Earlier this week we provided quotes attributed to Rush Limbaugh to illustrate why some people and players felt that Limbaugh was too divisive to be an NFL owner.

One of these quotes, which was in a column in the St. Louis Post Dispatch and in a book largely about conservatives, was refuted by Limbaugh. We have been unable to independently confirm that quote.

We should not have reported it and for that, I apologize. I feel it is important to hold folks accountable when they make mistakes, and that should include myself and my team.

Ricky,

Glad to see that you have some credibility left as a journalist re:the erroneous stating of opinions related to Mr. Limbaufgh. unlike you, Rush isw NOT a journalist/reporter, rather he is a radio personality with a tlk show where he shares his AND others opinions. He is in no way shape or form a white racist, as you so incorrectly stated re: his caricatures of Obama and QB Donovan. He passes along his opinion on whether a Negro in NFL sports is smart enough to lead a team. That's all. If people agree so be it, and if they don't they'll turn him off.

As his ratings sky rocket it appears that a majority of America sees some merit in his comments. QB Donovan has indeed led the Eagles to many NFL wins so he has done his part to combat the "stereotype. Nothing more nor les.

It is totally imprudent for a so called unbaised journalist that you are to state Limbaugh is a racist abnd sholdn't be allowed to own a NFL team. Shame on you and the other liberal biased newscasters who can't see that he has every right to own a NFL team and no one should care as he is simply chasing the good ol fiscally conservative American dream that over 75% of this country believe in and want to do.

I hear that the NFL stands for "Not for Liberals" and it may be partly true as the whining liberal minority in America needs to leave this fine country before they destroy it.

So, clean up your act and start reporting news w/o any opinion as that is what a journalist does. Leave the opinions for talk show/radio hosts....OK?

Willy

The Flying Balloon Fish Story

Like the rest of the world this story had my heart in a ringer. A six year old boy, inside an accidently launched balloon that is flying out of control. After watching this event unfold for over two hours something did not feel right. There were too many unanswered questions. Was this a tragic accident or a publicity stunt?

When the father held the news conference, he completely contradicted the original story told by to the two brothers. The brothers (Main Pranksters) said, they saw Falcon (The six year old) get into the aircraft and accidently launched it. And just like this story it took off out of control.

The Father (The Opportunist) said at the news conference, that the reason Falcon was hiding, was because earlier that day he and the boys were working on the airship. Falcon climb inside the utility box that was connected to the balloon and he yelled at Falcon. Falcon when up to the room above the garage, where he stayed during this whole ordeal. The father also said, the family watched the video of the launch to see if Falcon got into the aircraft.

1- This means that Falcon was no where around when the balloon was launched. So, Falcon could not have been seen getting into the balloon or accidently launching it.

2- This means that not only was this a planned launch, it was video taped. So, who video taped and who launch the balloon. Plus, this was a planned event with the whole family there, so, they would have known that Falcon was not with them.

3- The father built the airship and knew that the utility box, which was connected to the balloon, was the only place that Falcon could have been hiding. Once the father saw the first news video of the balloon flying without the utility box connected, he knew at that point Falcon was not on that balloon. However, he let this event play-out to the full extent, receiving all the attention and free publicity coming his and the family’s way.

Now, with the family making the rounds on all the talk shows, the more they say the more it seems like they pulled a fast one on all of us.

next time check your sources before reporting on a lie... you cost Rush the possibility of him being part owner in an NFL team. Rush NEVER said such things

Jean   October 16th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

I know this is off topic..... it has been bothering me for a long time so I thought I would let off steam here... so many people are up in arms about Immigration Reform.. yet they fail to realize that the Latino
people were here in North America long before the European races were. The Latino people have a much longer standing claim. I just can't understand the logic of the *so-called* reformers

John   October 16th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

What quote? You should have the courage to state the quote and make a retraction at least as meaningful as the false defamation in which you have engaged. By the way, read the 1st amendment. It is not your prerogative to determine if ANY American's comments are unforgivably divisive.

francisca madariaga   October 16th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

In regards to Rush Limbaugh, apologize in person, coward!

Rick,
While I understand the interest in the drug war in Colombia, I truly hope that CNN does a piece on the positive aspects of Colombia and its people- the artists, the music, the culture, the innovators in many fields that are working hard to move the country forward despite the unfortunate circumstances. CNN can also explore the contribution of Colombians in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Un Colombiano Orgulloso,

Donald in CA   October 16th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Why is Rush getting all this sympathy. The same thing was done with Don Imus. Wanda Sykes(who is a comedian) made a simple joke at the correspondent dinner and even some from the left howled along with the right. Even the media seem to be afraid of Rush. You should be more concerned about the rise in McCarthyism from right wing radio.

PoliticoMike   October 16th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

FOX News Would never say sorry!! Good on you, Rick!
-Mike
P.S. Will the media and politicians stop being little chickens when it come to Rush, seriously!

Rob   October 16th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Thank you Rick it takes a man to stand up when he`s wrong! While I`ve never been a fan of Rush Limbaugh, he has been wrongfully labeled a racist for comments about Donavon McNabb but I really suspect because Rush is a white guy he`s not getting a fair shake. I see far too many white men being wrongfully accused of being racist simply for telling the truth and being white. Some people want to be that all races are created equally and in social aspects they should be but all races have something unique about them that comes from being a certain race and this doesn`t mean one race is better than another. For example it is a given in American society that white guys cant jump, well they can but as a race are not better jumpers than blacks. Now white people have taken this for what it is but when the situation is reversed then its racist. We all must be treated equally no matter of any shortcomings one may have. By the way did you catch late nights CSI show, it touched on this very subject, it would be a good show for your viewers to watch.

Sheriff Joe is the only one in this country that has the guts to enforce the law. Your Federal guest made it clear the Feds aren't interested in enforcing the law to keep our country free of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

John Duncklee   October 16th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County Arizona should be banned from any law enforcement agency, and certainly from the entire Southwest. His totalitarian policies are unAmerican and dehumanizing. He has no respect for people unless they agree with him.

CubanMom   October 16th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

It is interesting how quick Limbaugh is to point out when HE is misquoted! However, it is okay for him to LIE each day on his show about our president!

Limbaugh is a hater, plain a simple. To make a living by spewing hate, lies, fear and division is downright evil.

What goes around, comes around.

CubanMom   October 16th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

PS. about the "boy in the balloon story" ....... something "smelled" from the beginning.

Unfortunately, CNN and the rest of the networks covered this story because it was sensational. After the initial report, I turned off the TV.

Perhaps the cops, rescue people and media were fooled, but there is something very fishy about this story!

Daisy21   October 16th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Is Sheriff Arpaio arresting anyone who has not committed a crime? If he stops a car for an offense, and there is an illegal in that car, that illegal has committed crime. Simply by being here, that person has broken the law. The sheriff has every right to take the law breaker into custody. Unfortunately, too many law enforcement officers look the other way when it comes to illegals. I don't think the sheriff is stopping people randomly on the street and arresting them. It's time to stop these sanctuary cities and arrest those who have broken the law, no matter what the law is.

The flying balloon story........

C'on.................When I came into the room to listen to this story, I saw the balloon flying and my first response was.....there is NO child in that balloon, this whole thing was a hoax and the fammily is all in on it!
I don't think we the taxpayers should pay for this, the family should.
What if there had been a "REAL" emergency during this time?

cindy h   October 16th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

I saw an invest in macedonia commercial on fox. it offers 650k for construction, $542 average worker salary a month, tax breaks, etc. doesn't fox know we are in a recession? they ran a commercial to move more comapnies overseas? what the hay?

Sandra Cianciolo   October 16th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Re you intereview with the sheriff of Mariposa County, you obviously believe he is doing the wrong thing. I would have liked to know from ICE exactly how he is abusing his power which seems to be clouded in bureaucratic jargon. Almost all of us are decendents of immigrants-the only difference is they were admitted according to the rules of our country-not by their own rules. There are still many people around the world who could contribute greatly to this country and are still waiting to be admitted. Unfortunately, they live across the sea and cannot creep under or jump over a fence-this proximity to our borders does not make them more deserving and the last I heard was an illegal act which means they BROKE THE LAW OF OUR LAND.

gord eckstein   October 16th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

re: balloon boy thang,

why was the balloon shaped like a flying saucer? was that the real hoax
that was going to be perpetrated, and unintentionally foiled by this child.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is one of the few people in this country willing to do his job !! The feds are a joke....... it's all about politics & money !!
Koodoo's to Sheriff Joe Arpaio :)

Dave Meyer   October 16th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

I've been following the boy in the balloon story, and I cannot believe that people do not find it completely obvious that this size of helium balloon could not come any where close to lifting a six year old boy! Especially the father, who, I believe, claims to be an aeronautical engineer. I'd have serious questions regarding his knowledge of the physics of gases and how he could have believed that his son could have weighed more than a container of air not much larger than a large SUV.

Lacy Lady   October 16th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

I don't know why everyone is so upset because Rush didn't get the football team . He should be in jail on drug charges. He is nothing but a big blabber mouth , that sent his maid out to buy his drugs.
Anyone else, would be in jail.

As for the little boy and the balloon-and I do mean little boy-Wolf Blitzer should be ashamed of him self trying to trap this family into making more out of this story than what really happened. I guess Wolf doesn't realize that little kids say what ever pops in their little heads. They are creative. My children, when very young, built a "rocket" in a tree and said they were going to the moon. They had a list of "supplies" they would take with them.
It was right that the father called the FAA and 911. This balloon was a danger to aircraft no matter what.

Katherine Lawrence   October 16th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

If all states would follow more of Sheriff Joe's rules our cities and states wouldn't be drowning in debt for housing prisioners. How many criminals treated their victims in an "American and humane way"? Criminals get healthcare and dental benefits equal to those of American Senators, while many hard working families can't get any such benefits. Criminals end up where they are because they have no respect for others and refuse to follow the laws – for this they do not deserve to have a free, easy ride. Countries with strict laws and swift punishment can leave their doors unlocked and let their children play outside – unlike the U.S. who pampers criminals!!!!!!!!

Terryold   October 16th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

The answer to whether or not the balloon thing was a hoax can be answered with the following info.-- Helium has a lift potential of .06 lbs./cu.ft...that balloon looks like it could hold about 300 cu. ft..That comes out to 18 lbs. of lift--duh ! I'm pretty sure the police should have known that from the beginning.

Robert Dunn   October 16th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Rick, great job! The public can count on you to give it to us straight. Everyday you broadcast just the facts. You are the everyman voice. Bless you Rick. Now I think if you just do a short segment on what happened in Florida when that drunk jumped in front of you, everything would be settled. Those right wingers would have to stop talking about it and everyone would see the truth. Mark Levine was talking about it, I knew it was lies. You show him Rick what the truth is. Bless you........Bless you.

John Duncklee   October 16th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Hi Rick,
Greetings from Rhode Island. I have recently lost my job after 23 years with the company. It has given me the opportunity however, to catch your show on CNN this past week.
I must tell you, you now have a HUGE new fan! Thank you for your incredible attention to issues currently in the news and your unique presentation. You are the BEST!!!
Wishing you continued success with your show. I'm "hooked"!

Sandra Cianciolo   October 16th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

Sonehow got bumped from my e-mail to you regarding the sheriff of Maripose County. Don't know exactly what he is doing that is against the policy of ICE and you neglected to ask that question, but I was taught that breaking the law brought consequences and illegal immigrants have broken the law. Unfortunately, there are millions of people in this world who live in the same or worse situations than those who have chosen to circumvent our system of immigration and we just cannot help them all. Other countries have strick rules and penalties for illegals because they realize the salvation of their country is at stake-when we realize what mispalced compassion is all about?

Danny Auvil   October 16th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez I just recently e-mailed the NFL commissioner and thanked him . If Mr. Limbaugh was allowed to buy any team last week would have been the last time I watched the NFL. I'm from the working class–a coal miner.

Carolyn   October 16th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez, that is all well and great, but this SHOULD ALSO INCLUDE MR. RUSH LIMBAUGH. He has been caught up in so many lies that he should be forced to be made to retract EVERYONE of his mistatements. Enough said!

maralyn55   October 16th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Well, mr sanchez u have restored my faith in the radical liberals with your accountabilty statement concerning Rush. Liars always get caught especially when the LAWYERS are present. Congrats on the integrity and dignity you showed tooo bad it took a day in court to get you to FESS UP!

Erik   October 16th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Rick,

I just wanted to let you know that appreciate your stories on Sherrif Arpaio from AZ. I currently live in Puerto Puerto but was raised in AZ. It is widely known among hispanics that for years he has been overly aggressive in his attitude towards Mexicans. He has been viewed the majority in the Mexican American community as "Anti Mexican" not just anti illiegal immigrant. It's nice to see the Feds knocking him back down to earth for once...........Erik

Robert Dunn   October 16th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Rick, You are the best.. Keep going..I knew you wouldn't Post it . Rush has no business in the NFL. Man up Ricky. Keep up the good work.

Jen McMillan   October 16th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

Good for you, Rick! Although it is pretty clear that you are a committed Democratic guy, I appreciate your fairness and objectiveness in this matter. If only others in the media, BOTH on the left and the right would be man (or woman) enough to admit when they have gone too far. The coverage of this most recent Limbaugh situation has been, as usual, completely unfair. If only reported comments made by Limbaugh were taken in full context! We know, however, that will never happen. Kudos to you Rick, this time...

Steve Van Norden   October 16th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

Rick,

I am generally a Fox News person, however I shop all the news channels all the time to keep track of what message each news organization is sending.

Today at about 2:45 PM I surfed over to CNN just in time to hear your apology about your reporting on the Rush/NFL story.

It takes a big person to do what you did on national cable. Hats off to you. My faith in CNN (used to be my favorite) was certainly improved today. Thank you for being a true journalist!

Jerry   October 16th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

I AM PROUD OF YOU. I wish other reporters would step up to the plate when mistakes are made. I watch CN (liberal) & Fox (conservative) to get both sides before I makemy decisions.
Thanks

HJB   October 16th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

On the Islamic organization, CARE. Any possibility that the Israeli lobby groups could be behind the scenes, trying to blackmail this group?

Any powerful Islamic organization is likely to be seen as a threat in some way to Israeli interest. They won't like any islamic group to mess with their hold on the US government.

Rob Sarnowski   October 16th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

I'm a Conservative, but must say that it is refreshing to see a Commentator admitting a mistake and apologizing for it. Both sides could take a lesson from this so that we could all be more respectful and fair to opposing views.

Wilma Jones   October 16th, 2009 4:08 pm ET

I am appalled at the interview with Sue Myrick, regarding Cair and the "infiltration" of Muslims in government offices, too numerous to mention. I think she should really concentrate on the influence that AIPAC has on so many of our Congressmen and Senators; then we would really get to the influence of foreign governments on our government's foreign policy which is constantly being undermined, not only our own security but peace in the Middle East.

attorneybtlaw   October 16th, 2009 4:08 pm ET

ENOUGH ALREADY>>>get off the ballon story. yes it is news but LOCAL news and reporting on it all day is just too much!!!!!

amanda henn   October 16th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

I am so tired of you defending illegals, I get your latino but why do you have to support illegal entry. They need to be sent back and and anyone who hires them or rents to them should go to jail for a long time. The law should be changed as well so the children they drop here should not be citizen so we don't have to pay for them forever.

TrexFlyer   October 16th, 2009 4:18 pm ET

I live in CA and would love to move back to the USA. This state is over run with Illegal immigrants. Sheriff Joe is RIGHT ON with his actions. I am no racist, I have many hispanic and black friends. One of my best friends is a LEGAL Immigrant from Thailand. I have no problem with anyone who comes here legally. This is a huge problem and must be addressed but not by another amnesty like in 1986. That was a one time offer and we were guaranteed it would'nt happen again. Without fixing the boarders this was so predictable. This goes for ALL illegal immigrants not just the hispanic ones.

Kip   October 16th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

Hi Rick,

I am a liberal and believe that getting our agenda is more important than the truth. So if we lie about Rush Limbaugh it is OK since we have a higher calling.

You did a great job in accusing Rush of being a racist, job done. Ok to apologize now over a possible proceedural error.

Keep up the good work

R. Morehead   October 16th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Why don't you make sure of your facts before tossing around accusations of racism. Not only was this unfair to Limbaugh, it is divisive at a time when most decent people, black and white, are being pitted against each other by the likes of you and your political agenda. I hope you're proud of yourself for trying to divide the country.

John Speasmaker   October 16th, 2009 4:55 pm ET

I believe that you could have cared less that the quote was unverifiable. I believe that you were hell bent on reporting this regardless of what real fact checking would have turned up. This was a case of “it is easier to say I’m sorry and get forgiveness” than admit you set out intentionally to do wrong. If you believe for one second that ANYBODY thinks this was an honest mistake you are delusional. I think that Rush has a big mouth and quite often allows his own emotions to cause the most stupid and careless things to come out of his mouth – a fault that he often blames on liberals. He lost me years ago when he used to parody people with AIDS and likewise the homeless. However, he is basically a good man who just shares his opinions and makes commentary on what is going on in this country – basically entertainment.. However, he has every right, guarantied under free speech protection, to do what he does without fear of the kind of thugish act that you just committed.

You, sir, do not have the right to do what you did. A fee press, in order to stay free, has to act responsibly. You have a responsibility to GET IT RIGHT!!! When you do things like this you make the next person who reports ANYTHING less believable – from the right or the left.

I believe that what motivates all of this is an attempt to criminalize free speech and shut down political voices with which you disagree. Didn’t the left used to be all about free speech? Are not you a refugee from Cuba? Isn't this what Fidel, Che and Raul did to their enemies after the revolution? What more vicious and damaging lie could you spout but that someone would find ANY redeeming feature of slavery? Shame on you!!

I have heard Rush say some amazing things. Things that would make me scratch my head and things that finally prompted me to turn off his program for good but I have never heard him say anything like that. He’s just a big goof.

I believe that you set out to do this and arrogantly believed that you could get away with it. Did you learn anything from what happened to Dan Rather or are you just so stupid that you could believed that nobody would follow up on this. Shame on you!!

You were a hero of mine after the way you confronted that idiot Charlize Theron when she tried to make out that Cuba was a free society. You had her by the short hairs and she melted under your fire like the plastic airhead that she really is. No more!! You lost me, Rick. I am looking for honest people to report the news. It is getting more and more difficult to find those people. You are not an honest man. You are not a good reporter. Shame on you!!

Donna Jonsson   October 16th, 2009 4:57 pm ET

After seeing the "home video" of the balloon lift off, and seeing the Father' s anger and kicking the chair or whatever it was, confirms my initial suspicions that the boy was indeed hiding from his father. The Father said he had been angry at the boy and so he hid as he "usually does" when his father is angry. I think the boy is afraid of his father. I don't think they should be investigating an hoax as much as the father being abusive. I mean, taking the kids out Storm Chasing is enough to wonder about the man. The boys all looked a little like deer in the headlights. Even the mother looked quite intimidated.

Rob   October 16th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

Sheriff Arpaio is the only true American that lives in Arizona! Liberals wake up hes doing the job he was elected for and it makes your life better in the long run! if liberals feel so sorry for the illegals then put your money where your mouth is dont expect every tax paying citizen to have to pick up the tab! Take em into your homes and care for them without tax payer help or else send them home!

John Duncklee   October 16th, 2009 6:17 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh is the biggest bag of wind that has ever belched into a microphone. He is also a 24 carat AH and a deep seated racist. Why anyone listens to him on a regular basis is a dire warning about the intellect of the electorate. Please keep him away from television my switch for off is getting bruised.

John Duncklee   October 16th, 2009 6:21 pm ET

Good heavens I was being overly moderate with my comments on Rush Baby

Your just another liberal who uses wikipedia as a reference tool. That is just lazy. The truth may sometimes be offensive, but some people can not handle the truth. That is why you hate conservatives. That is why you think we can save money and provide better health care. Ignore the man if you choose, but do so at your own loss.

Dewey   October 16th, 2009 6:35 pm ET

I just heard Rick Sanchez's non-apology about Rush Limbaugh that included an insult to Rush and ended with a flippant and dismissive "Our Bad".

Rick Sanches, you are an ass and a disgrace to journalism. I guess that's why you work for CNN.

A pox on all of you.

Jeff Genovy   October 16th, 2009 6:39 pm ET

Hey Rick, great job on your reporting of Rush. I don't understand why CNN's ratings are consistantly way lower than FoxNews? I mean you guys make loads of money and think your so smart and you still can't figure out that reporting the truth is what gets ratings. Its a good thing your not a conserviative Rick, if you were you wouldnt have a job right now. You guys keep up the good work at CNN.

Randall Morgan   October 16th, 2009 6:47 pm ET

Rick... thank you for your retraction, of course, with some people the damage is done. They will not think to follow up further. I have to say that the American people are growing weary of this type of reporting... and we will finally, I believe, stop supporting those who continue to report lies.

Maureen in CA   October 16th, 2009 6:48 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez: Your "apology" for your Rush Limbaugh lies are as pathetically inadequate as your "journalistic" abilities, which so exemplifies why CNN is at the bottom of the ratings tank among the mainstream media, and Fox News at the top.

David Kalman   October 16th, 2009 6:53 pm ET

You are a jerk!, Check the facts you schmuck!

Susan   October 16th, 2009 6:54 pm ET

Why would you say something without checking facts first? And so many did it. I think thats morally wrong. I hope all who did it learned a lesson and will start checking facts.

Kevin   October 16th, 2009 6:56 pm ET

Apology appreciated. Im not a fan, but you gained a bit of my respect for stepping up. I know some will want more, but I good with it.

Marsha Hunter   October 16th, 2009 6:59 pm ET

Rick Sanchez, Like most liberal bias news reporting these days-you have it wrong! All of the main media news reporters are so "in the tank" with Obama that they will believe anything anyone tells them or they read and of course without checking it out. All of you liberals should go over to the socialist countries and write what ever you want to and see how far you get over there. The only news channel that checks and double checks their facts is Fox news-fair and balanced.

Robert Madden   October 16th, 2009 7:06 pm ET

Dear Rick,

Thanks for being a "stand-up" guy on the "Rush Limbaugh" thing! My respect for you has moved up a notch! Both sides can learn from what you did, when you apologized.

The majority of people (Right & Left) just want honest, and balanced news/commentary. Hate-filled rhetoric from either side turns most of us off. I was pleasantly surprized when I heard and saw you correct your statements.

I will definitely check-out your program because of that.

God bless!

Rob Madden ("ParsonRob")

PS. And "No" I am not related to "John Madden"!

Ed   October 16th, 2009 7:06 pm ET

Sanchez,

You need to return to school and review basic journalism 101, but then again what you do has no relevance to journalism.

Anthony Petrore   October 16th, 2009 7:11 pm ET

Comparing yourself to Woodward and Bernstein?? Are you serious? Did you even bother to do any checking that the statements that Limbaugh is accused of saying actually were made or did you just blindly parrot them?

Woodward and Bernstein, give me a break. As I remember from reading "All The President's Men", Ben Bradlee put both reporters through them mill before printing a single word. You're journalistic standards are more closely aligned with Al Goldstein than Carl Bernstein. CNN should fire you immediately. You, sir, are a complete joke.

Where are you comments concerning the statements that Stacy Ferguson has made about the CIA, etc.? She actually has an ownership interest in the Miami Dolphins. Not only is there proof of those statements, they are recorded for posterity on her records. My God, you are a complete idiot.

Kevin   October 16th, 2009 7:18 pm ET

Rick, thank you for your apology to Rush and especially for your statement about holding yourself accountable. That level of integrity is sorely lacking in the media these days as partisan reporting seems to be all the rage. Please keep it up. You have won over a cynical viewer with this gesture. Thank you.

Judith   October 16th, 2009 7:23 pm ET

Your "apology" is kinda like trying to put the feathers back into the pillowcase isn't it?

Jim   October 16th, 2009 7:33 pm ET

You and every journalist that uttered the falsehood about Rush should be held accountable. Not just for uttering it, but for continuing the lie even after it was denounced by many in the media as a lie. There should be fines, jail time and you should lose your employment for these types of actions. If you will willfully spread lies, then you should lose your access to the market that gives you that ability in the 1st place. Journalists need to start being held to a higher standard. If you violate the 1st rule of journalism-to always be truthful, then you do not deserve to be in your position.
It is blatantly clear to me that if Rush was still in the buying group, there is no way that you make this apology when you did. You would still be clinging to your lies, trying desperately to force him out. I for one will never again watch CNN. Your credibility is zero with me, and I will encourage others to turn your network off as well. You ALL should be ashamed of yourselves. Do the right thing and resign your positions, or face the fact that you are merely entertainers from here on without an ounce of credibility or audience.

Lou   October 16th, 2009 7:39 pm ET

Rick, you,Wolf and the rest of the staff is why I don't watch CNN. I like the facts. Agree or disagree with Rush, you should be ashamed of yourself. I do respect your apology, but the damage was done. You're a journalist. Act like one.

walt   October 16th, 2009 7:43 pm ET

Rick,

It was good that you apologized for your inacurate comments about Rush Limbaugh. You of all people should know that when you make a comment that could be considered defaming to an individual, you better check your sources thoroughly. It wasn't too long ago that a news anchor named Dan Rather made a similiar mistake. He repeatedly reported on a story that was completely false, and we know what happened to him. You made a BIG mistake this week....Learn from this mistake. In the future, verify before you report, be accurate, be honest and remember that integrity in the current news reporting business is highly lacking. You have the opportunity to recover from your erroneous ways, and hopefully you will before your ratings suffer ever more losses of viewers.

Josh   October 16th, 2009 7:45 pm ET

Seeing Rick refer to Limbaugh as divisive was pretty arrogant. Rick, get a mirror. That way you can look at a divisive figure 24/7.

Dennis Mihora   October 16th, 2009 7:48 pm ET

Rick is not a reputable Newsman. And that is OK. We all know he is a left wing liberal who likes to slant the stories markedly to the far far left. That is OK as long as he is not lying. I think of Sanchez as a liberal comedian who often takes things out of context. In this case he was lying or should we say CNN was lying. But he did the good thing and appologized for his words.

ulyssesmsu   October 16th, 2009 7:52 pm ET

That's right, Rick–apologize to Limbaugh AFTER the damage is done, IF you can call this an apology–which it isn't.

An honest man, Rick, wouldn't say that you "have been unable to independently confirm" a quote that you knew from the start wasn't true. Who do you think you're fooling?

But you're not an honest man, Rick. You're a liar and a gutless coward. What would really be nice here would be if Limbaugh would show you how "divisive" he is by suing you and your bosses for $everal hundred million in libel damages.

That's probably what it will take to stop you and those like you from teeing off on the next conservative–and the next and the next–whose politics you don't like whenever they get ready to move into some area of society where you don't want them to be.

MARIE WAYNE   October 16th, 2009 7:53 pm ET

Sorry, but being sorry isn't enough, since what was said cannot really be retracted once it has been said. A GOOD newsperson would know
that he had to have his facts before saying something. But who is
a Good newsperson today??
What happened to tolerance? Was it only tolerance until the other side got into power?? Looks like it.

Jose   October 16th, 2009 7:58 pm ET

Good man Rick, you're a class act.

I have a request, I would like to see "Disabled in America". I think it would shock the world.

R. Weaver   October 16th, 2009 8:02 pm ET

Rick,
You are nothing but a punk. Are you are part of the "fake but accurate" journalists guild? True objective reporting is dead in this country. Freedon is dying

Kevin   October 16th, 2009 8:04 pm ET

ARE YOU PEOPLE RETARDED? As an aviation technician for over 20 years, I knew it was a hoax. There is no way that silly contraption of a balloon could ever carry a 6 year old 10 ft off the ground, much less get him that high in the air, The thing wasn't even inflated all the way. If there was any weight in it the balloon at all it would have been filled and tight at all the surface locations. The weight and gravity would have pulled downward as the hot air orhelium would have risen upward making the inflatable surfaces tight. That canister at the bottom having any weight in it would have acted like a ballast. But Idon't expect the media on a slow news day would have consulted anyone that knows anything about Hot air Balloons to verify this. Would they? They just got another 15 min of fame.

Trainscout   October 16th, 2009 8:12 pm ET

If Rush is such a divider and hated by African americans, please explain why Rush was a big supporter of J.C. Watts when he was a Congressman from Oklahoma, and why Dr. Walter Williams is a frequent guest host on Rush's show, and why Thomas Sowell is often quoted and his writings admired.
Wait, they are all Conservative black men- it doesn't fit the stereotype lie the Left wants to pass as truth.

Y Sanchez   October 16th, 2009 8:22 pm ET

To "CubanMom". You must not even listen to the Rush Limbaugh show, otherwise, you would know that what Rush says about 'your' president, is only the truth. He bothers to do his homework, unlike some no, most, at CNN, CBS, MSNBC, and the rest of the liberal media who only make it their job to harass and go after good decent people and try to destroy them, if they happen not to agree with Obama or the rest of the liberals. This happens to be a free country and not one person should be harassed or tried to be silenced because of their views, even if those views are critical of the president or any other liberal politician! Do your homework 'cubanmom' and Rick Sanchez!

Nicole   October 16th, 2009 8:24 pm ET

You, CNN, MSNBC are in the tank for Obama and you did a terrible thing by reporting falsehoods.

shawn   October 16th, 2009 8:28 pm ET

What a lame "sort of" apology! That wasnt just some unfortunate little misunderstanding. That was a very inflamatory terrible comment that was NEVER stated! Shame on you!!

Larry   October 16th, 2009 8:28 pm ET

Rick-
You were right to apologize. We need more reporters who seek to report the truth. It is for that reason I have been a big fan of Glenn Beck. He attacks both Republicans and Democrats. I appreciate his passion to support our constitution. We need more reporters who have that passion. I appreciate his alerting us to all that is going on with the radical "czars" which most reporters and news sources are totally ignoring. I was a Russian linguist working in the intelligence field in the sixties and have German in-laws who grew up under Hitler and who are now struggling to pay for a broken socialized medicine system. I also worked for INS for several years, travel frequently to Mexico which has a corrupt government and have many nationalized businesses such as Pemex. I have children who live in China, and have visited there. I say all this to say that I know a little bit about communism, socialism, and corrupt government. It appears we are on a fast track downhill. Until and unless our news outlets start educating the masses about what is happening, we are doomed as a country as we have known it.

Ron in Chandler AZ   October 16th, 2009 8:40 pm ET

Rick,
My understanding of Sweat Lodges includes the use of fire heated rocks where water is thrown on the rocks, producing steam much as in a sauna. Constant rhythmic chanting is performed, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere. At three different times during the ceremony, the healer or leader throws small crystals onto the fire making sparkles to enhance the experience. On the third time, the sparkles are often laced with drugs, giving an illusion of an out-of-body experience. Possibly the $10,000 per person fee encouraged the over use of the mind-altering drugs, to ensure everyone got the maximum experience.

CJ Mom   October 16th, 2009 8:40 pm ET

It's a little late isn't it Rick? Why bother to attempt any show of integrity now? Of course you should have verified your statements before you made them, .......but on CNN you spew false claims daily. This time, you're cost Rush his dream of being an NFL owner, and I am sure you're quite pleased with yourself.
This, and the other blatant Conservative bashing you do daily, is why I have never, nor will I ever, see you show, or anything else on CNN.
Talk about haters........you people take the cake.

Kenneth Peterson   October 16th, 2009 8:53 pm ET

I doubt this will be read or answered. I am tired of CNN News and I am sorry but after 24 years of watching your news I can't continue to support your agenda, whatever it is. Your inaccurate reporting was getting old so I chose to use my remote and change the channel. I feel it is the job of news organizations to report all of the news correctly. Since you seem to be so one sided about every single aspect of current events I have to draw the line.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Peterson

Deborah   October 16th, 2009 8:56 pm ET

You sir, are no journalist. You should be ashamed. You have joined the club of liberal liers. This is why CNN is in the toilet, along with MSNBC.
How long is it going to take you people to realize we are tired of lies and truth wins viewers? I am always amazed at the ignorance so many of you so called journalist present yourselves with. I will no longer watch CNN.

tony   October 16th, 2009 8:56 pm ET

Rick....
With your experience, you know better! You also know that when a "credible" journalist says something like that, it is assumed to be truthful. You should also know that once you state quotes, the damage has been done regardless of future apology.

Rudy   October 16th, 2009 8:57 pm ET

Rick, In your position, one would think that you would have a better understanding of our language. Include me and my team is correct I believe. It has been a long time since fourth grade english!

C.R. Mote   October 16th, 2009 8:58 pm ET

Rick Sanchez is a loudmouth, holier-than-thou buffoon. This is just another instance in which he made a complete jackass of himself.

JOAN HENNESSY   October 16th, 2009 8:59 pm ET

JUST A COMMENT ON RICK SANCHEZ, REALLY ENJOY HIS DELIVERY OF THE NEWS. NEED MORE LIKE HIM ON THE AIR.

Cousin Art   October 16th, 2009 9:04 pm ET

You should have done your research to start with, but you were too eager to do a hatchet job on Rush Limbaugh. And then there are still morons who are complaining about your apology. The bottom line in this story is that an American was prevented from acquiring property because of his beliefs. Now, if Limbaugh, a powerful millionaire with a 5-day, 3hr pulpit can get squished like that, what can a schlub like me expect? If you want an actual journalistic scoop, look into this: this Limbaugh trashing has the White House's pawprints all over it.

Roberto   October 16th, 2009 9:10 pm ET

The "apology" came only as a result of impending legal action. It should have come out of honesty and sincerity. It should be all "journalists"'s repsonsibility to fact check prior to printing, or announcing something. Whatever happened to true journalism? Is this the idiocacy that our university systems are putting out?

By the way, why do you pronounce your name San "as in can" chez?

Susan Walker   October 16th, 2009 9:15 pm ET

Rick,

I am so disappointed in you this week. What is your credibility if you make statements as fact and you have not even checked their validity. I am referencing your comments about Rush Limbaugh. You have lost a reader and listener. Shame on you.

vance woodard   October 16th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

i wish you give your guests time to respond to questions you ask them and not interrput them so often

chris sellati   October 16th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

OOPS ! Really bad Rick, Rush will continue to sue you if I have anything to do with it! Apology not accepted as you are trying to protect your wallet, good luck it's people like yourself that made slanderous statements and you won, Rush got bumped out by a bunch of lying newscasters and the state run media. Now it's time to pay, a simple apology is no good too little to late. Others including the NFL will not sleep well tonight and for some time in the future. NFL (not for long).
Good luck in the future hope to see on tv but in court next time.
Thanks again for making cnn show it's true colors as they didn't catch your stupidity before airtime.
GOD Bless

Latino are here in this part of the world, because of the Spanish. Native Americans are not Latino and they originally came from Asia. How far back do you want to go? The reform is because of illegal aliens not immigrants,if you don't know the difference, you are part of the problem. And it is a crime,Max. $10,000 & 6 months in jail.

Eddy Duran Miami Florida   October 16th, 2009 9:51 pm ET

As an American that was borne in Cuba (Notice I don't called myself Cuban-American I believe we should all be poroud to call ourselves Americans)and came to this Great Country in 1961 as a so called "Peter Pan" and has firmly believed in that your advancement in life should be based on merits rather than race or country of origin. or quotas needed to be filled, and find it very disturbing to see that unless you are black, or so called hispanic you are called a racist for expressing your opinions , however blacks and hispanics can call white americans anything in the book without running the risk of been called racists.
It would be nice to ask "Mercury"Morris, Al Sharpton (which by the way it would be interesting to know where did he study Theology to call himself Rev. I dont't believe the guy can say the "Our Father"), the players in the NFL,Warren Ballantine and so many others , if they would be in favor of implementing"Affirmative Action" in the NFL and NBA in oder to level the field.
I think we can survive having a corner back or receiver that perhaps is not as good in order to fill a quota, than a police officer or a fire fighter
that perhaps is not qualified or not the best available for the position.

May I take this opportunity to remind the CubanMom that Fidel Castro had 90% or more approval from the cuban people and denied many times until after the Bay of Pigs fiasco in 1961 that he was a Marxist
Lenninist all alone. and time will tell unfortunately if President Obama' agenda as a Socialist , surrounded by socialists and even communists like Vance Jhonson is trying to convert this country into the United Socialist Republic of America.
May GOD HELP US AND MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS AMERICA

Danny Auvil October 16th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez I just recently e-mailed the NFL commissioner and thanked him . If Mr. Limbaugh was allowed to buy any team last week would have been the last time I watched the NFL. I’m from the working class–a coal miner

Danny I appreciate your concerns and being a coal miner, my uncle lived in a holler in coal country in the great state of Kentucky, my mother was born in W.V. what this is about is much bigger than football while I like to watch it we can't let our sport emotions get the best of us we're about to loose our freedom at that point the NFL won't matter much to you or myself. Would you like to live in Russia, Pakistan, Lybia etc. I can answer this for you. HELL NO!! we are very close to being there, thanks to people like Rush we'll take a stand and defeat the current government and the NFL if they continue to support liberalism.
PS we always can watch the Wildcats, I'm a little biased for the Hurricanes.
God Bless

Susan   October 16th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

FINALLY!! An apology. My question is... as the professional journalist that you are.....WHY would you EVER print or quote a source that could NOT be CITED?

My goodness.. I'm freshman in college and I learned that YOU must cite your SOURCES in my very FIRST english class.

Well, you got caught and hung. And sad to say.. you DESERVED it. And, if you did that at my school.. you could have BEEN easily fired.

Debi   October 16th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Glad to see that you apologized but you should have checked your facts before trying to destroy someone. I have watched you several times on CNN and you tend to have an attitude when it comes to anyone being conservative. I hope this was a "teachable moment" for you. Now how about reporting the truth on what really is going on in the Obama administration and all his croonies. That would be resourceful and admirable news!

Nina   October 16th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

I'm really tired of all the comments about the "bad leftwing liberals and the dumb rightwing conservatives". What ever happened to "we are all Americans" and we still have the first ammendment. Instead of badmouthing Americans, if you don't like us then leave us.

Jerry   October 16th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

All I can say is CNN stands for Communist Network News. CNBC, ABC and CBS are just as bad. Report the real news not the LIBRAL propaganda you want us to hear. Fox News is the only news station to be trusted.

marylou   October 16th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh did NOT say the things you quoted. You grudgingly and obscurely admitted your error and apologized, as you certainly should.

Could it have been any weaker?? You also hid the topic of your apology so maybe most people would miss it. You certainly were not weak when you attacked Rush Limbaugh and attempted to destroy his integrity by telling lies. There was not a shred of truth to be found anywhere to back up your lies.

You, as well as all the others who spewed venom, should have checked your sources, and as a reporter you are well aware of that fact. One wonders why you didn't!

You accused a man of being a racist based on absolutely NO facts at all.
Is it really your business to smear a man by calling him a racist because YOU don't want him to own a sport team? Do you really think you have that right?

Reporters, like you, need a refresher course in what REAL journalism
is all about...you don't have a clue!

Eddy Duran Miami Florida   October 16th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

I would like after reading Jean's of topic opinion to say that unless Jean is part Indian the so called Latino were descendents of Europeans mainly Spaniards and came to the Americas before the
founding fathers of this Great Country.
What Jean does not realize or wants to face is the fact that most Latin American Countiries in the Hemisphere if not all, starting with Cuba, Mexico, Argentina, Nicaragua etc. etc. had corrupted governments and dictators that didn't care about the well being of their countries and their people and on the other hand this Country althoug not perfect is a Country of Laws and not "Caudillos" and in less than 200years became the Greatest Country in the World and as painful as
it is for people like Jean we the Latinos had the same opportunity to make our countries prosperous and we blew it and have no one to blame but ourselves and should be grateful that the people of this Great and Generous Country opened their arms to us.
Jean if you consider yourself a Latino entitled to what the people of this Country were able to accomplish and hate and envy everything about the U.S.A. do us a favor and go back to your country of origin and try to make it better.

Mary Ward   October 16th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

It was refreshing to read your apology about erroneous quotes attributed to Rush Limbaugh. It was the RIGHT THING TO DO. Congratulations on your ethics!

Nancy Batchlett   October 16th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

This comes as no surprise to me that CNN would report something false when it has to do with a story about a conservative. You relish reporting what you think is something damaging against a conservative – while ignoring any story about Obama and his liberal administration. CNN has lost all credibility and you Mr. Sanchez should not even call yourself a journalist. The damage is done – you only issued an apology to try to mitigate some damages with regard to a lawsuit which I hope and encourage Mr. Limbaugh to file.

Eddy Duran Miami Florida   October 16th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

I do hope my comments are posted and no excuses are found to
deny my right to express my opinion.

billie mitchell   October 16th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

It's nice that you apologized but now, why don't you be honest? You & your network knew you were lying & you didn't expect Rush to retaliate. Well, you were wrong as you always are & I for one hope you pay a very high price for your hateful speech. Some people will do anything for a buck. It's no wonder you are trailing Fox news so badly. Hopefully, you will finally have to dicontinue broadcasting. That would "send a chill up my leg".

Michael and Shelley Brown   October 16th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Too little, too late.

Steve Allen   October 16th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

Like a good reporter CHECK YOUR FACTS FIRST BEFORE YOU REPORT NOT AFTER. CNN IS A JOKE.

Don   October 16th, 2009 11:12 pm ET

If you guys at CNN some day start 'REPORTING' the news and the TRUTH, instead of CREATING news and SPECULATING! Then you may probably get at least HALF as many viewers that watch FOX!

Duke Snider   October 16th, 2009 11:40 pm ET

CNN and it's left wing agenda of Obama worshiping has not gone un-noticed. The lying attack against conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh also have not gone un-noticed. It appears it is common practice of the C networks to attack without fact checking and attempt to ruin anyone they disagree with. Perhaps if CNN spent more time fact checking Obama and telling the truth about his agenda and if he really does have a birth-certificate as no doctor, nurse, or hospital in Hawaii has yet to produce one or come forward instead of the one they give people born to US citizens out of country at the child's time of birth despite the large rewards being offered, CNN wouldn't be laughing stock it is. Perhaps we can not change CNN but we can start boycotting CNN's advertisers.

Duke Snider   October 16th, 2009 11:43 pm ET

Why is it all comments must be reviewed by CNN and when a post is sent in I always get "It seems you have already said that" when I have not? More censoring of real opinions because the truth hurts so CNN refuses to print them as to lead others into thinking there are no dissenters?

thomas spear   October 16th, 2009 11:45 pm ET

Rick.......of course you are an idiot and we know better than
to think you are a professional in any way. That said.....rather
than just rail on you, knowing you will not understand any of
this, I want to say a few words to "Kip" or "Kippy"
whichever it may be. You have no higher calling "Kippy"....
you are fortunate to even share this world with the rest of us.
Low lifes such as you infect the gene pool and therefore your
vote no longer counts. Go away!!!

Jim   October 16th, 2009 11:47 pm ET

I know you might find this irritating, but Fox News was telling us many of those quotes were spurious from the start. That's another reason why I watch Fox and sometimes scan your blog. My guess is you would have checked the quotes much more closely if it had been some left-winger accused of making outrageous remarks.

James Bennett   October 16th, 2009 11:57 pm ET

This is the first time I've visited your site, because I never watcxh CNN. I don't watch it because I demand my news be accurate.

I got here from a link from a site noting that "CNN" was apologizing for their horrific character assassination of Rush Limbaugh. That apology is weak.

Whats more I see a list of people you've "invited" to appear on your show. Why would any of them appear if you can't do the very most basic fact checking?

You've put yourself and CNN in the same category as Dan Rather and CBS as former journalists who could not be bothered to check their sources.

The one thing you could do to redeem yourself would be to do a hard hitting, and ACCURATE story about how the character assassination was conducted, who ordered it, and was the White House involved?

I'm going back to never watching CNN now. I hope you are fired. Bye.

Corey   October 16th, 2009 11:58 pm ET

Mr Sanchez,

While not a Limbaugh devotee, I believe he has the right to say what he believes in. What I find disconcerting about this, is that a "news" outlet concerns itself with private business. If he wants to be a part owner of a football team, or any company for that matter he should not have to be subjected to media censure and/or criticism. So what if he claims that the NFL wants McNabb to succeed only because he is black. That is his opinion. He is entitled to it. Just as you are entitled to refute the opinion. Expanding this entitlement to the point of libel is wrong.

I stopped watching mainstream media and reading mainstream newspapers long ago. (I'm here only because of a link in an email sent to me by the MRC) Mainly because you stopped reporting the news a long time ago. If/ when you decide to step back from your current duties of picking presidents and deciding who should be business owners, maybe you'll get me back.

Sion O'Neill   October 17th, 2009 12:25 am ET

Post my comment please. I should have figured this would be censored from the facts.

jstan442   October 17th, 2009 12:35 am ET

you and cnn are dispicable-i am elated that you have no audience to speak of- i will bet that rush has a bigger audience than you-you are not reporters but liars and kiss-ups of the obama admin. -if you did a tiny bit of reporting than you would be asking questions for example 'why are we giving russia a look see at our nukes and to be able to count them-i think that sounds treasonous don't you/ but i'm sure you have no love of country just love of the lib agenda.

Rusty Roberts   October 17th, 2009 12:45 am ET

Rick... you, Lou Dobbs and Anderson Cooper are the only REAL reporters that CNN is lucky enough to have. You made a mistake, and you apologized for it in the case of Rush Limbaugh. Thank you for setting example for the rest of the people that work with you.

Cheers,
Rusty R.

Samuel Pilimon   October 17th, 2009 12:56 am ET

Donde los cojones, Ricardito? You lets some pencilnecked lawyers make you, the great Rick Sanchez, apologize? I know you trying to be cute and apologized for reporting the quote and making the mistake of not independently verifying it, not for smearing that racist gabacho Limbaugh, but that is so MARICO, girl. I thought you were a campeon for us illegales against the rich, white, nativist, conios like Limbaugh but you fold at the threat of a lawsuit? You got lawyers too, man and the resources of Time Warner behind you so man up!

Fathersham   October 17th, 2009 1:08 am ET

Your apology should have been directed to Rush. Not just a general statement.

Go back to Duke Snider first comments, then the last one Jim@11:47.

And to Mary Ward, and Evelyn Rosa "this network has no ethics!"

Chris Sellati....Go down your coalmine and pray for freedom. Freedom of speach and all the other freedoms you iherited. It's time you read the U.S. Constitution.

Jeff O.   October 17th, 2009 1:22 am ET

OK, OK, OK – Help me understand this. Rush Limbaugh, who has been a commentator 3 hours a day for over 20 years could only be brought down with out-right, completely unfounded lies that were dutifully repeated by a non-verifying, pathetic media with the help of race baiters of the likes of Sharpton and Jackson. At the same time and in the same deal, George Soros, the self-admitted Nazi collaborator and convicted insider trader, is completely ignored and given a free pass. Now, I know the alphabet media is fair, just ask them. So, help me understand exactly how that works?!?!

It is clear from some of the posts here that bash Limbaugh that the author has never listened to his show. If you want to confront him, call into his show – liberals get head of the line priveleges. Glenn Beck has installed a telephone line on his set and only White House communications director Anita Dunn has that number so she can call him directly to tell him where he is "lying" or is "wrong." That phone remains silent. Oh, did I mention one of Anita's self-proclaimed "favorite political philosophers" is none other than Mao Tse-tung (you know, the genocidal maniac responsible for 50-70 million deaths of his own people) – oh, how I digress.

cruisin   October 17th, 2009 2:15 am ET

Sheriff Joe's enforcement of the law has brought him political grief from certain quarters for years. When the Phoenix police, as policy, were not allowed to turn over illegals stopped for traffic violations to ICE, the mayor, Phil Gordon supported this policy. Furthermore, the police weren't trained and qualified to implement ICE's procedures. Officers in the Sheriff's Dept were. (Phoenix is in Maricopa County.)

Right about this time, a young Phoenix police officer was killed by a motorist pulled over for a minor routine traffic violation. Then a large old privately-owned furniture store was losing customers due to its parking lot being used as a gathering place to pick up workers, many presumably illegals. The major and police wouldn't intercede.

But Joe did. And he began turning over any illegals encountered during routine stops or encounters to ICE. He raided businesses when he received tips they were hiring illegal immigrants – our law here. He butted heads with other metro police chiefs but especially with Mayor Gordon; both publicly feuded.

Activists took up the charge Joe was targeting or profiling anyone of Hispanic appearance. The Sheriff successfully defended those charges, from what it appears but they continued being made. The FEDS were sic'd on him, reportedly by Gordon.

Joe is largely extremely popular because he's pretty simple and straightforward: you break the law you go to jail. And illegal immigrants are breaking the law. Phoenix and Arizona have so many kidnappings and murders fueled by the illegal immigrant issue. Not to mention the other serious problems.

He's also a publicity nut and I think he does so as part of deterrence. The impact of his enforcement has made Phoenix less popular of a haven for illegal immigrants.

Crimes associated with illegal immigration are no longer "minor". The coyotes have turned violent; kidnappings and mass murders occur frequently. Drug and gun-smuggling are associated with the lucrative business involving illegal immigration.

The restrictions placed upon him for now is that he can send illegal immigrants suspected when sent to his jails to ICE.

Joe is either loved or hated. He doesn't really care and isn't about to back down from anyone.

J   October 17th, 2009 2:15 am ET

It's ok, Rick. We knew you were lying when you said it.

Bob Downs   October 17th, 2009 2:16 am ET

I too am a big fan of Sheriff Joe...and wonder why the public doesn't
pressure their own Sheriffs to act more like him???? It seems to
me that he is upholding the law, which is his sworn duty. This is also
something that the Feds are apparently not doing.

As for Rush, he doesn't need my help but fwiw, I find the major
news outlets, except for Fox, to be shallow at best and at worst, agenda driven. How about just just reporting the news and that means all of the news? I think they are often guilty of lying by omission.

For not fact checking their material is very poor journalism and maybe
it isn't even journalism.

Tadd   October 17th, 2009 2:24 am ET

You say "earlier this week we provided quotes attributed to Rush Limbaugh to illustrate why some people and players felt that Limbaugh was too divisive to be an NFL owner" now, since you're not a biased newsperson I assume somewhere you were supposed to offer at least some defense from the Limbaugh side. But I saw the video and you never even made a token gesture to defend Limbaugh or present some sort of balance. Instead, this was pure slander with nothing that had been verified independently. You pose as a journalist but rely on heresay to turn a newscast into an emotional op-ed with all the dramatics of daytime tv. You just do the right thing and acknowledge that you're a liberal latino advocate, not a serious journalist.

John   October 17th, 2009 2:25 am ET

Kip October 16th, 2009 4:33 pm ET says:

"Hi Rick,

I am a liberal and believe that getting our agenda is more important than the truth. So if we lie about Rush Limbaugh it is OK since we have a higher calling. You did a great job in accusing Rush of being a racist, job done. Ok to apologize now over a possible proceedural error. Keep up the good work"

This is what's wrong with America. The poor excuse for a human who wrote this obviously doesn't understand that truth is the MOST important thing, not political sides. Without truth, nothing matters. Political viewpoints are rendered intellectually dishonest and morally bankrupt when truth doesn't matter. The writer of the above post reminds me of what Joseph Stalin called "useful idiots".

Mark   October 17th, 2009 2:32 am ET

Used to be CNN was considered the most neutral of the news networks. Obviously no more. And it shows in the ratings: Fox outpolls CNN, MSNBC and all the other cable news shows COMBINED! Read the Nielsel Ratings and weep. Looks like many of CNN's viewers went to Fox. MSNBC will always have it's tiny little market niche for the brain dead and koolaid drinkers. I also wonder if there is any possible legal action here; libel, slander, etc. costing a business deal. You know what attorneys say about libel and slander, truth is a defense. Unfortunately, CNN lost its grip on the truth sometime ago.

Dan   October 17th, 2009 2:44 am ET

I decided after this complete fabricated debacle that I won't watch another NFL game until Rodger Goodel personally apologizes to Mr. Limbaugh. I'm no Rush fan, but I think Goodel's inept handling of this by embracing lies and politics has turned me off for good. My friends and relatives are also going to boycott watching the NFL and we are telling people to not watch live NFL games. Get your fix on ESPN. Don't watch the corrupt and lying NFL. Let them bleed for their support of lies for a year. NFL=cowards.

Jamie   October 17th, 2009 3:35 am ET

YOU SHOULD STEP DOWN OR BE FIRED!!!!!!!

You are a disgrace to journlsts everywhere. Your actions prove you have an agenda, instead of reporting the news. These people claiming what about "Wanda and IMUS" and comparing this situtaion to thiers. The difference here is that Rush NEVER said the things, and wanda and IMUS did. Mr. Sanchez essentially lied to the american people (reporting uncorraberated news....rumors......same thing).

Mr. Sanchez you should step down from journalistic duties with that false-hearted apology of yours, and If you dont resign you should be fired.

There should be criminal charges brought against you for defaming someone like that. Im no Rush fan but I am an american. I dont care if you have one hundred dollars or one hundred million dollars, no one should be deprived of what they want or can afford. He has a passion for football and wanted to buy a team, you had a political agenda and a very loud stage and microphone. You used your position to derail and american dream. Shame on you!

I for one will not be watching CNN anymore as it has turned into a "Democratic Mouthpiece" instead of a news channel.

Rush Limbaugh   October 17th, 2009 4:37 am ET

The left's zeal to destroy someone is apparent. Lies and distortion are acceptable means to achieve their goals. I am not a Limbaugh listener but interestingly I feel as if I should be one , after observing some of the characters that were associated with this. Al (Tawana Brawley} Sharpton is given credibility by the media, along with Jesse("Hymie Town") Jackson. What a joke! It seems leftists can never defend their position without resorting to lies.

Thomas   October 17th, 2009 5:45 am ET

Mr. Sanchez, on one level, I appreciate that you took the time to apologize for attributing an unverified quotation from Rush Limbaugh to him. However, I do have to question your journalistic integrity, not just for running the quotation on air, but for your and your staff's apparently lack of effort to verify it prior to airing it and your delay in apologizing for your error. As a former journalism school student, I am appalled that CNN would have let you run with such a story that wasn't fact-checked prior to air because of the legal and societal implications. Like him or not, Limbaugh deserves the same basic respect that you expect, and that includes being given at least some benefit of the doubt when controversial quotations are attributed to him. You and your staff failed to do that, and no apology can erase that fact. The fact you still have a job with CNN after such a gross display of incompetence or partisan axe-grinding is amazing, but perhaps more of an indication of how far CNN's standards have fallen than how forgiving they are.

felice a. manzi   October 17th, 2009 6:04 am ET

You are a politically correct wuss, who, I am sure, wets his finger every morning and puts it out a window to see which way the wind is blowing. Take a stand on something, if you had any guts you would be defending Rush Limbaugh. You and most of the media are spineless reprehensible lackeys. Do you Fergie should be ousted of her ownership of the Miami Dolphins?

Andrew Ingram   October 17th, 2009 6:24 am ET

This half hearted apology shows again the ethical deafness of the liberal media. I am afraid bigotry is alive and well on the left.

Edward Vanover   October 17th, 2009 7:39 am ET

Do your apology on the air, taking as much time to explain your poor "broadcasting journalism" as you did in smearing Limbaugh, you poor excuse for a "news" source! It is you, and others like you on CNN who were the reason I no longer waste my time watching your channel. What sorry excuses for Americans!

Mike   October 17th, 2009 7:44 am ET

Is it the role of a news organization to find "facts" to support a belief that they have already formed? Or should the news organization "report" on events as they unfold without an "opinion". Rush Limbaugh is "Conservative" and CNN is "Liberal" and because of that, the "NEWS MEDIA" will attack because his ideas do not conform to those of CNN. This reminds me of the attack on President Bush by Dan Rather.

Eli Lott   October 17th, 2009 8:18 am ET

After your hack job on Limbaugh, I will always question your 'facts'. It is no wonder why some people will not go on your show. It is hard to have a civil discussion with anyone who makes up or uses other people's lies to promote their own agenda.

Barb   October 17th, 2009 8:56 am ET

The above commenters said it all. I still think you should have not apologized to that Racist he has hurt too many people and not apologized to them.

Tom Dimwitty   October 17th, 2009 8:58 am ET

CNN, you are not much on investigating before reporting, AND how is that "CROW" these days? have you tried it with ketchup or do you snack out of the toilet bowl all the time?

Santiago Perez   October 17th, 2009 9:01 am ET

Sheriff Joe is an elected official in his state. He does not have to follow instructions issued by the Federal government. Read the 9th and 10th amendments to our Constitution. Good for you, Sheriff Joe!

B. BAKER   October 17th, 2009 9:26 am ET

Thank you for being the only "human being" on CNN. Know how much you depend on your team but when a mistake has been made and for you to step up to the plate and admit something was not reported correctly showed you are a true boss and a human being. Thank you again

Charlie   October 17th, 2009 9:29 am ET

Why not do a journalistic report on the effects of the "incorrect news cycle"? Start with each NFL individual that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were, “Standing up for". Play for them the entire ESPN game day commentary were Mr. Limbaugh called out the media reporting on Mr. McNabb. Then do backgrounds on all of the people that made the racist comments that Mr. Limbaugh was accused of. Do a Nexus Lexus, or whatever, of all the positive things Limbaugh has said and done for the NFL. Research his charity involvements. List his personal connections to racist people and groups, as well as list all the minority people that know and support him. Then ask these individuals, your network and the NON racist Mr. Sharpton and Mr. Jackson, were representing if they all feel the same. Ask the NFL owners, the NFL commissioner, and the “Unknown financial partners of Mr. Limbaugh”, if they would have severed the relationship with Limbaugh if none of this was reported. If any of them say this would have changed their minds. If so, would you ask yourself if you are Libel? Count up all of the number of times and all of the minutes you reported the negative information, then, report the facts, with no color commentary, as frequently, and on as many time slots. I know how all outlets despise the fairness doctrine. Why not call this Journalistic reporting? Better still, let’s call it: “JOURNALISTIC –ACCURATE-VERIFIED-ACCOUNTABLE” Or JAVA.

Thank you

Charlie

Al   October 17th, 2009 9:47 am ET

Rick, help me understand.
CNN fact checked an SNL skit. Right?

CNN did not fact check horrible comments attributed to Limbaugh. Right?
Do you know how much tape of him is out there? How easy could that be? Labor intensive, but not rocket science for CNN.

Don't tell me you do a "fake news" show like Jon Stewart.

Is you staff too busy fact checking SNL and Sponge Bob?
What is wrong with this picture?

I listen to you daily on XM Radio. I am so disappointed in you and CNN. How can we trust anything you say?

I'm not a Limbaugh fan. I disagree with him politically, but he is no more acerbic or patisan than Chris Matthews or Keith Oberman.

CNN should be above this. You guys built the cable news biz.
This kind of sloppy journalism might be a reason CNN is not number one in the ratings.

Is management happy with the ratings? I'll bet not. All we expect is that you are fair and report the news.

Rick, what if someone attributed something awful about you that was totally untrue? What if it impacted your job? Would you be yelling?
I'll bet you would.

The comments attributed to him were vile. You should have apologized to him personally. You should also tell the audience how sorry you are for the sloppy journalism and promise to do better.

David   October 17th, 2009 10:07 am ET

It seems to me that in spite of the abliity to gain instant "fact check" information in this advanced technological age, that you and your peers in liberal media are so fearful of conservative voices. You will do anything possible to advance your left wing agenda. I have watched with amusement and disdain your attempts to discredit and destroy anyone who disagrees with you.

I ask you, is that professional media reporting, or is it political persuasion of the masses? Isn't this the land of free speech, or do you desire to see it changed to something else? That is why your ratings are so low. Rush Limbaugh is simply different from you that is all. Like all Americans, he has a right to his opinion. Why do you fear him so much? I think I know.

For my part, I have written to Rush Limbaugh and encouraged him to sue you for liable. I KNOW that thousands of others have also. If I was Rush Limbaugh, and other conservative media voices, I would hit you where it hurts, in your bank account, and make you prove every inflamatory remark you report. I would tie you up in the legal process for years and cost you as much money as possible.

America is becoming alarmingly polarized, and it is in no small part because of you and your organization's reporting misleading and one-sided news. Americans are beginning to wake up to this fact.

Your organization doesn't inform, it persuades. The liberal media in America doesn't have a clue what the American people really think. We are centrally and universally a conservative people. That is why me and MANY MILLIONS more simply do not watch CNN, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, et al.

We desire the truth, not politically motivated ideas. We wish to be informed, not persuaded...

I look forward to the conservative media's continued truthful and patriotic reporting for the nation they all love, and their continued growth in followers and viewers. All the while I will continue to watch the liberal media's slide into obscurity as more and more Americans realize what is happening in our great nation.

David,
A Patriot

Michael   October 17th, 2009 10:08 am ET

"We have been unable to independently confirm that quote"?

What you are TRYING to say was that "I reported a LIE"!! Seems you are not able to make a real apology, Rick.

You are not a reporter, a true reporter does not report a lie as a matter of fact and then give a half hearted apology that we "can't confirm".

Rick, if you "can't confirm" you DON'T report it as fact!!!

Can't CNN do better than this kind of sloppy journalism?

Jeffrey Brunn   October 17th, 2009 10:13 am ET

Way to go Dan Rather. So desperate to bring down a conservative that you'll do and say anything. I'm surprised you had the courage to apologize. You probably had one of your staff members write the apology. This is exactly why you guys will continue to lose viewers to Fox News Channel. Keep on hammering those nails in you clueless liberals!

Lampton, Edward   October 17th, 2009 10:14 am ET

Sanzhez should apologize to Limbaugh directly on his TV show. Didn't his mother teach him anything. I bet he was only too glad to use the original material when it actually made a difference, and gladly apologize after the invitation to ownership was rejected..This is why people rightly don't trust Sanzhez and to a lesser extent CNN.

Anthony   October 17th, 2009 10:21 am ET

Mr. Sanchez,
Once again, you, the unprofessional "NEWS" channel has shown all America, how little "TRUTH" mattters. CNN should remove you immediately from anything but "Human Interest" stories, maybe about Latino pets or something along those lines. Leave the real "NEWS" to journalists, not hacks like you, who are too busy spreading BS to check the facts first. It is bad enough the Latino population has plenty of other problems to overcome. Now they have to fight another.
Sucessful Latinos who can't distinguish realty from fiction.
Your half-assed smiley apologize was transparently disingenuous.
CNN, FIRE THIS MORON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course I realize that CNN won't post this, because they can't face any criticism, even when they are wrong. You are personally responsible for the further disintegration of your viewership!!
KEEP IT UP POPPI...........

Phillip   October 17th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Your apology, written so that it has minimal exposure is too little, too late. When you cross the line to make assertions of this magnitude and do not vet the source, you are guilty of Yellow Journalism of the worst kind. I expect you will be hearing from Mr. Limbaugh't attorney in the near future and certainly hope you are called out publicly for your obvious left wing bias. You should probably also consolidate your financial resources as I have an idea you will need them.

Jim   October 17th, 2009 10:38 am ET

If I were a journalist and I were intentionally duped by sources in a coordinated attack to defame an American citizen, my journalistic curiousity would compel me to journalistically investigate the attackers. At the very least, I would reconsider some of the commandments that my jounalism professoros instilled in my cerebellum (yes, I do mean the primitive part of the brain). Then I would use my journalistic skills to write a sincere, journalistic apology to the victim of the attack and to those who depend on me as a journalist to impartially report the truth. I'm just saying, that's what I would do if I were a journalist....

Dewayne Burgess   October 17th, 2009 10:40 am ET

I did not see the apology from Rick because I refuse to watch CNN. As a retired Air Force officer, I figured out long ago that Fox News was the only news organization which accurately, objectively and fairly covered military news. I assumed they would provide the same objective, factual coverage of other news events and have come to believe over the years that my assumption was correct. What happened to Rush Limbaugh should scare the wits out of any rational American. When a man as powerful as Limbaugh can be falsely accused of making racist comments, without one properly sourced shred of evidence, can be prohibited from purchasing anything he can afford, it is an egregious example of denial of a man's basic rights. Those on the left with a political axe to grind tread on increasingly dangerous ground when they immediately and with seeming impunity play the race card on every issue. I fear that we are in the process of setting back race relations sixty years in this country.

Jim Pratt   October 17th, 2009 10:45 am ET

Re Rush – Mission Accomplished – Damage done and no apology will be able to erase the hate from the left.

Has anyone considered how athletics, especially football and basketball are racist.

Blacks make up the majority of players. They are bought, sold, and traded! (Remember the history of Slavery!) They are physically abused until they can no longer "perform" and then dumped into society where most are unable to cope.

And, as eugene W. -of the washington Compost- so eloquently wrote in an op-ed today, "Given the demographic profile of the average NFL franchise owner — white, male, middle-aged to elderly, richer than Croesus, egocentric" is there any doubt!

You and eugene "Dub-Ya" may get what you ask for if this type of "journalism" continues uncontested.

Maybe "journalist" like you and e "Dub-Ya" will start your own show with dan blather. We could only pray for such.

BTW- I seldom watch cnn (makes my blood pressure rise) and found out about your apology from a Legitimate News source, The Media Research Center.

Ty Welch   October 17th, 2009 10:46 am ET

I have listened to Rush since the late 1980s. I am not a racist and neither is he. Nice how you lied about him very openly with terrible effect and then hide the retraction on a website. There are many out there now who only heard the smear and not the corrrection.

'Conservatives need not apply'

Got it! Conservatives need not have anything to do with CNN as lies and distortions are we'll get.

Doug Hammontree   October 17th, 2009 10:56 am ET

Rick Sanchez ,your blatant dislike of conservatives has blinded you to the truth. You are a suck-up to the liberals, which is most of the media. I have listened to Rush for ten years or more and I have never heard him say anything racist, maybe off the wall, but not racist. When I hear people like you and others, who are racist, report that Rush has said racist stuff on his radio show, I wonder what radio show are you listening to.....it's not Rush's show.....you just spout off what you hear from other liberals who don't give a shit about the truth. And if your little letter is supposed to be an apology....well there's a lot lacking in your apology and I'm sure you were forced to write your little wimpy letter and nothing about it was heartfelt. All I hear when I listen to you is your opinion....stop calling yourself a journalist because you are not....a journalist checks his facts first!.....if you want to voice your opinion then maybe you should become an opinion columnist or start your own radio show.....I doubt you could get many listeners but at least people would know where you stand and you wouldn't have to disquise what you do as journalism.

Randy   October 17th, 2009 10:59 am ET

This is exactly how so called minority groups +++----------6666666669-

Rush   October 17th, 2009 11:11 am ET

I hope you have your lawyers ready. This one's going to cost you!

Suellen Fitzsimmons   October 17th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Mr. Sanchez,
I have followed you occasionally and found you and your reporting to be so biased that I can know longer watch your show. Your reporting shows such a superiority that it's very hard to listen to. I don't understand why Latinos, such as you, aren't deriding the corrupt Mexican gov't. Instead you choose to put down America and Americans for trying to hold together and enforce some sort of policy that might address the problem...unbelievable!!!!!.Could you have been as prosperous in Mexico, Argentina,Paraguay,Cuba???Instead of being so superior, you need to show some gratitute for this country. Attack the problem at it's source, don't transfer the problem to bad America and bad Americans. And get off Joe's and Rush's back. Your 'chip' is showing.....

Margaret Compton   October 17th, 2009 11:24 am ET

It goes to show that even CNN can have honest reporting
thank you for showing your honesty
I do like and watch CNN from time to time

Mark Mitchell   October 17th, 2009 11:24 am ET

To make up stories or quotes just to keep Rush Limbaugh from being part owner of a n NFL franchise was wrong and you need to apologize to him on the same stage you used to slam him.
Who is the "racist"? Is it the individual who says that he wants everyone to succeed based on their merits or the individual that wants certain groups to succeed based on their race?
-Mark

Dave   October 17th, 2009 11:30 am ET

Dear CNN and Mr. Sanchez
I really do want to watch your network but don't do to your liberal bias. This whole episode with Rush and The Rams only galvanizes your unfairness and hate. But it revels a more telling thing. You are just bad and opinionated journalists. You aren't even ethical or professional. Then to boot and I want to be forgiving, you lack sincerity in your retraction and barely acknowledge any culpability for not checking sources. So I am left wondering if I should watch you? What bit of credibility do you have that I should give you my time or attention? I see none so enjoy your continuing slide into oblivion and irrelevence.

Ricky in Texas   October 17th, 2009 11:30 am ET

Dear Rick
You and CNN suck. Just like most of the media, you lean so far to the left that you can not ever stand up straight again. This apology is a joke. The damage has been done which is all you care about. Guys like, Rush, Beck, and Hannity are the only truth out there. You and the left never challange what they say, instead you attack their character. Why is that? Maybe because what they say is the truth and it scares the hell out of you. The NFL welcomes dirt bags like Michael Vick but not Rush. Could it be because Vick is black. Maybe the NFL is racist. The leftist news media has also given Obama a free ride. You do not question or challange what he says. I think it was Matthews on MSNBC (or is it PMSNBC) that had a chill of excitement run down his leg talking about Obama. I think most of the media has that same chill. To bad they have no brain to investigate that chill. Hey, cubanmom, why don't you drag your ass back to Cuba. Sounds like you and Castro would make a beautiful couple. Oh, sorry cubanmom, if the left have their way the United States will turn into a big Cuba and you will be happy here. Look at the Czars Obama has surrounded himself with. They are all Communist, Marxist, and extreme left wing radicals. Wake up America. It is time to take back our country before it is too late.

Dean   October 17th, 2009 11:44 am ET

CNN in general, and Rick specifically, are socialist hacks.

No lie is too good for them, especially if they can demean and smear an American Loving individual.

You are almost in the big time with the Rather hack job. Used to be that only the weatherman could not be trusted on the news, looks like you all are jumping into that boat.

Hacks, and Fascist ones at that. Looking forward to watching the ratings of these hack shows continue to slip as the American people wake up more to the way you all are trying to manipulate them.

Keep up the good work Rick, you are a star (although a Red one).

Hack

Mike   October 17th, 2009 11:46 am ET

It was good that you apologized for making a quote about Rush Limbaugh that was not correct, but the damage has been done. Now how about fixing the damage and state that you don't think Rush is a racist and that he should be able to be a part owner of an NFL team. Or am I asking too much, as we all know that CNN really isn't a news outlet but more of a gossip column. Heck even the National Enquirer does more fact checking than CNN.

Jaime   October 17th, 2009 11:55 am ET

Mr. Sanchez,
The Lies you and your Team at CNN made about Rush Limbaugh were shameful. How can you call your self a News reporter when you so easily use false statements as the Truth? We the American people deserve better than this. Also your so called apology was weak and insincere.

jim b.   October 17th, 2009 11:56 am ET

i can't believe in a time in America we get people that tell lies and half truths to promote an agenda of a political party that any fool can see wants to change our way of life. We are not europeans we are Americans. We are not nazis or terrorists We love our country and our way of life. if you people on the left can't deal with that, then why don't you go live with those you so admire and want to be like. then tell me how that works out for you. in the mean time leave our only news outlet we have alone. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS THE USA.

M. Piper   October 17th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

You call that an apology to Rush Limbaugh? It's a little late after the horse (the lie) is out of the barn. The damage has been done!!
You were so anxious to crucify Rush you didn't take time to check the facts, but the "Obama-Media" does that all the time. You want him to come on your show? Why? He'd make apple sauce out of you!!
I am praying for our nation, for our leaders, and pray that someone will realize the error of their ways and STOP spending money they don't have... and make a sensible health care reform plan. Have any of you read the Constitution recently?
God bless you all...

S.A. Kirkham   October 17th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

I'm appalled at the media – in general – for the sloppy practices we are subjected to daily. Confirming a quote should be – Journalism 101 – an absolute pre-publication prerequisite; placing it in full context should be another stone-etched rule for ethical mass communications professionals.

My concern now: Have you and your team learned this valuable if elementary rule of conscientious reporting yet?

Gena Herold   October 17th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

You should be ashamed of yourself. What has happened good, honest journalist where one went out to verify before running a story that could hurt someone? Ah, but that was the idea wasn't it.

Mike - Spring, TX   October 17th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

Sanchez is a loser. He rushed to publish without checking the facts, just like Dan Rather. Wimpy apologies won't get it. Rather was fired – Sanchez should get the same treatment.

Bernice   October 17th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

Don't sweat it Rick...Limbaugh is nothing but trash, country hater & influences the weak minded that are looking for a reason to hate their country...Mr. Limbaugh is a walking heart attack..look at the beached whale...The sooner he's gone...the better!!

Richard Kranker   October 17th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

While it is doubtful, (particularly if it damages anyone on the right) perhaps this will influence you to verify statements before using them against someone with whom you disagree. You are entitled to your opinion. You are not entitled to be irresponsible in matters concerning others.

Candace Owen   October 17th, 2009 12:50 pm ET

You should spend as much time ON AIR retracting these lies as you did reporting them. A written retraction on the internet is nice but it certainly doesn't have the impact of an on air retraction. About this whole mess... As usual, CNN jumped on the evil conservative, without checking the facts. No wonder the media isn't trusted, people can only have so much smoke blown at them.

Tim   October 17th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

Obama is a non-American Muslim. oops, i can't independently verify that. My bad.

WC Kroen   October 17th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

Rick Sancez is a liar. For a whole week he used false quotes to villify Rush Limbaugh. His apology a cool "My bad" for seriously damaging Rush's credibility and reputation is an egregious misuse of the media.

CNN ratings continue to tank as more and more people realize that there "news" is simply left wing garbage and that they underustimated the intelligence of the American people. Sanchez should be ashamed and resign but that wil never happen to him or his buds, Slippery Al Sharpton, Hymie town Jackson who are profesional shake down artists. CNN is a joke.

Loyd Cutchall   October 17th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

I think you should have made an on air apology to Rush Limbaugh.
Of course CNN never misses a chance to denigrate a conservative without fact checking.

Bob Johnson   October 17th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

Careless unreliable journalism hurts us all.
Your prejudice is showing in your "report" of facts.

Bob Johnson   October 17th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

Rush only called others Racist for overrating a player.
for that he was called Racist.
So sad.

C. Brooks   October 17th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

With all due respect, that's the apology? You slandered a person as a racist based on false and defamatory and admittedly unsourced comments and you're sorry for the release of one quote?

I'm all for forgiveness and letting bygones be bygones, but this is trying to just get by. It's not good enough. An apology for something like this should have the same energy that the gleeful and false depiction of Limbaugh as a racist should have.

We all understand you guys don't like each other and have said some pretty harsh things, but as far as I know, only one side has put out defamatory comments about the other.

CNN needs to set the record straight and expend some energy doing so. CNN needs to demonstrate that you all are more interested in journalism than politics, because unlike Limbaugh, that's your job.

So, please do it.

R. S. Venters   October 17th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

Your "half-hearted" appology to Rush Limbaugh "sucks" to say the least. Be a man. Admit you were wrong on your newscast so all may know.

Dean   October 17th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

I have to admit I never knew who you were until your comments about Rush Limbaugh. I am appalled at the media/left and their treatment of any conservative.
I am tired of the media and have stopped watching television news and get news from different sources. Your treatment (especially after your own illicit history) of conservatives and obvious bias against them only reinforces my own belief that the news media has an agenda, is biased, and is completely without credibility.

Shasta   October 17th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

Well its all been said, and i heard Enuff BS.......I will stick to TRUTH AND FACTS and seems to me, I can only get that from RUSH, HANNITY AND BECK, THANK YOU!!! NOT CNN

Tom in Virginia   October 17th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Rick:

I am no right wing nut. I am a middle of the road voter who ignores party affilitation and votes for the person with the best ideas. In saying that, the obvious bias of CNN in favor of the Democrat party became even more obvious with your reporting of completely false, fabricated and defamatory information about Rush Limbaugh. As a news reporter, you should be ashamed because I will never look at you in the same light. Who is to say what information you report on in the future is truthful? Following you reporting on these complete lies to harm the reputation of Rush Limbaugh, a true right winger, I read that you were previously arrested for DUI and fleeing the scene of an accident where somebody was actually killed? Is that story true, and if so, how can CNN possibly allow you to represent them on the airwaves?

I am not a big Rush Limbaugh fan, but I hope that he files a lawsuit against you personally and CNN for the reporting of completely fabricated information in an effort to harm his reputation.

This is a sad day for CNN.

Cyntha Bergstrom   October 17th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Open and Standing

Why should any of the people you have listed in your Open and Standing list even bother coming on a show that won't even tell the truth and acutally not get their facts straight. Fox New blows you out of the water when it comes to truth and facts.

Kerry Thompson   October 17th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

I am immediately reminded of CNN's post Katrina "stories" claiming that New Orleans blacks tried to shoot down rescue helicopters and that blacks commited cannibalism in thhe Super Dome. CNN's stories portrayed all African Americans as "savages" (Brent Bozells' own word) . Truth is without the liberal left media most of the racial hatred in America would be gone.

picomanning   October 17th, 2009 4:26 pm ET

Rick Sanchez has dutifully stated what his lawyers have told him to say. Yet his objectives are clear. To follow the dictates of his 'superiors' and thereby keep his 'high' public position and thereby continue to thrill his entourage by his celebrity. There are however higher standards adhered to by 'higher' men. Rick will not know that higher league. I can only hope that Rick's admirerers might look above Rick's low horizon. Rick has reached his highest ability and for as far as he has risen that's fine. Good job Rick. but you could have been a contender.

Roberto   October 17th, 2009 4:46 pm ET

What a joke. I thought you were supposed to be a journalist. Aren't you supposed to look into things before you state them as facts? Typical left wing smears. People like Anderson Cooper talking about "tea baggers" and Olberman with his snide remarks of Malkin being a bag of meat with lipstick(paraphrasing). Again, what a joke

lori from Houston   October 17th, 2009 6:02 pm ET

Rick,
I hope Rush sues you and CNN for your hateful unsubstantiated comments. News media's need to check their sources before making statements that affect people's lives. You did not want to take the time to validate because you let your personal feelings about Rush win over good journalism. Instead of being a journalist, you wanted to jump on board with all the other political far left colleagues. Mistakes have consequences!

Turner V. Reid   October 17th, 2009 6:06 pm ET

What's new. The left almost never reports the facts about Conservatives.
The Post Dispatch never does.

catherine batcheller   October 17th, 2009 6:16 pm ET

Thankfully, it would seem that more and more people are realizing they can't trust main stream media for anything except bias, manipulation/distortion of the facts and reinforcing their own leftist political agenda. I agree, the apology should be issued directly to Rush Limbaugh himself, not just a luke warm general statement. I already no longer watch ABC as a rule and now I will add CNN to the list. You all are a disgrace to your profession. The news is no longer the news but PR arm of the leftist policies of this administration.

And as to Sheriff Joe, oh that this country had more men of his caliber and integrity. We would have far less crime and a better grip on illegals living in this country with more sheriffs and border patrolmen the likes of this man. I take my hat off to him and will be praying for him in this disgraceful turn of events. Criminals and fringe groups are being rewarded/protected while hard working Americans who believe in God and country are being attached. It sickens me.

Debra Hall   October 17th, 2009 6:24 pm ET

Nice to tell the truth finally, but perhaps too little too late. One with such a colorful backround as Rick Sanchez, should be real careful about throwing stones. Their glass houses break so easily.

Tony   October 17th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

Reporting – as a fact – something that Rush never said??? Why apologize? That is what we expect from CNN – unsubstantiated fabrications.

Betty from Iowa   October 17th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

Rick–with all the negative remarks on this page-it is easy to see who listens to Rush. He has brainwashed american society.
If Rush would apologize for all the comments he makes every day, he would have to have a 24/7 showtime. Just watching him huff and puff and jump up and down in his chair , is enough for me. What an idiot.

M. Dolson   October 17th, 2009 11:29 pm ET

Oooh! Your bad!

Perhaps in addition to your heartfelt apology you could have provided a big thank you to Fox News for keeping you honest.

Heh, Heh, Heh.

RD   October 18th, 2009 12:45 am ET

Rick,

You have shown integrity & dignity with this apology. I am not a Rush fan, I do not like his views BUT, the statements that were made about him not only by you, but also on MSNBC and others, were false and SHOULD have never been made without any CONCRETE evidence to support it. I am a BIG fan of yours and I believe your a good journalist who made a mistake. You owned up to your mistake like a MAN and admitted you were wrong. I respect that and I thank you.

Dave   October 18th, 2009 2:04 am ET

I'm still waiting for your apology to Rush Limbaugh, and detraction of your previous reciting of Rush "statements" which cannot be substatiated. If they were true, a little research would have found some substantiation. I'm guessing you graduated from the Dan Rather "I hate the guy, so don't let facts get in the way" School for Journalism. Be a man for once, make a CLEAR apology and retraction, and move on.

Catherine Burr   October 18th, 2009 2:40 am ET

I grew up in California, and bought into the fashion that Rush Limbaugh was some reactionary. Over the years, due to fighting some corrupt people on my own, I learned a lot about where such lack of questioning leads. Now I listen myself before judging. While he's not my favorite talk show host, he is gaining in my favor. Rush talks about substance, and as our country's political establishment continues to wreck the country, his insights into a number of areas continue to illuminate. People are interested in Rush because he's right – more often than some people. I also came here due to an MRC link. I see a number of trolls, despite this board being moderated. Due to my own history, I know that a lot of liberal thinkers don't realize that they are "liberal". But that number is shrinking, as the reality dawns on more and more people. That's why Rush and people like him are targets, are criticized from even the bully pulpit. Real leaders would deal with criticism, and real journalists would be a part of criticism which would attract from its insightfulness. The MSM are hacks who demonstrate their bias daily on what they cover and what they do not, as also compared to past journalistic achievements. You all ought to be ashamed. You degrade yourselves and your fellow Americans by your failure to serve with any honor whatsoever.

Nacilbuper   October 18th, 2009 9:09 am ET

Why won't CNN post my comments? I speak the truth.

Jeffrey Smuzinick   October 18th, 2009 10:59 am ET

It looks like a lot of people that were quick to pull out the "Rush quotes" are quickly hitting the delete/replay button. Why did you put me in a coma?

Ken   October 18th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

Rick, can you tell me why the call it the Iraq war or the Afghanistan war?
I thought you had to declare a war, right? These action by our soldiers are police actions and not a declaration of war.

You have never placed any of my comments on your TV program. This one I would like to see.
Respectfully
Ken from MO.

Accept Change   October 18th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

It is hard for some people to "let go of the past." It is also hard for some people to "accept change." but it is not difficult to make change if we respect, recognize and accept what is before you "reality. Nothing stays the same. All things must "change." As the winter comes, so shall the spring. There is always sunshine after the rain. No matter what is said by anyone, what you do in the dark will be revealed in the light. Change will come with us or without us. Accept the things that was distant to happen, release yourself of the past and you will be free indeed to accept "Change in 2009 – 2012." Free the mind and rest will follow. You cannot rid hatred, but you can change hatred to love, peace and harmony through educating yourself.

If Rush was forced out as a buyer for the Rams, why weren't the REAL racists forced out as a buyer of the Miami Dolphins? Why wasn't that reported, Rick???

Professional Football Fan   October 18th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

Rick, as you know football is a professional sport with professional players. What in heck was this person thinking of . If you are not professional then stay out of the game. Let the pro's do there thing and for the retards, well there is no help for them.

James Guy   October 18th, 2009 1:24 pm ET

Betty from Iowa... what a lesson in liberals your comments make.

Rush has brainwashed American society. That's not your opinion, that's stated as something you believe is a fact. Got a source other than some trumped up liberal study? It's patronizing. It shows your contempt for anyone who doesn't think like you when in fact, by your own value system – if you can ascribe values to anything liberals think – your own value system exalts getting along and collaboration with people... taking time to make sure people are heard. Just as long as they're not conservatives – now, they need to be silenced, educated and indoctrinated. Who is the inventor and proponent of politically correct speech? Liberals. It's their way of saying that conservatives must not be heard. Free speech is not just when it's liberals talking, Betty.

This brainwashing idea is a contemptible belief of yours, and you need to take all the time that's necessary to re-think your reason for saying this ridiculous thing. This statement is the belief – your belief, Betty – that there are people inferior to you. Is that what you believe? Truly, is that where you want to be? Is that what this country's founders believed when they wrote the idea that all men are created equal? If people who are delusional like you had your way the statement would be that all men are created equal as long as they worship at the alter of the liberal secular progressive doctrines. That's not who we are.

If Rush would apologize? Because he is so ***STUPID*** as to not think like you? What in your wildest dreams makes you think Rush needs to apologize to anyone for the things he believes? Tell us what one of those things would be? His belief that people should live in a society where the government doesn't deny their own voice and freedoms? Where the government doesn't burden people's lives? That elected officials ought not to be corrupt, greedy folks gaining riches at the expense of working folks? That elected officials should respect the constitution, not shred it? That people shouldn't kill? That people should be honest? Tell us, Betty, which specific believe is it that Rush articulates that he should apologize for? Just name one. But you have to substantiate that he believes it and articulates it. That means you can't bring us quotes written by lying liberals who ***wish*** Rush said something. He has to have actually said it, and you have to prove he said it, and then we'll both go to Rush and demand he get his head on straight and apologize for this thing. What would that be, Betty?

Lastly... What an idiot.

Brian   October 18th, 2009 2:04 pm ET

Hey Betty! Just what should he apologize for? Please list some quotes.

Dean   October 18th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

Betty from Iowa, I could say the same exact thing to you...

Paul   October 18th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

Rick,

Dan Rather called. He wants his Fact Fabrication Machine back.

If you really were "accountable," CNN would have suspended you the way CBS fired him. Your researchers should have gone the Mary Mapes route.

The "Most Trusted Name In News" - please.

And don't go, "Well Fox and Glenn Beck said... once." That's not responsibility. That's justifying your own incompetence by comparing yourself to the more incompetent. It's still bad journalism.

Despite having a prestigious graduate degree in journalism, on this point, you were still a bad journalist. You broke the first rule of journalism: report verifiable facts. I suspect that your ideology made you slightly more willing to skip the fact-check process about negative quotes "made" by someone you clearly don't like.

Angelo   October 18th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

I don't even know why I'm commenting. Bash a conservative before getting all the facts? Sounds like business as usual for the media these days, including CNN. I do appreciate the apology, but probably not necessary as people who like Rush (like me) don't watch or listen to CNN anyway and people who hate Rush do watch to see you to bash him and conservatives in general.

While I'm at it I would like to say that I blame the "mainstream" media for the headlong descent into a Chairman Mao style socialism which we find ourselves now headed. This could have beem stopped cold, simply by telling the truth about Obama and his supporters and their plans for turning us into a socialist country.

The simple fact is that most Americans have no clue, and for that I blame the media. I still don't understand what you expect to gain by embracing socialism, but it sure isn't more viewers.

Monzon   October 18th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

Rick,
I've watch your career from the days in Miami as local reporter to cable "news reporter" and wished you luck as a fellow Latino. You shoould remember your roots and remember how we were treated when we where growing up an move forward.
it's a shame that you let your personal opinion cloud and bias your professional reporting an so becoming a opinionated show as the one you so attacked. Its a talk show made to get a rise out of people. I am not a fan or listen to The Rush Limbaugh Show.
Your now another show ( not reporting NEWS ). I can't really say that i would watch or record you on a regular bases. CNN is almost to the same point a MSNBC a tabloid station. I back to watching the local station for news coverage at least its 80% correct.

Un Cubano

jvega   October 18th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

What a weak apology to Rush Limbaugh! I'm sorry but I'll believe and support Rush before I listen to Rick who seems to "not" have done his own research and homework for for his "Rush" story. In his eagerness to slam Rush he overlooked looking for the truth. So, what else is new? This is why CNN has such a low rating.

kjogar   October 18th, 2009 6:55 pm ET

It is good that you apologized for the Rush to judgment. But this is why CNN and other news organizations are mo longer trusted. When you have an agenda you cannot be impartial.

Anne Pica   October 18th, 2009 7:41 pm ET

Sanchez,
is not a law inforcement person with years of experience like Sheriff Joe Arpaio. He is just a front man who sits in front of a camara and reads what he is told to present to the TV audiance. He is just a front man for the Cnn partisan view against the American people and anyone who trys to enforce the laws of the land on illgal aliens. Sanchez is against anything that represents securing the borders, or sending illegals back, or even putting illegals in jail who steal from our country. And that is just what they are doing.
He is a disgrace and should not be on the air and continue his insults to the American people. Now you know why CNN is down in the ratings because the American people are fed up.

Kim   October 18th, 2009 8:17 pm ET

It is a sad state today that media is so hungry to bring people down that they do not confirm quotes and facts before discussing them publicly? What has happened to the commitment and integrity of the media? Many years ago the media actually was considered a watch dog for the people. Boy, those days are long gone. It is too bad you couldn't have apologized long BEFORE you ruined a man's reputation. It seems a bit late now. The damage is done.

Jim   October 18th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

Rick,I bet if Limbaugh had been Hispanic, you would have double and triple checked your sources.I have never watched Rush Limbaugh, I am an Independent, and try to form my own opinions from listening to numerous news sources, but I do expect to get unbiased reliable info.Is that too much to ask?

k. w. stewart   October 18th, 2009 11:24 pm ET

When the liberal media went after Rush Limbaugh, it made conservatives even more committed to getting the conservative word out. Thank you, Rick for keeping conservatives engaged.

MERLYN HYERS   October 18th, 2009 11:40 pm ET

A Message From Rick Sanchez concerning Rush's purported statement that you made a written apology for making these verbal statements on the air, did you also retract those statements verbally on the air? If not, you have been a dishonest reporter hiding behind a written statement that the public will have no knowledge of. You become a liar by omission.

R. Morehead   October 19th, 2009 6:00 am ET

To Betty from Iowa...The point is not Limbaugh (I'm not a fan) People are angry because what is supposed to be a credible news org. aired total lies with an agenda to destroy an individual who is opposed to their ideology. Limbaugh today and who else tomorrow???? CNN has lost all credibility with fair-minded people all across the country not just Limbaugh-lovers.

Joe Buch   October 19th, 2009 7:15 am ET

Sanchez, you're a mutt. Nice apology, not very sincerethough, you'll report anything as long as it hurts a conservative.

Lis   October 19th, 2009 7:42 am ET

What is so terrible about a rich man wanting to spend his money on a sport that he loves? Oh, wait, its because his political views are different than mine. They say FOX News is biased? What a joke! You liberal kooks at CNN had biased wrapped up years ago.

Mike from Atlanta   October 19th, 2009 8:00 am ET

Rick, are we supposed to call you a hero now that you've apologized to Rush? You slandered his reputation only because you disagree with his views. I hope he sues the crap out of you and CNN. Maybe then you and your network will get real about reporting the truth.

tom faile   October 19th, 2009 9:34 am ET

At least you provide an apology (albeit weak) and have stood up for yourself. I appreciate that. It is unfortunate that we live in a society where cheap, unsubstantiated, shots are allowed, and the cowards who make them simply slither back into their 'dark spaces' until the next opportunity arises for them to wiggle out of and fire off their cheap irresponsible spew. I still believe CNN is above this type of reporting, and not yet in the gutter completely with MSNBC in this regards.

Laney   October 19th, 2009 12:27 pm ET

Rush called President Obama a RACIST, with a deep seated hatred for WHITE PEOPLE.

Why isn't anyone talking about THAT soundbyte? That was an outrageous, shocking thing for him to say, and he gets away with it. Why is THAT quote not important? Nevermind branding his policies as being akin to Nazism and all the other horrible, insensitive, ignorant things he says.

If I were making a business decision regarding Rush, I'd stay far away from him.

David   October 19th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

You were just jumping onto the race bandwagon Rick. I used to have more respect for you than that. Rick, everytime you hear someone scream racism, I guarantee that they are not caucasians, It is always someone going after caucasians. Frankly, we are tired of it, and we get disgusted hearing it on TV. Please don`t turn your show into a race show. Otherwise I will have to turn the channel. I thought you were doing a good job talking about Americans wanting a third party, about the wall street bailouts and other news, but don`t fall to this race baiting.

Mike Joffe   October 19th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

The ICE did all they could do to Sheriff Joe, not allow him to participate in their program. The Sheriff is still more powerful than a federal agency and he is sworn to protect the constitution. Sheriff Joe wins the Showdown!

Juanita Harris   October 19th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

Rick, I am glad you and the other so-called journalists were found out. Your little apology is meaningless, since you obviously want to avoid a lawsuit.

John   October 19th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

Stop rewriting history, Wolf did not ask the question, the father did. After the "Ah ha" moment, Wolf did not pursue it with interest or vigor. He moved on for half an hour and weakly came back near the end of the show, letting the Father change the subject. Wolf was lucky, it was not incredible journalism. Stop patting your Jeopardy champ on the back.

Dan D.   October 19th, 2009 3:21 pm ET

I'm all for the tactics employed by Sheriff Joe. Within a block of my home here in New Jersey, the police have been operating a traffic stop for over three hours, checcking license & registration, seat belts, cell phone usaage, etc. Operation is funded by the state and partially with stimulus $$. This is no different than the approach Sheriff Joe uses. I say we need more proacvtive law enforcement like his.

Ruth   October 19th, 2009 3:21 pm ET

You ask for interviews from people and yet when they try to comment and answer your question you cut them off, don't listen to what they have to say and besides being rude it isn't fair. Illegal is Illegal and I get tired of people trying to paint it a different color. I am also tired of paying for illegal benefits.

J DEL BAGNO   October 19th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

As usual CNN never checks their facts when attacking a conservative. They are just showing their bias against conservative Americans.
They spent 8 years attacking the Bush administration every time they had a chance. Now they shout the praises of the current administration and find little if anything to be critical of. They are just as biased as the rest of the liberal media and the general public is starting to realize how biased they are. This is born out by the growth of the Fox networks audience and ratings

TK   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

come on Rick lets be accurate, Fed immigration said Arpaio could indeed enforce sate immagration law. He just could not do it under the federal ICE program. I realize your a far left liberal but report things accurately please.

Brian   October 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

You spread lies about Rish Limbaugh, you get totally hoaxed by a stupid American con family, you don't realize the USA has a serious illegal alien problem and instead persecute the Arizona sheriff, when is the almighty Home Security going to investigate you people?

Selena Western   October 19th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

Rick,
I am setting here today watching your interview with Sheriff Joe. You keep asking what crime the latinos have committed. The answer is simple... They broke the law and committed a crime when they entered OUR country illegally. We as Americans need more Sherifff Joe's to rescue this country, from people like you who seem to have a
no understanding of the constitution, illegal immigrants have no constitutional rights when they have broken the law to be here, the constitution was written for the citizens of the United States, not for illegal immigrants to pick and chose which laws they want to abide by. You being of latino heritage really shows with your biased comments, and actions to others, who don't express the same views you do. You try to make it seem like he is doing something wrong when he is simply upholding the law.

Tommy T   October 19th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Illegal aliens have no "Constitutional Rights" in this country, Rick. If the feds would do there job. The sheriff wouldn't have to do it for them. He should be commended, not harrassed for taking these gang members and drug pushers off our streets. They are not here for legitamate jobs. Illegal immigration is ruining this country. The whole world is moving in.

joecool   October 19th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

hey rick, since when do illegals in this country have any constitutional rights? maybe its you who are trying to get publisity since you may have some kind of simpathy for those people

Motor 8 in Maryland   October 19th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

Go Sheriff Joe !! Your doing the right thing. Be polite if possible, but if they don't belong here, send them back. This goes double for those who are or who are with lawbreakers.

ray   October 19th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

What a world we live in when we give money to failling banks and the banks give bonuses. We should reward people that get job and stay at them.SIMPLY WHERE'S MY CHECK OBAMA!

Larry Hood   October 19th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

Rick,

Just watched you trying to put down Sheriff Joe, and failing miserably. He made you look pretty silly, in my view. What makes you think that the feds are all-mighty? Sheriff Joe was correct - they DON'T have the authority to tell county sheriffs how to do their jobs. That's what the county's voters and courts are supposed to do.

When the founding fathers established this nation, the idea was for the federal government to take a small role. They were to establish and maintain a military, if I understand correctly, and to back up the individual states when needed. The federal government was never established to boss around counties, cities, or individuals. This type of thinking - that the feds are the big bosses - has a lot to do with what's very wrong with the current administration, and the resulting growing disagreement with them all over America..

I guess the sheriff is a admirer of Lou Dobbs. Where did this guy get all this power from that he can tell the Federal Gov. to go to hell. But he will get a lot of support from the GOP right wing.

steve   October 19th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Hello Rick . Iam a latino here in az , Joe Arpaio and his deputys
are breaking the law every day here in maricopa county they
are abusive and do raids on legal residents and demand and ask
for their legal status of natrual born people . Joe Arpaio and his
deputys are nothing more than thugs in maricopa county who
do not regard anybodys rights . but right now if your brown in
maricopa county be carefull even if you are born in the usa
this is been going on for years now and needs to be brought to
the light and to the country and the feds

Philly Diva   October 19th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

How dare you compare Sheriff Arpio to that fascist Bull Connor? Were you living in the U.S.A. during Connor's reign? I was. How many American flags did Arpio and his men snatch from the hands of children? Show your viewers film of Arpio setting dogs and hoses on women and children. Your bias is understandable, but not newsworthy.

bossfan   October 19th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

You are what is known as a PINHEAD!!!!

nick   October 19th, 2009 3:58 pm ET

What part of " illegally" do you not under stand. rick you need to try to study the law before you try inforce it on your so called new report. a frist year law student know more about this than you do.

Paul   October 19th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

If you and the sheriff were dropped into a blender and reconstituted there would be one rationale person

Denise   October 19th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

How ridiculous are your actions. Backed by the Clinton News Network, you whip up tension between races and regions. Railing against one of the few individuals whom actually takes our immigration laws seriously. You sit atop your lofty throne flapping at the mouth in splendid acorn fashion. Nothing short of the rainbow coalition's operation push. Is it too much to ask that we, as Americans our laws enforced. I read a comment on your blog of how America is less the land of opportunity these days. Can we not all see the direct links that attribute to this very true statement. Why do you not use your situation do something more positive on this front. Push for legal immigration. Stop the flow over the boarder and there by stop what today, still amounts to slavery. If immigrants wish to speed up their ability to be here in the US, might I suggest a commitment to the US. Join one of the branches of the armed forces and earn the privilege. You speak of Sheriff Joe needing his tv time and yet request his presence. You need him for your ratings as you do nothing productive. Your face is on daily for little more than CNN needs the illegal immigrant base and sympathizers to prop it's loss of viewership. Today, you have lost another.

I find it amazing that this country can be so outraged about "Balloon Boy Hoax" and yet continue to support a President and his administration when the same basic facts have come to light. A fraud has been perpetrated against the citizens. We were all led to believe something that fell far short of the truth. Many of us changed our vote to favor this President. We were lied to. Now our sons and daughters sit in the Middle East waiting for hell to freeze over before this clown and his lemmings support the men and women who provide us the ability to bitch and complain of any of these fronts.

rory   October 19th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

Why are you so against a sherriff doing his job? What part of illeagle dont you get?

Linda Williams   October 19th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

I don't know what false statement Rick made about Rush, but there are other racist statements that he has made that would cook his goose. Rick should not have apologized to this idiot. He is not worth the time or trouble. Don't be angry with the NFL, they didn't drop him. His partners did. I guess things got too hot for them. I'm sure that there are racists owners in the NFL, NBA, MLB and other sports, but they are not dumb enough to be on live TV spewing hate and dividing the country. Maybe Rush needs to be checked to see if he is still on those drugs. Anyone in their right mind that would like to be part owner of any team would think twice about what they say, even if is free-speech.

martha   October 19th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

I think you are a lousy reporter. You would have checked anything else, and I believe everyone knows it. That whole episode only showed how prejudiced the liberals truly are.

Old_sailor   October 19th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

:He Rick;
What part of the word ILLEGAL to you have trouble understanding ?

Hey Rick, are you here Illegally and thats why you have such a p;roblem with sheriff Joe.

Just had to ask.

IM4NY   October 19th, 2009 6:30 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh is one of the most dangerous toxins in the USA today. His brainwashing tactics are much like those of "Tokyo Rose". She was before our time but I'm quite sure that you know who she was. He is an insulting, name calling, loud mouthed, rude, crude, divisive individual. As an "entertainer" he makes millions of dollars to behave badly . Still, one cannot excuse an American who inspires so much hate and division even though he is paid handsomely to do so. "United we stand; divided we fall." This doesn't mean that we always have to agree with one another but we shouldn't to loose our civility in our discussions.

TkCoach   October 19th, 2009 6:33 pm ET

I just listened to your rude and bias interview of the Sheriff. I believe you let you ethic bias over run you emotion and let it blind you from the fact of what is legal and what is not. I say one comment where one poster stated the Sheriff is anti-mexican. Well we should all be pro-American first. This is not Mexico no matter how hard people like you and the government are trying to make it the new Mexico.

First you called the Sheriff's methods unconstitutional, was violating their rights and his actions were llegal. Also, you said it was the government, most notably "ICE" made those allegations when you interview them. However, when you replayed part of the interview the representative from "ICE" made no such statements. What the Assistant Director said on you play back was:

He felt the sweeps were not consistent with "ICE's" priorities as an agency which is to identify and remove dangerous criminals from the aliens from AZ. The ICE Assistant Director went of to say what the Sheriff was doing was wrong because he felt his sweeps were overbroad and do not have a particular focus or priority on criminal offenders and does it in a way that is not marked by cooperation and coordination of the communities he serves.

Oh really, I did not hear him say the work illegal or Bull Conner or Gestapo tactics. I believe those were your words only! If you are here illegally you are a criminal and have broken the law. Quit playing games. If you had me on your show and kept interrupting me and kept that smirk on your face I would have slapped you silly!

Jim Sparks   October 19th, 2009 6:57 pm ET

Mr Sanches
Do you believe that enforcing the laws passed by our congress is a good thing for everyone envoleved. Then why can't you understand the first word in illeagal alien? Is it right for these people to taken advatage of by the smuglers, you don't say athing about that, or how many are left in the desert to die, or how many women are raped or sold into slavery for sub par wages even to the companies that are American owned. We can protect those who imigrate leagally to this counry under the over two hundred legal ways we currently have. These people are poor yes, these people are desperate. But please be fair and ballanced in your reporting and understand I know of no one who wants these people harmed in anyway much less abused and ripped of by the losers who hire them. Please look at the other end also, illeagals are abused from the very first to the very last by everone involved in their TRAFFICING!

Blair   October 19th, 2009 7:09 pm ET

Your irresponsible in your reporting – you cost a man possibly millions of dollars and a shot at fulfilling his dream of owning an NFL team. It is really sad that the left wing liberals are so jealous of the wealth that the republicans have and the drive that you find in conservative based people. It is always funny to me how liberals always have so much time to be active in their party – the reason why is because half of them do not have jobs and the other half work for union jobs or the govt. When are all you liberal slobs going to realize that without the republicans taxes and businesses paying the tax load you free loaders would not have jobs, unions, or sweet govt. gigs. All Republicans should shut down their businesses for a year and go on unemployment and see how the Obama administration would like – No tax money to spend OH NO! Get a real job you losers!

Lee   October 19th, 2009 7:17 pm ET

The sheriff and all law enforcement are not doing enough to deal with removing illegals. You should pack your butt up and move south of the border.

Juanita Harris   October 19th, 2009 7:36 pm ET

I support Sheriff Joe. I am one of those who had to wait in line for years for a visa in order to enter this great Country legally in 1955, then 5 years before i could become a citizen, for which I am truly thankful. Let's support the people who are waiting in line to become immigrants.

Juanita Harris   October 19th, 2009 7:57 pm ET

A question: Why on earth would the following people bother to come on your newscast and talk to you. You say, "C'mon...what are you afraid of? " Hah, what chutzpah!!!!!!!!! I don't think they are afraid to include you in their busy lives, Rick – they just don't know who you are and why they should present themselves to you. GOSH!

This is not racist statement and sheriff Joe Arpio is not a racist. The people in ARIZONA have been begging for help for years when it comes to illegal immigration, these people coming across the boarder have been praying on the citizens for years and thanks to the two parties that have ran this country for the last thirty years its gotten a lot more dangerous. Why dont you run a series on the victims of illegal immigration, the ones all across this country that have had there lives torn apart by these people. Go and call it it racist, that an easy out for ignoring whats really been taking place here. Your statements to me sound racist. You wonder why healthcare costs so much in this country, well look south and there is your answer. It is a proven fact wether you like it or not. Just how many amnesties do we have o have here. One every five years or so. I live in Aurora Colo.. We had a vary tragic death of a little boy and two women at a soda shop, thanks to an illegal on drugs and alcohol who had, had no drivers license and yet killed these people with a car he should not have had access to. The little boy was five.

mary williams   October 19th, 2009 9:06 pm ET

Hello Rick,You don't like for anybody to check and see if the people
that come into this Courtry Illegal.
If they had ,a young Lady in Hannibal,Missouri would still be alive.
An Illegal killed her and male friend .
I say if they or anybody that don't respect and abide by the Law they can always leave the Border is always open 24/7
We don't have laws anymore, just mouth piece that talk and do Nothing.
I will back Joe Arpaio anytime.
Thanks for listen,Mary

J.R.   October 19th, 2009 9:34 pm ET

Rick,

My grandson is Hispanic and I am not racist but the illegal alien problem is am major one. Anyone who is here illegally should be rounded up and sent back to where they came from. Our social services have been paying for several of them for several years and now our cities are operating in the red. Illegals have been working in jobs with stolen social security cards, these jobs would be easily filled by legal residents. ICE and Janet need to do more to take care of the problem, they are NOT doing enough. They worry too much about special interests. When laws are broken they it is good to have someone like Sheriff Joe doing something about it. He isn't doing anything wrong.

Juanita Harris   October 19th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Linda Williams says, "I don't know what false statement Rick made about Rush, but there are other racist statements that he has made that would cook his goose."

FOX NEWS IS KICKING YOUR BUTT IN ALL TIME ZONES, YOU GUYS LIKE TO BE THE NEWS INSTEAD REPORTING THE NEWS AND THIS IS WHY YOU ARE GETTING YOUR BUTT HANDED TO YOU.

Eric Orner   October 19th, 2009 11:47 pm ET

Rick,

I was very impressed with your cool-headed, respectful but ultimately very tough questioning of the Maricopa County sheriff. First time you've ever reminded me of Edward R. Murrow. Keep up the good work.

Chad   October 20th, 2009 1:35 am ET

You gotta be kidding Rick. You were mad that the Sheriff is doing a good job getting illegal aliens out of the United States. I don't care how he does it, they don't belong here unless they go threw the proper procedure. Besides, if your NOT A CITIZEN the rights of our country don't apply to you.

Irene   October 20th, 2009 2:21 am ET

What do you mean "he's rounding them up anyway?" Just because our lawmakers don't want our law enforcement officers to obey the law? We need Joe as head of Homeland Security – we love you Joe – wish our Congress was protecting us like you are – they can't even enforce the law or close the borders? They want us to become Mexamerica? The most we can hope for is that CNN will soon become totally Spanish speaking so those like Rick Sanchez they can't spew more nonsense in English! Ricky – they could use a gringo in Mexico – perhaps you should consider a job relocation?

D P H   October 20th, 2009 2:34 am ET

Why are you the typical jerk?.May watch you to confirm this. never heard of you before the Arizona Sheriff thing. That was the worst interview I've seen in a while. Talk about a stunt to get more viewers. Grill the Sheriff. Are you a news journalist or a tabloid hype. CNN is my trusted home page, may change that.

DC   October 20th, 2009 6:21 am ET

We need more people like Joe Arpaio to cleanse America of this Latin Mexican cancer. By the way isn't Rick Sanchez a Mexican? Is he here illegally? Remember if the Mexicans aren't nice call ICE!
Remeber it's not illegal to discriminate against illegals.

Puttintain   October 20th, 2009 6:27 am ET

Rick Sanchez is a ridiculous little man!

John Roberts   October 20th, 2009 7:12 am ET

Having done your dirty work in passing along a lie that was effective in denying Mr. Limbaugh from minority ownership in the NFL you now post an apology. Is this apology supposed to make things OK now? You must think you are so clever in abetting this fraud yet distancing yourself from it after it had its desired effect. Read some history, sir. You have joined a gallery of rogues. I am sure your family is proud of you.

Jake de Cordova   October 20th, 2009 9:00 am ET

Re: the quote attributed to Rush Limbaugh where he supposededly said that slavery was a good thing.

Thanks for admitting your mistake, but you should have checked the supposed quote. Rush is out there and in your face, but not prejudiced.

Would you have reported a story that Obama's Communications Director Anita Dunn statement that Mao Zedong was one of her two favorite philosophers? Some how I think not.

Cousin Art   October 20th, 2009 9:55 am ET

"One of the quotes"? The whole thing was BS. Keep apologizing, Rick, and maybe, just maybe you won't get sued. Maybe you could redeem yourself, though. It seems that the quotes you and others used, were traced to a blogger and then to a law firm with ties to the White House. Is that hot enough to get your journalistic juices going? Or is the posibility of a president trying to bring down a talk show host interesting only if the president is Republican? Or the talk coming out of the White House that Fox News is not a news outlet? How would you feel if if was done to CNN?

Richard Thomas   October 20th, 2009 10:53 am ET

Lay off the sheriff Rick. I wish more lawman would follow his lead. What does the U.S. constitution have to do with anything involving ILLEGAL imigrantes. Key word here is ILLEGAL. Has ILLEGAL lost it's meaning somehow?

Rich

Liliana Orozco   October 20th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

criminals never feel better before, specially if they can show a power badge.

clooch   October 20th, 2009 5:23 pm ET

Rick,

I've never heard of you before you deliberately ran with the fake Rush Limbaugh quote for which you will now be infamous. I wonder if you only did this for cheap ratings and hits on your webpage/blog? I suppose that is plausible given the horrible ratings of both your show and CNN.

On the other hand, it could also be that you chose to state something completely false about Rush Limbaugh because you do not see the world the same way he does, disagree with his politics or simply are jealous of his success.

Regardless of your motivation, isn't your behavior precisely what David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel were spouting off about on the weekend "news" shows? They both, along with Chaiman Mao-loving Anita Dunn, offered up opinions that Fox News is not a news station but rather a network offering only their opinions on any given issue. I believe it was Mr. Axelrod who stated that CNN wasn't like Fox and should not treat Fox as an equal.

Where would your actions fit in along those lines I wonder? Maybe you were sucessful in what you set out to do: You are now "that guy that made those false statements about Rush Limbaugh that partially cost him the opportunity to own a minority interest in the worst team in the NFL". Two thumbs up Rick. Good job...

Nancy V   October 20th, 2009 6:36 pm ET

Congratulattions!!! You made Seriff Joe look like the idiot he is. I live in Maricopa county and we don't all love the sheriff. You can depend on an article about this joker everyday in the local newspaper. Nobody has been able to stop this guy and someone needs to. How ignorant can someone be to say on national television that they know who is an illegal by the way they speak and they way they dress. My mother was born in this counrty and based on the way the sherrif's office determines if someone is an illegal, my mother would be arrested. I hope with all this on CNN someone finally does something about him.

William H. White   October 21st, 2009 9:38 am ET

Well, if Mr. Sanchez is going to apologize when he makes a mistake, he needs to apologize for his apology. In particular I wait for an apology for Mr. Sanchez's last sentence: "I feel it is important to hold folks accountable when they make mistakes, and that should include myself [sic] and my team."

Is it too much to expect broadcasters to know the King's English? And, what could be more fundamental than the first-person singular personal pronoun? Personal pronouns come in three cases: the subjective case, the objective case, and the intensive/reflective case. In the first person singular the personal pronoun is expressed as, anyone??.... class???.... anyone???? Me, Myself, or I. (You know this. Tell me you know this....)

The subjective case for personal pronouns is used when that pronoun is the subject of the sentence and the objective case is used when the pronoun is the object of the sentence. (You know this. TELL me you know this!!!....) For the singular first person pronoun the subjective case is, of course, "I" and the the objective case "me".

One uses "myself" under two – and ONLY two circumstances. The first is the intensive case. Example: I, myself, think Rush Limbaugh is a fine fellow. The other case is the reflexive case. Example: I try not to embarrass myself by using "myself" when I should use "me".

Now, take a look again at Mr. Sanchez's sentence: "I feel it is important to hold folks accountable when they make mistakes, and that should include myself [sic] and my team." Mr. Sanchez got the "I" part correct, but when he again uses the first person singular pronoun, "... that should include myself [sic]" the pronoun clearly is an object (of the verb include), clearly is not being used in an intensive or reflexive fashion. Mr. Sanchez SHOULD have said "... that should include me..."

THIS IS BASIC ENGLISH GRAMMAR!!! Is it asking too much to expect on-air personalities to have at least a passing understanding of the King's English? Arggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

David Stevens   October 21st, 2009 10:50 am ET

Maybe Rush should have a shrink explain why people listen to CNN and the whole concept of cognative disonance.

Cut to the chase CNN, the reason people listen
to Rush is so simple cnn refuses to recognize it, ready,
Rush tells the truth.

Betty from Iowa   October 21st, 2009 12:01 pm ET

I can't believe people are still writing on this blog about Rush L.
He has truly brain-washed many. Just watching him jump up and down in his seat and slobber all over himself, is enough for me. Whew!!

Jesse   October 21st, 2009 2:09 pm ET

Rick, here's a good one for you. Two kids walking home from school in Humble, Texas were robbed at gunpoint by a ski-masked man in a black Dodge. Their school sachels were stolen. Police are looking for leads to try to apprehend the suspect. The twist is, in my opinion, that the real thieves robbing our young children are the large banks(BoA, Wells Fargo, Chase and others), auto makers, and our own congress. Why not another thief? What a story. Should not be hard to apprehend these thieves.

Darryl Fisher   October 22nd, 2009 9:35 am ET

Hey Rick, Do everyone a favor and report the news! No cares about your opinion! Have a great day. P.S. Hope Rush gets your house when he sues your butt!!!!!!!!!!!!

Donald in CA   October 22nd, 2009 3:11 pm ET

Rick, at least you made a correction about the unconfirmed comment attributed to Rush Limbaugh. Maybe Rush will take a hint and stop the lying about people he disagrees with. I have no sympathy for Rush. Let his defenders continue to be his door mat.

Juanita Harris   October 23rd, 2009 12:30 am ET

Donald, WHAT LIES? Please give examples plus sources.

Juanita Harris   October 23rd, 2009 12:32 am ET

PoliticoMike, what does Fox News have to say sorry about? Oh, you mean for calling a spade a spade. Yeah, the truth hurts, huh?

Juanita Harris   October 23rd, 2009 12:34 am ET

Iowa Betty, No Rush fans are not brainwashed like you people. We like Rush because he agrees with us. Get it?

Juanita Harris   October 23rd, 2009 12:42 am ET

No, the government-run media and the dem politicians are not little chickens, as you called them. They are little mischief makers who bear false witness against someone who makes them feel threatened, i.e. telling the truth about them. For instance, Rush being of the opinion that when a government takes over EVERYTHING, that government is socialist. I totally agree.

JOAN HENNESSY   October 23rd, 2009 7:22 pm ET

WOW Rick Sanchez made a mistake, and he apologised for it, now you people who love to get on a bandwagon want to crucify him. What is wrong with you people why do you want to kick a man when he makes a mistake....HELLO he's sorry ..

Jim in San Diego   October 24th, 2009 1:19 am ET

Wow what a great "journalist". Spread damaging lies about somebody without verifying, then after the damage is done take the high road and apologize for being a bad journalist. You've failed your profession, Rick, and in the end it is YOUR credibility that will take the hit.

Juanita Harris   October 24th, 2009 3:03 am ET

Joan Hennessy, HELLO, Sanchez is sorry he got caught trying to crucify Rush Limbaugh. What's wrong with YOU?

Juanita Harris   October 24th, 2009 3:07 am ET

Rick, at least you print the comments calling you on what you did, unlike some of your fellow so-called journalists who would not.

pinokeeoh   October 24th, 2009 11:29 am ET

If someday CNN starts being a real news station and reporting objectively instead of being an administation lackey your ratings might improve. One thing to note, people today are hungry for honesty. That's like practicing investigative journalism across a broad spectrum. If you ever actually begin to hold this administration accountable I might become a viewer. Just curious, what has the Bama administration promised you to get you roll over on your back? I grew up in Chicago and I've seen where this one goes, more corruption, less efficiency, higher taxes, more people screwed over by a government accountable to no one.

Jim   October 24th, 2009 6:33 pm ET

Rick,

What a heartfelt "retraction?" I'm sure you have PERSONALLY appologized to Rush???

By the way..... Did you hold Warren Ballentine "accountable" when he told Juan williams (a black man, PBS) to "GO BACK TO THE PORCH," when Juan was playing "devil's advocate" in defending Rush Limbaugh?????? Rush is a "blowhard" conservative radio talk show host, BUT a RACIST he is not!!!!!!!

Hold liberals "accountable" too??????

INTRODUCTION

What makes me write this book is, simply, one of my childhood dreams. It could not be just a fairy tale because I wanted something lively, something that people would like and with which they would associate.

I grew up in New York City where I met a character who lived in much need and it is something I can testify, for even up to this day, he has been a loyal companion. This individual has influenced my life in such a way that I can even say that he is miraculous because he had so much faith in God.

Let me explain why miraculous. One day, while biking with him and other peers on the Triborough Bridge on our way to Randall’s Island Park, as we began to plunge down the ramp, his brakes snapped and his bicycle hit against the fenders of the Bridge and I saw him in the air. Well, you know what happens when someone crashes a bike against a wall: the biker flies. And he was flying. I thought he would get killed because the fall would have been fatal. I only know that he was drawn back to the Bridge and he thought we had grabbed on to him.

He told his mom what had happened and she said that it had been her prayers; that the angels had been the ones that had grabbed him because whenever he was not beside her she would beg God to care for him and to deliver him from all evil things. That is why I believe him to be a man of faith or plainly miraculous.

His stories are very exciting and, of course, true. I know that many of you are going to identify yourselves with him and that others will be motivated. Even though I am not very eloquent I am committed to write about this personage, for if I did not, a good story would be lost. It is my privilege to proceed with the narration. It is possible that other authors will read and be inspired to write about him, also. His name is rather peculiar, with several meanings, some negative and some positive. Not that he is negative; on the contrary, he is admirable. All his life was about struggling and surviving. He used the negative things for motivation; things others would complain about. I have a lot to say about him. His name is “Centellita”. Dear reader, get ready because Centellita is at large and, maybe, you will discover that there is one deep within you.

I never thought that if I were to write a book, it would be about this character, and less that it would have to do with success. This child has been an inspiration to me all life long and I hope that the readers will be inspired by Centellita, as well. If I have been successful, I owe it to this very special human being that, in all the negative and worse experiences, saw that his future was in his hands and not in the hands of others.

Todd   October 26th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Taking a mid-day twitter poll concerning the public option makes no sense. Most people who are employed (and paying taxes) are at work mid-day. Try the same poll when those who must pay for the public option are available to give their responses. I suspect it will not show the same overwhelming support in the evening.

JR Hall   October 26th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Rick,
Why can't our legislators be fair and reasonable for the American people and forget their partisan bickering and stock portfolios they have rich with insurance company stocks?
The most reasonable approach to health care is to eliminate the anti-trust exemptions for the insurance industry and allow all insurance companies to compete equally in all American states and territories. There should be a public insurance option for all Americans that are for some reason not able to be covered by one of the competitive private insurance companies. Those that are unable to afford the national health insurance should still be able to be covered by the public option.
Each American could be issued a Universal Health Care coverage card with their medical information, such that when they go to their doctor, or any doctor, or an emergency room, valuable time and resources wouldn't be wasted filling out forms and acquiring vital information.
What do you think, Rick?

Stan   October 26th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

Yo Rick the chopper went down from receiving sustained fire while in combat. It had taken more hits that they realized to the power plant.

Smarty Pants   October 26th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

"when those who must pay for the public option"

It's amazing how so many people are not paying attention, yet they offer their opinion. The public option is paid for with premiums paid for by PEOPLE. Now, some people (like those making low wages) will get subsidies from Government to help them pay the premium. So if you want to restate that you think people who don't make much should go through life without healthcare, you should restate your selfish and greedy ways so we all understand you, Taaaaaaahhhhwd.
Then there is the issue of you are already paying their full tab when they show up in Emergency, but then thinking has never been your types strong suit.

It's 65 to 70% in favor, you lose.

Tom Milne   October 26th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

Medicare costs are high because the hospitals are in private hands, where as in other countries thery are controled by government.
The government sets the cost for everything carried out in the hospital. Thiis keeps cost down.

NELSON JEBAMONI   October 26th, 2009 6:28 pm ET

THIS IS ABOUT THE TRAFFIC TICKET ISSUED TO A LATINO LADY

MR.SANCHEZ,
THE SO-CALLED DISCOVERER OF AMERICA NEVER SPOKE ENGLISH AND HE MURDERED HIS HOSTS MERCILESSLY, YET EVERY SRARE IN US HAS PLACES NAMED AFTER HIM. BUT THE POLICE IN CA GAVE TRAFFIC TICKET FOR NOT SPEAKING IN ENGLISH. THIS IS REALLY A TRAGEDY.

Todd   October 26th, 2009 9:41 pm ET

I have seen a few comments about the cost of universal health. The belief enough savings can be recouped to pay for it is a pipe dream. It WILL result in more money out of the working/taxpaying public. The government have had 20 years to get the cost down on medicare and medicaid, and have been unable to reduce costs on a program they have 100% control of. What makes any sensible person believe they will do better with insurance companies which they have limited control of, or, the government program will prove any cheaper than medicare and medicaid. It is time for anyone who didn't score at least a "C" in third grade math to listen to those are very math savvy. Ask people over 40 who have seen how the government manages large projects and programs for a good long time. They will tell a small percentage of government projects have come in at or below the original budget. The public option is a bleeder which no hemostat or clamp will staunch the flow. And to be quite frank, I pay dearly for my insurance; I have no desire to pay for yours as well. Go get a job; even McDonalds offers a health insurance program. It may not be glamorous, but put your money (and effort) where your mouth is. Don't expect me to pick up your slack. The working public has little interest in shouldering even more burden.

Todd   October 26th, 2009 9:52 pm ET

btw Party Smance, I agree people aren't paying attention. They haven't paid attention in history class; they didn't pay attention in math class (because it was too boring). Look at the mess in Mit Romney's home state (they have an equivalent public option there). It has massive cost over-runs with progressing debt. Other states have similar problems where they have put a public option in place. I appreciate the "emotional" part of the argument, but before you cry "greedy", let me ask you, how many homeless starving people have you brought into your home in the last month. They have need too. The simple fact is the world is full of needy people needing help. You can pull them all up, without dragging everyone else down.

Leslie said, "How can anyone be in favor of or opposed to this legislation when we don't know what is in this bill?"

Absolutely!!!!!! This bill is the size of a large book and no one has read it, even most of the dem politicians. Amazing!

Also, Obama was going to put it on the internet for everyone to read. What happened to that?????

Emmanuel   October 26th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Rick.... This is the first time I'm reaching out to you. Reaching out to you to inform you of a grave injustice rendered upon a good and caring mother by Broward County Sheriff and CPT. The behavior of CPT are those that I've seen in movies depicting the Gestapo. The Mother, doing only what naturally any other parent would do, rich or poor, protecting her daughter Rogue against the filth who preys on our children every day in FL, recently the case in Davie, FL, whereby a Father was arrested for beating someone who his son accused of fondling him. Although the accused was beaten badly (in a coma) Davie Police Officers arrested the man. My good friend did not have this option when her Rogue reported that Leo Schenone had hurt her and demonstrated the acts. You would think, like the similar event, they would have arrested Leo or conduct an investigation. In contrast, Cooper City Police and CPT manage to do the opposite. Despite all the signs ranging from schools and constant plea from the mother for help, the solution for CPT was to remove Rogue from her loving mother's arms and placed her with her Father where her accuser Leo resides as well. Compare the actions of Cooper City and CPT in comparison to the actions of the Davie Police Department. A little is suffering because of the lack of competence as public servants to conduct themselves and protect the innocent rather that the criminals.

Help return Rogue home

Dennis,
Where do you get that the insurance companies are the deciders?
Currently DOCTORS and PATIENTS are the deciders. I am an old lady, so I know that doctors and I have made all the decisions through all my illnesses in 15 years (kidney disease, etc., etc., etc.) At Kaiser most of the patients that I saw were Hispanic families, because until this year I lived in Antioch, California where lots of Hispanics live. So we were all in it together, getting better care than in England or Canada. I have a friend in England and family in Canada so I get my info from them and also by doing research, which is a good idea for anyone to do, by the way. People in England and Canada have to wait for months and months for surgery.

In Obamacare the GOVERNMENT will be the deciders.

ralph gagliano   October 27th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Does the apology mean "jury disregard", or that some bias may have slipped out?

Milt   October 27th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

Rick, please come back soon! Some overacting escapee from "Fox Fake News" is in your chair. Someone needs to tell him that his phony "outrage" act really does sound phony and he needs to report the news instead of trying to come off as some Bill O'Reilly wannabe!

Mary Jo   October 27th, 2009 4:19 pm ET

Has anyone even asked if home land security was notified that an airliner was in the air and non-responsive for that amount of time? It seems that that is the most important question here. Isn't the military supposed to be contacted? Or did we forget 911 already. I think if the military weren't the atc should answering the questions... Shouldn't they???

Smarty Pants   October 27th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

Todd says: "how many homeless starving people have you brought into your home in the last month."

I'm Canadian, too cold for homeless here, they are, for the most part looked after. As are the health needs of Canadian, for the most part. I would not trade my paying taxes and the basic needs of Canadians looked after for your greedy system down there. I got mine, now cut my taxes. Greedy. WE CANADIANS ARE IN THIS TOGETHER.

curt   October 27th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

why are illegal immigrants protesting? that is a right reserved ONLY for the lawful, taxpaying citizens of this country. being that they are openly illegal, why were they not deported?

KaZ Akers   October 29th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

In the past I have been told by natives of certain Mexican/Central or South American countries to pronounce their name or the name of their city or their country the way it is pronounced by a native..Chile is pronouced Chee-lay and when I didn't pronouce it that way I was corrected. I am Caucasian and speak fluent French but don't find myself compelled to correct people when they pronounce incorrectly a French saying that has been adopted into English. So I am straddling the fence on the question of Anglicizing Hispanic or Latin American names or words. My French friend Michel pronounces his man MEE shell and that is the way I pronounce it. Not mishell – I respect that he pronounces his name that way and I will do my best to do the same.

Hi Rick, I'm white with ancestors from england etc.. but I was raised in San Jose California and most of my high school was hispanic and that was really normal for me. Then my senior year we moved to Oregon and I think there were only a handful of ethnics in my new school. i never seen so many blondes in one place. The first day I was so afraid I ran into the bathroom and threw up. I just thought that was kind of funny when i look back on it now. i was so used to people being hispanic or black I had culture shock when i moved to Oregon.

Rafael A. Madrigal   October 29th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Rick I am very proud of the work you do. YOu are an excellent role model for other hispanics to follow since you have a natural common sense approach to reason a solution to a problem. It helps that you are not overbearing but a level headed individual that for most of us we understand the point you are trying to get accross. Fox was my number one choice but now I am considering CNN due to your presence, 360 Anderson,, and other great reporters. I find my self watching more CNN news than any other news channel. Keep up the good work Ricardo, I feel you are doing a great shop for the hispanic community. May God bless you.

Andy   October 29th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

Boy, he is damned if he does and damned if he doesnt. The news crew follows him everywhere he goes, so it would be nearly impossible for them not to get any video.

Kapai   October 29th, 2009 3:58 pm ET

Kudos to this prez. this is his way of telling the troops that he is with them thru thick and thin. so if the press videos him with soldiers who are alive why not show him paying his respects to them when they have made the supreme sacrifice.

Rafael A. Madrigal   October 29th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

CNN has become the middle ground for most Ameicans. CNN has a reputation to report the news and not side with the left or the right per say. And that means a lot for the middle class that has the burden to keep this country going no matter what. The middle class needs some one to trust and as for the present CNN seems to be the network to keep close at hand.

Arthur Throckmorton   October 29th, 2009 4:25 pm ET

So NFL legend Bob Griese is your hero and you think the dust-up over the Juan Montoya comment Griese made that “He’s out having a taco” is MEDIA GENERATED, and not a big deal? Do I get that right given your comments on today's show Thursday, October 29, 2009? Please correct me if I'm wrong?

On the other hand, you castigate Rush Limbaugh for comments he NEVER MADE and now all you can say is "We have been unable to independently confirm that quote."

Hey Ricky, buddy, how about stepping up to the plate and admitting you WERE WRONG, that Rush Limbaugh never said the things you "quoted" and that it was all MEDIA GENERATED. Your participation in the media crucifixion resulted in Mr. Limbaugh's exclusion in attempting to exercise his free enterprise right to become a part owner of a football team.

I'll bet your other football commentator hero is Keith Olbermann. Your just as objective and disingenuous with your "corrections." Nice job Ricky!

Betty from Iowa   October 29th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh says things all the time that are off the wall. Then he just squirms out of it. I have never heard him apoligize to anyone.

Juanita Harris   October 30th, 2009 1:10 am ET

What does Rush have to apologize for?

Martha Meza -Simmons   November 13th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

Que pasa with "balloon boy's" mom? The reason that was mentioned was so the family would not be torn apart. Why are only Mexican families being torn apart by deportation? There are many Mexican families w/o criminal records & get deported. As well as that young Argentinian on your show yesterday. Orale!

As long as health care is motivated strictly by profit, health care costs will continue to rise and quality of care will drop to the lowest level providers can get away with.

As long as the wealthiest corporations continue to manipulate lawmakers (i.e. generating legislation that works in their favor at the expense of the average American), there will be no meaningful health care reform.

While I am extremely concerned about pressure to rush into a health care solution, it is frustrating and embarrassing to watch the Republican party shout "NO" to every Democratic suggestion. My two year old is more sensible. At a time when this country has so many important problems to solve, the Republicans have a responsibility to contribute constructively.

The injury to Brown may spell disaster. Ricky might be too old to be a full time back. Henne better learn to make some plays fast. They have a solid defense, but they can not do it on their own. They definitly have their work cut out for them.
