What is this, a "Blackface Renaissance"?

Singers and dancers in blackface on Australian television made news when it offended visiting Harry Connick Jr. Otherwise we might have never known of it. By the way, the show's host apologized.

Today, we saw a white model in the French issue of Vogue magazine painted black. C'mon...really?

We want to know from you: is this offensive, or is every form of artistic expression open for interpretation?

Don Lemon sat in for Rick Sanchez this day, and asked that very question of the editor of Jezebel.com.

Watch the clip. Leave a comment.

Don Lemon appears to be interested in very little more than the color of people's skin. He takes any available occasion to bring it up, and for some strange reason thinks it makes for intelligent conversation. It doesn't, and it's immature. There's a world out there, Don, get a life.

Susan   October 15th, 2009 11:31 am ET

Performing in "blackface" is demeaning and insulting. It's reminiscent of minstrel shows.

Mac   October 15th, 2009 11:41 am ET

Tasteless. If we would ignore stunts like this instead of broadcasting them, they wouldn't be an issue.

David   October 15th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

I agree with Allahdad, nobody brought it up when they put out the movie White Chicks, when the Wayan brothers dressed up as white women. Are whites supposed to find this offensive too? Just seems like blacks get offended way too easily, and can`t take these acts for what they are, comedy. I thought the dude with white face on acting like Michael Jackson was pretty funny. As far as the Vogue deal, I thought the woman looked stupid, plus a little high, not offensive, but take it as art or offensive or however you want to.

mike   October 15th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

hey rick, a large net suspended btwn two helicopters could bring the child down safely and much sooner, he has to be suffering at those cold temps.

susan beyke   October 15th, 2009 3:08 pm ET

i am no expert so i do not know if this can be done with this poor 6 year old. would it be possible to have several parachuters jumped out high enough to cattch the ballon and help bring it down. my prayers are with the family and that boy thank you

Naghib Sumar   October 15th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Send a team of parachutes to save the boy

jim   October 15th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

in order to get the boy in ballon down you must spray water on mylar this is a florist trick.

DJ in Denver   October 15th, 2009 3:39 pm ET

Please blog the stuff you are talking about. The kid in the balloon story is great where is it?
I wish I was in the balloon.

Simone   October 15th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Isn't it possible that the little boy undid the balloon and got scared that he would be punished so he ran and hid? That is what my mom says and seeing that I use to be that small, it makes a lot of sense.

holmes   October 15th, 2009 3:58 pm ET

....Dude, all you guys probably need to look at when you're searching the six year old boy is the garage! ...He's probably scared to death and hiding from his dad!!!

Makus   October 16th, 2009 1:07 pm ET

Waiting for the Change?

If the Obama Administration is not willing to stop big business from controlling the members of Congress through financial contributions, then there will be no major changes in our government to restore prosperity to the working class. One good example of this principle is our current health care insurance system that has failed the working class, and has earned huge profits for the HMOs, but HMOs are still included in health care reform proposals. Other major issues controlled by big business are replacing American labor with cheaper foreign labor, unfair trade agreements, lack of regulation of businesses and illegal immigration.

CubanMom   October 16th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

It is offensive, this is not the 19th century people know better! How would people feel about some joke being doing on an invalid?

We all have a sense of humor, but to color your face black and make a joke about it, is just poor taste.

Marcus Greensboro, NC   October 16th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

It is offensive, and to add it was not just her face. If you look at all of the pictures their whole bodies were airbrushed. Italian Vogue used black models and I am lost on why French Vogue did not do the same if they wanted women of color. Same company, but clearly different ideas on taste.

Rob   October 16th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

Whats so offensive? I got called a cracker on a daily basis by african Americans while serving in the Navy and not even an eye was blinked for those comments! Wheres the level and fair playing field there Rick? Whats good for one should be good for another no matter what color they are !

Mike   October 16th, 2009 6:36 pm ET

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. I could understand people being offended by an obvious INSULT, but I'm sorry – I don't see how this model being made up to appear dark-skinned would be interpreted as such, anymore than I would see Tyra Banks' make-up and long, straight, flowing, BLONDE hair extensions as some sort of insult to white women.

I've seen fantasy images of both white and black women in green body make-up. Is that offensive? Is there some RULE that says models and performers are free to paint themselves any color of the rainbow except BROWN?

When Eddie Murphy or the Wayans brothers were made up to appear white, I didn't see anything hateful in that either. Of course, if I was a WHINER, looking to be offended, I suppose I could object to them.

phil ws   October 16th, 2009 6:48 pm ET

Amb. Keyes was given the stink-finger by dems repubs and the press. we got what we deserve. those who use the constitution for toilet tissue... too bad the innocent few must suffer (temporarily) along with the hedonist boobs and their predatory leaders

Jake   October 16th, 2009 7:57 pm ET

Rick you are standing in for Ms. Brown this Friday evening and have expressed concern about the Arizona Sweat Lodge. My understanding is that they are a great place to "dry out".

Allison   October 16th, 2009 8:44 pm ET

Rick Sanchez cannot seriously believe that Americans want to spend time speculating about a kid in a balloon. Speaking of wasting time! Get over it and get on to news. Spare me the outrage.

Scott Armstrong   October 16th, 2009 9:30 pm ET

I dont have a problem with the coloring, people all the time wear costumes to convey a different message of who they really are.
The Big problem I have is when I comment on AOL, very often what I share doesnt get posted, now that bothers me.

I think AOL just as CNN needs to be open, and equal.
I want to see a room for just whites, a beauty contest for just whites, do you see what Im saying. I really dont care if there is a just white, but it is time for Americans with Brown, their not Black SKIN to stop the crap, there is no one alive today that owned slaves, and if you are an American, then drop the afro stuff, an AMERICAN IS AN AMERICAN!

VAN   October 16th, 2009 9:38 pm ET

I AM WHITE AND I DON'T GIVE A S–T IF A NEGRO PAINTS HIS ASS OR HIS FACE WHITE, STOP THIS KIND OF TALK AND THERE IS NO PROBLEM THERE!!!

VAN   October 16th, 2009 9:41 pm ET

I THINK SHE LOOKS STUPID, NOT FUNNY!

Scott Armstrong   October 16th, 2009 9:53 pm ET

One additional comment if I may, as long as there is people like KAMAU KAMBON making speeches, we will never see good relations.
I suggest that everyone that reads this, put Kamau Kambon into your web browser and pull him up, listen to him, then tell me whats wrong with this picture?

Wray Jolley   October 16th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

I wonder if there were complaints when white guys wore blackface playing the Moor in the play or opera, Othello or Otello. I don't recall any fusses about it demeaning an ethnic group.

CaptVitto   October 16th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

First off.....harry Connick Jr. should stick to playing the piano and singing.
I don't find the art of "blackface" offensive.....However that art along with the Mistrel Show is long gone.....However if someone has the bad taste to induldge....then so be it....! This is still America....and as of now we have not lost the 1st amendment..... :-)

Don Riley   October 17th, 2009 12:42 am ET

Why in the world would it offend anybody; and Harry Connick jr??? He's white. Where is the offense to him [I do not think there is offense to anyone!!!]
Although some will throw the race card at everything and everyone!

TimO   October 17th, 2009 10:51 am ET

But it is OK for the Wayan brothers to impersonate white trash.

Jim P.   October 17th, 2009 10:52 am ET

What difference does it make. I'm white, but it would not offend me if a blacke person painted himself white. The majority of the people, no matter what their skin color, I'm sure, want to live in peace, but there is always those few who have to keep stirring up trouble. People are not going to stop, until they have not only this nation, but the world in such turmoil, that there will be a nation & or world wide race war, with millions being killed, because somebody got offended.

USMC Col   October 17th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

This is blatent racism. Pathetic . An apology to people of color should be made.

Dump Thing To Do   October 18th, 2009 4:21 am ET

There are so many positive good things to broadcast. To pick ignorances only show ones mentality and own character for disrespect of race. What do it profit CNN to show this? What good will it bring out. It is certainly not "Educational." If this model want to be stupid, let her be stupid by herself. If this model is not satisfied with the color of her own skin, then let her waddle in her own mud. To present or project racism associated with CNN and ignorant behavior reflects the view points of how CNN do business.

Claire McMurray   October 18th, 2009 5:44 pm ET

I'm not black, but I am fat, and fat people do get insults (as I expect black people still do, though only from a minority of Americans). So if Vogue hired a thin model and made her look fat, I'd be happy if they put her in nice clothes I thought looked good on her. I'd be insulted if the photo made her look like a clown or a sloppy dresser. It's interesting that the "black" picture shows her wearing black & white twisted together.

janette tx   October 18th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

Rick,I never thought a kid was in there, he would have been thrown
around quite a bit causing some type of visible bulging that didn't
seem to occur. And where was the frantic phone call from the parents
to authorities???

A. Smith   October 18th, 2009 7:55 pm ET

Australia officially recognizes its indigenous population. Australia officially has a federal indigenous peoples holiday. It is very wrong to paint Australians as bigoted-racist people.

America does not even officially recognize its indigenous population, there is no official Native America day holiday. Until the late 1970's, it was federally against the law to teach Native American customs in any public schools!!! There is no official request of forgiveness for the brutal genocide of some THREE MILLION native Americans during the 1800's in America.

It is very wrong to think that America has anything to teach Australians for in regards to the treatment and recognition of indigenous populations.

The skit appears to be blatant racism and pathetic. However the Australian people as a whole denounce such racism wholeheartedly and match their words with official actions.

Give me a break. Now we have to be sooo careful because we have a black, muslim president? But there was nothning wrong with having several seasons of a show with Erkel on it that thrived on racism. This is nothing but jive-ass protesting.

Brian   October 19th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Nobody seems too upset Michael Jackson went surgically white faced. Hypocrisy knows no bounds.

chuck   October 19th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

Just another example of a no talent a@@#ole trying to grab attention.

Martin in Shoreline, WA   October 19th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

Why does CNN incessantly try to create hatred and division where there is none? It is as if you are intentionally trying to divide this nation. You see racism in swimming pools, but you don't see it when Al Sharpton tries to ruin the career of every white man who offends him. Which is pretty much every white man in America.

You do the same thing with false accusations of sexism. I saw your segment on an editorial cartoon concerning hatred toward female politicians. What are we, Muslim now? Cartoons are a reason to get upset? It is absurd. Hillary Clinton whines about sexism, while running around saying she can do anything better than a man. We also oppose Sotomayor due to her claims of inherent superiority. Then we are demonized as Nazis and misogynists for pointing out their Aryan similarities.

The only people who criticize women for their appearance, are other women. Then, of course, they claim it is men who objectify women. Palin is hated for the same reason Republicans are hated: They are Bible-thumping imbeciles who lie on a nearly constant basis. If there is any added venom due to gender, it is because women have created the illusion that they are kind and gentle. We expect them to be sugar and spice, and everything nice. In truth, women are every bit as vile as men. Feminists are offended by this statement of truth. I tell them they are my equal, and feminists feel insulted. Who hates whom?

Humans are predators at the top of the food chain. Just because women do not have to gut Wilbur for breakfast anymore, doesn't mean they won't start wars and kill. Hillary threatened to obliterate Iran, for crying out loud. The way women worship themselves in America is obscene. They claim to be superior parents. Disregard the fact that the vast majority of criminals come from single mother homes.

People hate Hillary and Pelosi because they wish to mandate or tax every personal choice you can imagine. Everything from how we raise our children, to what we choose to ingest. I am a registered Democrat, and I cannot stand these two women. And it has nothing to do with their gender. Obama is losing my support because he also wishes to mandate. Mandates are the tool of dictators. These clowns deserve to be hated, just as Saddam Hussein deserved it. A dictator is a dictator. Whether or not they possess breasts or brown skin, is irrelevant. Anyone who believes differently, is a racist and/or a sexist.

IM4NY   October 19th, 2009 11:32 pm ET

If this is such a big deal then dying or bleaching one's hair another color would be a big deal too. What's the problem? Black is beautiful and so is white and brown and yellow too. Lighten up folks; this is merely an artistic expression.

John Wynne   October 20th, 2009 9:05 pm ET

Prez 0 is doing a pretty good job at that.

Daniel Martin   October 22nd, 2009 9:53 am ET

People, grow up already and quite throwing this race crap into the mix. When 2 black guys did a movie called white chicks and painted their faces white, did any of us white folks bitch and moan about it? You, the media, causes this stir and should be embarrassed and reprimanded for stirring the pot. Let it go. DL

Denroy   October 22nd, 2009 11:15 am ET

Hi Rick,

Hoping all is well.

Rick, it's all about the numbers (Marketing), if one would take the time to look around us, we will see that numbers affect us. If you have one dollar bill and a thiousand bill, which is more important? At one time in America glorious history people of colour were SOLD, today people of colour SELLS and more important they BUY and have become the major consumers. When you blend Afro and the Latina population, it;s all about numbers combined with fear.

Respect,

Denroy

I tip my hat to all the folks on here who are outraged at this poor excuse for art.
