Fabiola   July 1st, 2009 10:57 am ET

Where is Rick?? I have not see him for 2 weeks now.. I hope he comes back soon. We miss him.!

Adrienne Risby   July 1st, 2009 11:45 am ET

Dear Rick, Look into the state of Illinois budget cuts! That is hurting low income people. People on Social Security, Adoption Assistance, People with disabilities! They are even wanting to stop burying the indigent! To keep from raising taxes! One example for you. A disable woman is on SSI her income is $679.00 amonth. Out of this come $98. 00 for medicare insurance, $176.00 rent. $$25. telephone and oh yes she qualifies for $35.00 in food stamps. And they want to cut benefits to low income families. Come on could you live on $35. in food stamps. That is less than a dollar a day! And they wonder why seniors were eating cat food. If low income mom's that work get their help for child care is stopped what do you think will happen? They either leave their children home alone. Or stop working and possibley have them taken away and put in foster care which would cost them almost 3 times the cost for the state to take care of them.
What is wrong with these people!!!!!

Gady Mayen   July 1st, 2009 11:54 am ET

I don't maind the MJ coverage as long as I don't have to look at or hear from Reverand AL Sharpton anymore.

Mike in Quebec   July 1st, 2009 3:10 pm ET

Rick welcome back. Just a heads up, many Canuks watch your show and it's CANADA DAY, 142nd Birthday. Can you give a; How's it goin' EH! to the Canada viewers? Big party in Ottawa today and tonight!

Cheers mate and welcome back!

Obakemono   July 1st, 2009 3:11 pm ET

Please, for the love of Captain Ahab, focus on a new subject that matters to people. Like jobs, health care, the economy, the threats from N.Korea, The Iranian debacle, not MJ 24/7. MJ was a huge influence on the world, but there are more important pressing issues that need coverage.

Marion White   July 1st, 2009 3:13 pm ET

Rick, Michael Jackson must not have any love of his sisters. Why didn't he nominate as he put it any of them. Or his brothers for that matter. Instead he nominates a stranger. Well maybe not a stranger since the whole family heads the stranger than fiction list.

Will- Charlotte, NC   July 1st, 2009 3:17 pm ET

Rick, glad to have you back! I thought the Michael Jackson story was way bazaar. This Mark Sanford thing is something Hollywood could never ever write. Sanford could be the cure for all men cheating. What was he drinking?!

radell   July 1st, 2009 3:17 pm ET

I am a regular viewer of cnn, but have become very disgruntled lately and will probably cease to view your network if things remain as they are. Your coverage of Michael Jackson's death is way more than necessary. the man died three days ago and you are still covering it like it is some sensational story. It seems that your network now takes a story that could be covered in one day and drags it out for a week. ENOUGH, please!!!!!!

Rick   July 1st, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Rick
While it's nice to have you back, enough of Micheal Jackson. That's entertainment, not news. I'll start watching again after CNN gives more coverage to Iran or Norm Coleman giving up rather than some pop singer who hasn't been relavent for quite a few years.

Abdul   July 1st, 2009 3:18 pm ET

If i could have one wish just let Neverland Ranch be a museum

Oops3   July 1st, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Rick! Get back to business! What's going on in Honduras? In Iran? Michael Jackson is a piece of pop culture and I'm sorry he died, but c'mon! Is he the only subject you can wrap your mind around?

jacqueline villarreal peters   July 1st, 2009 3:21 pm ET

Rick,
You speak of addiction drugs. I am an anesthesiologist and have been hearing that MJ had possibly abusd Diprivan. Diprivan is not a sedative like valium. Diprivan is an induction agent used to induce anesthesia. In order to have a person sleep, a special pump is used to titrate affect, which is sleep. If given in a bolus, the person sleeps for several seconds and wakes up. It burns in the vein and usually is not abused due to this discomfort. I find it unlikely that MJ abused this drug.

dlorusso   July 1st, 2009 3:23 pm ET

I am really disappointed and surprised at the major news organizations. The MJ coverage is too much. It reminds me of a bunch of buzzards ripping whatever is left of this guy. You know his children see and hear this. Come on, take the high road.

reyknows1   July 1st, 2009 3:25 pm ET

almost 29 years ago i watched reagan and carter talk about health care economy, job lost, inflation, lots of stuff and almost 30 years later here we are talking about the same things.when is this cycle going to end .iam an independent voter and its pretty sad this country cant fix problems that have been in the public view for so long.something has to change or like most politicians its best if it stays the same pretty sad.

Fred in San Francisco   July 1st, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Rick.....Really Glad You Are Back! Ali did a good job, as did other replacement anchors but you are the BEST! Nobody can do your show like you can. No more vacations ok? . I do hope we get off the MJ story soon (may he rest in peace)....too many other more important subjects out there. WELCOME BACK!

Katheryn   July 1st, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Well, I am going to get to the facts. Joe Jackson is a phony. He led people to believe on TV that he is running things. When it boils down to it, he and Katherine Jackson supposedly have not lived together in years. The rumors seems to be true that the Jacksons were not getting along. Finally, Michael left all of them out of the will except Katherine, his mother and the children. That's a good thing that he loved his mother.

e   July 1st, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Hi there
I'm so sick and tired on hearing about Michael Jackson. I think the media has gone crazy.

Is there nothing more important to talk about what is going on in the world.

All u hear is Michal Jackson. What about giving us some more important news.
Enough is enough

Sherri Becker   July 1st, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Rick, about the prescription drugs MJ was taking. Many doctors
in the U S are prescribing high price medications for kick backs to get rich. This is at our expense and health. I bet the drugs wern't generic.

I had a very expensive drug prescribed for me by a doctor filling in for my regular doctor, unfortunately it was one that pops tendons. I will be suffering the rest of my life for those checks that went back to the doctor.
Sherri

shawn   July 1st, 2009 3:32 pm ET

rick,
i was an addict of xanax and vicodin for 12 years, and i used to pop 20 xanax and 15- 20 vicodin a day,...i am clean and sober now for 21 months, it never kept me from working yes it changes your mood but i guarentee you and addict of prescription drugs is much worse than one that is doing cocaine or speed or pot..............21 months ago i flushed all the pills down the toilet and i havnt gone back since.........we must pay much more attention to this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sage   July 1st, 2009 3:33 pm ET

I'm very concerned about the discussion today concerning prescription medications abuse. Yes, medications get abused, but just as bad, all the attention paid to prescription abuse is causing doctors to be reluctant to prescribe medications for those in chronic pain. The chronic pain patient who might depend on medication to have any kind of quality of life at all finds themselves treated like a druggie from the street looking for a high.

Besides those who deal with chronic pain on a daily basis, we find doctors reluctant to prescribe appropriate pain medication for terminally ill patients because they may get "hooked". They are dying, so who cares if they get hooked? Shouldn't the goal be to keep a terminally ill patient out of pain and give them some dignity in death?

I have lived with daily pain since I was 13 and I'm often just worn out from it, but I choose not to take narcotics because I don't like the way pain patients are treated in this country.

William   July 1st, 2009 3:34 pm ET

The tan is pimpin', now HONDURAS! Come on CNN, don't let this one slip under the radar. especially in comparison to how you were froathing at the mouth over Iranian unrest. . .honduras, honduras. please.

Audrey   July 1st, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Rx drug abuse is a BIG problem. The person taking the drugs is the most culpable, but the fact that doctors prescribe 80-100 pills per script so that insurance pays is also part of the problem. It's a catch-22 –if the patient wants the insurance to pay for the prescription the doctor must prescribe these great quantities; thepatients are already paying the insurance company with their monthly premiums. If a medicine does not work, then you have a great surplus of powerful drugs that are just sitting around PAID FOR. I blame the insurance companies on this policy. P.S. I am not a doctor or in the medical or insurance fields.

Steve Davis   July 1st, 2009 3:36 pm ET

Enough with the wall-to-wall MJ coverage. I watch CNN for news! Give me some news Rick! Seriously. I am on MJ overload.

Stephanie Foster   July 1st, 2009 3:36 pm ET

Seems to me as that "will" was made up by somebody. its a fake. Why wouldn't Michael's own parents be aware of his son's will???!!!

Linda McIntyre   July 1st, 2009 3:37 pm ET

If the governor Sandford's mistress is "truly" his soul mate, then he should go to her. As time goes by, the governor will come to resent his wife. I don't think a "real" marriage is possible when one party claims someone else is their soul mate.

Laura L. Nelson   July 1st, 2009 3:38 pm ET

Rick– it is not just pain killers and sleeping pills. I was prescribed a common antidepressant, Effexor. After two and a half years, I discovered on my own that the drug causes "discontinuation syndrome" which is drug company speak for "It's addictive." Although the FDA had sent out a warning letter in 2004 about this, my psychiatrist had not shared this information with me. After finding the warning letter on the FDA website, I demanded to be tapered off the drug. It was not a good experience. See the website devoted to Effexor side effects with the petition on this drug. Many people are addicted to prescription drugs and may not realize it. In my case, withdrawal symptoms would appear if I missed a dose but I did not know that the absence of the drug was causing me to feel ill. Some of the problem of addiction to prescription drugs is due to drug companies being unwilling to be honest about the addictive properties of some drugs. There is a story here that transcends Michael Jackson, rest his soul.

john   July 1st, 2009 3:39 pm ET

Hours of discussion about a governor's sex life with not a single word about his success as a governor (or lack of). Days of coverage about a dead song and dance man. This is not news its tabloid TV.

Abdul   July 1st, 2009 3:39 pm ET

I dont care what they say. I LOVE the coverage here, if some of these critics dont like the MJ coverage turn the dial!

Eric Bascom   July 1st, 2009 3:43 pm ET

Rick, the LA Times is reporting breaking news Michael Jackson's memorial service could be moved Friday to the Staples Center to acccomidate the large crowds of people. According to his ranch from athorities, it's not safe because there is only a two lane road and there is no parking.

Tracy   July 1st, 2009 3:44 pm ET

NOT ALL PATIENTS ABUSE PRESCRIPTION PAIN MEDICATION
Please, please – every time some famous whoever is shown to abuse prescription pain medications, beginning with the media and cocntuining with legislators the people who are taking small amounts of pain medications daily for years (who do not abuse for a high) are denied the one or two pills they were prescribed each day – please do some valid peer-reviewed research and broadcast that these medications are used by many patients in pain who do not abuse them.

Suzyrn   July 1st, 2009 3:44 pm ET

I appreciate the coverage of MJ-he was a musical genius, and like all geniuses, had his own eccentricities.

C Stuart   July 1st, 2009 3:45 pm ET

I am surprise that MJ's will did not specify that his father should have no direct contact with his children. His father has shown the world exactly how he feels about MJ, nothing but a way to make money. This Marshall Thompson that Joseph is in business with is also a convicted criminal who was convicted in Illinois of bribery. Is Joseph Jackson aware of this? Marshall Thompson was a former Maywood, IL park district sergeant who was convicted in 2001 for taking thousands of dollars from people who wanted police badges, acting as the "bagman," then giving the money to Dixmoor Park District authorities. I am surprise that CNN has not research this information.

Angela   July 1st, 2009 3:46 pm ET

I hope the family will seriously consider burying Michael in Gary and building a memorial there for three reasons 1) the area can use the economic boost, 2) it's more centrally located in the country 3) they probably want him where the Neverland area has said they do not.

Anderson   July 1st, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Since Michael died I have not heard of a single TV station mentioning he was a muslim, can you explain this? because this is very important especially when it comes to burrying him.

floridian   July 1st, 2009 3:47 pm ET

The executors of Michael Jackson's estate will have to abide by the provisions of what's in Jackson's TRUST. Wasn't there a statement about the Trust in Michael's will?

Gary Snook   July 1st, 2009 3:48 pm ET

Hi Rick,
I watched your piece on perscription drug abuse and just wanted to ask. Why are the real victims of drug abuse never mentioned?People like me.I have intractible pain disease secondary to adhesive arachnoiditis and depend to narcotics to keep from jumping off the roof.Ilicit drug use has robbed thousands of very sick people from getting the care that they deserve. Not all drug users are drug addicts.Do you realixe how hard it is for someone like me to find a doctor willing to treat me? By thy way no one in real pain gets high from their meds, they just get some relief from the pain somewhat.

Michael   July 1st, 2009 3:49 pm ET

Rick....What is the chance that there is a more updated will??......for a star like MICHAEL JACKSON, wouldn't the will be updated more often?

Monica, Coral Springs Fl   July 1st, 2009 3:49 pm ET

About the Effexor.... If the Effexor is being stopped by a Licensed Doctor, he/she will usually give the patient a schedule for cutting back dosage gradually over a long period of time. All antidepressants have the same instructions.

Jordan Watson   July 1st, 2009 3:52 pm ET

For all whom question the reporting on the life and death of Micheal Jackson.
I believe the majority wants to know and hear all the latest news on M.J. So if it is to much for you, watch something else! R.I.P. Micheal we love you.

John Kelly   July 1st, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Apparently only the USA and New Zealand allow prescription drug advertising on TV mass media etc. Are we surprised that there is widespread abuse & over prescribing with the pill pushers having so much influence over the general population who always want the next best pill?

alixjjs   July 1st, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Rick Don Lemon doesn't seem to understand that Michael left his entire estate to the Jackson family trust. Which means all of the specifics are contained in the trust. And trust are never made public. The will is just a document that is pointing to the trust but does not supercede the trust

carol perry   July 1st, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Sorry, Rick, I meant the esteemed governor of South Carolina.

Gayle   July 1st, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Sanford is a male, Republican politician. Why do you expect any other kind of behavior from him?

Ernie Stech   July 1st, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Not at all surprising that the Michael Jackson will has lawyers as executors. A complex estate cannot be put in the hands of people who do not understand estate and tax laws. Futhermore, Michael Jackson may have wanted to deliberately keep his estate out of the hands of his father and mother.

Monica, Coral Springs Fl   July 1st, 2009 3:58 pm ET

Hey Rick,
Just to clarify, if you are given Oxycontin for therapeutic use by your doctor, whatever dosage is given, is set for the type of condition you have. The problem is when you take it more often than prescribed, or there is no pain for it to work on.
I have a severe case of Fibromyalgia and I take 4 Oxy a day, plus another med for breakthrough pain between doses.
I was young in the 70's and as most of my generation, I experimented, I know how it feels to be "high". I can assure you that regardless of how much pain meds I take, I am completely straight/lucid (although sometimes I hurt so much I wish I was high!)/

Dan in Florida   July 1st, 2009 3:58 pm ET

What you are witnessing in the Mark Sanford saga is the eventual emergence of Jenny Sanford as a political figure for Governor and/or Senator of South Carolina. She will be martyred for standing up to her husband and also rake in sympathetic votes.

Chronic Pain   July 1st, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Hi Rick

As a chronic pain patient, I know first hand how easy the doctors write an RX for strong drugs. There needs to be tougher laws on these drugs. I also had become dependant on these med's years ago and now I am back on them for another condition. I am carefully monitored by people on my family, because I came close to death years ago.
Thanks for bringing awareness to this and PLEASE continue to do more stories on this topic.

Patty Self   July 1st, 2009 4:03 pm ET

I know that the death of Michael Jackson has to be covered but enough is enough. Why wasn't there very much coverage of the death of Farrah Fawcett? And will there be anymore coverage of the death of Karl Malden. I think that most of the country has had enough of the bull crap about Michael's addiction to prescription drugs. He stated in his will that he want the guardianship of his children to go to Diana Ross if his mother is not able or passes away before him. But stop and think about it Diana Ross has had trouble with drinking and drugs herself. And no the famous people are not the only ones that have trouble with prescription meds, my ex husband still to this day has trouble with them. He started using drugs when he was 13 years old and he is 51 now. He would get mad at me if I did not get my prescriptions for pain meds filled. When I had my hysterectomy I did not get the pain meds the doctor wanted to give me because it was basically synthetic morphine.
Alot of the trouble with people getting hooked on prescription meds is the fact that some doctors write too many prescriptions for these meds especially to patients that are on government health insurance.

Rene Jr.   July 1st, 2009 4:04 pm ET

I'm commenting on the last segment you had about precipitation drugs abuse. Being in the service industry in Las Vegas, I saw precipitation drugs abuse every day i went to work. I feel that the problem is that the individual that had the medical problem and was receiving pills like lortabs, percocets, and oxycodone is now faking that pain so he/she can get more pills to sell it to fellow employee for a profit. These people are getting five dollars a pill for lortabs & percocets and up to 30 dollars a pill for oxycodones. You see the seller is getting the pills next to nothing because they are using their insurance to get the drugs for a co-pay and making hundreds of dollars per battle of pills.

Neda's Voice

for Neda

Black hair lay limp upon the ground
as a shallow lake of blood
swam beneath her torso…

‘Neda! Neda!’
People cried her name.
Her head rested on the hard pavement;
the same pavement where she once stood.
Hollow eyes searched the crowd.

Wrapped in a shirt and jeans,
rejecting the ancient burqa,
Neda fell silent one summer's day.
Would her fight for liberty rage on,
or would it quickly fade away?

Friends, permit not the silent lips of Neda
to darken freedom's spark;
the same light that once shone
inside a young patriot’s heart...

by Nancy

Ironic: Neda means voice.

Re: Rx drug abuse
Many prescription painkillers are strong opiates, which is in the same class as heroin. Very addictive, and the body quickly develops a tolerance for them, requiring a higher dose over time to ge tthe same effect. Not all abusers want to get high. I'm only commenting on people suffering from chronic pain who are trying to alleviate their pain with higher doses and more frequent use. Brett Favre was in this category. Meds are prescribed 1 or 2 every 8 hours. Soon, you're taking it every 6 hours, then 4, just to beat the pain back. Then you're taking 3 or 4 at a time. It happens, and some patients hold multiple prescriptions from different doctors and fill them at different pharmacies. Some physicians knowingly enable their patients.

Dan Mendoza   July 1st, 2009 4:22 pm ET

I'm a dailey visitor to CNN. Your segment today, 7-1-09 on prescription drug abuse hit home. I live in Santa barbara, Ca. and just rescued my beautiful 21 year old grandson from the streets in San Diego, 250 miles south. He is addicted to the Rx world and is in a recovery program that is very impressive, it is operated by sober druggies founded by a young man with a famous name of Yater such as in Yater Surfboards.
I am amazed at the prevalence of the Rx world, it is appalling! My boy got started when he was a sophomore in hi school. We adults in the family could not detect his abuse, but his cousins knew that he was hooked. His downfall came because of stealing and forging anything to support his habit. The best thing that has happened is that he was caught !
CNN recently had a segment on the pain pill phenomena in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Users and dealers come from the four corners of the country because there are pain clinics in abundance and easy access.
Please keep reporting on this subject, the public needs to keep informed .
Sincerely,
DAN

Patricia Simmons   July 1st, 2009 4:26 pm ET

Hi Rick, it's great to have you back! I like your style of reporting the news. Why is it a shock that Michael Jackson would leave his dad out of his will? He hated his dad and any real Michael fan wouldn't care for him either. Joe Jackson is only interested in his 15 mins. of fame and how much more money he can get from Michael. I love it that Michael didn't leave him a dime. Michael made sure that someone other than his family will make decisions on his money. The lawyers will make sure that his children are taken care of, hopefully they will give his mother Katherine an allowance every mo. to take care of the kids and that's it. When the children reach a certain age I'm sure Michael made sure they will have something to help only them. On the news they talk about how people now have taken a new interest in Michael's music, I've never stopped and was looking forward to his new concert to hear his new music. You also hear how the Black community supports Michael in death, where have they been for more than 10yrs? They've shunned him and joked about him for more than 10yrs. I can't stop crying, mostly because I think of Michael as being unhappy and lonely. I miss him so much. Now people can't hurt him anymore. Sincerely Patty

Ramsy Darwish /Narconon is a scam. Review the victims by googling "scam Narconon-Battlecreek, Mich". He represented himself to me as an illegal drug user while I was seeking drug addiction help for my son. This experience cost me $18,000/3 mos and a 4 yr prison sentence for my son.

I’m not a loyal viewer of cnn I only tune in when there is a huge story. I have been watching the coverage of MJ on CNN and was very surprised to watch Rick Sanchez. I must say watching Rick for some reason left me feeling uneasy. Please reduce the amount of caffeine you consume the over the top composition you exhibit along with the hand motion and cutting off people only for you to talk endlessly is very unsettling. I didn’t enjoy your coverage for those reasons perhaps discussing sports would be more appropriate. It’s just way too disturbing to watch it’s not a state of emergency for you to be carrying on like that I can’t image your demeanor if it were.

Anyways thanks CNN for the great MJ coverage.

Robert   July 1st, 2009 4:45 pm ET

Rick,
It is very suprising that no one has ever tried to investigate what must have driven Mark Stanford to doing or acting in this way. I must say the wife should also be blamed. I am having the feeling that the wife must have contributed to Marks acting out. The wife may seems very innocent in public but she might not be a good companion in the house. When a man comes out in the open that he has a soul mate outside his house: The word soul mate means someone you could be happy with either in conversation or otherwise. Jenny Stanford should also be suspected for the bad marriage. I think that because of Marks position, Mark could have been suffering in silence but unfortunately things falls apart and the center holds no more. Think about this before we put all blames on Mark and afterall Jenny is not someone to behold without makeups.Mark wanted help but because no one would help him in the states that made him heads to Agentina

craig brigham, MD   July 1st, 2009 4:48 pm ET

I'm an orthopedic surgeon and teacher for over 20 years. Prescription drugs, especially pain killers has become a huge problem. Some facts you might want to know:
THE MAGNITUDE OF AMERICAN PAIN

The amount of prescription pain medicine we Americans consume is increasing at an impressive rate. In 2005 the most prescribed medicine in America was hydrocodone. (a common trade name is Vicodin). Over one hundred million prescriptions made this narcotic five times more prevalent that the number two drug. This represents a sixty per cent increase from 2000 to 2004. During that same time period, fentanyl (a powerful form of morphine delivered in the form of a duragesic skin patch, which Darla had tried) prescriptions increased dramatically.

From the time of my encounter with Darla to the year 2004, the state of North Carolina saw a four hundred per cent increase of the use of methadone (traditionally used in the past to treat heroin addicts) to treat chronic pain. In 2007 Dr. Kuehn and colleagues reported the following statistics in the Journal of the American Medical Association. In the U.S. from the years 1999 to 2002:
 Oxycodone (Percocet, Percodan) prescriptions increased 50% to 29 million
 Fentanyl (Duragesic) prescriptions increased 150% to 4.6 million
 Morphine prescriptions increased 60% to 3.8 million

Researchers from the University of California at San Diego presented statistics at the Society for General Internal Medicine on narcotic prescriptions in almost one million ambulatory care visits from 1993 to 2003. The percent of visits that resulted in a narcotics prescription increased 73%, from 4.1 million in 1993 to 7.1 million in 2003. Back pain was the most common reason for narcotic prescriptions among patients with pain. In the emergency room setting, narcotics were prescribed for 34% of back pain visits in 1993 and 52% in 2003. These data correspond with the National Center for Health Statistics reporting of physician’s prescribing patterns of narcotics from 1995 to 2005. In nearly all sub-groups the percentage of narcotic prescriptions doubled in that time period.

More recent data available in my state of North Carolina for the six month period from July to December of 2007 report that the number of prescriptions for controlled substances was a whopping 6,916,296. These data include all narcotics, valium like drugs and sleeping pills.

A HIDDEN PRICE TO PAY

The American pursuit of pain relief has had a trickle down effect, the costs of which cannot always be measured in dollars.

In 2005, the per cent of 12th graders who admitted to taking Vicodin was nearly ten per cent. About five and a half per cent of 12th graders admitted to using Oxycontin, the long-acting form of the more powerful oxycodone. Oxycontin is much more dangerous because if the pill is crushed or altered, the time-release properties can be destroyed and allow a fatal overdose. The use of prescribed drugs by non patients is called diversion.

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, in its report “The Diversion and Abuse of Controlled Prescription Drugs in the U.S.” stated:
…in 2003, 2.3 million teens aged 12 to 17 reported abusing a controlled prescription drug in the past year; 83 per cent of them reported abusing opioids…Between 1992 and 2003, the percent of teens aged 12-17 who admit abusing controlled prescription drugs increased 212 percent.

There has been a dramatic increase in the use of methadone in the treatment of chronic pain. Methadone is relatively inexpensive and is very long-lasting in the body which makes it a rational choice for one who needs very long term narcotic treatment. The problem, however, is that the persistence of this drug in the body makes patients prone to potentially fatal overdosing.

The incidence of deaths due to methadone overdose increased five hundred per cent in the past few years and parallels the dramatic increase in prescriptions of this drug for chronic pain. My state of North Carolina currently ranks number three in the nation for methadone-related deaths and like other states, it is clear that legal drugs are killing more people than illegal drugs. The most recent data have shown that over 900 unintentional deaths occur yearly in North Carolina due to narcotic accidental overdose and in 2005 the in-patient hospital costs to treat narcotic overdose exceeded twenty million dollars. The North Carolina Controlled Substances Reporting system, hydrocodone and oxycodone were dispensed to outpatients thirty eight times more often than methadone. In 2006, methadone was implicated in one third of the accidental fatal drug overdoses.

In 2004, the federal Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) reported the latest statistics on emergency room (ER) visits for drug abuse cases. Benzodiazepines (valium-like drugs) accounted for over 140,000 ER visits while narcotics, methadone, oxycodone and hydrocodone abuse accounted for more that 110,000 ER visits.

It is clear that the American pursuit of “stamping out pain” is affecting more than just those unfortunate individuals with chronic pain.
PAIN IS NOT THE SAME AS SUFFERING

If one simply looked at the increase of narcotic prescriptions that Americans have consumed in the past ten years, you could conclude that:

A) Americans have a growing epidemic of pain.
-or

B) We are the most compassionate country in the world in trying to address our “pain epidemic.”
-or

C) We are caught up in a growing labyrinth of confusing suffering for pain.
I choose C.

In our society we always blame the man and not the woman. As an educated society we should always try to look at things objectively. Where are the Psychologists in our society who I think should educate us about men's DNA. It's time to understand that by nature, men are visual while women are emotional. Why do we continue to fail to see this. Women should try to be on the side of their husband emotionally because they have that heavenly gift to direct their husband with love and emotions. It does not matter what we say or do God created us differently. Women are beautiful and men are handsome. Women have motherly feeling and emotion just as our creator has. When a woman fails to have emotion it will be difficult to be a good wife. She might be good with her children but not with her husband.

I like CNN. I cannot wait for everyone to get over the death of a rich child molester (Michael Jackson). I change the channel every time I see that its about that freak. Maybe the "Story Hunters" should focus on the deaths of people who have a reputation of good morals and people that have put positive footprints on this earth and in Our Country. I'm sure that family of Michael Jackson, care about him, but I don't. This story of his death is pushing aside the real important issues. There's plenty of juicy new developments on the economy or on Iran. ect. Please go back to normal. Thank you.

Enough of MJ. Sick and tired of hearing about the pedophile, while services to kids in California are being cut because the idiots in power are just messing around. Seems to me that if you nip problems in the bud, it costs less then if you wait until the problem is full blown.

Phyllis Soble   July 2nd, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Rick-You are terrific, but that's enough about Michael Jackson!!!

Richard   July 2nd, 2009 3:31 pm ET

I agree with you... MJ looked extremely thin. So how is it possible for a guy to APPEAR healthy? Drugs?

LaShonda   July 2nd, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Michael Jackson worried me at first, he appeared to be sluggish with exaggerated movements, but after the march, Michael Jackson proved why he is known as"The King of Pop!" No doubt, Michael Jackson was extremely thin, but he had the moves and stamina. He sounded angelic!

Richard   July 2nd, 2009 3:44 pm ET

San... I also agree with the other viewers... enough MJ!!! There are far more important things happening on this planet. Example: the death of Neda, the new offensive in Afgh, Wimbledon, the survivor of Airbus A310 plane crash.........

LaShonda   July 2nd, 2009 3:51 pm ET

In addition to my last comment, Michael Jackson worried me at first, while dancing beside the guitarist, his movement appeared sluggish and exaggerate, but this may have been the intent. After they began to march, Michael Jackson proved why he is known as "The King of Pop!"
Michael Jackson was extremely thin, but he had the moves and stamina to succeed. He sounded angelic!!!

marco   July 2nd, 2009 3:51 pm ET

hey Rick !!!! Enough of michael, if michael has 10.000 hard fans
in every state that is only 500.000 fans in the USA we are 300.000.000
people and besides that the fans do not see cnn news

Anne   July 2nd, 2009 3:58 pm ET

Hey, Crowley looks FANTASTIC! We need more than just a head shot of her! Is she headed for Hawaii in 2012??!!!

LaShonda   July 2nd, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Question? Why would these health care professionals continue to give this man IV drugs? The RN that he "begged" for Diprivan, stated that she gave him IV herbal drugs and IV vitamins. It is evident, this man was fragile and had a history of dehydration, his veins were probably in bad shape. Has anyone thought that he may have developed a DVT while a drug was infusing, that may have caused an embolism that lead to respiratory depression, ending in cardiac arrest? He had injection marks because healthcare professionals were constantly trying to find a viable vein!

LaShonda   July 2nd, 2009 4:14 pm ET

I always believed that IV infusion was used to provide a quick and direct route for emergency purposes. Why weren't these individuals that surroundened him daily, concerned with him not eating right or getting the right supplements before they had to insert an IV? What if a pulmonary embolism cause the death of this legend?

ilcattivotuco   July 2nd, 2009 4:19 pm ET

Rick – Please make news once again your primary focus. Enough Enough Enough Michael Jackson saturation coverage. Reminder – we're at war, Iran is in a state of flux, N. Korea is set to shoot off another rocket etc.

VONNA   July 3rd, 2009 12:03 am ET

Thank you for the coverage of MJHis fans want to know. No. one had a problem with the coverage of  Princess Diana,Elvis, or Kennedy son. But would like to know who made the media and commentators GOD, Judge and Jury. He was the greatest entertainer of  our time. A lot of us are tired of hearing about government scandals. Korea,Iraq,Iran, afghanistan, economy. It will be the same stories next week, next year that we are having now. Give us a break and let us hear about MJ. THE FANS WANT TO KNOW AND WE ARE WORLDWIDE.

Anita McCants   July 3rd, 2009 1:12 am ET

Hey Ricik, now that,s what I call GLAD TO BE BACK!! :D

Steve Obal   July 3rd, 2009 12:24 pm ET

Rick,

I respect the followers of Michael Jackson, but for those of us who are not followers, the barrage of daily, nightly and weekly updates is a tough pill to swallow. Why not limit the MJ issues to just one CNN show (e.g. showbiz tonight) and let the rest of us view things we consider to be important?(e.g. the rest of the world) He's been dead for awhile now. I don't know of a reason why the first thing I continue to see on any CNN show is more Michael Jackson. Is this because your upper management are big fans or do they really believe the feature news is only about this pop singer?

KYfan   July 3rd, 2009 3:43 pm ET

Thank you CNN for your continuous coverage of Michael Jackson. He is/was a world legend. For all those who are complaining on the coverage, watch something else!

KYfan   July 3rd, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Michael Jackson is IMPORTANT! Keep the news coming, please.

marcie jenkins   July 3rd, 2009 3:49 pm ET

Rick, comment on Sarah Palin not running for re-election. I think she is ticked off about the stimulus package . Will use the excuse as political propaganda. Watch & see.
Marcie from Denver

Jean King   July 3rd, 2009 4:04 pm ET

Why can't the media leave Palin alone? She's done nothing but good for her state! I wish she was our Govenor! Stupid media has nothing but negative stuff on her,how about talking about all the good she's done!!! The media is very negative lately anyways.

Jean King   July 3rd, 2009 4:20 pm ET

I think they should bury Michael in peace! Leave him alone now. Plus, why did the media not cover Farrah,Ed,and all the rest as much? I know he is a wonderful entertainer, but we have wars going on,

RICK SANCHEZ:

I WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT ON THE COMMENTS FROM YOUR BLOG RUNNING AT THE BOTTOM OF A NEWS BROADCAST BEING SHOWN AT THE SAME TIME. I FIND IT VERY DISTRACTING, RUDE, AND DISRESPECTFUL TO WHAT IS BEING SHOWN AT THE SAME TIME. THE UPDATES ARE BAD ENOUGH TO CONTENT WITH, BUT THE PERSONAL COMMENTS, ETC., ONLY TAKE AWAY FROM WHAT IS BEING REPORTED.

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT DISCONTINUED, OR AT THE LEAST, TO GIVE PEOPLE A CHOICE OF WHETHER THEY WISH TO HAVE SUCH COMMENTS RUNNING ACROSS THEIR TV SCREENS. IT IS DIFFICULT TO TAKE YOUR NEWS BROADCAST SERIOUSLY WITH THIS BLOGGING.

I FEEL THAT PEOPLE CAN GO ON-LINE FOR SUCH CHIT-CHAT/PERSONAL REMARKS.

EXCEPT FOR THIS, I REALLY ENJOY YOUR SHOW.

RESPECTFULLY,

Happy Birthday!!!! Hope you're having a great day.
Has anyone ever wondered if there is a connection between MJ's
wearing of a mask and Bubbles going bye-bye?? It's been reported that Bubbles became aggressive & there've been reports of lots of other primate attacks. Wouldn't someone possibly want to be known as having a bad nose job or rather problems with it than to let it be
known that your pet took a nibble of maybe a different looking nose ??
In Re: to Palin – Money is usually behind a lot of decisions. I think maybe she has lots of money to be reimbursed to Alaska & can't afford to remain Gov.

Karen   July 3rd, 2009 6:30 pm ET

Re: Palin's Resignation:
Todd's membership with a group that promotes an independent
Alaska rather than being a part of the USA could have something to
do with it also. Evidently she's been receiving some flack over it.
At any rate, I hope she stays out of politics. She rambles on & on
way too much! (She & SC Gov. have a lot in common.)

Paulene   July 3rd, 2009 7:55 pm ET

Hi Rick
Eventhough I am a Canadian and was not a huge fan of Michael Jackson. He was a part of my music life as I was growing up. I feel very angry about how the council woman (acting mayor) has reacted to the memorial that is being planned for M.J. Firstly in the news conference she repeatedly referred to the memorial as an event. It is a memorial ! Also I can't believe that she would have the audacity to ask Rev. Sharpton or the Jackson family for assistance for payment to the city. How much money, both now and in the future will the city's hotels, restaurants , tour bus operators and jobs will be gained from tourist's worldwide visiting Neverland. She should be ashamed of herself.

doug shutlz   July 3rd, 2009 8:08 pm ET

to suggest that, even in jest, that Sarah Phalin resigned because she is pregnant if the most insulting low life comment I could ever imagine. You and Letterman are both scumbags, you have lost one more viewer. I can't say I was a Sarah Phalin fan but you sure convinced me today that you are a bigoted, scumbag. You should be required to issue and apology and you should resign your position with CNN and save the embarrassment you create for those aroung you and afflillated with you.

Melinda Jones   July 3rd, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Hey Rick! I wanted to say that I don't believe that Michael Jackson asked for the drug diprivan at all. I think he would have asked for a normal sleeping pill if he couldn't sleep. He ate chicken and salad and wanted to be healthy for his tour. Does that sound like someone who wouldn't have checked out the affects of a drug? Sanjay Gupta said the you don't even get REM sleep with this drug, and your body doesn't heal while you are out. He was smarter than that. It is illegal to have that drug out of a hospital setting anyway. They should go after these people. They aren't enablers; they are murderers.

Raymond James Thibault   July 3rd, 2009 11:46 pm ET

Theres a few on your List that I have heard enough from. I am a Republican who wishes Rush and Newt would just shut up. The Party of Lincoln has it's first Black leader. These two brain dead red necks, No Sorry don't want to insult red nesck, these two idiots are only looking out for themselves. Send them to Iran. They would fit well with the Religious fanatics over there. Lets lump all the Right Wing fanatics together.

Rick.I think you're a great journalist. Why don't we see you anchoring the 'news' any more?

Paul Weddle   July 4th, 2009 6:31 pm ET

How can you even say such a thing about Sarah Palin. You defend Obama and the Clintons at all costs and then try to fabricate a story to smear a Repulican. I thought low down dirty speculation was left up to the tabloids, I guess CNN is now the media version. Congratulations on your place in history.

Hugh   July 5th, 2009 9:08 am ET

For those that believe in "The Tooth Fairy" and "Santa Claus", I wonder if they truly believe that Michael Jackson fathered the childeren called his. For those that wonder, a DNA would prove that he did not father the children and I wonder what Debbie Roe would say in her attempt to gain custody of her children.

Raymond James Thibault   July 5th, 2009 9:08 am ET

Hi Rick. Don't you just love Arm Chair Quarter backs and Back Seat Drivers. I used to get asked when I was in the Army 22 years, Are you going to do any work today. I would answer, as soon as you do, or what and break a perfect record, Or my work is so top secret even I don't know what I'm doing. Have a Good Day. Oh Good Job with the Iran thing.

Howard Steinberg   July 5th, 2009 10:00 am ET

Sugar coating the health Care debate, that what you all do. I sat on the board of directors of a hospital and insurance companies are constantly in between the doctors and patients, telling the doctors what treatments they will approve. Why don't you ever mention this? Are you afraid of loosing sponsor revenue? why do you allow the Republicans to drone on about how the Obama plan will put government between doctors and patients and never mention what is really going on in health care about the insurance companies? What are you afraid of? A real investigative reporter would report how much campaign contributions have gone from the insurance companies to the Republicans, but not you at CNN the hype/sugar coat news hour. You should all be ashamed of yourselves because by your refusal to drill into this issues the public plan will go down and our health care crisis will worse and millions will lack coverage, but hey that keeps the story going doesn't it?

Micharl Harrison   July 6th, 2009 6:44 am ET

Hello Rick,
News is news, but MJ has saturated the REAL news..enough is enough ! Get back on the economy please, and the REAL issues!

Mehdi   July 6th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Hi Rick
MJ deserve the attention and I feel CNN is doing a nice job working the story within the framework of reporting the news. Tell the senator to work harder on the economy since his party destroyed the economy, as I was laid off 38 days ago. Thanks Mehdi

Hi Rick,

Buenos Tardes, and welcome back! Enough with the M. Jackson news huh! Let the poor man rest. I wonder why it became such a media blitz, any ideas? It is extremely puzzling to me.

Not only are "we" spending too much time talking about Michael Jackson, but this was a grown man who hated himself. No one who loves himself does what he did to himself and pay other people to have babies for him who are not Black. This is sick, sick, sick.

John   July 6th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Rick,
The MJ coverage is blown out of proportion. I can't believe the attention he is getting. I don't understand it. Let the man rest. He was an unhappy human being.

Patrick   July 6th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

I think that Mr. Peter King should do what he does better and that is do his legislative job. As a legislator, he should have been aware that Michael Jackson was acquitted of child molestation case by jurors of his peers. For Mr. King to make his comment goes to show how respectful he is of our legal system, innocent until proven guilty.

Jackson was proved to be innocent and yet this man, Mr. King, called an innocent man a child molester. Mr. King's comment is very unfortunate and shows how uninformed he is about the law of the land which he suppose to be familiar with as a Legislator. Mr. King, keep your comment to yourself.

Patrick

DEAR RICK, EVEN THOUGH SOME PEOPLE LOVE OR HATE MICHAEL JACKSON, WITH ALL THE THOUSAND'S OF PEOPLE IN L.A. NOW WOULDN'T IT GIVE A BOOST TO CALF'S. MONEY PROBLEMS ?

ED MCCAULEY   July 6th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

It gets pretty bad when even Candy Crowley is invited to speak her views on this whole M Jackson fiascso. He is dead Let him rest in peace. I dont remember ANYONE that has ever been given over three and a half weeks of constant TV coverage It has gotten to be a joke. It is even worse that your wording of the poll question states " HIS ARTISTIC CONTRIBUTIONS outweigh anything else he did" As good and as much as he contributed, it has all gotten truly ridiculous. It is just like Rev. Al Sharpton with his latest inflammatory comments, that all they do is fan the flames of racism. With all the coverage he has received, and all the plaudits he has received, how can he possibly say that he has in any way been denied respect. And we wonder why we persist in having racial problems in this country.

King   July 6th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

Re: Steve McNair

Did anyone consider "honor killing?" The young lady is an Iranian, and like Arabs, Iranians consider honor killing as legit. Is it possible that McNair promised to marry her, and then changed his mind? Is it possible she is pregnant? She already brought shame to her family after being busted for DUI. Islam forbids alchohol.

Just speculating on a different angle.

I felt lost today, trying to watch the news. MJ has so saturated the news that he obliterated all other stories. Honduras? China? Obama and Russia? Used to be that I knew what was what...then, MJ died. Didn't matter that all this other important stuff happened, and other people have died. And I could have sworn on Friday, when you interrupted yourself on your intro that you said that Palin wasn't going to run again for governor. Being so disgusted by the MJ crap, I didn't watch the news again til today, when I saw she was quitting...Now I'm confused and

I'm lost.

james sloan   July 6th, 2009 5:51 pm ET

Dear Rick, The story about Elephant begging in Thailand is grossly inacurate. I live in Bangkok and know these elephants are not abused. Most of these elephants work and are only in Bangkok in the off season. They provide rides, photo ops etc. as a way to get feed. The main reason to get them of the streets of Bangkok is purely for traffic control. I'm sick of these B>S> animal rights ativists meddling in other countries when they don't even get their facts straight. The last time they fabricated a story about elephant abuse in Thailand, it was exposed to their embarassment. I've lived in Bangkok for more than 12 yrs, and know some of these elephants personally. They are very friendly, and comical. I ejoy their company more than some people. Jim Sloan, Phoenixville, Pa. & Bangkok, Thailand

Yvette   July 6th, 2009 6:29 pm ET

I think it was a disgrace what Peter King said, but that's what him and all Michael Jackson's critics do. They will do and say anything for money. Unfortunately so many people rely on them for the truth. Fortunately God will be everyones final judge, because he knows all.

Cristian of Newark   July 7th, 2009 2:07 am ET

Rick, it is time to tell the audience that the death of Michael Jackson is just a conspiracy. A charade, orchestrated by the dark forces of the country as another component in the pursue of deviating the attention that we must have on the failing economy.
From the badly rehearsed 911 call, to the fact that nobody can say, or will say, what supposedely killed the pedofile (Regardless of the technological advances of today.)
How many of us have seen the corpse? Will the casket be open so we can see what's inside? I don't think so.
Eventually we will know the truth. Yo no me como esa guayaba!
Thanks for your program on CNN.

Marion White   July 7th, 2009 5:53 am ET

My kids grew up on MJ. I agree with Rep, King. "To much for too little". MJ. was a very talented person, but I think he was a great manipulator. If he acquired Diprivan than he did so illegally. He says he would never hurt children and yet he dangled a baby over a railing and used children to satisfy some need in him regardless of whether he actually had a sexual encounter he acted inappropriately. For those that defend his actions I feel sorry for them and either they are in denial as a lot of humans are or they themselves have done similar things and use this as a way of rationalizing their own behavior. I empathize with D. Chopra. I really felt his pain and frustration with society during the talk sessions. People like Brandos' son I believe are exploiting MJ. and Rev. Sharpton always shows up and makes a circus out of every tragedy where an Afican American is involved. Shame on him. The truth is MJ. had a lot of money and he had no control over how he used it. He felt in control with money and it could by him anything including sleep. Now he will sleep forever.

you got it all wrong! in Honduras.

Why are you distorting the truth of what is really happening in Honduras. You will be embarrassed when the truth comes out that Zelaya is a corrupt prresident taht has link to drug traffic and broke the honduran laws. Wake up man.

Cristian,

Maybe you should learn how to spell before you display your ignorance so freely. Michael Jackson will be remembered for his humanity, music and his love for the world! which included you Cristian from Newark. The correct spelling is Phedophile, which Michael Jackson was not!

Scott   July 8th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

Rick,

Your reference to people in Afghanistan today 8 July as "Afghanis" is wrong.
The Afghani (Pashto/Dari: افغانۍ) (sign: ؋; code: AFN) is the currency of Afghanistan.
"Afghan (s)" is the word used to refer to the people of Afghanistan.
I am going there this fall with the Canadian Army and thought I would share some of my cultural awareness training with you.

Cheers

Clark   July 8th, 2009 3:41 pm ET

Does anyone have a copy of the "Jackson 5" cartoons from the 70's? I just realized, we've seen a lot on Michael Jackson's past, his family, music video excerpts etc.... never saw any of the cartoon clips of the "Jackson 5". They were great. It'd be nice for my kids to see them...and to get another perspective of MJ.

“So far this month, ten brave American soldiers have died in Afghanistan as we press an offensive against the Taliban that is being led by a former GITMO detainee. These are the men and women who should be honored by Congress and our country. They can’t do the “moonwalk,” nor do they live in Hollywood mansions. But without them, America is lost.”

Jordan Watson   July 9th, 2009 11:07 am ET

I wish everyone would stop referencing Michael Jackson concerning all the coverage he is getting on his untimely death. MJ was a universal figure, like it or not the world loved him! We salute and honor our soldiers everyday. I pray for them each and every night. But for millions of people MJ was like a long distance, yet, dear friend. Let people mourn this man, without blame to him because he was so loved. For me, I did not know him personally, yet my heart aches for him! you cannot minimize those feelings for countless fans.

Douglas Crow   July 9th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

We should stay out of Iran. No one interfered with us during the civil rights marches, Kent State Masacre, Chicago Democratic Convention, or the million march on Washington. The people of Iran have to reolve their own problem.

Muhammed Nasser   July 9th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

The Iran situation is getting to be old.. We are selves are not really democratic, remember Al Gore and Bush. Who stole the election. Where were the mullahs. How about our neocons that took us to an illegal war. That one election changed the whole world.

We should stop talking about Iran let them be and work out their problems like we did in our history. Civil rights, women suffrage, etc. Just because some hate us there doesn't mean their government is bad. They are more democratic then the saudis, israelis, egyptians, jordanians, and syrians. The government is working for the benefit of society and of higher purpose. We can't impose our ideals or culture on another society. When you start respecting another country's government they start respecting you. Very important. The young who are protesting likely don't remember shah and how corrupt he was.

Muhammed Nasser   July 9th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

The whole Islamic World is very young and slightly immature. What that means is thats all emotion without a lot of thought. The iranian reform tactics is without the sense of the greater good of Iran. Just loose gracefully without senseless loss of life.

Balance   July 9th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

I am very confused about the Islamic world. The problem is not Islam. Islam has worked in Andalucia, Baghdad, and Ottoman. The problem are the leaders. Ever since the Ottoman empire fell the last Caliphate in the Middle East. There has only been problems. Inventing governments that dont work for the Muslim World. No government is perfect but there are specific recommendations in Islam and in history of what works. Thats why our imposition of imposing western style democracy would never work. Islamic Theocracy is like Israel, value the Quran or Old testament as the rule of law in all branches of government. There is no separation of church and state. Israel makes it work, why not here. Israel is not a democracy where is the Palestinian "third class vote".

We need stop asking for regime change. We need to stop an economic blockade on people and forcing people to be like us. We as a nation aren't so great= drugs, prostitution, kids out of wedlock, poverty, powerful lobby groups, incarceration, our sport players, evil ceo's, and music stars make millions of dollars- having 3 different memorials, and our nurses and teachers get minimum wage. Which society is better. Maybe we need to ask if the whole world if it consumed energy, food, money, like the US would there be enough to go around. A diversity of governments and culture is good for humanity- and may open up our ownees.

Rick, with unemployment at record high. 8.8 million Americans out of work, many for no fualt of themselves...good people who want to work and provide for their families. I found an EMPLOYMENT PLACEMENT / RECRUITER web page at Careers In Grocery provided by the Latro Consulting Group. I went to a job search and noticed on everyone of their job profiles listed it states under the Requirement catagory that "unemployed individuals will not be considered for employment for their clients". What is this? This is Discrimination and this company, web page should be exposed and their clients informed of their practice.

What are your viewers thoughts?

WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

AIRBUS HAS BEEN GETTING SUBSIDYS FROM THE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES FOR YEARS AND BOEING HAS TRIED TO GET THE US TO DO THE SAME TO NO ADVAIL.

BUT NOW WE OWN GM TO SAVE JOBS, BOEING WOULD BE MORE COMPETITIVE AND CREATE MORE JOBS.

SOMETHING ISN'T RIGHT ABOUT THIS.

Hi Rick,
Please do not interview Kevin Casas-Zamora again!!!!!!

You presented him as the former vice president of Costa Rica, but you didn't mention he was forced to quit because of a memorandum (called the "Fear's Memorandum") in which he presented a plan carefully designed for assuring the popular support for CAFTA in the referendum to decide if Costa Rica should have become part of CAFTA or not. HIS MASTER PLAN was to generate fear to the movement against CAFTA based on false statements!

The "Memorandum" was discovered by a group of journalists who work at the "Semanario Universidad" (an independent weekly newspaper which belongs to the University of Costa Rica). They published the investigation and it resulted in Casas's resignation. People in Costa Rica are still suffering the consequences of such antidemocratic, and dishonest actions. The political use of fear as an official government policy severely affected the level of trust of the population in the government.

He IS NOT the right person to talk about Democracy or transparency in a referendum process. It does not matter if he is now working at the Brooking Institution! He is dishonest!

Rick,

I was shocked to hear Pat Robertson state that President Obama has run up the largest peacetime deficit of any president. Peacetime? We are in two wars!! I would wonder how the families of our deceased soldiers killed this week would comment on this warped right rhetoric! Pat Robertson owes our soldiers an apology!

Thank you,

Peggi From Cal   July 11th, 2009 8:59 pm ET

Yeah, i wish we as Californians had benefited from MJ's death, like previously asked in a previous post. It might have benefited the city, but not the whole state, which is going down the toilet....which, btw, RIck, is a story unto itself. People hear of medi-cal services being cut off, but do you know what that entails? For example, my husband is disabled, and on SSI-Medi-Cal picked up the monthly share of cost, which to you may not seem a big deal. He just lost his leg, and was going through physical therapy to learn how to walk again. The 1st leg was covered, but with shrinkage, (which is normal), a new leg is needed, which will cost $1000. Which would have been picked up between SSI and Medi-Cal. So, paying for a $1000/month share of cost (to pay for physical therapy and his leg, not including doc's visits in between to make sure his heart doing ok (6 way bypass 18 months ago for that), we have very little to eat. Oh, yeah, did I mention we still have rent, a 10 y/o special needs son and I'm disabled? And to think, Rick, we are one of many families affected by this budget crisis at the homefront-how about the ones who get IOU's and can hardly find a bank to cash them to pay their bills?

We voted for change, but we still have the same ole gov...thank goodness he can't run for prez with his accent.

Dr. Richard Stafford   July 13th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Rick,
As a white male, I indeed bring to my own work the perspective of all my life experiences as a white male...that's what I am. But I learn from females and those of other races and cultures, too. When Sonia Sotomayor says she is bringing to the Court her rich experiences as a female, Hispanic judge and attorney, that's a fact! So, what's the beef?
Do we question a white, male justice who may have brought his own perspectives as a white, male judge...and then made decisions that may have benefited his own gender and race? Why do we make "white/male" the baseline...when it souldn't be. The Constitution is gender and race blind; the Senate should ask questions beyond gender and race while confirming Sotomayor.

Randy McLeod   July 15th, 2009 7:28 am ET

Rick, just read a story about the proposed health care. I have one or two comments to make. 1. Sounds to me that the politicians on the 'Hill', doesn't like to share this health care they have already have in operation for themselves and their families. 2. Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri (R) made a comment in this story that this health care would ' kill jobs '. What jobs? Not the insurance for sure. Why? If he was smart enough, those people who work in the insurance business also sell life, home, auto, motorcycle and sometimes flood insurance. Where are these jobs to be ' killed '? Sorry, one more item, I'm on Medicaid in the state of Fl. I have been told that Medicaid is statewide (sic). Not true. A person from one county CANNOT go to another county and expect services from Medicaid. And this is state run? But funded by federal government? What a life, lol.

Carol Moody   July 15th, 2009 11:47 am ET

Rick....I don't know how long you all have been in this country.....but this morning I was watching cnn and you were talking to your Mother....I cound not believe you had to talk to her in spanish and she had to talk spanish also!!!!!!! I believe, if you live in this country....you should be able to speak english! Especially you, in your line of work, should speak english......I would see to it that my Mother would learn english or not talk to her on tv..... Thank You.....

Sharon   July 16th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

Rick,

We continue to talk about murders in Chicago, New Jersey etc. When is this Country going to have a discussion about gun control. We continue to watch young people die, and yet the issue of gun control is neatly evaded. A frank discussion about the pros and cons is what the US needs. This is far to important an issue to evade because of the fear of political consequences. I do not believe the Second Amendment has anything to do with this issue of gun control.

You were great today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so personal and I related

Layth Jato   July 18th, 2009 2:32 am ET

Rick,

It is things like these "Wise Latina Parade" that you and your show started to encourage, is what opens the door to others to take advantage of our weakness and attack us at home.
We need a president like this one to bring pride in what America stands for. See below:

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote:

"IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '

"This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'"

"We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'"

"Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'"

"We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us."

"This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE".

"If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted."

Dear Rick,

Please go after Sen. Jim DeMint re. his remark that if he does not get his way with the health bill he is going to "cause pain." He has illusions of grandeur. Es claro, el es loco.

Raymond James Thibault   July 20th, 2009 10:17 am ET

Hey Rick, instead of Iran, LOOK HARDER AT CONGRESS, follow them around show every one hoe the selfish money grabbing idiots that people elected in are ruining the Country. Congress has Great Health Care, Great Retirement, Security, The travel where ever they want. POWER HUNGRY, Money Hungry uncaring people once they get in office. HEY Congress Impress Me. Put all your pay checks back into the Treasury. Pay for you own medical and insurance, security and transportation. Or have one of the Special interests pay for. DO YOUR JOB and Get off the Welfare system you live on now and Get TO WORK. You know Rick, Politics and Big Money. We need Prayer, Caring and people stopping the BS of Business as usual. I quit watching C-Span. Watch them do nothing of Value why? Get the Spot light on Congress. Maybe like Iran, we can build a Democracy here at Home, where one is supposed to be.

Isabel   July 20th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Rick, hopefully Obama's Health Care Program will be nothing like our system here in Canada. Free health care isn't free; we pay with taxes, and sometimes with our lives.

Eric Silveira   July 20th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

I'm a member of a Medicare Rx Part D plan and have to take a stroke
preventive prescription medication which I've being buying from the
mailorder pharmacy and paying a COPAY of $ 211 per 90 pills under the Plan (not even in the Donut Hole). Recently I mailordered the same drug from a Canadian pharmacy, drop-shipped from Australia to my home in Connecticut, the TOTAL cost was $ 137 for the 90 pills. The drug company name is the same, both are brand names, not generic, one made in New Jersey and the other in Victoria.
Why is their TOTAL price only two-thirds of my COPAY under our Plan?

Bob   July 20th, 2009 7:40 pm ET

Rick when will the Country and CNN admitt that the Healthcare Plan will never pass. Th wealthest country in the world does not care about providing Healthcare to people that need it. They would prefer to give pay rises to are do nothing congress. The Healthcare Care Ind has won again and are legislators has turned its back to the people they represent
