it as a major problem? My question to you is, what gives ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS the right to come over here illegally? I wish that you would think about all of the other immigrants who have applied for citizenship to the US LEGALLY. Why can't Illegal Immigrants do so as well? what is the problem?

I think that instead of the government, wasting its time on frivolous matters, someone with some sense needs to focus on protecting our borders. We need protection at our borders!!!

Robert   October 19th, 2009 5:52 pm ET

Correction to Stephen's comment (3:24pm) about the "You Don't Speak for Me" organization:

The email address for the organization he mentions is ((edited)) /, not ".com". Its about time law-abiding Latino citizens started speaking out about the wave of ILLEGAL immigrants flooding our country. Hope this helps!

Phillip   October 19th, 2009 5:58 pm ET

Really Rick. The one time I even find a video of yours that I am interested in watching you state that illegal immigrants are protected from illegal search and seizure by the constitution. I do not know your political leanings, but liberals have wrongly asserted also that illegal immigrants are protected by the constitution. The constitution protects CITIZENS of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Not those who are here illegaly. Also, you mention that the Sheriff is no where near the border. Well I live 8 hours or so from the border here in Texas and let me tell you it is close enough. I can come up with numerous examples as to why all illegal immigrants should be deported. I'm for immigration as well as most people on here, but not illegal immigration. I encourage more sheriff's to deport those they find here legally and to go to the areas where they are picked up for construction jobs and ship them back.

Tom   October 19th, 2009 5:59 pm ET

Leave Joe alone. Unless you live in a border state that has these issues, you basically have no clue about what goes on. Most honest tax paying citizens want a stop to all the illegal activity that just STARTS with illegally crossing the border. You want to become a US citizen, DO IT RIGHT! I for one am sick and tired of my tax dollars going to support people who are not even citizens of this country.
GO JOE, we support you. And for all of you out there that want to try and play that racist card on me, my first best man was black and the 2nd time I got married my best man was a Mexican.

Stephen   October 19th, 2009 6:01 pm ET

Rick, how about interviewing Lou Dobbs on the Arizona Sheriff story??? When Lou had him on, he seemed to think the guy was some sort of "American Hero" for doing what he does!

jim vicalvi   October 19th, 2009 6:03 pm ET

After reading all of your comments, looni, your name tells the story.

Ed DeYoung   October 19th, 2009 6:11 pm ET

Mr.Sanchez
I have been listening to this debate since you have been running it more often. The first question i would ask is don't you think there is something wrong with starting to ask a question like "Besides being here illegally..." That in itself answers all questions does it not? I watch your show along with some of the shows from other networks and the thing that bothers me most both from the left and from the right is no one is condemning the fact that our government has ane continues to fail my constitional rights to protect the borders of our country. I realize you're an intelligent man so tell me are you not interested in protecting the rights of the legal taxpayers like myself who built this great country? I did not see any Americans waving a Mexican flag in any of the wars in this country.
As far as the Federal Government, well you yourself have been reporting on campaign finance and voting records which is of course is just one of the more obvious avenues of corruption. The government of today has no intention of doing what's right for the people of this great nation, after all their paid more not to!

Tom from Phoenix   October 19th, 2009 6:22 pm ET

Nice hack job of the sheriff's words, Rick. You're out of control. Your bias (and that of CNN) has just become ridiculous. This isn't news. You guys will fact check a SNL skit about Obama, but spew out slanderous, made-up quotes about a conservative without even thinking of checking into it. Watching this interview with you reminds me why I get my news from sources other than CNN now.

I love how people who don't live in AZ can tell us about how wonderful it is to have people pouring into our state illegally- nevermind the drug trafficking, gangs, murders, theft, poverty and strain on the police, school and healthcare systems that comes with it. Sheriff Joe is OVERWHLEMINGLY elected year after year in AZ, because he does what he is supposed to do– ENFORCE THE LAW.
We need more people like this! Thank you Sheriff Joe!

Alan Savela   October 19th, 2009 6:25 pm ET

First of all, Morton appears to be an idiot. Was he ever in LE? Any road time.

Secondly, Sanchez fits in with Morton. He came across as an idiot too.

Go get 'em Joe!!!!!!

Mark Podgorski   October 19th, 2009 6:28 pm ET

What an "interview" with all your interuptions and YOUR personal opinion I will sum it up. YOU sir are a pompas ass.

Tony   October 19th, 2009 6:30 pm ET

Rick,

That was one of the worst interviews I have ever seen. You are an idiot! This Sheriff is doing EXACTLY what he should be doing....arresting people that are not here legally. The federal government should be doing this....does homeland security mean anything to you?

Jeff   October 19th, 2009 6:32 pm ET

I think the sheriff is doing a great job and he should continue to enforce the laws of the United States. I think Rick Sanchez was disrespectful and rude to the sheriff. Also from the clip that was shown, The ICE official did not say the sheriff was breaking any laws, he only said that they didn't agree with his policy and that was not their focus. Well if its not ICE's job to protect the borders, what is??? I think the Sheriff is a true American and should be applauded for his actions.

Will   October 19th, 2009 6:35 pm ET

The only reason Joe is still in office is all the racist retired folks in town who support him rounding up illegals at gun point like they are animals. There are better methods for enforcing the law and this guy is spending my tax dollars to fund raids where 200 officers and 50 vehicles drive around town for half the day apparently to "suppress crime." How do you suppress crime when all the law enforcement officers are hanging out together in a cabinet manufacturing facility? Sheriff Joe has got to go!

FYI he also won the last election by using slanderous ads against his opponent.

Carl Robinson   October 19th, 2009 6:36 pm ET

Dear Mr. Sanchez,

I think you might want to look a little closer at the wording and intent of the Constitution. The Constitution was written for the citizens of the United States on how to write, enforce, and adjudicate laws, provide for common well being of the citizens of the United States. The Constitution stands, and it's legal protections protect citizens of the United States, not people who invade from other countries, come across the borders illegally. They are not US Citizens, they don't fall under the same protections of the Constitution as Citizens of this country. They have the right to being treated with respect and dignity, they have the right to be housed, fed, and taken care of until they are either charged, tried, and convicted of a crime, or to just be deported.

Sheriff Arpaio's mandate is not just to enforce the city, county, and state laws of Arizona, he is also there to enforce US Law. Entering this country illegally from another country, for any reason, is a violation of US Law. He has the authority to enforce the law, regardless of what the representative of ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) says. Further, I don't think officials like Mr. John Morton are doing their job of Immigration Enforcement, and haven't been since the middle of the Bush Administration. I think a case could be made in US District Court to file charges of criminal neglect against these officials who have not done their jobs and innocent Americans, and their families, have become victims of the criminal element, especially along the border states.

So Mr. Sanchez, I don't think your motive in this is altruistic. I think you have another agenda and I think you should tell Americans what your agenda is. Is it the following, "stop harassing illegal immigrants, they have a right to be here", is that your agenda? If so, can you defend your position based on US Constitutional Law.

Can you say how it's right that many American Citizens who immigrated here legally, went through all the paperwork and legal steps to become an American Citizen, and now it should be seen as legal just to be here?

How can you defend that? How, in your mind, can that be right? How can you defend that persons who came to this country illegally, have a right to benefits of US Citizens?

r.frech   October 19th, 2009 6:38 pm ET

now Rick, just read all the comments here -
nearly all tell you that you are wrong
and Sherrif Joe is right.
but then agian we know where you come from ?

P. Aubrey   October 19th, 2009 6:43 pm ET

I have been reading all the exploits of Sheriff Arpaio and wish to congratulate him for doing what is right. Here we have a guy that truly cares about the law unlike those lefties always defending the criminal's rights. I wish we had more people like Sheriff Arpaio here in Canada.

As far as this guy Rick Sanchez is concerned, he's all left and all wrong. On top of that he hasn’t even got the courtesy to let people talk. He really is full of himself.

Blair   October 19th, 2009 6:47 pm ET

Rick, it is amazing to me that you are getting on a sheriff for doing his job. He is basically riding this country of illegals and you are implying he should not be doing this. Are you in favor of these illegals continuing to break the law – as you pointed out many times with the sheriff from Arizona isn't the illegals being here alone a violation of the constitution. Not to mention many of them from MS 13 are committing crimes. I give big Kudos to the sheriff for doing his job and also fighting through all the biased politics of not only CNN but our liberal based white house. I am tired of CNN and your biased left wing views of things. What happen to reporting real news? You know from now on I am going to watch and view FOX news at least they have a more balanced reporting style.

kirby   October 19th, 2009 6:49 pm ET

Rick: I was a field collection agent with a territory from Phoenix to Nogales and Douglas, on the Mexico border. You and Janet need to come down from your pedestals and ride along with law enforcement in southern Arizona for a few days, and then you will find yourself in agreement with Sheriff Joe and his policies. Why do you suppose Arizona has the highest identity theft in the nation? Illegals. Highest vehicle theft in the nation? Illegals. High crime rate? Illegals. Poor quality of education? Trying to accomodate Spanish speaking illegals along with English speaking citizens. The list goes on, and I support Joe.

Jerald Blankenship, Sr.   October 19th, 2009 6:55 pm ET

Rick,

Correct me if I am wrong, but you actually have to be a CITIZEN to be covered by the Constitution. Thus, the effectiveness of the "Enemy Combatant" designation that was utilized by the Bush Administration so frequently. Designating US citizens as enemy combatants effectively strips them of citizenship, thus depriving them of Constitutional protections.

Like enemy combatants, illegal aliens are not entitled to any Constitutional protections BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT US CITIZENS.

Nice try Rick, but "that dog don't hunt."

Jay Miller   October 19th, 2009 7:06 pm ET

Rick,

It's time you get some views from Joe's supporters on your program instead of some lame reporter from San Diego whose father used to be a policeman. Wow, what credentials to bring in for opposing views! Joe is just doing what the voters elected him to do and he is taking up the slack from the Feds who are hamstrung by politics. Bring on some comments for Maricopa county residents who voted for Joe.

Jay Miller

Ross   October 19th, 2009 7:17 pm ET

Sheriff Joe of Arizona seems to be the only American that cares for his country. I will vote for Joe every time!

Great man Joe,keep up the work we are behind you!

rightthingtodo   October 19th, 2009 7:17 pm ET

Maricopa county is the BIGGEST DRUG ENTRY INTO THE USA IT IS A FACT...WHY IS SHERIFF JOE NOT CATCHING DRUG CARTELS.
IT IS A FACT ACCORDING TO THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC THAT MORE COCAINE AND HEROINE COME INTO THIS COUNTRY THRU MARICOPA COUNTY THAN SAN DIEGO AND CALEXICO TOGETHER..WHERE ARE THE DRUG ARRESTS

LockeintheBox   October 19th, 2009 7:36 pm ET

Sheriff Joe needs neither the permission nor approvalof a federal agency to enforce the laws within his county.

Perhaps what is really at stake here is that Sheriff Arpaio has found an effective means of dealing with the severe problem of illegal immigration rather than the inefficient federal agency, ICE.

Rick: Your behavior towards Sheriff Arpaio is despicable. You bombard him with accusations, but do not even allow him to finish a response before you continue. We have a federal system of government, Rick, which allows for a division of authority between state, federal, and local entities. The federal government is NOT the end-all and be-all of authority within our nation.

jessie shedd   October 19th, 2009 7:40 pm ET

I honestly believe there is an intelligent, dedicated, responsible American alive today ... we're behind you, Sheriff ... and if you ever DO get on a national ticket we'll be FORTUNATE!!

Mike R.   October 19th, 2009 7:44 pm ET

Now I know why it is called a "Dirty Sanchez". I still wonder how you can violate a person's constitutional rights when they aren't a citizen of the country for who's rights this constitution was designed to protect.

Rick A.   October 19th, 2009 7:50 pm ET

I am blown away by the comments of most everyone that seems to have drank the koolaid of Arpaio. I am an Arizona native and the sherriff is my one greatest embarrasment. He's not a law enforcement official, he is a master of publicity and one of the best at preying on people's fears. His one motivation is getting re-elected. He responds as a total moron in any interview and I love the way Rick Sanchez pressed him when he avoiding answering direct questions. Did you people not see that!!!!

Our state and country is filled with many illegal immigrants. It is also filled with bail jumpers, dead beat dads/moms, felons avoiding prosecution and arrest. I am talking about US citizens. Why is Joe afraid to pursue these people? First it's dangerous. Secondly, not so many news cameras around.

Wake up people. Arpaio is violating human and constitutional rights. You wanna be next???

ALBERT LUONGO   October 19th, 2009 8:02 pm ET

Natasha, it siunds good to me what Joe A is doing

John Silvis   October 19th, 2009 8:09 pm ET

Rick,
Comparing Sheriff Joe to Bull Connors was really a "cheap shot".
There is no comparison between what these two people did.
In fact your snyde remark belittles the civil rights movement which
was not about foreign nationals who blatently disregard our laws by the tens of millions. It was about citizens being mistreated by racists.
In fact no other country in the world treats "illegal aliens" with as much
tolerance as the United States does to Mexican invaders.
Rick your name is Sanchez and you have an extreme bias toward
people from Mexico and Central American. Nothing justifies your
prejudice here. In Italy this mindset is call La Costra Nostra, which means "our own".Now please listen carefully this is important.
Whenever you treat one group of people with a different standard than another group this is prejudice. Your tribalims is blatent and tribalism
is the basis of all racism, bigotry, ethnic and racial prejudice. Rick you are a tribalist and your inability to treat all people by the same standards is inexcusable. Mexicans horribly mistreat illegal aliens that enter that corrupt country. That is a fact. You will never hear the truth about Mexico terrible abuse of immigrants. But you are ignorant of what doesn't fit your prejudices. How convient. for you. Go ahead, have some courage...report the truth about how you Mexican streat illegals. Honestly compare our actions to that of your corrupt
country of Mexico. I dare you!

randall   October 19th, 2009 8:15 pm ET

Rick,
Your accusation today was ridiculous! Racism and what Bull Connor did in the 60's is in no way comparable to what Sheriff Arpaio is doing. He's not sending people back to Mexico because they are Mexicans – he's doing it because they are living here ILLEGALLY! Leaching off our system, Costing us Billions, and causing the crime rate to go up. He's sick of it, the people of Arizona are sick of it (as well as a millions of other tax paying citizens) and you should be sick of it as well – So stop being a Moron!

Rick your nationality and aliance is showing thru. Stop sticking up for people that come here illegally. If they are here without going thru the proper channels then they broke our laws and are ILLEGAL. If you like them so much and want to help them move to mexico or south america and live with them.

Sheriff Joe must go... but rick needs to listen to the answers for the questions he asks... the sheriff left himself open several times and rick missed them all.

David   October 19th, 2009 8:28 pm ET

After having read most of the posts to this thread, it is very apparent that Mr. Sanchez is extremely biased in his reporting. When the current administration tries to silence Fox news and Talk Radio for biased news, I hope that they are fair and balanced by silencing your microphone as well.

Lisa Waguespack   October 19th, 2009 8:30 pm ET

Rick, You are an Idiot and don't seem to have a clue. Sheriff Joe has more integrity than you will ever have. Sheriff Joe is an American hero trying to make a difference and do his job. Every person has a right to be here LEGALLY, and if not....get out.

I am tired of paying there way and they pay nothing into our system.
Who in their right mind would support those who break the law????

StopIllegallImmigration   October 19th, 2009 8:32 pm ET

Rick Sanchez

You deserve to have a "drop house" next door to your home. Perhaps you will finally see firsthand the crime and violence that refusing to enforce our immigration laws has brought to our country. It is a war zone in Arizona, and the liberals in the Ivory Tower will turn a blind eye until it's in their own back yard. Wake up before it's too late.

ALBERT LUONGO   October 19th, 2009 8:36 pm ET

Hey Bertil, If Joe A is breaking the law, what law is that picking up illegals and either putting them in jail or sending them back. He is keeping your kester safe while he is doing his job, and you complain about him breaking the law. Do you know how many middle eastern terrorist are coming through Mexico? Enough to blow us up. W. al luongoise up and stop being a bleeding heart and stand behind the people who are keeping you safe

Lynne   October 19th, 2009 8:37 pm ET

Sheriff Joe relies on visuals similar to what Israeli police have used for decades to great effectiveness but which is too "politically incorrect" for Americans of certain political bents: how people dress and act tells you lots about someone; direct questions coupled with watching how people act are as effective (well, actually, more so by leaps and bounds) as any random searches.
CNN's "puffer-fish" bravado and outrage says more about their lack of concern about illegals (not legals – illegals) than about real issues confronting America. These issues demand more than false aggrandizement of political correctness.

c k   October 19th, 2009 8:40 pm ET

The sheriff is doing the job that the Feds don't or don't know how to do. Rick, you are the most interrupting, self-centered loud mouth on CNN. Rush is the only one who has you beat. Better watch it or Joe will have your butt back on the bus to Mexico–where you belong.

Brenna C   October 19th, 2009 8:41 pm ET

Rick, why is this even a discussion? Whether the person swims across the river, walks through the desert, digs a tunnel, or jumps a fence if they do so without a passport or visa THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW AND THEREFORE ARE A CRIMINAL!! THERE'S YOUR PROBABLE CAUSE!! We are on this border dealing with the crime, violence, and general disregard for anyone or anything on a daily basis by these illegals! Go Joe! I'm glad he's standing up and fighting against the illegals and I'll vote for him every time because our government is not supporting our border patrol. Janet N. is nothing more than a puppet for a government who only wants to open our borders and make the situation worse not better. Stop the sensationalism and try some professionalism Rick...

ALBERT LUONGO   October 19th, 2009 8:42 pm ET

HEY LOONI, YOU FIT YOUR NAME JACKASS YOU HAVE TO BE HERE ILLEGALY NO ONE WHO PAYS TAXES COULD SOUND AS STUPID AS YOU SOUND IDIOT. AL LUONGO

ALBERT LUONGO   October 19th, 2009 8:48 pm ET

BOY ISABEL, YOU SOUND MAD. DID YOU EVER GO INTO THE STREETS AND DO A COPS JOB? I DON'T THINK SO JOE A AND HIS MEN WILL BE THE FIRST ONE YOU CALL WHEN AN ILLEGAL TRYS TO RAPE OR KILL YOU.THEN YOU WILL SAY WHY DID HE NOT CATCH THE ILLEGAL BEFOR HE COMMITTED A CRIME. ANOTHER BLEADING HEART. AL LUONGO

John Damien   October 19th, 2009 8:50 pm ET

Arpaio is doing his job, and doing it well. He should not be attacked for that. Mr. Sanchez, you should try spending a week living in an area like Maricopa County, AZ, or even Luzerne County, PA, not in a hotel, but in the home of a long-term resident. Read the local papers, watch and listen to the local news, and realize once and for all what it's like when a community is overrun by illegal immigrants who have a large percentage of gang members and drug dealers among them, who are constantly causing violence and disruption to communities that would be peaceful without them, and then rethink your stance on illegal immigration. I realize that in major metropolitan areas like New York, Los Angeles, and even Atlanta, the majority of immigrants, illegal or otherwise, have jobs, lead decent lives, and are good living people. However, in smaller cities and towns, where jobs are scarce and rent is relatively inexpensive, the worst of the worst find places where they can live cheaply and peddle drugs and cause havoc. Federal law is seemingly blind to these pockets of mayhem, and the states and local municipalities are left to deal with this problem on their own.

ALBERT LUONGO   October 19th, 2009 8:55 pm ET

KL I GUESS AS LONG AS SOMEONE TALKS TOUGH WITHOUT A TELEPROMPTER HE IS A COWBOY. BUT IF THE AHOLE IN WASHINGTON NOW DID THE SAME THING BUT PUT IT IN TERMS NO ONE COULD UNDERSTAND THEN HE IS THE MAN.

larry cantrell   October 19th, 2009 8:59 pm ET

It appears this Rick Sanchez has one mission,to help illegals as much as possible. Maybe CNN will pay all their medical bills from the commercials from drug companies. Give Americans a break,CNN. Our leaders sold out our work force by shipping jobs out of this country, now they are letting people illegally use up the tax revenue that we still have for our medical care. My next question is how much money does this Sanchez guy get from Mexico for encouraging illegal in the USA. By the way Rick,I am an educated white man, illegals have no constitutional rights. I noticed on the news cast you speak like all the listeners just have a GED or no education at all. I see you are spanish yourself,so maybe you are just bias. I am not a racist,so don't go there. Just because a white man stands up for his country does not mean he is racist.

Troy Stufflebeam   October 19th, 2009 9:01 pm ET

Rick you are a stinking MEAT HEAD of the first degree!!!!! I dont know that sheriff from Arizona, but I do know finally somebody is taking on responsibility over the feds, FINALLY!!!!!!!! we are sick and tired of the illegal aliens turning are American dream into a nightmare.............the feds have proven them selfs(there laws) time and time again to be wrong, and this sheriff Joe is right, standing up for Americans and are laws and are votes, you need to show a little more respect to this sheriff Joe MEET HEAD SANCHEZ......Troy Stufflebeam/ Arkansas

Dave South GA   October 19th, 2009 9:09 pm ET

I personally applaud the sheriff in his fight against illegal immigrants, and wish there were a lot more like him. You ask about their rights, but what about ours. I would be more than willing to show an officer my credentials to prove my citizenship if our law enforcement were allowed to ask for theirs. I live in South Ga. a transplant from New England. I have been here for fifteen years and have seen it all. From a person leaving a store and dropping his wallet accidentally revealing five driver’s licenses and social security cards to vehicle accidents in which the driver fled the scene of the accident, not to mention what seems like a large population of babies born for the purpose of grounding illegal immigrants to this county. You ask of their rights; if they are here illegally then they have no rights just as a felon in our prisons. They broke the law to get here and used our system against us. I have no problem with people trying to better themselves, but do it the legal way.

mike   October 19th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Retracting your statements, sounds like jumping on the bandwagon Rick, your very spineless and don't use your own ideas, if you had to theft others opinions!

mike   October 19th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Rick, you are pitifull! Here's somebody that is upholding the law, and your concerned with upholding the rights of lawbreakers. I hope nothing bad happens to anybody, from an illegal thatthis sheriff tried to arrest, and your side "feds" decided to release becuase they were arrested illigally. Grow a spine or move to another country.

Bigjim   October 19th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

Another blistering round of liberialism today with a man who is actually doing his job! Sheriff Joe is doing the job that the federal government has not done for last 40yrs and yet he is a racist, perhaps you need to read the laws and check on your fact....illegally crossing the border is against the law of both Arizona and the United States. His job is to enforce the existing laws and asking someone no matter of skin color, age or sex to provide legal documention fo citzenship is Not just grabbing headlines, it is what we need All law enforcement to do and if you cannot provide it, got to jail and you have a limited amount of time to have someone to bring the proof to the courthouse. If a "no" go, send them somewhere but not here in the United States. Sorry, let's make Immigration legal and safe, not another way to sneak in and use our services and don't pay for them.
Jim
ps- Can i use your fridge next week? If not I can just break in and eat all the groceries you bought for your family-you don't mind do you?

Patricia   October 19th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

I commented earlier today after your interview with Sheriff Arpaio but you would not print it, too on the mark about your many short comings.

Rick you are no reporter and should be fired for showing such complete and utter disregard for the truth and fairness. You should go back to your country of origin along with your mama who wants all the perks and privileges of living her but cannot be bothered with learning English. Oh, she does not have to for you do. Do you speak for your mama, too?

The law says before becoming a citizen the applicant must learn to speak and read English. Or, is she too still an illegal alien, which really you are and should leave at once.

You think it is fine for the illegals to break the law yet you have the unmitigated gall to try and quote the law to Arpaio. How does one say chutzpah in Espanol? Because you are quite full of IT and yourself.

Please stop editing the interviews and telling us what we see and hear. We have eyes, ears and a brain and can see, hear and think for ourselves.

If you and the other illegals do not like our laws, go back to Mexico or go back at any rate.

You should be fired by CNN and if they do not, I will not watch CNN and will boycott the products which are advertised therein.

Tony   October 19th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez,
I have a couple of suggestions. 1. Why don't you get out of your plush NY office building and go down to the border and work there for a year or so chasing illegal aliens. You just MIGHT find out how Sheriff Arpaio can recognize an illegal alien when he sees one.

2. Sheriff Arpaio has more federal, state and local law knowledge in his little fingertip than you have in your entire office. So before you get into a "battle of wits" with one of the best lawmen in the U.S., I'd suggest you come armed with some. Your ignorance of the crime wave caused by illegal aliens in Arizona is appalling. Sheriff Arpaio is doing what the Border Patrol and Customs and Immigration should have been doing for the past 30 years.

albert   October 19th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

You need to show some respect for a man doing his job. Stop interupting when you are being given a answer to your questions.

David E. Kelly   October 19th, 2009 11:51 pm ET

Rick,

My rights were violated in Arizona and none of the authorities did anything including Sheriff Joe, Phoenix Police, Chandler Police, FBI the State and County Attorney General, to stop a business identity thief from violating my federal copyright. This criminal made a business card that said he owned my registered photography business and he scanned and printed over 50,000 copies of my copyrighted photo poster "Remembering September 11, 2001".

Its ashamed that no white males with jurisdictional power to stop the illegal distribution of a counterfeit would do anything to stop this guy even after I had went to them for help before the posters were distributed. I was forced into Civil Court and received a judgement by default, but cannot collect because the white attorneys that I used failed to demand proper justice and accounting.

I am a black male and the criminal was black and is still running the streets ripping people off with con games and schemes. Matter in fact, he committed 20-22 state and federal crimes and the authorities do not care because a lot of his crimes are against African Americans.

There is subtle racism here, but as long as they are in denial our rights will continue to be abused.

Rod Hardman   October 20th, 2009 12:59 am ET

Rick. Sheriff, Arpaio is conducting the job he was elected to do and yet our government wants him to back off so more illegals will come here thinking they can do what ever they want. I don't think so. We need more officers like sheriff Joe Arpaio so as an officer my self i back his actions.

David   October 20th, 2009 1:01 am ET

Rick,

It is no different than how the whites used the blacks labor to build this country. Now they are using Hispanic labor to maintain it. Its amazing how all of these people can get on here and support him when they know that he is dead wrong and is a stubborn and obstinate man. The heart condition of Americans is in a very poor condition. Its that simple. Most are a bunch of haters! Where is the love people?

PETE M   October 20th, 2009 1:04 am ET

I happen to live in maricopa county where this bigot has jurisdiction he has stopped me on one occasion and have detained me and my family for about 20 minutes while he checks me and my family out on the computer,His deputy stopped me because he said he could not read my perfectly legible license plate as it is a new tahoe auto,we knew it was the color of our skin that got us pulled over..that's just one incident this sheriff has put fear and intimidation in the hispanic population that it no longer will communicate with local law enforcement..this sheriff needs to go..at age 77 his demeanor and personality is appalling...

Deeram   October 20th, 2009 1:11 am ET

Glad to see someone is doing the job!

Jim C   October 20th, 2009 1:46 am ET

Rick – use your talents for something other than trying to stir up controversy where there is none.. You accuse the Sheriff of carrying out high profile stunts to attract popular attention from "nativists" to get re-elected. You should look in the mirror and realize you are doing the same thing to try and get high "ratings". The bullying and posturing you are doing is nothing short of grandstanding, and it is not how a proper news person should conduct themselves. You are pure Hollywood. Walter Cronkite would roll over in his grave, rest his soul. The world is getting weary of your kind of antics. You might want to pay attention to that.

Sheila Cogley   October 20th, 2009 2:05 am ET

Dear Rick, Sometimes when you hear something that you've never heard before, go by quickly, you can't quite remember what was said. Today in your discussion regarding Maricopa County, AZ (where I live) you said our sheriff sought the limelight and said some things so to keep happy the ?????? who vote for him. I'm a 54 year old homebound lady and perhaps this is a now a common word that has gotten by me. Could you please let me know what the word was because I'm going crazy try to remember it. Thank you very much, Sheila

KC   October 20th, 2009 2:37 am ET

Sorry Gringos!!! :O)

E Harr   October 20th, 2009 2:53 am ET

To Karina;

Please read your history. The US did not "take" AZ NM TX from Mexico. This attitude is really inflammatory, and incites resentment toward you and all those who think like you. Not good PR at all, not the way to convince others to your way of thinking.

Here are the facts: You don't have to worry, because eventually Mexicans will be a majority the United States. Why? Because any country that oppresses its females and discourages them from getting an education will overrun a country that does not, with a sky high birth rate and sheer numbers. It's that simple. Mexican culture has a strong social system of Catholicism and Machismo designed to deny women all reproductive choices, and in the process denies them education and power. Yes, the quinceanara does have a dark side, and is backed up by Catholic dogma. Recent quote from young Latina just before her event "This means I can go out and get pregnant now." You can't have it both ways, send mixed messages like that to young Mexican girls, than act surprized when they get pregnant.
Hard, consistent statistical evidence over many years bears out this cultural tendency toward teen pregnancy and total lack of emphasis on the importance of education, especially for the female half of the population in Mexico. So what does all this mean? Just extrapolate the teen pregnancy high school dropout statistics over the next 50-100 years, and it becomes very obvious that the US is well on the way to reaching economic equilibrium with Central and South America. We are already descending, and past the point of no return I believe. You need not worry, Karina. Yes, Mexico is in the process of" taking back" the United States. but what you don't want to talk about is that in taking it back, not your race but your cultural characteristics will take America down.
I would like to hear your arguments , based on hard educational statistics, that I am wrong and United States economy with a Hispanic majority will surpass or even come close to matching our present economic status.

"Demographics are destiny."- unknown.

Angela   October 20th, 2009 8:08 am ET

Ricky, Ricky, Ricky, I think our country is in a knife fight with illegal aliens about who should be in the United States and who should be LOOKING IN. The Feds are consulting the ACLU and Obama is waiting (what else does he do in critical situations). Your words have weight far beyond what you can imagine and you have pointed your words at the wrong guy in this fight. Sheriff Joe Arpaio may carry a gun but isn't that the guy you want to be with in a knife fight? It's stuff like this that affirms you are on the right network.

Ann   October 20th, 2009 9:09 am ET

The American taxpayer has been subsidizing the government of Mexico for over forty years. We have taken millions of people (one million a year from all over the world more than any other country) from Mexico and countries from latin and south america. We have nothing to apologize for we have been subsidizing their health care and education. It is time Americans said enough. We went from 190 million to 304 million in forty years. Through NAFTA millions of our jobs went south because of the "no duty" on return. Our auto plants have gone, our manufacturing even our farming businesses have moved to Mexico. Even Germany, Italy, Japan make cars in Mexico for the free entry. The problem is Mexico's not ours. They don't educate past the sixth grade, each year dumping their people into the US. There are over 36 visas you can apply for to come over part time, full time, as as student, researcher, visitor, etc. There are reasons people can't come in legally, they have criminal records in their country, criminal records in ours, don't have any skills, can't find a job, don't want to pay taxes on money they would earn. The state of Tennessee says that 6,400 illegals caught in their state caused 20,000 crimes. The american people have had enough. President Kennedy started up the Peace Corps to help other nations. What more does the world want from us. I say this sheriff is doing a job the federal government are afraid to do and when he is finished there we should send him to California. How many there have not contributed to the tax base and yet demand services. No wonder this state is hurting. This country cannot help the 7 billion people on the planet when we ourselves are struggling. Mexico holds $31.5 billion of our debt (you can google the treasury department debt sheet). Why don't they build more schools? Hospitals?? Its easier for them to dump their poor in this country then to deal with them in theirs. Mr. Sanchez your reporting has always been biased. You should go down to the El Paso/Juarez border Monday mornings at 0530 and watch till 9, any of the bridges, especially the downtown bridge. There are so many US children of MX nationlas that they have their own pedestrian lane. These are children whose mothers held border crossing cards and used them to stay with friends, have children in US hospitals, leave without paying and taking their brand new US birth certificate with them. Why not do a story on the county hospital and see for yourself how much American taxpayers have paid for this expense. Get hold of your biases and place them on the back burner look at the problem as a taxpayer, you are getting screwed. Americans are sick and tired of being screwed and we aren't taking it any more Mr. Sanchez. Open your eyes and stop playing the race card , it no longer works.

Lydia Lozano   October 20th, 2009 9:12 am ET

This makes me furious. First, it is an insult to black people who were 1) here legally and 2) exercising their Constitutional rights, by comparing them with illegal non-citizens breaking the law. This is an ill-disguised attempt to change the narrative from the Rule of Law and law enforcement, which Sheriff Joe is upholding, to a supposedly "racial" attack on Hispanics. There is a reason that justice is depicted as blind: no one is above the law. One of the most important reasons our country has been successful, and that people want to come here, is that our society is based on the Rule of Law, which prevailed in the case of Bull Connor. But what Rick Sanchez and the rest are advocating is a setting aside of the Rule of Law for a particular group of people.

Dawn   October 20th, 2009 12:30 pm ET

Arizona has big problems with the drug smuggling, gangs and even rape from those crossing into the us illegally. I say thumbs up for sheriff Joe, we need more like him. I am so worried about whats happening to our country, Mexicans will take over the US, the big question who is going to pay for all there services like welfare, medical and child care, When we all leave to other countrys, because they have distroyed ours, they will have to start paying for all these things themselfs then watch them scatter. the US will be just another mexico that they all want to get out of.

Bill Eldrich   October 20th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

One thing for sure is that ICE has zero authority over Maricopa County Sheriff. They may not appreciate his methods, but they are free to attempt to prosecute him for any civil rights violations. It is not gonna happen because a complete picture (not your out of context worry) of probable cause is used to apprehend an illegal alien. Most of them are by consensual contact and simply asking when and where were you born. No law against that.

Ed. Waller   October 20th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

To all you people who comment on this site about illegal immigration,
please do me a favor and contact your political reps, both Democrat
and Republican and complain about the non enforcement of our
immigration laws. We can stop this invasion by political pressure on the
politicians. Believe me, it works.

Andy Shumate   October 20th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

All hail Sheriff Joe Arpaio! Finally a real American hero..and believe me, America needs a hero!

jt   October 20th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Sheriff Joe has the right idea. I wish all the other sheriffsk, in all the other states would follow suit. We need to protect our country.

gail kelly   October 20th, 2009 3:41 pm ET

Why all of a sudden do we not hear a lot about Iraq and N . Korea? It seems to be more about Latinos not getting a fair deal? Whats up Rick. If they are here legally then there is no problem. I myself am tired of paying for illegials!!! Get back to the subjects that you use to report on...

sandra plinski   October 20th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

I thought a person had to speak english to become a citizen of USA . aRE YOUR PARENTS ILLEGAL? I know they still don't speak english. By the way, Joe doesn't need fed permission to do his job, he has state law, you can't be that stupid

michael   October 20th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

While I agree Joes tactics may be flawed. If they are the feds need to step up.

Seems the basic argument is does Joe have the power to sweep?
Are illegal Immigrants criminal?

Yes to both.

Joe has the job to apprehend criminals
Crossing our borders, without papers, is a criminal act.

The second question is is he using banned tactics?

If he is the Feds need to step up and correct it..

Mary   October 20th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Congratulations Sheriff Joe! Finally a government official who is actually doing his job! Sorry ICE, looks like you've been sleeping on the job while a small town sheriff is enforcing what you had set out to do!

Conrad   October 20th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Rick is it any wonder, people get mad at the media, Sheriff Joe is doing a good job, maybe not just the way you or someone else may like it but he's getting it done, yet you for several days have to keep challenge and question him, the mans' got 25 years experience and you want to talk to him like you know the law and obviously you don't, it's discussing, we get one man doing a good job and this is the way he is treated, wise up. Leave him alone.

John Silvis   October 20th, 2009 4:23 pm ET

Rick

I am going to start a campaign to get your prejudiced a** off of the airways. You are a bigot in the truist sense of the word. You cannot silence other opinions and expect no response. I, unlike your people, will follow the law. But you will be replaced. Then we can have justice for desperately poor people who wait legally. I speak for them.
Adios, supporter of lawbreaking.

Jessica Drinkwine   October 20th, 2009 4:24 pm ET

You know I have read about 100 or so of the posts for this segment and I am astounded at some of the comments. I watched the segment on television yesterday. I do not feel that Rick was unfair to sheriff Joe. He made comments about other peoples comments directed towards sheriff Joe about his tactics. I don't think Mr. Sanchez called for any of the racial slurs or other jargon that is being thrown at him. Go back and review the segment. We as Americans should ALL be above the racist crap I am reading. It is about breaking the law not what color their skin is. Unfortunately it is easier for the Mexicans to cross the borders illegally than any other race.....that is the only reason it is so biased towards one race. In my opinion Joe is doing the job that the government doesn't have the BALLS to do themselves. Thank you Joe and I for one am checking your name on the ballet when you run again!!

Donna Scott   October 20th, 2009 5:22 pm ET

Rick why don't you go find a journalist job on an espanol station. Your to Bias for me to listen to. Thank God I can change the TV Channel. CNN used to be my favorite news channel but not anymore.

GO JOE!!!!

willfightanddielikeaman   October 20th, 2009 7:16 pm ET

After hearing the dreadful job that the sheriff is doing and the constant racial profiling of minorities-mainly Latinos- I would think any Latino who supports the Republicans are supporting the Sheriff and endorsing his behavior.

John Silvis   October 20th, 2009 7:27 pm ET

Anybody out there with me on this?

willfightanddielikeaman   October 20th, 2009 7:30 pm ET

WHAT HAPPEN TO ILLEGAL WHITE FOLKS?

The feds need to arrest Racist SHERIFF Joe smoe and take away that badge.

Latinos should use this as a serious warning to vote against everything Republican. The sheriff represents the republican philosophy when it comes to it's relationship to the Latino community.

I bet Joe has never caught a European illegal alien in his long career.

What happen; illegal Europeans don't exist or Joe is not profiling them?

Joe should not be allowed to arrest anybody except for white folks.

I WOULD PERSONALLY GIVE JOE $20,000 RIGHT NOW IF HE CAN SHOW ME RECORDS OF HIM ARRESTING AND DEPORTING AT LEAST 3 WHITE FOLKS THAT WERE HERE ILLEGALLY.

STACI TRAVIS   October 20th, 2009 7:44 pm ET

I WISH ALL YOU PEOPLE WHO ARE COMMENTING AGAINST JOE ARPAIO WOULD GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT;I LIVE IN ARIZONA AND FULLY SUPPORT HIS ACTIONS WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS;
PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH, THESE ARE NOT ALL INNOCENT PEOPLE HE'S ROUDING UP, SOME ARE CRIMINALS, SOME TAKE AWAY JOBS FROM LOCAL PEOPLE, THEY GET FREE HEALTHCARE, FREE EDUCATION, THEY DONT PAY FOR CAR INSURANCE, AND ALL THESE THINGS WE AS CITIZENS HAVE TO MAKE UP FOR;IF ALL YOU PEOPLE AGAINST ARPAIO WOULD LIKE TO FOOT THE BILL YOURSELVES THEN LET THEM ALL IN AND YOU CAN PAY-ALSO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO ARE MULED OVER HERE AND LOSE THEIR LIVES BEING DUMPED OFF OR HELD IN CAPTIVITY–THERE'S MORE TO IT THAN JUST "ROUNDING" UP PEOPLE;WE'RE ON THE MEXICAN BORDER NOT THE CANADIAN BORDER, IT'S NOT LIKE ANY OTHER NATIONALITY IS COMING ACROSS THE BORDER IN THIS AREA, I WOULD FEEL THE SAME WAY REGARDLESS OF THE NATIONALITY; AND WHAT ABOUT THE HISPANICS WHO DO TRY TO COME OVER LEGALLY THEY ALSO GET SCREWED BY THE ILLEGALS-PLEASE DO YOUR COMPLETE RESEARCH BEFORE COMMENTING

J.R.   October 20th, 2009 9:45 pm ET

Rick,
Has everyone forgotten about 9/11 and protecting our borders? Sheriff Joe has picked up Chinese coming here to AZ from the border. I am tired of people like you that try and make a racist out of Sheriff Joe, because he isn't. But, he is about the law and ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL. I am a Democrat that voted for Obama (not Republican). I have seen the problems experienced here in Arizona firsthand with all those here Illegally. ICE has other priorities and Janet seems to be more concerned with trying to keep certain groups happy, but isn't doing all the things that need to be done to take care of our borders. I can't believe the number of illegals that have been picked up in drop houses, etc. Obviously, what is being done at the border isn't working...they are still coming in droves. You really shouldn't be picking on Sheriff Joe, but handling a news story about just "How Protected is the US since 9/11". What has ICE done lately?? By the way, I like your show, but i am very disappointed on your very bias view regarding this subject. We all should support Sheriff Joe! Maybe this will tell the Politicians that enough is enough of them doing nothing regarding this major problem.

John Silvis   October 21st, 2009 1:55 am ET

Willfightandielikea man
You are a racisit...period. The guys in white suits and pointy hats got to take a back seat to you in spewing race hate. Your name makes me think you are probably violent and irrationally dangerous. Please seek professional help. Really man, your going to hurt somebody and end up in jail. Your antiwhite hate speech is typical but all racism is inexcusable. Get help with your irrational behavior before it is too late...really.

John Silvis   October 21st, 2009 2:09 am ET

What the hell race do you think people from Mexico and Central America are folk? The whitest man I've ever seen was from Mexico City. Really. Now llisten carefully. Hispanic is not a race. Got it! It's just a phoney title some highly self serving people came up with to use against "white" people. If you think Rick isn't "white" you must be blind or insane. Say why can't people from Spain be called Hispanic?
Tell you why...people from Europe aren't allow to plan the race game.
That tells you a lot about what is going on. In fact, get this, by far the biggest racists I have met were black people. Really. There's no excuse for racists. Who said this quote, "We must put race at the center everyone's life." It's the basis of "liberal" , whatever that is,
morality. Adolf Hitler said that but it's the liberals and racial minorities, who were always the majority of people in the world, who live by Hitler's words. All you see is skin colar and spanish language. You don't see anything else. That's the center of your world. Change to only German language counts, instead of Spanish, and you can say seig heil and really live the part. Racism knows no color.

Patricia   October 21st, 2009 11:55 am ET

Well said, J.R., I could not agree more. And, I agree with the person who urged we all call our senators, congress and executive branch leaders. They mostly seem very hard-headed on this issue so we must use plain and strong language to make it perfectly clear that we are incensed, angry and will not tolerate any more excuses for this invasion.
Forget about the traitor and lightweight, Sanchez. He shows his true color each time he opens his mouth, he is a nobody! Flood capitol hill with phone calls, faxes, emails and old fashioned letters. Go in person if you can but do whatever it takes to get our messages across, that is, that we have had more than enough of this treason, hypocrisy, incompetence and foot-dragging. If you agree, put it into action, now, before it is too late.

Thanks,

Pat

If it is illegal to give an criminal alien aid, then doesn't the U.S. govt. cause us to violate the law by not enforcing it?

I like you when you don't scream! Please that to Fox.

Sunshine   October 21st, 2009 8:42 pm ET

Sheriff Joe is the best. First, we don't need immigration reform. Kennedy passed a bill during Reagan's administration. He said giving amnesty would never happen again, but this stupid government never enforced the law. But, Sheriff Joe is and rightly so.

If I enter another country illegally, I am tossed in jail. Our priority should be secure the borders and ports and prevent anyone coming here illegally. This business of not offending Calderon is rediculous and I am sick and tired of hearing about Latinos in America. People here legally whether Latino, Polish, whatever I support. They are equal to me, but Anyone here illegally I say, Sheriff Joe, round them up and deport them.

All I can say about this government is that they are cowards. They don't even enforce the laws they pass and don't even know what's on the books that they have passed.

People wake up and stopping voting in these idiots. Vote in people like Sheriff Joe who follows the law and protects the State of Arizona.

As for Janet Napolitano. She caused Arizona into bankruptcy. How she got appointed to HS is beyond me. She is another government employee without any brains.

Patricia   October 21st, 2009 11:27 pm ET

Yes, Kenneth, that is so!

Jason B.   October 22nd, 2009 12:34 am ET

Leave Sheriff Joe alone. He's doing a great job. Who cares if a few rules get bent stopping the illegals. The way I see it, they're breaking laws by being here, why can't we break a few laws to send them back. They're not U.S. citizens, so why should "OUR" constitution protect them.

Wallstreet Bonuses:
In the spirit of capitalism,,,,,,,,by all means, we should allow for bonuses to be paid to the Wallstreet execs in an equitable manner. They should be paid bonuses based on performance in the amount of $1.00 !... :)

starleo14672   October 22nd, 2009 3:32 pm ET

I praise this sheriff, It is obvious to me ICE did not do there job or we would not be dealing with 12million illegals in this country. Every state needs to pick it up. I have no fault with the Spanish but they need to enter this country the legal way. I have heard they do the jobs Americans won't do believe me if they paid the giving wage Americans would do the job. It is all about getting it done the cheap way not fair to these workers either, they are being used. Americans want business to change and stop leaving the country for cheap labor, like China, and paying illegals cheap labor.

John M   October 22nd, 2009 5:24 pm ET

Hey Rick,
Check out this news story from KPHO5 in phoenix(link below) and see what the sheriff has said lately about how to tell if someone is in this country illegally, along with his director of jails,(jerry sheridan) he tells you the way to tell if someone is not from this country. I do not know if this guy knows that France is in Europe.

russell mattingly   October 24th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

hey rick do you every think that i.c.e. will get it the amer. people are feed up with illegal immigration. what they dont like about sherriff joe is that he proves you can lock up illegals and send them back.
joe is not shaming amer. he is shaming fed. law enforcement by doing their job. he is doing the work we pay fed. employees to do.
the shame is that our borders are still wide open. who will the open border groups blame when a bomb explodes by a terrorist who crossed our southern border.
if we could fire fed. employees for not doing their jobs maybe things would change. that is a big part of the problem. they know the can do things half way and get by with it.
hopefully amer. is finally waking up and seeing the cost of illegals to the country. cheap labor and free tradeare killing this country. globalizion is nothing more than a code word for cheap labor open borders and free trade.
we make it cheap or there and get rich selling over here!!!!!!

Yes; much like you find Angels with God is the way you find me among the down trodden, and as much as Demons serve the Devil you speak against the down trodden and less fortunate.

I am always on the side of the under dog, and I'm always against anybody who destroy or advocate the destruction of lives based on petty biases.

This world does not belong to any one person, group or race, and, unlike you, I believe in the goodness of mankind, and I also believe it the obligation of human beings with good conscience to stand against people like you who try to deprive others of opportunities simply because they are non-white.

As Long as you and people like you exist then I and people like me will naturally continue to exist, logically.

Now, let’s deal with the issue at hand; name 3 white people that were arrested for being here illegally by Sheriff Joe Some? Your lack of an answer to this question will be revealing in itself. Joe needs to stop abusing his authority because no matter what is done he will not stop the Latino population growth in the good ole US of A.

Hispanics breed, breed, breed, breed! Yeah!
(This notion horrifies you and your ilk, and it makes me feel good)

Patricia   October 24th, 2009 8:15 pm ET

Everyone is entitled to one's own opinion, but, not to one's own facts. Fact is that is against the law to come here legally. Fact is the law says they are to be rounded up and deported. Fact is that aiding and abetting illegals is a crime. Fact, Joe is following law and doing his job. Homeland security nor anyone else has the authority to change the laws. Only an act of congress can do that, and that has not happened. All of you pusillanimous, whining, folks who feel sorry for the illegals and think they should be allowed to stay are wrong and criminal yourselves, traitors and do not belong here, leave immediately.

Sunshine   October 26th, 2009 11:18 am ET

Crimes committed in this State of Arizona for the most part are caused by illegals here. To say it is discrimination against the Mexicans is rediculous. Murders, rapists, child abduction, ID theft, etc., have been caused by illegals in this State no matter the race. Hwever, most, if not all, have been caused by illegal Mexicans. So to say we are discriminating against Mexicans is nothing more than a cop out for you so-called do gooders.

Sheriff Joe does his job. This irritates Janet Napolitano because it takes away from her. And, this Government knows full well there are laws on the books already and we don't need now new immigration laws. Schumer, et al., is on the s list as stated by my frieds in his State. Come election time, it will be very interesting.

Patricia   October 26th, 2009 11:33 am ET

Hey, wannabeaman, you are here illegally, aren't you? So defensive, it is apparent. Also, so you claim to be for the underdog? Well, there are plenty in Mexico, so why are you not there helping them? We have plenty of underdogs here, that is the point. Taxes are levied here to support the legal citizens who need social services and support. Their numbers are growing, thanks to the illegals pouring over the border. Many of us deeply resent this and are sick of this illegal traffic into our country.
You keep asking us to name three whites Joe has arrested. That is a very stupid question and you know it. Do we know the names of anyone who has been arrested? No we do not. That is a totally irrelevant question and a red herring. Go home, worriedaboutyourmanhood, and take all the other illegals with you

J.R.   October 26th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

This issue is not about the skin color (as an Arizona native I am darker than most hispanics), this issue is about the Security of our Country. Just last week the authorities picked up 2 illegals making FAKE Arizona Driver's Licenses and Social Security cards. How much drain on our social services do you think this country can take? We are already drained of money. The people that are U.S. Citizens that have worked hard all their lives and obeyed our laws deserve these services. It is really time for those that try and pick on Sheriff Joe to realize this issue. People are tired of our laws being broken and our POLITICIANS, SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS, AND OTHER's IGNORING THE PROBLEM AND NOT DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. People in Arizona of all skin color who are US CITIZENS want OUR COUNTRY back and the Laws obeyed for ALL OUR safety and security.

Hey , why we don't send Sheriff Joe Arpaio to Afganhistan, Pakistan or anywhere else in the Middle East... may be he can catch Osama Bin Laden by himself.... if he is so good with the illegal hispanic immigrants
What do you think the terrorist will do with him? It's being 8 years and the US is not able to catch the "bad guy" We have to hire Arpaio to do the job.. don't you think ? illegals hispanics are not the problem. Because the white people are not able to catch terrorists then they are messing with illegal hispanic to feel better about their incompetence . ja ja ja

Salvador Vitanza   October 26th, 2009 3:08 pm ET

I have always liked you Ricardo Leon Sanchez, but your position about changing your name because the US culture is not Hispanic shows you as a sell out. My name is Salvador and I always say "NO!!" when someone asks me: "Can I call you Sal?". Spanish has been spoken in New Mexico long before the first anglo arrived there. Did you know? Same goes for California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, part of Wyoming, western Colorado, Florida, etc.

IT'S FUNNY HOW IF THIS COUNTRY WAS NEVER TAKEN AWAY FROM MEXICANS IN THE FIRST PLACE, EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU WOULD BE ILLEGAL AND TRYING TO COME HERE FOR A BETTER LIFE. I CALL IT HYPOCRICY!

This statement holds no water. If USA never bought or took, depending on your opinion of history, part of Mexico that is now the western southern states. It would still be part of Mexico. It would not be the country so many Mexicans are trying to get into. It would be the country they are leaving. No matter where that boarder lies it doesn’t change a thing. The great US of A is were most people of the world what to live and we just can’t accommodate them all. The United States is great but we're not God. This is why there are laws and limits. Isn’t that why all countries have immigration laws? The part of the USA you believe was taken from Mexico would not have prospered under Mexican rule as it has as a part of USA. It is Americans who have made it what it is. Let me put it like this. If you sold me a run down house and I took it and made a mansion of it. Would you really expect me to let you live there rent free? NO! It was my blood, sweat, and tears that made it what it is today and I be damned if I’m going to give it away. Nor would I take in a room mate that will not pay their fair share of rent, or ask to give them the best room in the house cause they are bilingual, or be asked to learn their language while in my house. All I’m saying is respect Americans and their laws. What America is today did not come cheap. My father in law went to war with three brothers and came home alone. My husband is a Vietnam vet. I’m tired of hearing of reform so we can give those here a legal path way to citizenship. There is already a legal pathway. They just refuse to take it.

E. Harr said it better

E Harr   October 27th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

I still see no response from supporters of illegal immigration/detractors of Sheriff Arpaio as to the core reason Americans want their borders protected from Mexico.
We don't care what color your skin is, but we have every right to expect you to pull your weight as taxpayers. Willfight says "breed, breed, breed" to Hispanics. I've heard that almost gleeful chant before.

But please tell me I am wrong, give me your rationale for the benefits of a Hispanic majority here in the US. Look at your educational and teen pregnancy rates, then tell me where a Hispanic majority is going to take this country.
It's too bad no female Hispanic leaders have had ther courage to stand up to the deeply entrenched Machismo/Catholic mores that have resulted in oppression of women in Mexico. You can never have an advanced economy/society if your oppessing half your population by impregnating them as soon as possible, thereby torpedoing their education. The Taliban does this openly; Mexican culture does it much more quietly and indirectly, but almost as effectively. This was well illustrated in "Latino in America."
Continue bringing this culture into the United States, refuse to assimilate, learn the language, or promote education as a core value, and reproduce irresponsibly and yes, you will achieve a majority , but you will also drag America down economically and we will descend from world power status closer to third world status. It's that simple.

Why won't any of you talk about that?

If Eva Longoria Parker et al want to be leaders in the Hispanic community, they should start by discouraging quinceanaras and encouraging education and college instead.

I am fortunate to be granted open communication with heavenly Divine God personally. He gave me this blessing. He first spoke to me to me Early spring 2009 when He woke me up at 2 am after the dialyses said that I have kidney problem. My wife and I cried at the doctors office. God Said “I know you. You are Troy Lee Thomas, Idabel. Your wife is Laura Mae Sanders and her mother is Lula Mae Sanders and I know her sisters and brothers.” God began to name them all. Then at that time I knew who he was. Since then, we have talked a lot. He told me the truth about his son Jesus and him. I am happy for that. At that time my kidney reading was 3.1 and that night at 2am . He said “ I am going to heal you right now”. he brought my kidney reading down to .23 instantly. I have proof to show it.
I can talk to people in Heaven. I have talk with Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, Mlk, and my early parents and relatives. What a privelege !!

Way to go sheriff Joe. Its a nasty job but someone has to do it. The problem is you're the ONLY one doing it. Don't be shocked that Washington is upset, i mean damn... you weren't really suppose the enforce the law. Our immigration laws were a mistake meant to be over-looked, not meant to be enforced. You should put a welcome sign up inviting all illegals into our country like our Gov't has. Sorry Joe but you can't expect any praise for a job well done when the laws are made by the biggest crooks in the country. After Washington has you removed, please come to New Hanover county in N.C. We should have more Like this Sheriff – he upholds the law – I came to AmericaLEGALLY – Why should we allow criminals, drug dealers, etc.. to illegally come into this country, he's not after legal immigrants, he;s after the ILLEGAL ones..and the mexicans that came here legally for a better life should be happy to have a safe place to live.. if they don't like it here, go back to Mexico where your kids can get shot in the street anytime.

As for the Hotel owner in New mexico, I agree with him that while antone he hires should speal english while in the presence of the public. i resent it when foreign employees speaks anything other than english to me. This is AMERICA, the ENGLISH language should be first, Outside of your employement place, I don't care if you speak swahili. This P C if going to far.. only to get votes, give me a break...

This doesn't mean we don't respect the mexican culture in new Mexico... I think its grand, I love mariachi bands, the people, etc.. but if you insist on not wanting to speak my language, then I should pay you in pesos equivalent to what you would earn in Mexico..

Patricia   October 30th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

Ooooooh, Josie, love your comments and agree with all you say. Makes total sense to me. We lived in Italy for four years and did not expect the citizens of Italy to speak English but rather, we learned their language. We did not consider it a chore or hardship but a rich and rewarding learning experience as part of learning as much as possible of their wonderful culture, history and heritage. To this day, our children recall our time there with fondness and we all remember some Italian, though we did not learn to speak it fluently. However, had we stayed would have made every effort to become fluent in tongue of permanent country of residence.

mel   November 2nd, 2009 2:05 pm ET

joe arpaio is a xenophobic bigot, and so are most of the people who left comments on this page. if all of his brainwashed followers could get off of their lazy butts and actually do some research on the whole immigration issue then maybe they wouldn't seem like such uneducated racists.
1. illegal immigrants are not coming here to steal your jobs and deprive you of your "great" benefits, they are coming here because they have NO choice. globalization is driving them here. the u.s. is exploiting them and they are starving , any human being would migrate to feed their family ,it's nature. if anything ,they are helping stimulate our economy by being consumers . yes, they buy food and pay rent, and some also pay taxes .
2. Justifying joe arapio's violations on illegal immigrants human rights is justifying a violation on your own human rights. the patriot act pretty much took your rights to privacy and speedy trials. so your human rights should be that much more important . torture is no laughing matter. and maybe it's too hard to understand that what is being done to illegal immigrants in terms of making them scape goats and mistreating them to the point of torture in some instances can easily happen to any one here illegal or not and justifying it based on racist ideologies will only make human rights violations more prevalent . YOUR human rights included.
3.rick sanchez is doing his job, and it takes courage to cover both sides of an argument especially with an online audience that seems to be so closed minded .it's not his fault that joe arapio is a racist lunatic with too much power and ego and it just happened to shine through in the interview.

Patricia   November 2nd, 2009 4:52 pm ET

mel. your arguments are so full of holes you could use them for a sieve! Do YOUR research! Why not hold Mexico and other Latin American countries responsible for violating rights of their own citizens? The U.S., nor any sovereign nation is obligated to accept just anyone who wants to come in and you know it! We have immigration laws which, BTW, are far more generous than any nation on earth. How dare you accuse us of violating human rights when they, and you, are blatantly and wantonly violating our laws?

If we WERE xenophobic, as you so wildly assert, we would do our utmost to keep ALL foreigners out and you see none of us, especially Lou Dobbs nor Joe Arpaio suggesting nor attempting this, so you are a race baiter, and mendacious to boot!

mel   November 2nd, 2009 7:05 pm ET

Dearest patricia, I'm not going to write a detailed essay on my arguments while on a commenting online. Come on now ....But my arguments are not mendacious tales. Globalization IS happening, and human rights ARE being violated. human rights are not being violated in deporting illegal immigrants, but in the treatment and procedures that are being utilized to enforce this task. I'm surprised you haven't heard of these incidents ,you do seem like the kind of person that's eager to believe everything you see on television and obviously you support joe arpaio so you must be keeping up with what he is doing and how he goes about it . And yes Patricia , those countries should be held accountable for their human rights violations as well, i did not state otherwise. But so should this country. Its funny you are so eager to assume things, it makes it hard to want to reply to your crazy ramblings but i am curious...so... why exactly am I a criminal? Is it because i have an opinion that differs from yours? or is it one of your incongruous assumptions ? Also If you took the xenophobe statement personally then maybe you should reconsider that you are not one. After all you didn't deny being a bigot.

Patricia   November 3rd, 2009 1:33 am ET

Mel, I do not have to justify my rights as a U.S. citizen to expect our laws and constitution to be enforced. This was not an argument re global human rights violations but expressly regarding our rights to have our immigration and other laws obeyed. No, Mel, I am not a bigot but it sure sounds like you are and Sanchez definitely, cuts both ways you know.

Are you a criminal? Did I call you one? Says in U.S. law that any person aiding and abetting illegal entry and giving them aid and support while here, are breaking the law. Sounds like it defines you and Rick!

I am not an apologist for the behavior of Bush, Cheney, et al, so let us not waste time by going there. Nor for any companies, corporations, groups, etc. IF the citizens of Mexico and other countries are being exploited within their own nations, isn't that the fault of their own governments who are complicit in their exploitation? I know it is prevalent and chic to try to blame Uncle Sap for everything but this will just not wash. Do not try to guilt-trip me with oh, how bad the U.S. is. If the U.S. is so bad, how come so many want to come here?

Yes, the illegals are being exploited by those who hire them and pay them less, but, they allow it themselves and I am not a part of that.

You said ALL countries should be held accountable for their own human rights violations and we agree on that. However, if your idea of holding the U.S. accountable is by allowing illegals in with free rein, then you are dead wrong. This action only punishes us, the citizens, for crimes not committed by us, but by the executive branch in power at that time.

You assume so much about me yet knoweth not! Do you actually think I only get information from TV or internet blogs? Show me where and how Joe Arpaio has mistreated anyone and violated their human rights? I am sure IF he had, then La Raza (the race, now that sure sounds racist to me), MALDEF, ACLU, Ch. of commerce, SPLC, and those other special interest, socioethnocentric groups would go after him. Are you a member of these orgs?

You yourself stated that Arpaio is xenophobic and bigoted and so are most who left comments on this page. I left comments and am answering your charges.

BTW, no one twisted your arm to force you to respond to "my crazy ramblings" as you so delicately put it. Mel, I think your ramblings are pretty crazy, too, so guess we are even!

Oh, and one more thing. Sounds like you are so eager to believe whatever Rick Sanchez has to say regarding this subject. Of course he is so fair, unbiased and NOT a bigot himself. I have heard him boast of his parents bringing him here as a child, illegally, so he is one of them Of course he would defend them, now would he not. How about you, mel, are you one of them?

Tony Fernandez   November 3rd, 2009 5:22 pm ET

to Jason B> Are you American citizen? your family is, I don't think so, the real Americans are the American Indians I don't think you are an Indian or not? so this "sheriff" is an illegal from his family and also I think the last name look like Hispanic, what do you think?
Tony

Tony Fernandez   November 3rd, 2009 5:53 pm ET

Question? Arpalo is a Hispanic last name? somebody??
Maybe he was deported from Mexico...
Tony

Patricia   November 7th, 2009 2:55 am ET

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is of Italian descent. His parents came here, legally. You can goodle his name and get his bio.

Several days ago I wrote a more lengthy answer to Tony;s question, but it was not published. Maybe this will not be either, such a waste of time!

Tony Fernandez   November 7th, 2009 11:30 am ET

Patricia you are an American Indian? are you coming legally? you born here? the only way you are legally is if you born in this country, otherwise you enter legally when you visit this country and you stay after your visa expire, that happen probably with "Arpalo" his parents probably were Illegal in this country.
I know you have the right not answers this questions, I know you think the Mexican or Hispanic coming to this country are criminals? I am a professional and Business man and I am Hispanic, and I always I work legally and I have High profile (maybe better of 70% Anglos like you ... in this country), always I had top positions in different corporations and I deal always with person like you, but the different is I always I am the boss and they can't argue with me, I have one big company in United States (and more of 34 branches) and I deal with illegal Hispanic everyday, I talk to their family I have a course in my company to learn English, to get legal papers I help many Hispanic to be, legal because they coming to this country to "work" and support their families in Mexico or another Hispanic countries.
I saw also Illegal from Canada, Germany, Italians a lot as "Arpalo"
why this "Arpalo" probably he is an ignorant , and maybe his family are from criminal from New York or Cosa Nostra member, nobody knows, you know? please research again....do your racist homework

Tony Fernandez   November 7th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Rick I think you are doing a great job, I saw you everyday, keep doing and clarify our ignorant minds, sometimes people believe Immigrants are criminals, but is not, maybe they don't know North Manhattan, they don't know Inglewood In CA, they don't know Chinatown and Korea Town in LA, Armenian Gang in CA.
Or Anglo gan, they are criminals
They hate Mexican and assume every Latin person is Mexican and illegal
They don't recognize professional and high profile latino in America, they don't remember when the Italians coming to America illegal, thousands and thousands, I hope "Arpalo" or his parents remember that...

Patricia   November 7th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Tony, I took the time to answer your accusation regarding Mr. Arpaio's legal status. You made false charges against him without even bothering to do your research. So many of you are here illegally, you have the nerve to charge others with smears and lies.
FYI, my Native American ancestors were here to greet my European ancestors. Thank you but I need no immigration nor other history from the likes of you, making it up as you go along. Not sure of some of what you are trying to say for your grasp of the English language is abysmal..

Frankly, Tony, it does not matter if you are a professional business man, if that is what you said. If here illegally, you are a criminal, as are ALL those here illegally, wherever they are from.

Maybe this, maybe that does not cut it. Arpaio should sue for libel and character assassination of him and his family on this forum. You can be traced you know.

No matter what you think, the law is clear; if not here through legal channels, you are a criminal. And, you, Rick and any others who condone the breaking of our laws are traitors and ingrates. Now, be a good little fellow and go back to Mexico and petition your own government for change and improvement.

J.R.   November 8th, 2009 8:34 pm ET

Patricia,
I agree with you on several levels. There are a lot of good Hispanics that have tried to come here illegally, but since this blog is about Sheriff Joe I have to say I support what he is doing. Unfortunately, the coyotes that bring them here have tried to blackmail and treat them wrong. Thanks to Sheriff Joe he has been able to help free those held captive. As to those posts that reference we are are illegal immigrants I would like to note that this is a new ERA, one of which we have to protect the values of the USA and protect our citizens from Terrorists. Not only our borders but from within. We all, no matter what nationality, need to give a little to protect our way of life that certain individuals would like to take away. Personally, I love the Mexican culture, food and people...
We all shouldn't be too touchy when it comes to civil rights. Personally, I don't might giving a little if it protects my FAMILY, FRIENDS and COWORKERS including my Hispanic friends (and family).

Patricia I really sorry about your ignorance comments, your hate is worse of your friend Joe, I don't know why? is sad to see how many Anglo ignorant support this "Sheriff", you don't scare me, you has to be scare because be racist is a a felony in this country, and I have I can express my opinions anytime is an constitutional rights .
You call me" you are a criminal," I can sue you for this accusations very easy for me, but really I don't need to wasting my time with "people like you" ignorant and fanatic.

Rick, we make our own rules in Arizona. We don't have a constitution, we are a wacko republican state!

Patricia   November 10th, 2009 1:35 am ET

Well said, J.R., thank you for your reasonable and articulate comments. It never ceases to amaze me that those like Tony enter our country sans permission thus committing an illegal act and have the temerity to decry those laws as being racist and unfair. All the while pointing the finger at the good sheriff for working so hard to preserve and defend the laws.

One thing is patently obvious, they have an overabundance of unmitigated gall and an total lack of manners, humility and intelligence.

The recent tragedy at Ft. Hood could have been avoided if Hasan's superiors had been more concerned with the safety and well-being of the troops rather than being politically correct. There were ample blatant warning signs which a lay person could easily observe, let alone his fellow psychiatrists and superior officers.

This nation is in deep trouble and we must hold the pols feet to the fire and force them to do their damned jobs, or fire them. But, since so many are weak, cowardly and pusillanimous, it may be left up to us to act to save our country.

Patricia   November 10th, 2009 1:40 am ET

Tony, you have no leg to stand on, you have no argument because the law is on the sheriff's side, my side and not on yours. All you are able to do is resort to ineffectual name calling.

Tony, you cannot explain our laws to us, you cannot change them to suit yourself, so go back to Mexico, or hell, whichever comes first.

I saw what that sheriff deputy do on your show and I think he should be fired and prosecuted for tampering with the attorney's files that I think is a crime that should be tried. Not handled with the complete disregard of the laws of this land the sheriff shouldn't have a job to if he allows his deputies to do this act of crimes in front of witnesses no less. This Arpaio guy thinks he is above the law then he should fired no law enforcement officer should be above the laws that are written!!!!
