The US has already cause worldwide economic kaos , has started two wars and now it looks like some wackos here want to start two more , Iran and N.korea , that'sone way of solving the unemployment , foreclosures and corruption . Right This country has got to big for it's brigdes they want to mind every body else's business and can't solve their own problems !

Matt Hickey   June 16th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Rick STOP having Ken Ballen on. He doesn't know ANYTHING! What do you think the people of Iran are going to say when they are asked who they will vote for? Give me a break! That and the fact that Musavi was told he won, it was announced on the Iranian news and the fact that 40 million ballots were hand counted in just a few hours. This man has ZERO credibility. Using gallop to ask Americans a question is VASTLY different from asking people in Iran a political question.

alfredo   June 16th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

What is happening in Teheran and maybe in other major cities, is not fantasy, its a hard core true protest. But is it really the feeling of the iranians majority ?? It reminds me the of Venezuelan protests after the recall referendum in 2004. Unfortunately J. Carter was right.. the results were accurate and the Caracas perception unfortunately did not reflect the whole country. The opposition has worked hard but still has an uphill battle.

azar   June 16th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Hi Rick
I just want to remind everybody in the world that if Ahmadinezad gives up his unlawful election then all the Iranian's government members who are all related to him (family member) need to give up their position in government. It means all people in Iranian government are related and if Ahmadinezad goes out of the game then all others' position are in jeopardy.

Anna Neumeyer   June 16th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Sahra Palin does not need to be in plitics if she can't take a joke.David Letterman has been on for years and he jokes about all polititions. She is only wanting free publiciity.

Annahita Mahdavi   June 16th, 2009 3:41 pm ET

Iran’s election must be annulled. The votes of 80% of people have been thrown out.. Ahmadi Nejad is not an elected president but a selected one by the extremists and the Revolutionary Guard that is acting as fascists and killing, arresting and torturing protesters in Iran. We ask President Obama to not to validate Ahmadi Nejads presidency. Obama and all western official must hol all political ties with ahmadi Nejad until this situation is resolved.

Annahita Mahdavi   June 16th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

My cousin from Iran was just chatting with me and said " It is like living in a cave with no windows, no doors here right now, they have shut down all communications, cell phone, phones, internet, and are on a rampage to attack the houses with satellite dishes and take the dishes away".. She also said 7 people are confirmed killed in the streets today, 5 men and 2 women..

howard   June 16th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

If Letterman had made those sorts of "jokes" about the Obama kids and if he had called Michelle a slutty flight attendant would Obama have been quiet. Would you think that Ok? What if he had attacked you or your family? That's what our countery has decended into – support for bad taste.

Martin in Shoreline, WA   June 16th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

Everything is killing us. I'm not sure if anyone has noticed, but everyone dies. Americans need to stop being such sniveling cowards, and just eat, drink, and smoke anything you want. Enjoy your life, instead of letting every whiner in the country scare you into not drinking milk.

Wade Hayward   June 16th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

The election in Iran was clearly fixed! As far as the numbers from the independent polling It,s really hard to say they are accurate based on the fact they were taken three weeks prior to the election. Really the world will never now the truth, unless a new supervised election is conducted without corrupt and bias officials overseeing the results I mean come on how can 50+Million votes be tallied up in just two or three hours. It,s terrible to see the violence and bloodshed taking place when all they wish for is true results and honesty. I,d like to believe that is what we enjoy in the U.S. and Canada but I can't help but feel there is a little bit of dishonestly that takes place in our two countries. At least it is much more believable.

I watched Bill Maher and his comments about President Obama's speech to the AMA. I don't want Obama to be anything like George Bush (dishonest and a liar). i would like to see Obama more forcefull on the health care issue. If we gave the AMA their way we would remain where we are. Doctores are over paid. There is no primary Doctor there is just a person who guesses what is wrong and sends you to 4,5, or six other's who have specialized in one body part so they don't have to know about the other body parts. I have been a patient and I have worked as a nurse for 32 years. There are a few good doctors but I have to say that most of the doctors are just money grubbers looking to do surgery for their next vacation, and the AMA is made up of these same Doctors.

Re: David Letterman's Vile Verbal Attack on Gov. Palin's Daughter
I am the mother of a daughter and grandmother of a granddaughter. Shame on Letterman! How vile! How disgusting! I have watched Letterman for many years. I will turn him off from now on. FURTHERMORE, I WILL NOT BUY PRODUCTS FROM HIS SPONSORS. We women are not sexual jokes. Our mothers, daughters, granddaughters, sisters are not sexual jokes. He should be arrested for advocating rape of a 14 year old. Again, shame on him.

I'm with you Martin.

And Obama has told many lies already. "No pork in the spending bill", remember that one? "Reading Miranda rights to foreign mass murders is a stupid idea". "No special interests in my administration" "No Military Tribunals at Guantanamo." We have to have that "stimulus" money right this minute or the Country will collapse and never recover". "I'll pull the troops out of Iraq." "I don't want to control the car companies." The list goes on and on.

Go Leah!

Ron Bonett   June 16th, 2009 11:44 pm ET

Rick,
In discussing our food providers you mentioned raising chickens. I don't know much about them, but I have done a little homework on pork. Swine are inseminated in a facility that leaves alot to be desired . The nursery swine are taken away from their mother at 6 weeks and taken to another facility called a CAFO ,(confined animal feeding operation). This is a building or barn 72' X 402', that usually houses anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 nursery pigs. The pit below the barn is where the feces and urin of these animals fall. The one I'm familiar with, the holding pit is capable of 1,290,000 gallons of manure. The bathroom for the workers also gets dumped into the pit. The building is ventilated to the outside by a series of exhaust fans that keep pulling in fresh air. Being raised in a crowded and unnatural condition has to be compensated with antibiotics to keep down mortality. at about 55 lbs they are then shipped to a finishing barn to get to about 250 lbs., a desireable slaughter weight. Since Dr.'s are concerned with giving us antibiotics for fear of antibiotic immunity to treatment. Why should we be consuming pork and veal that is raised with excessive amounts of antibiotics? The pork industry or any other meat industry doesn't have to label how their product is raised, but even a cookie mfg. has to label the ingredients on the package. The truth is that the pork is no different in taste than a competitors because they are all raised the same. There's also an enviornmental consequence due to spreading the manure on the ground for fertilizer at a rate of 6,000 gallons per acre when the pit is full. Does the antibiotics wind up in the ground water? they already know it winds up in streams and rivers that ultimately flow into the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. It would be enlightening to have a discussion with some people in the field.

Arran Anderson   June 17th, 2009 10:27 am ET

Animal Rights activists are not the only ones upset with what President Obama did to that innocent fly yesterday. Amnesty International claims that because it was done on public television, that it violated international law.

Chef kathryn bari-petritis   June 17th, 2009 11:26 am ET

Hello My friend,
I so enjoyed your show when I can catch it and often go to your site to see what your doing when I can't.
Yesterday I was so touched profoundly that you covered a subject that effects me and hundtreds of other Health Conscious people everyday.
I am a Holistic Chef for many years (and studying Nutrition also) and give ongoing lectures and workshops on ,"True Nourishment for the Body" and taking ACTION now, and being very Pro-Active in the community on that issue to heart that you were speaking of.

You did mention on the show that , you would be following up with the two guests again. One was a Nutritionist and one guest a FDA executive.
I would love to be on your two show show, concerning what is happening to our Food Chain.
I am directly you to my website to see my background on this subject (see mjy articial on ;The Future of Food, Is it Living Or Dying".

I am so passionate about helping people find out the truth.
I could offered your show so much info, because the Nutrionist speaks about the Bio-chemistry of the food, and I lead people to the application of perparing Home Cooked Meals, and not always trusting food bought on the run. Where to find the purest and food, and how simple and fun it can be to whip up some healthy meals with love and gratitute
I know your guests don't have that must time to speak, but I truly believe that I could Inspire your audience with a few minutes on AIR.
My website is: ((EDITED))

Rick, please let me know what you think.
God Bless you and your family
In Joy, Chef Kathryn

Chef kathryn bari-petritis   June 17th, 2009 11:34 am ET

the above is my comment, thanks

Laura Thompson   June 17th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

I guess by reading the comments on Food, that people have decided to comment on other stuff that doesn't pertain. I for one am concerned especially on the water we are provided with to drink. I have big concerns about that in particular. Food is another concern and something we need to take seriously. We try to watch carefully what we put into our bodies, but it's so hard to do. When it's all about making money anything goes even our food/water.... beware!

Rob   June 17th, 2009 1:06 pm ET

yeah its called over eating! Rick why are the most un-healthy Americans mostly low income? We talk about universal health care for everyone but the highest costs are by far from low income people. Shouldnt we require especially for ones who recieve free health care to get on a scale and force them to quit smoking for their free benefits?

Jim Steuding   June 17th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

You coverage of the most recent events in Iran is vital to us . . .in this country. Keep up the good work.
Its inersting to note how 'the people' of Iran are finding ways using the 'net' etc t get their story out.
Maybe some day the present leadership; in Iran will be forced to cave in to public dumand!

A culture of consequence for chaos. It's about time. As an educator and someone with previous experiences in the financial industry, it appears that for the lonest people who create chaos are usually the ones who get rewarded while the quite ones who try to do right become victims. This is prevelant in many industries, not just the financial.
It's about time we re-define our culture by rewarding the good and punshing the bad.

Ben Elliot   June 17th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

After talking to many family members and friends in Iran, I have been told that the core of Para-military forces that are used to crash people’s demonstrations and silence the resistance are imported Palestinian/Hezbollah from Lebanon and Israel. They are behind the most heinous acts and all the killing.

michele acosta   June 17th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

I really appreciated your segment on Food, Inc. Taking your family to see the movie so you could have a family discussion is true Family Values!!
Your show is excellent. I wish more shows would take the risks that you do and cover issues that are important instead of hours on Palin/Letterman.
Thank you Rick!

Hey Rick,
Why in the world are we talking about Iran and their voting problems, when we can't even get this country's straight?

A. Is Minnesota voting done yet?
It has only been 5 months.
And how about the Bush fallacy? The Supreme Court has to make our decision about the Bush Cartel?
And we are worried about Iran?
Please, give me a break.

Larry W   June 17th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

What's happening in Iran is terrible. Thank God we here in Minnesota and the U.S. don't resort to violence but, use our courts. However, with all that said, we still can't find a simple way to count everyone's vote.

Dear Rick ,
1979 Iranian revolution was high jacked by bunch jackels named
AYATOSHAYTAN mean literary like satan ! just like AYATOLAH that means like GOD !!!?????
this current situation in iran basically has nothing to do with either side of election ! and everything to do with freedom , basic human rights , and right to choose and the way of life .
these backwarded jackels have nothing in mind but filling thier own pocket as soon and as fast as possible , because they know for fact that thier days in numbered .
Please do keep up with the good work. and keep in mind that you and the rest of American media owe to the Iranian people the very same opportunity that was available to AYATISHAYTAN in paris in 1979 .
thank you

Rick: I have to say that I commend CNN, for the great job that all of you have been doing since the begining of the uprising in Iran. Your network hass singehandedly become a catalist for keeping the story on the air and give courage to all Iranians in Iran to fight and continue their struggle to achieve greater freedom. I am now proud to be an Iranian American.

Roger E   June 17th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

Rick,

The unrest and upheaval in Iran and the shaky government in North Korea proves that these third world counties should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. The philosophy of possessing these weapons is predicated on stability. The mind set of these counties is not one of protection but on offensive aggression. Whether on its neighbors or on the world stage.

Its the loaded gun syndrome.... it will go off! unless care is taken to see that it won't go off on a whim.

howard   June 17th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

Given the mindset of the current administration, thr nuclear capability of Iran, North Korea and anybody else who wants some is assured.

chattykay   June 18th, 2009 8:18 am ET

Lets support the people not only in Iran but all the people around the world oppressed by their governments. Unfortunetly, they most likely will not prevail. Never the less, we can hope they do , so that the hate from the ruling party, toward America and the rest of the world, will go away. We can only hope. The world is full of wacko tyrants. Hey where is freakyfran?? Love her comments.

howard   June 18th, 2009 9:05 am ET

When it comes to throwing off opressive governments, I suggest we start here.

Hey Rick. I recall many years back (the 70's I think), we had lots of problems with food, to include additives and hormones. Well, one night in Johnny Carson's monologue, he said that the time is almost here, where lard, a beer and a cigarette will be the safest things for breakfast.

Charlie.

Vicky   June 18th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

Rick, doesn't it stand to reason that whoever has control over our food, the seeds that grow our food, how our food is made and what is put in it, has control over us? Do you know how to get seeds? Did you know that you can't grow a vegetable from the seeds inside of it anymore? Back in the day.....you could cut open a cantelope, take out the seeds, dry them and plant them next year. Not anymore. If you think the oil companies and the drug companies have power....wait till you see who controls our food and seeds. :-)

MSNBC has their female, blond, big smiled, smirking Republican strategist constantly trying to make a silk purse out of all the Republican's pig's ears this year and CNN has Cheri J. doing the same. She speaks over Rick Sanchez-trying to make her talking points before she forgets her memorized rhetoric-until he is required to insist she stop talking and follow the current conversation. When addressing Obama's foreign policy on Friday's show, she quoted Ronald Reagan as often saying that one needs to "Speak softly and carry a big stick"...that was FDR Cheri, not Reagan. Perhaps you should read a book or two (that would be in the 'history' section of Amazon)...you might squeeze one in during one of your hair appointments. Gads.

george salim   June 20th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

press is crying for injustice done to the iranian people by the iranian government, where is the american media when jews kill innocent arabs by hundreds a few days ago president jimmy carter while visitng a site bombed by jews said that he had to hold back his tears.
jews are the first who are blind of holocaust, they are doing same to arabs what was done unto them by hitler.
amarican injustice towards palestinians is crime against humanity. if america has courage to stand upto iran then it must do same to jews or else keep it's mouth shut, and sanchez you as well i have not heard a one word of justice from your lips.

Carolyn   June 20th, 2009 7:39 pm ET

Hey Rick~
as a former food factory worker, I must say YES. Aspartame is in over 3000 products; gum, drinks, medicine and other food products Aspartame is responsible for over 90 different illnesses and symtoms up to and including heart failure, cancer and tumors! It was originally created as an ant posion when a lab tech accidently tasted it on this hand and it was extremely sweet. The Director of the FDA in the 70s would not approve Aspartame for many years. Reagan gets into office he an Rumsfield ( the person trying to market aspartame at the time) fire the FDA director put thier own guy in an that very year Aspartame was approved.Oh yeah! over 75% of food related health complaints up to 1980-1985 were aspartame related. That's when they decided not to take any more complaints! There's a resolution.
England and other countries have ban Aspartame and many states are trying to stop the sale of Aspartame through the court system; New Mexico, and California are among them. This is just one ingredient among many that is being used to posion the American people for the past few decades. Population control at its finest?

Carolyn   June 20th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

I have another comment, one that weighs heavy on my heart. How white is that black man in office? I am white and even I can see the need to stop the violence and slaining of innocent people in Dufar. As a black man one would think his duty to his own race would go beyond an apology to decendants of slaves? Is this his ditch effort to appease his own race? The lies will all be exposed and the truth will over come.

howard   June 21st, 2009 12:37 am ET

Then why do the Arabs in Palestine invariably create some atrocity whenever peace talks look like they are going somewhere? Why do they blow up buses and weddings and playgrounds? Why do they continue to lob rockets at Israel to provoke them? If you punch someone in the nose, you can expect to get punched back.

Obama who likes nothing more to blab all the time is strangely silent about Iran. The people in the streets obviously care what we think or there wouldn't be so many of their signs in English. I hav't seen any in French, Russian or Chinese. He would rather interfere with our friends and allies in Israel.

ely   June 21st, 2009 7:38 pm ET

you are biased against ahmadinejad. why dont you ask me who voted for him? there is 20 million basijis in iran that would vote for ahmadinejad, so why is it impossible for him to get his votes? you are helping a plot to over throw him. what democracy?

Nehemiah Quijote   June 22nd, 2009 10:01 am ET

Hi, Rick

Whenever I got the chance, I watched your program and I am appreciative of your honesty and "straight-forward" ideas when tackling essential national issues.
I came to this country from the Philippines in 1987 on a Tourist Visa. My first wife who was a Nurse me to convert my Tourist Visa to Dependent Visa.
However, having this Visa we were not allowed to work (legally) and our Social Security Cards were marked "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT". Despite of this, we beat the system by applying minimum-waged jobs. If an employer don't require us to physically present the Social Security Card we push through with the employment but when they do require to see the Card, we will not come back and continue looking for other jobs.
I am a College Graduate but having graduated from a third world country most employers only considers me as a High School Gradaute which is a "slap on my face".
My impression before I came to this country is that, this is a land of opportunity, hopes, equality but for more than twenty (20) years in this country I've never experienced this positive outlook. All I got are heart-aches, discrimination and becoming a "ghost" in the American Society. My being is lost. I experienced "culture shock".
I have a son from my second wife (she is also a Registered Nurse) who was born in this country. He is the only one that holds me to stay foot and sacrifice the "bitterness" of the American life. Sorry to say, Rick, I have not seen "my pot of Gold" at the end of my rainbow. There is no equality in this country. Racism is still in the minds of most white people.
History dictates that all of us irregardless of where we came from are all illegal immigrants, except the Native Indians. They owned this land but was grabbed from them by force by people who came from Europe, England particularly.
I will share with you an anecdote: 'there came a group of people from far away hungry and weary. They crossed the seas because they were being presecuted at their native country. Arriving on a strange land, they knocked on the doors of the inhabitants and asked for food and shelter. They were invited. fed and given shelter. But then after sometime, they ransacked all their possessions, ejected them from their house, grabbbed their lands, and told them to live on a piece of land they reserved for them, and furthermore, they told them we will protect you". I believe this is the real USA.

I am so hungry for accurate reporting of ANY news in this crazy place we call earth. All of it is filtered, rehashed, and convoluted to meet the needs of the reporter, the network and the advertisors. I am sick of sound bites, clips on replay, and don't forget the yelling and screaming of the minority and the extremists who are for some strange reason given a sounding board without any consequences for teh vitriole they spew onto the airwaves! Remember the television show in the fifties in which the investigator stated "Just the facts ma'am, just the facts." That is exactly what I want, "JUST THE FACTS". I am intelligent enough to arrive at my own balanced conclusions if I have the facts straight.

Denise   June 25th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

Thank you, Rick, for this 5 minute piece on Food, Inc. I have also watched the movie. I have been a food conscious person since 1980. I am a 52 year old African American women and I am proud to say that I am in very good shape and look and feel 10 years younger. Why, because I eat very little of today’s food. I have a very low tolerance of the food on the market today. My diet consists primarily of raw and cooked seaweed and I live on self prepared organic vegetable and fruit juices, herbs, olive oil and apple cider vinegar. I spend long periods of fasting. I have learned to detach from today’s food. Rick, I cannot eat the food. I cannot drink the juice. I can drink 2 cups of diluted juice in gain 5 pounds in one day. I literally feel my body bloating and swelling when drinking juice. I wish that the American public would become more conscientious with respect to food and help bring natural foods to our children’s plates once again. This is devastating what is happening to our food supply. Again, thank you Rick, for this piece. No one else is brave enough to do this.

Anna   June 27th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

Rick part of the problem is that most people in the US are unaware of what goes into their food. If I were to go to a grocery store that had honest labels, I would not be purchasing anything that was genetically altered or injected with antibiotics, or steroids, or a cloned animal, or even milk from a cloned animal. I believe that if the American people were given the choice, they would be more careful about what they eat, but it is a huge secret and you don't always know what you are eating unless you shop like I do. I only purchase organic veggies, free range hormone free non-genetically engineered meats and so on. I grow organic fruits and veggies and prepare my food and my children's food at home, and I know what goes into it and them. But not all stores label their food with the whole truth. It would be nice to have truth in labeling so we are able to make better choices.

kim   July 1st, 2009 8:49 pm ET

Rich I have driven a semi to pick up produce and take back across us many years. I was in Salinas, Ca several years ago, and the companies KNEW that there was a problem with the produce and kept selling it to the American people. I saw it on the local news out there, while waiting for a load. They had all kind of professional people going out to the fields trying to figure out where the problem was coming from. I feel sure the professionals worked for this Huge company, that furnishes most of the produce sold here. Nothing was ever mentioned about it. I told my daughter to quit eating salads from a MAJOR hamburger chain, that got their produce from there. If you don't believe me check out archive footage from Salinas local news.

I just heard that Jordan Chandler, one of the children in the Michael Jackson molestation case came out and said that Michael never touched him and that his father had put him up to him. Can you investigate?

Prince   July 3rd, 2009 3:23 pm ET

I'm glad CNN's been covering MJ thoroughly. I would like to hear more about Michael as a friend and father though, rather than simply the legal stuff like his death investigation and the Will.

I typically watch foxnews, but they don't seem to want to provide as much Michael Jackson coverage. I believe he deserves to be honored in the news coverage, and that he should even receive a state funeral.

Plssssss.....enough. MJ lived, entertained, did drugs, lawsuits, custody etc. etc. etc. With all that is going on in the world don't you think reporting on this to the point you are is excessive? I don't care. I care about news. If I cared about celeb gossip I would hit the blogs or watch ET. Come on, you are better than this.

Can we win in Afghanistan? Depends on if the russians or chinese provide arms to the "bad guys" like we did in 80-81. Maybe we just should have left it alone back then?? I wonder how we would feel then?(do unto others?)

Is anyone surprised about the Iran election?...Welcome to Democracy!
The FIRST thing needed in a real democracy are FAIR elections! Otherwise it seems like a facade government thats controlled by and benefits only the rich...like in this country!

It's amazing, as much as I dislike Sarah Palin, she was a breath of fresh air; no MJ stuff. Really do we need Michael Jackson coverage 24/7 every day for 10 days now?

Eric Silveira   July 5th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

I have just one word to describe Sarah Palin: pwinsetuthosinse,
person who is not smart enough to understand that he or she is not smart enough.
