What an opportunity! CNN's Twitterin'est anchor Rick Sanchez was invited to sit on the panel of the social media/journalism gathering 140 Characters Conference in New York. Did he expect a friendly chit-chat with new-wave journalists about the joys of social media? No, that's not what the conference was about. Did the audience go easy on Rick and the other so-called mainstream media representatives? Oh, no.

It was all about how Twitter/MySpace/Facebook and all those other social media sites are changing the way the world communicates. And as we're seeing in Iran right now, sometimes, those resources are the only conduit through which information emerges from a strongly-controlled environment.

It's new. It's exciting. And Rick Sanchez is CNN's pioneer into this new world of instant and mass communication.

Tell us what YOU think. How do you see the news landscape in this instant-gratification age of Twitter/MySpace/Facebook? Please leave a comment below these pictures from the 140 Characters Conference.

Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook make it easier for the news
to connect with a wide audience. More and more people are
tuning into the news because the news is allowing their
voices to be heard. People are able to give instant feedback
on different matters.

Rick, it was a pleasure sharing ideas and vision...looking forward to the next time. Dave, looking forward to meeting you! For those looking for a blow-by-blow account of Rick's thoughts during the panel, here's my summary: ((edited))

Where Is the Change?

There was supposed to be a major change in the operation of our government but it just didn't happen.

As a Democrat of long standing I am disappointed that most major government functions are going about the same as under the Bush Administration. President Obama now states that our troops won't be out of Iraq in sixteen months, but some will still be there for several years. Any health care reform will still include the HMO's that have been jacking up the costs sky high. A single payer system, which is the way to drastically reduce costs, is not under consideration. Hundreds of billions of dollars are still being given to the greedy lending institutions that cannot be trusted. Big business is still free to exchange American workers for cheaper foreign workers. There is no talk about a complete campaign financing system paid for only by taxpayer funds so the control of our government by big business can be stopped. We are still attempting to compete in a global trading system even though our labor costs are ten times greater than many of the other countries The corruption of government office holders is still at an unacceptable level.

Positions change, but it seems that all politicians operate about the same on major issues and just follow the dollar.

Hey Rick, I watch your program every chance I get. There is a topic that I have never seen anybody discuss, and I wonder if you would be willing to do it. In light of the recent attack at the Holocast Museum shouldn't somebody in your position be addressing the mental process of the people that kill without concience simply because they believe themselves to be superior to everybody else. Apparently the German people have a lot of these haters. What makes them like this? Why do they have these thoughts? Somebody should ask these questions in public, maybe some people will see themselves and try to change their ways. Just a thought, what do you think??

Anita McCants   June 20th, 2009 10:04 am ET

Rick,
People threaten to stop watching you simply because you state
the obvious. I guess some people rather you tell them what they
want to hear. They only want to see what's wrong in those they
don't like.

Rick~

There is nothing greater than the power of being in one accord, all things hidden shall be revealed; the use of public media is a great gift to establish a real presence, a presence established for the people, by the people. The greatest fear is the government's power to take out our satellites that transmit( as GW Bush proved) and continue to allow the people to inneract apart from mandates and control.

elaine   June 21st, 2009 8:37 pm ET

RICK, I TRY TO WATCH YOU EVERY DAY. I WANT TO BRING A COMENT SENT TO DON ON THE WEEKEND. SONEONE SUGGEST THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA IS NOT TALKING OUT ABOUT IRAN, HOWEVER HE HAD TIME TO TAKE HIS DAUGHTERS FOR ICECREAM. I THINK THEY WANT THE PRESIDENT TO CALL IRAN THE AXIS OF EVIL AND THEY ARE LOOKING FOR A FIGHT, ONLY IF THEY KNEW THE HISTORY BETWEEN THE 2 COUNTRIES THEY WOULD BE THAT LOOSE LIP. I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THE CRITICS WHERE IS THE MUSLIM WORLD NOT ONE OF THOSE LEADERS HAS SPOKEN UP. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAST PICTURE.
THANK YOU.

Randy McLeod   June 22nd, 2009 8:00 am ET

Rick,

I'm going to send my own "2 cents worth" to Sen. John McCain. This is the reason why I didn't vote for that man------ he wants to fight, a war. That is the only thing on his brain!!!! President Obama was handed this mess that America is in and I believe the people has forgotten this. And he is especially right (I think) not to 'meddle' in Iran's affairs now. The President has enough on his plate right now then to get involved with Iran unnecessarily. Don't you think that this country (U.S.A.) is more important than Iran right now?

Thank you for your time.

Randy McLeod

P.S. BTW, Mr. McCain was on "FNS" (of course) spreading his BS. Please excuse the expletive. No, I heard about it, I don't watch FOX, just you and CNN.

Fred Smith   June 22nd, 2009 12:58 pm ET

Be careful about getting involved in Iran!! Everbody seems to forget Kent State and the FLQ crisis in Quebec, Canada. All looks familiar to me!!

WANDA HASSERTT   June 22nd, 2009 3:34 pm ET

THE PROTEST IN IRAN HAVE TO BE BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE.. IT IS NOT OUR PLACE TO CHANGE THE WORLD. WE HAVE ALOT TO DO HERE TO CHANGE OUR OWN. I PRAY FOR THESE PEOPLE AND HOPE THEIR VOICES ARE HEARD. WE DON'T HAVE TO SIT BY AND DO NOTHING THOUGH.. PRAY

cosmos   June 22nd, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Just heard the democratic strategist Miss CONDONa say it's all about Iran and not the US. If history hasn't taught her a thing, so was Hitler in Germany. It was all about Germany then too eh? Stand up and say something clever Missy!

howard   June 22nd, 2009 9:01 pm ET

I heard that Obama's primary care doctor came out and said Obamacare was a terrable idea. Is this true?

Tito   June 24th, 2009 10:54 am ET

Hi Rick,

Why in the world US citizen do not want to have Guantanamo detainees in their state. It is a sign of a huge hypocrisy...If these detainees are guilty as they seems to be therefore why not keep them in the US soil ? US citizen are good to lecture the rest of the world but when it is time to take their responsibilities on this matter they seems to walk away.........

Gloria Sullivan   July 3rd, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Maybe, Gov. Palin want to be Senator now. She get a lot of air time on Fox News. Maybe, Fox will offer her a job.

Gloria Sullivan   July 3rd, 2009 4:02 pm ET

Rick, I bet the other News Station knows exactly what is going on, because they give her all of the air time she needs. They probably helped her get another job somewhere. She has enough money now from her book deal. I believe someone from Fox News hooked her up with something else. I do believe Gov. Palin love her people in Alaska.

Gloria Sullivan   July 3rd, 2009 4:14 pm ET

Hey Rick
Gov. Palin is a lady and she knows exactly what she want in life. I lnow there is something better for her ahead. She does have good friends on Fox News and they will help her. She loves Alaska's people. She loves her family. This is a praying lady and when God speaks to her she has to obey. I think she is just obeying the voice of the Lord. There is something better, and she has her book deal, and a good husband. I admire her for following her heart. There are plenty of companies that want a smart lady like Gov. Palin. She is not afraid to stand up. I didn't afree with some of her remarks toward President Obama, but she has to live with that. She said somethings she shouldn't have, but bottom line she love her family, and the people of Alaska. She problem is getting ready to accept something else during the fall of the year. I respect Gov. Palin, and I love Bristol, her daughter, because she is trying to help other young women.

Gloria Sullivan   July 3rd, 2009 4:18 pm ET

Rick, Gov. Palin can get a job working with special needs children. She does a good job with her child and I know she can do more helping others. I know there is a better job for her and she can stop fighting the State of Alaska.

Karl   July 9th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

Rick, I was watching HLN earlier today and i saw a report on how a teenager built an electric car all by himself using only the help of google and using his own resources. I find it incredibly funny and rediculous that someone that young can find a way to convert a vehicle from using gasoline to electric energy, but yet these big auto companies still haven't come up with any ulternatives to the cars we use right now, even though they have greater resources and they pay so much, to qualified engineers to improve their technology.

Katharine Anderson   July 9th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Absolutely the Steve McNair PSA regarding suicide prevention should be aired with a caveat at the end stating that "In July 2009, McNair was murdered in a murder/suicide by his girlfriend." That would be powerful!

Babyleg   July 9th, 2009 8:23 pm ET

Hey Rick! Great show you have. I guess I have a question/comment in reference to the Air Mcnair. I'm not a officer. But I was wondering why one of the writers or even a private citizen like myself didn't bring this question up. Why the police from day one close this as a suicide. When #1 the guy that called 911 made a report on day one that someone called him and told him that there were two injured persons in the apartment. Keep in mine that the police said this apartment was locked from the inside, and the caller has a key to the apartment. According to the caller. Who made the call? was it the lover before the final shot? was it the real killer? or is the caller involved somehow? #2 On day 1 the cops said the didn't find the weapon that did the fatal shots until they finally moved the woman body, because it was hidden under her body. The problem with that's unless she shot herself in the head, place the gun down and lay on it. Then what they are saying could not have happened. The police said Steven had 4 shots in his body. We got that. They also said he was laying on the couch, we also got that. But the next thing I can't get. The claim the woman was found in the same couch with steve. Laying! Again Laying! weather it's on her back or chest. It really does not matter. They said she had a bullet in her right side temple. Which obviously means she use her right hand to blow her brains out. Now please try this out yourself. You could NEVER! Never! blast yourself at that location and the gun ended up under! your body. Think about it. If she was sitting on the couch and do that, then she would either slump down. Falling slightly forward and remain seated. The gun may fell on the couch, floor or just remain in her hands. Obvious her body would not be covering the gun. The next method is she was laying next to her man. Once again it does not matter if she is laying on her back or stomach. From either one of those positions the gun will be at worst case at around shoulder with from her body. And once again the gun will either remain in her hand, fall on the couch or fell to the floor. I'm no doctor, scientist or sexy dancer. But I would need to see that physically done in a reenactment. Even plastic man couldn't do that. They need to question that caller and find out who called him and give him this news.

Pam   July 9th, 2009 8:31 pm ET

No. His artistry outshone any allegations of impropriety.

CC   July 10th, 2009 11:31 am ET

Rick, I don't know who else to tell, but I find Tony too cheesy in the morning news. I miss Don Lemon, why doesn't he anchor more?

sam   July 10th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

i have arthritis in my back and i get out of bed bent over every morning. the only way i can stop the pain is to take one oxycodone in the morning when i get out of bed. then and only the can i have some sort of normal day in my life. i have had shots in my back and nothing works better than the one pill a day. i don't think one pill a day is and addiction especially if it allows me to play 9 holes of golf twice a week because without it i can't play at all. i am sure that if my back was not hurting i wouldn't take it at all. i think that the addiction comes from the abuse and not from the need. the only thing that i can't shake is smoking. that's the most addictive drug in the world. a person that gets high on any drugs are prone to use any drugs available. i think some prescriptive drugs are abused because of it's availability from some doctors that are really drug pushers. i could not get this drug if i was not hurting but the people who are not hurting, usually get this drug because they have money and that is drug dealing.

sam   July 10th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

if there is another stimulus package i think the money ought to go to the people that need it the most and that is the american citizens. after all it's our money anyway. that way the economy can be built up from the bottom up. we can't keep giving money to the people who messed up the economy with a top heavy management in the first place. if they cut back on management maybe they can pay the workers what they deserve. after all the workers are really the ones that make the money for the company. managers, vice presidents and ceo's don't do any thing but draw large salaries.

Robert   July 10th, 2009 6:02 pm ET

I like you Rick – But your just an employee like everyone else earning a paycheck. It's a bummer, I know!

Treating your own reporters like stars is wrong. They are Reporters patting themselves on their own backs for telling stories about other peoples hardships. Michael Ware should be a star! HE has done something REAL! He gets, writes, produces and answers for the news he is publishing. WOW, there is a worthy candidate for Stardom & hand shakes. If Michael Ware were to do a story on a swimming pool and racism like CNN just did, he would have declared that it wasn't the pool employees, but pool visitors who caused this problem. He wouldn't have caused a person to loose their job because the reporter was lousy or just a sadistic person holding back information to cause problems. Fire that reporter Rick! Get back to REAL News! Not sadistically FAKE NEWS.

Why does CNN interview their own reporters, interview their own people and give us reports like this one about their own employee? You have 50 states and news abroad which is enough each day to keep CNN on the air!

Come on people, can't you get back to the grass roots of being a NEWS channel? FOX News may be taking over soon.

In short – We don't care about your reporters, we want REAL News with reporters who get out there and interview REAL Heroes, Scientists, Victims and such. Take out video cuts where the reporter is sitting there shaking their heads like they understand or think they are worthy of air time. It's an interview with someone real who has done SOMETHING Real! THEY deserve all the spotlight! Not the reporter who lives on the backs of people who are worthy of news! If I were Ted T, I would fire the next one that did that NEAT little trick with the camera or making fake news out of something like the swimming pool.

They are just reporters! Make them earn their paychecks like Michael Ware does. He is a GOD compared to those sitting and reading news to a camera! I bet his paycheck isn't even close to Wolfe or Sanchez's'! He is worth 10 times their paychecks! He understands the rules and lives the life!

PS. Rick, go out with Mr. Ware! You look like you may be gaining a few pounds.

Frank Conforti   July 23rd, 2009 12:08 am ET

Hey Rick, would like to start of by saying I am a retired police officer from south Fla and I always enjoyed your coverage on channel 7, always great news and great coverage telling both sides of a story.

I would like to comment on the new buzz about the President, before anyone says I just an anti-President person, I am not ,I voted for him.
But I think that he is trying to hide something because he will not propduce his berth cert. .
And for those who claim that if he produces it people will claim that if is a fake. I 'm sorry if he does produce it ,it can be supported as real or a fake by other documention, everything has a paper trail , hospital records, doctor records and so on.

If you go on usgovjobs.com and apply for a goverment job, they ask you to produce a birth cert showing you are a US citizen, so my question is that if a citizen is made to produce a birth cert. to prove they are citizens then why not the President.

Thanks for keeping them honest.

john thomas   September 8th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

Yes, I'd like say a few words about the parents pulling their kids out of school or not allowing them to hear our President speak to them about the importance of a good education.
I think it has something to do with the three Rs. If you would do a survey I think you would find them redneck, racist , republican, and probably white.
Oh yeah, I'm a honky

Rick, i am shocked and surprised that a man who calls himself a Pastor would make such despicable statement about killing (or wishing the President ) the President of the United States of America, the greatest country in the world die and he is not being arrested. Common, something is wrong! Somebody should have him arrested.

WANDA HASSERTT   September 8th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

IT'S A SHAME THAT PARENTS FEEL THEIR CHILDREN AREN'T SMART ENOUGH TO THINK FOR THEIRSELFS, TO THINK ONE SPEECH IS BRAINWASHING... OH, MY BAD THESE ARE THE SAME PEOPLE WHO BELIEVED IN W.O.M.D. WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

michael paul   September 21st, 2009 4:37 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez;

CNN is not any more of a fair and balanced news organization than Fox News and you are not any more of an honest news reporter than Glenn Beck. I am truned off from watching CNN news primarily, because of the extreme bias presentation. Because I criticize you and CNN does not mean I like the other news organizaitons any better. You have presented the issuse and I am responding. Just look in the mirror and be honest with yourself about reporting the news and not selling the news. Check the ratings. Why is CNN losing ratings and Fox News is leading the ratings. If Fox News and Glenn Beck is/are truly lying, the public will figure it out and the ratings will react accordingly. I do not care where my news information comes from, as long as it is honest.

Lana Merrill   October 9th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

The Nobel Peace Prize was an appropriate honor for Pres. Obama.

If you will simply READ the Nobel citation, then it is clear why Pres. Obama won the Prize. Look what he did at the U.N.: he got more nations to align against rogue nuclear powers than any other world leader has thus far been able to do. The rest of the civilized world is grateful for an American president who will extend himself, his nation, and his power for better peace and reconciliation. After eight years of we-don't-talk-to-our-enemies George Bush, the rest of the world was hungering for change. Yet Americans kavitch about an honor paid to our President.

My question: why doesn't the media talk up good things about our President? You had no trouble singing G.W. Bush's praises for nearly eight years – right up until it became clear the tides were about to turn.
