re: Gates and Obama -Come on. Someone has to stand up for the racial problems still going on. I am white but have seen lots of bad behaviour by the police to blacks. It is shameful and the officer's statement that he will never apologize (this is the guy who trains to stop this kind of thing) as he is right. Right or wrong Mr. Gates was arrested for nothing more than going into his own house. Isn't it refreshing to have a president that will talk about these issues and do his best for us to see both sides? Who do these people have to stand up for them-certainly not the Republican party members and not the cops in most cases. This arrest was totally racially motivated.

michael armstrong sr.   July 24th, 2009 5:57 pm ET

That was boring rick but educational you should have bought Roland Martin with you thats pretty cool watching you to guys fight .

Marjorie Stephens   July 24th, 2009 6:35 pm ET

Do we have to spend he next 3 1/2 years listening to apologies, broken promises, delays, poor choice of woeds, etc,? I've had enough already.!

Rick, thanks for taking the time to show the visual of CNN in New York. Love the view...

Anita Moore   July 24th, 2009 8:13 pm ET

Its really unfortunate that CNN and you Rick have taken the cops side. I haven't heard you report on Mr. Gates side of the issue or the young lady who reported earlier on Wolfs show that the cops had no choice but to drop the charges. Sorry to say, its what I expect from the media and the world when it comes to African American.

Ria   July 24th, 2009 8:27 pm ET

Hey Rick
I don't understand why you guys keep on discussing the matter Black and white. And i think you know this better there is a racism in this country .Even in preschools i saw that bcoz my daughter is in pre school. You know sometimes people tells me that "This is American Thing" And when White Republican told that i want my country back what was that and they asking for his Birth caertificate. What do you think its not a racisim. When he presented his BCertififact i was watching Lou Dobb said this does show that he is born here and i think from hospital everybody get the same copy what he presented.
And Keep in mind President is trying to clean Bull's (Bush) mess He have so many things to do .You cann't even believe how stressful is his job . I am not a black neither white I have a brown skin still i wish
I could help President..I believe if you cann't do any good atleast try to avoid any wrong doing
If everybody will try to help President to get the country back on Track How nice it would be instead of criticizing him.
Thanks

frantz   July 24th, 2009 8:41 pm ET

I believed both sides overreacted; however I believe Gates did not have to be arrested. Also, if the officer and the police department really believed the charge of disorderly conduct was right, they would not have drop the charges just so they could make their point.

shaver   July 24th, 2009 8:42 pm ET

OH COME ON Now! I support our policeforce 100%. But arressting someone for breaking into their own home does make them look pretty STUPID. If Professor Gates was arressted for disorderly conduct then this wouldn't have even made the news. Sounds like all parties need to sit down and talk it out.

Beverly Merrick   July 24th, 2009 8:45 pm ET

WHO NEEDS TO BE TAUGHT! Not the THREE P'S

The POLICEMAN was dedicated and fulfillling his duties. He had to do what he had to do.

The DuBois PROFESSOR was fulfilling his life'sgoals of defending his beliefs. He had to do what he had to do.

The PRESIDENT was serving others and fufilling his roles of overall decisionmaker for the country. He had to do what he had to do.

No one was in the wrong. If the POLICEMAN had not carried through his sound training in avoiding racial profiling as a person in that situation, he would have been in the wrong.

No one was in the wrong. If the PROFESSOR had allowed himself to be intimidated after teaching others of the racial profiling, he would have been in the wrong.

No one was in the wrong. If the PRESIDENT had not defended a friend, he would have been in the wrong. If the PRESIDENT had not comforted the policeman on the phone, he would not have shown his strong support of law enforcement.

Then who is in the wrong?

Well, it must be the PROFESSIONAL. Who is that? The journalist. Who cannot see that sometimes in life, even in a nation of laws, situations can happen, can inflame and can cause differences, even when there are three good men who all believe in the same thing and work for the same thing - to do away with racial profiling.

And, here, Mr. Sanchez, is where you and others in the mass media have failed, because none of you have noted that all THREE P's were advocating the very same thing. The very same thing - and through a strange set of circumstances, they were brought on a collision course.

And, what you fail to point out, Mr. Sanchez, is that this can be an extraordinary opportunity for mass media PROFESSIONALS, such as you, to point out that it was a fortunate incident in the long run.

You and others are inflaming the sitution. Why? I wish Walter Lippmann were here. I wish Walter Cronkite was here. And, I wish most of all that you would use a little common sense, Mr. Sanchez.

You are the one who needs to be taught something.

A Journalist nad Professor Herself

RICK: Your just completed discussion with Bay Buchanan, Roland Martin and the other Leftwing Liberal Whiner was PATHETIC – You guys spent the whole time apologizing to each other and trying to make sure you were not breaking up a friendship among yourselves. Who the Hell cares about whether you guys like each other or not. Stick to the FACTS. the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES JUMPED INTO THE POOL OVER HIS HEAD AND NOW HE IS FLOUNDERING. HE HAD ONE – YES ONLY ONE – ACCEPTABLE ANSWER TO THE REPORTER'S QUESTION - "I DO NOT KNOW THE FACTS THEREFORE NO COMMENT AT THIS TIME" – PERIOD !!!
BUT NO – HE HAD TO LECTURE ME AND EVERY OTHER AMERICAN ABOUT RACIAL PROFILING AND PLACE PRESUMPTIVE BLAME ON THE ENTIRE CAMBRIDGE POLICE DEPT. AND ALSO – ROLAND – EVERY OTHER POLICE FORCE IN THE COUNTRY.- LISTEN TO THE PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT..
OBAMA FANNED THE FLAMES OF RACE ON A SITUATION THAT HAD NOTHING WHAT-SO-EVER TO DO WITH RACE- UNTIL IT WAS INJECTED !!!!!!!! THE WHOLE THING IS A SAD COVER-UP FOR A GLIB PRESIDENT THAT IS TOO FLIP TO APOLOGIZE... PERIOD

Re: Gates arrest and fellow officer's comments. The arresting officer said previously that he feared for his life. The African American officer said Crowly did nothing wrong. (I really can't believe he was in the house with Crowly-No one specifically questioned him on this). If the other officer was in the house with Crowly (both with guns and batons) do these two police officer's want us to believe that they were in fear of little professor Gates? Bunk!!!

Disorderly conduct in a public place. Since when does a man's front porch become a public place?

President Obama somewhat retracted his statement because he has to worry about those cops potentially ganging up on him when he comes to their city. Oops, I though he was a burglar.

Donna   July 24th, 2009 8:57 pm ET

What speaks volume to me whether Sgt. Crowley teaches "Racial Profiling" courses or not is that he refuses to apologize. It speaks volumes about his character or the lack thereof. This whole thing was a mistake starting with the lady who called in the report even though she was being helpful. And yes, I would want someone to call the police if they thought someone was breaking into my home.

Rick, a question I have (that I haven't heard mentioned yet on your show) is why did the policeman (per his police report) ask Dr. Gates to come outside on the porch after he had proven he was the homeowner? Is it because Sgt. Crowley knew then he could arrest the professor in "public" vs. in his home? I honestly don't think Sgt. Crowley is entirely innocent. And he is standing there acting as though he could melt butter in his mouth. If he has taught racial profiling for 5 years then he should have been able to even more so sympthasize with Prof. Gates and understand where he was coming from and why he was so upset.

Sgt. Crowley needs to take a refresher course in Conflict Management. I feel Sgt. Crowley was more than likely ticked off by whatever Prof. Gates said to him so as back in the day he needed to put him in his place. Ask Sgt. James ("Jim") "Crow"ley does he know what those days were called when blacks were made to stay in their place. He may be having a hangover from those days.

Sgt. Crowley should apologize and I never saw in his police report that he said anything close to "Prof. Gates, I apologize for the mix up..." How did he try to diffuse the situation? The onus was on him. No, instead he took a coward's way out and arrested Prof. Gates to let him know who had the power to do so.

Mickey   July 24th, 2009 8:58 pm ET

Shame on you Rick Sanchez,
My grandparents came to live in the Bronx New York in the 50's and they were not fluent in English. But they learned to speak, read and write in English. They were taught at home by my mother and me. Being a native New Yorker, my family taught me to speak Spanish and I am proud to be an American who also speaks Spanish. You should have taught your mother English (especially since to like to brag you are rich and educated).

Sal Garibay   July 24th, 2009 8:59 pm ET

Rick , Seen you a couple times and it bothers me that you always interupt people who are speaking. It's rude when you interupt them. Also slow down when you speak, you'll leave longer.

Jean C.   July 24th, 2009 9:00 pm ET

I don't know who was in the "wrong" in the case of the Professor and the Policeman. But in the case of the two Black policemen defending the policeman, please remember that the only persons INSIDE of the house were the two men. The Black policeman making the remark was on the OUTSIDE. No one knows for sure what was said INSIDE of the house but the two people INSIDE. Also, answer this question, after the Professor presented his ID, should the Policeman have left? Also,it does not matter that this man was chosen to teach this particular class. The thing that matters was his actions INSIDE of that house when the two of them were alone. I don't know what the Professor said, but give Both of them the bebefit of the doubt!

JC Cabral   July 24th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

Rick, During the ealrier segment with your guests regarding the Gates arrest, one Cnn analyst argued why the charges were dropped. He implied the officers were wrong. Your analyst fails to understand that all D.A.'s in this country have the final say on filing cases in their jurisdictions. The officers only have to provide what occurred in their reports. The reason why this case was not filed is obviously simple; it would turn into a media circus! Remember, all DA's have their own discretion and can dismiss cases they are not going to win. Trust me, I've seen my share of cases in South Central LA and Compton Court, where good arrests were made, but sadly dismissed by the DA due to case overloads and not wanting the case to go to trial.

Migdalia Ortiz   July 24th, 2009 9:27 pm ET

Rick,
In regards to the very big controversy between Mr. Gates vs. the police officer who arrested him in is own home; obviously this all started because his neighbor called the police and said they thought a burglary was taking place. You mean to tell me that his neighbor did not recognize him or did they assume because he is Black he was burglarizing his own home? Yes, I certainly believe that Race was very much a part of this fiasco. If I was Mr. Gates, I would be very upset with my neighbors than the racial profile he certainly experienced. It is sad that a well known scholar who teaches in Harvard is now included with the reality that people of of color, disable or just different – have to face everyday because of insecure prejudices.

Kathryn Lowe   July 24th, 2009 9:31 pm ET

Racial profiling is alive and well in America! In the Prof Gates event...The officer who has had 5 years teaching about it, obviously failed in the application of his education of it! He did not understand Gates' feelings in the situation and should have been able to handle it better! He was the "professional" in the situation. My white Dad was a DC policeman for 25 years, and spent 8 of those years as a secret service agent in the protection of Pres Eisenhower and his family. He may have been even a little prejudice in my opinion, but ALWAYS respected the feelings of the people he confronted in the line of duty, no matter their race, and would have handled this way better and avoided the arrest of Prof Gates. I think it is sad how far we have not come in America!

Margie Ceja   July 24th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Thank you for exposing Tom Coburn. Anyone in their right mind can tell he is out to get our president with his this birth certificate issue. I hope as Americans become more and more educated they will learn to vote for a man because he cares about all Americans, not just people who look like them, and go their same church. Surely, we can eventually vote the nuts in Texas out very soon (Kay B. Hutchinson, John C. and Randy N. , from West Texas).

Once again thanks for all you do.

darobertson   July 24th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Rick noticed that you have not asked why the sargent did NOT produce his badge # and name when asked. There is an issue of respect for the citizen whose house the officer is standing. When the officer asked Dr Gates for his ID, the professor went to the kitchen and produced 2 pieces of ID. The officer did not wait at the Front door, he followed Dr Gates into his house without an invitation being extended. Ask any Black person when was the last time that they knocked at the door of any White neighbor and went into their residence without being invited. The White resident would NOT TOLERATE such behavior and would tell the Black INTRUDER to wait at the Front door or they were no longer interested in the original matter. As a matter of fact, Blacks know to wait at the door because we do NOT know how the White resident thinks and may have a GUN waiting.

People come with their experience and wait to see if the situation will end differently. Another opportunity wasted until Pres Obama called the Sargent and extended an invitation to the White House. Educated Black man recognizes how he contributed to a dispute between a Black Professor and a White Sargent, makes a phone call to talk about the situation. Why didn't the White Sargent take that stand with Dr Gates opening that door to discuss what happened instead of taking on the role of a bully and getting support from the brotherhood and sisterhood? The Sargent is a teacher of racial profiling? lacking some basic knowledge dealing with people from a different culture and how to approach them, how NOT to let a situation escalate to the point that now you arrest a MAN just to prove that you have the power to do so.

Rick – still waiting for you to acknowledge that your President turned a confrontation into a win win situation for all but particularly for Sargent Crowley who will no longer be able to go into situations involving Blacks or Hispanics and claim that he did not do anything. Obama wins here hands down. This is what was meant to happen so that everybody learns.

As for Sargent Crowley's partner being Black – he did not make the situation any better. Partner should know what is happening in his community and be able to tell his partner how to walk away when Dr Gates became allegedly abusive verbally. Black police officer should have also produced his badge number and given his name to let Dr Gates know that the Black officer HEARD his request of his White partner and Black officer recognized that White officer did not comply. This could have calmed Dr Gates a bit.

Black officer sat on the sidelines instead of turning the situation around. Understand that he simply wanted to keep his bread and butter. Does not look good for the brotherhood or sisterhood since they all jumped on what the President said instead of fixing the original problem and figure out why did it get so out of control? People and communication.

By the way, Rick, do you know your rights when it involves your residence and the police? if you do, where did you learn it? Ask your viewers how many know their rights when the police gets involved in the matter? Ask your audience to pls identify themselves by race, gender and age. You will be surprised by the various stories you will hear. You will also see the need to have classes given in schools, churches, organizations in all communities, on the rights of the individuals regarding the police.

Great conversation – CHANGE: YES, WE CAN

PS pls let your guests finish speaking before jumping to make another point. I know tht you get very excited by the subject matter, however to me you do NOT show that you have ANY CONTROL on yourself therefor I lose interest in hearing what YOU have to say. Respect your guests when they talk like they respect you as the moderator.

Rick, I have to say that tonight, sitting in for Campbell you were not the direct and to the point reporter that I tune in every day at 3 p.m to watch. You sounded so much like Campbell whom I find so hard to listen to because she is too political and it's so easy to predict her one-sided stand. I've always felt you had higher reporting standards but today I was so disappointed to hear you twist the president's words on the Gates issue exactly as Campbell would. By now everyone knows that he said that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting Gates after establishing his ID as the house owner. On your opening statement you said that the president had called a White cop stupid for arresting a Black professor! That sounds so Campbell but from you Rick, it sounded so absurd because you know that those two statements are so different from each other like day and night. The president was being a man admitting that his choice of words was not appropriate and even reaching out to the officer involved. In my opinion both the officer and the professor acted in a very uncivilized manner with none of them acting better than the other and for that, they probably owe each other an apology. I also feel that the burden of better judgement was with the police officer who supposedly gave a class on race relations but could not think that Gates was probably overreacting the way he did because of the wounds of racial profiling which no one denies still very much exist. If this officer had ever experienced racial profiling he would never have missed that important fact. "Once bitten, twice shy," so the saying goes, meaning that one who has had a snake bite is scared any time they see a snake or anything resembling a snake, even a simple string. Minorities who have been profiled by White cops find it very hard to tell a good cop from a bad one and to them a White cop is only good after he proves to be, not before. That suspicion exists and is undeniable Rick, you of all people should know that.

william   July 26th, 2009 1:34 am ET

speakdtruth If the Professor accused anyone of anything, the professor must be prepared to enter such evidence. If the police accused Gates of a crime then the police must enter such evidence. My big question is, why drop the charges if your judgement to arrest him was correct. Why not prosecute him like you would any ordinary person? The law requires you to act so what is really going on here? How come Gates can get away with a crime but the rest of us cannot, and what type of preferential treatment is that, arrest and no prosecution? Sounds like someone (CROWLY) was disciplining and punishing (ARRESTING) someone (GATES)for some other reason than the official reason stated. Last thing, what kind of evidence are we going to get from the police about the police? I think it will be a predictable plot- Gates was acting like a madman and an out of control person who did everything wrong and had to be restrained and arrested, no other choice. A plot that makes this rational Black intellectual (wise not only in knowledge but also in years/experience) look like someone different to even the people who've known GATES for decades. We are not buying it, and it is so obvious that Crowly does this all the time and is shocked now because he did it to the wrong old Black man. A lesson to all the bigots in the police force to first google the name of their next Black victim before you decide to show your Black victims who's really in charge. The white folks that voted for change (OBAMA) would not do so if they were bigots, and are just as outraged and stand as one with all people of good conscience against any system whether black or white that oppress others.

you continue to persue the gates case. i thought that mr. Obama regreted what he said and almost apologized . So why do you coniue to bring this topic? i change the channel when i hear the name Gates or Crowley. Please put this to rest

Ntang Elad   July 26th, 2009 10:35 am ET

In my opinion, this Gates-Crowley saga has much more far reaching tentacles than we are acknowledging. You see, Most blacks and Hispanics in the state of Massachusetts have either had a bad experience with police or know someone who has encountered some sort of racial profiling. So Mr Gates and Sgt Crowley are really just icons of an ongoing resentment that these two groups have built over the years for each other.
In a man like Henry Gates we see a status where most of us think once achieved, one will no longer be subject to derogatory treatment by police. When you have been stopped and told that there is an ongoing search for a thief or drug dealer with your description, it threatens your personal security in many ways. We try to rationalize and sometimes figure well let me just keep studying so someday I can rise above this kind of lower moral expectations. Then you turn the tv on and see someone who is already where you are headed and still not immune to these kind of treatment. it is indeed very depressing.
If Mr Gates was rude to the officer as has been alleged and is of course possible, that still does not constitute criminal behavior. He was in his own home and was not a risk of harm to himself or others. I have a hard time seeing how anyone can justify spending the tax dollars that pay Sgt Crowley's salary and others who came out as back up to arrest this man who posed no threat to anyone at the time of his arrest. I mean it's not like he was trying to use his cane as a weapon!
To an African American or Hispanic hearing this story two things jump to your mind immediately; first the fear we have developed for the police and how they conduct their affairs when it come to us and the fact that even if one does the right things, get a good education and spend your life pursuing good causes, you can still not escape the mistreatment . So Sgt Crowley may be paying for the past ,present and ongoing actions of the force he serves and some of the officers that taint that uniform with the venom of a people unjustly victimized. But there is such a thing as vicarious liability and this should be a major indication to the police in Massachusetts to revisit the image they have put forth in the black and Latino communities. they should try to become that force that protects and serves all and not inspire fear in even those minority individuals that stay far from a life of crime.

william   July 26th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

I just want to add that KATE CASEY (a white blogger, above) is one of those people who is not a bigot, and who more than likely voted for OBAMA. She is speaking truth, and anyone who upholds/defend racist behavior did not and will not ever support Obama. Obama's victory was due to people like my dear Kate, and not to people who thinks it's ok to chain and put human beings behind bars much less just to satisfy your (COPS) petty kicks. OBAMA just came from visiting a slave castle in Africa. He saw the dungeons and the bars and he heard the horrible stories of deprivation that these slaves had to go through. Can you imagine the horror and the psychological effect this incarceration did to those poor people. Well, if you can then you've just entered the world and the fear of most Black men in America. Young Black men are trained from early to be upstanding and honest citizens. Most times, and in most cases Black parents struggle to provide for their children, and regardless of what they are unable to provide they try to instill good, honest, and decent principles within their children. The police are turning a lot of Black folks into criminal by arresting them for no good reason-at least none that can stand up to real serious debates- exposing them to the dark side. Now if I'm a young Black man and I keep getting harrassed and arrested by the police for no good reason, except their prejudice, and I feel like there is no real justice for me then what other alternatives do I have? This is a place (AMERICA) that boasts JUSTICE as one of it's cornstones, and so Black people, especially in light of the Gates situation, expect to get JUSTICE. We are not surprised if we don't because we do not expect better from bigots and bigots who defend the bad behavior of their colleagues. I must also condem all BLACK officers who took an oath to serve and protect all of us (not just white folks, and do with as you like with the rest policy) that stand aside and watch these types of behavior go unchallenged. Then again, maybe they worry about their jobs and positions in life and have no problem in turning a blind eye when it comes to biased/bad behavior on the part of their white colleagues against people of color. Either way you slice it people who are not bigots will be outraged, as dear KATE, at Crowly's abuse of authority and power. To be able to take another man's FREEDOM, even if only for a few seconds, is a power that must be used with great discretion-bigots should not be able to weild this type of power.

RICK YOU TELL IT LIKE IT IS I CAN SEE THAT CLEARLY FROM

CANADA FOX TELLS LIES ABOUT OUER GREAT HEALTH CARE

LeRoy   July 26th, 2009 4:27 pm ET

I wanted to take this time to comment on the "outrage" as you put it concerning the President's statement” That the Cambridge Police department acted “Stupidly” in their handling of the Gates situation. I would like to say first and foremost that I am an American of African descent; I must say that it wasn’t a surprise to me the reaction of the media or whites in general. You have a case were a Blackman (Professor Gates) is arrested in his home after showing as he and the police state proper ID.
Ric, you seem to take the policeman at his word while giving very little credence to what the Professor had to say. I guess police don’t lie are manipulate the truth do they? I’m here to tell you as many others will that police will lie they will manipulate for their own purposes. It would be interesting if you did a story on all the injustices committed by law enforcement. I’ll give you just I a few: When I was accused of being a burglar while sitting in my car in Chesterfield, being approached by the police and him saying, “There has been a report of burglaries in the area and that my car fit the description”, or when my friend and I were picked up by St. Louis law enforcement and taken to this white woman’s house and from her porch while we were sitting in the back of a dark police car she being asked to identify us as the ones who snatched her purse. You have no idea of the stress or fear that has surrounds me and others like me to this day. The fact is police do lie, they do manipulate the truth and they to a man will cover-up their wrongdoing. He you ever heard the one, I shot him because he was going for my gun or the one he tried to run me over with the vehicle that’s why I killed him, check around there are lots of stories like that.
The questions of the officer teaching racial profiling classes seem to imply he would somehow be incapable of racially profiling anyone yeah that’s a joke. Then to add insult to injury you cart out two Black officers to say how good and great the offending officer is. This reminds me of the mass murderer that lived next door to the couple and is finally discovered and the couple saying how good the person was and that he didn’t strike them as that type of person. I’m sure you could have gotten character witness for the professor if you wanted to. But in an attempt to add credence to your report you took the angle of the innocent officer. Let me ask you a question; were those black officers you interviewed there on the scene?
And finally a comment: I fear being pulled over by police, I know depending on this individual’s mood it’s open season on me. To add, have you been driving down the highway or street and seen a black person pulled over by a police officer normally a white police officer, does it arouse any emotions in you, it does in me, it arouses anger, and fear and pity glad it’s not me I say.
Argue the right point, the comment the President made was directed at the behavior of the officer not the officer as a human being.

Not Just Any Health Care Program

Middle class Americans need and want a government controlled affordable universal health care program, not an HMO controlled program that has been promoted on TV by a pharmaceutical company.

Guy Arthur Thomas   July 26th, 2009 7:25 pm ET

You are so desperate for attention. HAHAHAHA! You have to wine like a baby about Fox News that eats your lunch and any Hispanic who likes Fox News you insult and then when they protest, like a fool you think your contemptible insult which raised dust is some kind of commendation for you because you people objected to being insulted? Right, you career will be just what it is and never more, go ask that moron who went on Jeopardy and made fool of herself, she isn't an anchor any more either.

Next Please!

Jose   July 26th, 2009 8:40 pm ET

I want to say thank you for what you said about Hispanics and Fox News on Twitter! I don't understand how one can be a latino and work for a network that openly promotes anti immigrant rhetoric. You have spoken truth to power and have earned my respect. Thank you.

To be honest, I wish CNN would do something about Lou Dobbs.

Scott A.   July 26th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

WOW. What a talent Ricki is. I'm surprised Ricki wasn't whining during her walk through.

Kris   July 26th, 2009 10:59 pm ET

I find myself harder and harder to resist to watch CNN at 3pm on weekdays, first I found that the there were too many commercials, but Rick you are an outstanding journalist I must say...you are growing on me...
Please stay on top of the health care debate..for example things like why those who are resisting a government public option like Sen. Mitch McConnell enjoy a government health care themselves... He was looking like a fool on State of the Union with John King today and is annoyingly ignoring important questions about this debate...unfortunately John King is a softie when it comes to questioning someone seriously about this issue based on what I saw today....but how does public officials get away with this kind of answers in this important debate?

steven west   July 26th, 2009 11:14 pm ET

Please explain to me how a statement about miscalibrated my words is an apology for a irrational judgement based on ignorance of events. When the president said he had no facts but the police acted stupidly in Cambidge, he demeaned an entire profession. When asked to explain, I did not hear an apology that I was wrong–only that I miscalibrated my words. Thanks

Machine Gun Pete   July 27th, 2009 11:51 am ET

I was born and brought up in Cambridge , Ma. and I can tell you for sure, Harvard Professors like Gates and Dershowtitz always look down their noses at the "TOWNIES" which the cop Crowley is .
It wasn't about race although Gates tried to make it that. It's about
an upity black Harvard professor who thinks because he's a little bit higher up on the ladder of social acceptance that he can crap all aver the Cambridge police department.
AND Michael Jackson ...is he DEAD yet?!!! Name a Street after him and let's put an end to it ! Their must be something more newsworthy out there than these two jokers.

Connie in Calgary   July 27th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

The Cambridge Police have just released the 9-11 tapes and the radio chat from the night of the Gates residence incident! And they've done so at the same time that the CPD initiated a commission or task force into race relations. ??

The President apologized for escalating emotions and rhetoric around the incident. How come the police didnt get that message?

Robin Cardneaux   July 27th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

Rick or TJ:

We just heard about the violent death of boxer Vernon Forrest. He was a great fighter, however, my husband and I knew him from the multitude of kindness he showed so many children with disabilities.
We have a daughter with Down's Syndrome. Whenever we could watch Vernon fight we would, because we truly felt a bond with him.
We never met him but we knew what a great man he really was by the countless good deeds he showed to these special children. They spoke through him. We are not famous people or politically connected
but we would like you to consider having a day where everyone who is sick of such senseless violence tie a ribbon to as many trees as possible to say ENOUGH to Violence! doing this not only in memory of Vernon but to all of those who have left us too soon due to violance.

Thank you,

Re: Gates/Crowley – how dead does this horse have to be before CNN stops beating on it?

Chris from Wausau   July 27th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

The Cambridge incident turned racial when Prof. Gates started harassing the Police Officer about racial profiling. I know many white people who have been pulled over driving home from work due to the fact that a crime has been committed in the area. They got out of their vehicle, put their hands on the vehicle, waited while a search was done. When everything checked out they were free to go. What's his problem?

Trina   July 27th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

I am curious as to the reason you played only a portion of the 911 tape. I would be interested in hearing the beginning of the conversation. Also the caller identified seeing two men however there has been no mention of anyone other than Professor Gates on the scene.

Ms. ree   July 27th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

If the professor showed the police his ID – regardless of what happened before then, it should have ended. Also if the police waited untl he stepped outside minutes later (after ID was suppose to have been shown) then it was a power trip from the police. It is easy to say I would have done this or that, but when you are in that situation and it is not clear as to what set things off in motion, that will always have a different outcome. Oh by the way, the lady on the phone did say – I think he looks (either hispanic or puerto rican)

John   July 27th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

Rick,

If Sarah pakin has quit because her term of office expires in 2010 and the rest of her tenure is "dead time", does this mean that she advocates that ALL elected officials should quit TO-DAY if their term of office expires in 2010?

That means that ALL Senators andRepresentatives who are up for re-election in 2010 should quit TO-DAY.

What a great idea. This would mean neither house would be able to form a quorum, they would NOT be able to pass any bills or enact any laws.

Great news for ALL the citizens of the USA>

Right on Sarah. Go girl!

Oh sorry – you ARE gone.

lynne bell   July 27th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

enough is enough on the gates matter. everybody in the whole country knows that racial profiling goes on in this country all the time. sad commentary on this country if you ask me!!

Rick,
As the debate and war of words flying around the race relationship folowing Prof gates arrest. Could you please inform the audience about the Circadian Rhytm changes and behavior?
Prof Gates was returning from China. The time difference is almost 15 hrs. As you know the internal clock has altered from the time change.
This in turn changes the brain serotonin(5-Hydroxytryptamine) and plasma corticosteroid level and this can produce severe irritability and belligerence. Nobody should blame prof Gates for his behavior but the cops sould have acted little more cautiously. But all are playing dumb with out knowing the scientific rationale of Prof Gates behavior, if he has acted out.
Best regards,
Dr Abraham

Clariti   July 27th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

Rick,

On your show there was a question about who introduced racial profiling into the Gates/Crowley matter. Tapes indicate it wasn't the 911 call. Truth appears to be it was Gates, himself, continually accusing Crowley of racial bias. Crowley merely showed up to check out a possible break-in in progress. There was no "profiling" and would not have been even if race had been mentioned. A passerby thought she would help a homeowner (black or white) by reporting a possible break-in (black or white). She clearly says on the tape that it could have been that someone didn't have a key; she couldn't be sure. So they sent out a policeman to check it out. Suppose the policeman had been black. He, too, would have said, please step out on the porch. He, too, would have asked for identification. The difference? Gates would not have been scared out of his skin. In my view, that is why he was yelling (if one accepts the police report). The only thing Crowley may have done wrong was to be white.

Catherine Hassard   July 27th, 2009 4:28 pm ET

Rick,

I know something needs to be done so everyone has access to health care. But I am concerned because I have been hearing that the health plan has euthanasia clause in it. If this is true why haven't heard more about it.. This is very frightening. What is happening that life is becoming so dispensable. First the unborn. Now the elderly. What is next, the sick and disabled?

Terri   July 27th, 2009 5:47 pm ET

on this gates issue. One thing you can bet on if anyone in the future is seen possibly breaking into his house no neighbor will ever call 911 to report it and I guess I'll think twice before calling of a break in on anyone. There is wrong things done to every race in this country but there will always be a problem as long as blacks feel that they will play the race card on everything. it is very tiring. Also maybe cnn can do a segment on native americans in america. they were here before any of us and most live in poverty though being a proud race you don't hear the whining.

Hugh   July 27th, 2009 7:11 pm ET

Rick,
Watching all the news on the "Cash for Clunker" program on CNN, why doesn't the American car companies just offer the hybrid engine as their standard engine in their new cars. That may stimulate sales.

Becky Davis   July 27th, 2009 7:25 pm ET

RICK,

SGT. CROWLEY IS A LIAR AND HE WROTE HIS POLICE REPORT TO TRY TO JUSTIFY ARRESTING PRO. GATES.

1. LUCIA WHALEN NEVER SAID SHE SAW "TWO BLACK MEN WITH
BACKPACKS" . SO WHERE DID SGT, CROWLEY GET THAT LIE
FROM.

2. THROUGH HER LAWYER- SHE STATED SHE NEVER EVEN
SPOKE WITH SGT CROWLEY OUTSIDE ON THE STREETS. YET
SGT. CROWLEY SAID " A WOMAN CALLED OUT TO HIM AND
TOLD HIM THAT SHE OBSERVED WHAT APPEARED TO BE TWO
BLACK WITH WITH BACKPACKS WEDGING HIS SHOULDER IN
HE DOOR. WHALEN SAID THAT CONVERSATION NEVER TOOK
PLACE.

SO WHO IS LYING RICK- IS IT THE 911 CALLER OR THE POLICE OFFICER?

Fred Morgan   July 27th, 2009 7:56 pm ET

Late comment on Gates gate. Shame on you for considering yourself a man of color and not understanding that police department all over the country have, at times, slanted police reports in their favor. Especially in sensitive racially charged incidents. Maybe the Gates incident has a plausible answers, but many others do not. How long have you personally considered yourself a man of color?

Obamacare will ration health care for older Americans drastically!
Unfortunately it will also affect all others as well!
Government will also have control of all records and access to your financial accounts so they can withdraw any funds they deem necessary.
They are also trying to gain supervisory of existing private health care plans.
Your privacy in all areas will disappear, along with any sense of security you once thought was yours!

This is a true tragedy in the making!
I am glad I am old and won't have to endure too much of this travesty!

Steve   July 27th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Harvard, Gates, and The Police Officer
Just a thought! You have all those students paying thousands of dollars a year to be educated by a hate mongering, racially intolerant, anti-law respecting African-American professor? Somebody needs to ask Harvard what kind of education or faculty are they allowing? If this man acts like this in public, what brain washing, racial, anti-law education is he providing in the classroom? Somebody please ask Harvard!

Clariti you make a good point, however if you are right and Prof Gates was scared by the fact that Crowley was white, then it brings us once again to the point that if black men are scared when they see white cops,, we have a problem. Unless we are assuming that Prof Gates is an unreasonable man or an isolated case, of which I doubt both

What is wrong with this country? I do not want the government in charge of my life..... Obama is talking about this healthcare reform. It is crap. It is not going to hurt him or any others that are part of the 545 people who are making decisions for us, because they will have their own healthcare plan, which is seperate from THE TRUE AMERICANS. I do not think Obama or anyone in the house, congress, etc should be making health care decisions for others when they do not have a medical background. This is not Canada..... If they would work on getting rid of all the ILLEGALS that live in the United States, take away their rights so they may leave on their own, and quit giving them Social Security Benefits, medicaid, and medicare this may solve part of the problem. There is not one news station that would report anything that would offend Obama. Why is he still allowing illegals to get away with taking from our country. Is it because,(This is what I heard and would really like to know if it was TRUE) – Obama's Grandmother was here Illegally? I would really like to know if this was true. I keep hearing this, but would like to really know the truth.

Charles Fisher   July 28th, 2009 3:39 pm ET

T.J. Holmes

Why don't you guys make Obama answer this question, "If this plan is so good why is it not mandatory
for all of congress?" He was asked that question on the AARP interview and he ducked it as usual.
If their health plan is ok for them then why is it not the plan we are offered? His answer was that it was similar.
Similar is NOT the same as exactly what they have. These elites think they are better then we are and should have
special treatment. They are wrong.

It's time you guys showed some guts and got the answers we deserve.
Also, this plan, no matter what it is in the end should NOT include anyone who is not a citizen. No if's and's or butts.

victor   July 28th, 2009 7:37 pm ET

i am watching the situation room and this guy David Frum; former president bush speech writer made a comment that i am not all so comfortable with and deserve a little more clarity. President Obama was shown briefly in am interview where he commented that if he is unable to turn the economy around for the better within the first three years in office then he would not run for a second term. The panel got quizzed but this Frum guy when asked what he thought was next for the president if he makes it happen, he answered by saying that if indeed he succeeds and happen to be in the white house .......
i do not seem to understand where he coming from with that answer but i would like to know where he suppose the president; obama would be or should be other than the white house. Obama has four years to be in office–he succeeds an agenda in three years but not in the white house–where would he be ?

vivien   July 29th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Why is Lucia Whalen coming out on TV to state her case? It seems she is seeking her own share of the publicity this issue has generated and wishes to be invited to the beer party as well. Nobody has villified her. Afterall the tapes have been played and we know her call did not state the race of the people involved.

cheryl frank   July 29th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

Has anyone considered that someone might have been really breaking into the professors house and how would he have spoken to the police if someone had robbed his house or harmed him? He should be grateful for the police. It is not a matter for the president of the U.S. he has more important things to concentrate on.

nita roberts   July 30th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

first off the lady that made the call to 911 did what anyone else would do, i know i would if the call of someone breaking in with the serial killer had not called 911 in nc we would still be living in fear still. it was the cops choice of the way they handled the situation! the police dept played the tape of the 911 call lay off her! also we should not ever disgrace our presidant! no one did before, why now he has done more for the USA than has been done in years , he is making peace with countries we have feared for years. at least he is doing his job!

Vivian Middleton (Please READ)   July 30th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

I have a question regarding MJ's death..As an ER nurse, I am curious if the Hospital Records or the Medical Examiner made any mention or notation of Levidity??? This is a post-mortem process that begins to occur immediately following cessation of blood flow to the body(DEATH).. The degree of Levidity, as well as the location can tell in what position a person was laying in when this occurred as well as in determining how long an individual has been dead...With all of the reporting going on about the time lines involved in Dr Murrays actions the day that Michael died, I was just wandering about this particular event...If Dr Murray had found MJ dead, it is entirely possible that he was stalling for time because he had already noticed the onset of Levidity..By delaying Michael from being removed from the home immediately by EMS, perhaps he felt that if he acted as though he were trying to revive him, then their would be NO speculation about the levidity which would have been present..Just a theory..

I really think it would be news worthy to be on your show . I live in Plainview, Texas and I have been living a nightmare of discrimination concerning my job and now my inability to get a job. I am illegally watched, harassed and I believe have some form of computer chips or batteries have been put in my body during surgeries. This may sound crazy but I have read about projects in scholarly journal ariticles about the AR intelligence programs and virtual technology. I am 99.9% certain that this is happening to me and those around me cannot say because they fear federal prison or want to win more than they care about human suffering. I am not crazy. I am working on a master's degree program. I am being publicly humiliated daily with the use of distortion technology. I promise that with some help I could get to the bottom of this. I am desperate and I am probably your biggesst fan. I am on twitter under hotpink00 or Melinda Jones. I trust God and good people to help me out of this nightmare. It will make a hell of a story and I am currently writing a book when I am able to concentrate. Thank you so much. Melinda Jones (806)729-1665

Rick,
Thank you for your great interview with Rick Scott. You did a great job on exposing this person for the crook he is. Keep it Up!
I also have an idea for dealing with these people at town hall meetings who oppose healthcare reform by not even allowing constructive debate. They should be asked to sign a petition to stop and or decline their participation in Medicare and Medicaid. If they don't want to sign this will expose them for the hypocrites they are.

Marc Flenar   August 6th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Come on Rick, quit crying about the Conservatives raising a little ruckus at the town hall meetings. Everyone has the right to speak their mind. I am disappointed in the behavior some of the folks showed, but the message is still the same, government run healthcare isn't the best idea.

And as far as the CPR website publishing the town hall meeting information, I'm sure if you'll take the time to do a simple Google search, you'll find Liberal websites doing the same thing.

Take a deep breath, relax for a few seconds, then take a napkin and wipe some of the "liberal' off your chin. It's dripping on your neck tie.

This show lives and breathes with your input, it's shaped by your opinions and concerns, and there's no program like it anywhere on CNN. Anywhere ON EARTH! (OK, settle down...)

Click through the pages here to see clips and interviews from Rick's newscast. There's plenty of pictures of Rick on the CNN set and behind the scenes with his production team. And you know those moments when Rick speaks his mind? His "interstitials"? We've collected them, too.

Rick Sanchez, weekdays from 3:00 to 4:00 PM ET.

Now let's hear from you!

Open & Standing

These people have all been asked to come on Rick's newscast and talk to him live. In person, on the phone, by morse code, WE DON'T CARE! They've all either declined our invitation or simply chosen to not respond.

C'mon...what are you afraid of? We'd love to scratch your name off this list!
