Occasionally, in this biz, we get to do something that cuts thru the bla, bla, bla. While I try everyday, some stories really matter and can change lives. The story of a dying Guatemalan 18 year old who many of you decided to help after seeing his story on our show, is one of them. His mom and dad will now be able to come and be by his side perhaps for one last time. This is the America we are. An update today at 3pm east.

Rick,
Thanks for your very informative and professional commentaries. I appreciate how you call it like it is even when your collegues don't. You are a valued asset to CNN. keep up the good work.

AV   May 22nd, 2009 11:48 am ET

The story was heartbreaking – and reminded me that while I may not have had the best year (who has) – it was nothing compared to what this young man has been through.

What courage! What tenacity and what love he has for his parents.

Like everyone else – I may not have a lot of money right now. ...

but..

it costs $25 bucks to send Juan some flowers ...

or

a check written to him for $25 dollars can help keep his family here a little longer.

Thank you CNN for airing this story and reminding me – that even in these tough times – we must help one another!

Hello Rick

The day you aired the story on the dying boy's wish to see his parents, tugged at my heart strings. My son, who is chronically ill and disabled was also watching the story.
We both agreed that Juan should be granted his wish, as it would be the ultimate gift he could ever receive. My son said it would make him forget about the pain of his illness and bring some love and joy into his heart to see his parents again.
Today, I mailed off a check for the family, with the realization that it would help Juan and his family in these difficult times.
As I can attest firsthand, what it means when a child's wish is granted. My son has his granted a few years ago and the joy it brought to him was amazing, as he says "I will never forget and it was the happiest day of my life".
Hopefully Juan will be able to say that, once he is reunited with his parents.
Thank you Rick, for bringing this story to our attention.
Prayers go out to Juan and his family.
Thank You

This isn't about the subject....but I'm curious as to why we can't just e-mail Mr. Sanchez? Why do we have to connect via this goofy Twitter, My Space, and Facebook? What's wrong with good old fashioned e-mail?

With all the monies poured into truth serums in the 60's and 70's why didn't DC/GB administer these drugs to the "terrorists" instead of depending on just waterboarding?

park henry   May 22nd, 2009 3:40 pm ET

dear rick I love your show! I watch every day and I watch the twitter Boards! Anyway, I was thinking maybe if the media stopped giving Cheney any thought he might just go away. He is such a traitor to this Country. Follow the indightments that are surely coming his way.

Thank you for the upbeat stories they are really needed by the word right now. Love YOU!

The news can do good, if it chooses to do good. There is good news as well. This is just an example of the good will people want to show. No one ever asks for misery, no one wants war, no one wants violence but that's all most people see. Keeping the love alive, is possible through CNN. Thank you for such positivity I've been seeing in your broadcasts lately. You can help wake people out of the stupor of fear, and bring them into the light of love.

Can this boy's life be saved with a heart transplant?

Rick:

The way the former Powell chief of staff explained how the former VP ran the decision-making for the Bush administration makes it seem like the way some people equated "Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith." VP Cheney, who can be equated as Chancelor/Emporer Palpatine, fabricated a war so that he, or in this case his crony former Pres. Bush, who can be equated to Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, can have supreme control of the Republic. A funny thing happened on the way to supreme power - democracy took hold!

Nuheart999   May 22nd, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Rick, we need to hear MUCH more from Lawerance Wilkinson. This guy has got it together on all fronts. As far as I'm concerned Dick Cheney can go straight to hell!!!!!!!

He is a perfect piece of crap and I know ZREO contributions he has made.

Did Larry say % deferrments???? When was a foot soldier in Veit Nam we called that a COWARD.

Maybe it's a good thing after all, since he probably would have shot someone in the face or shot himself in the foot to get sent home!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep on keeping on!!!!!!!!!1

When is this country going to do something about ALL the police abuse that goes on everyday. Police officers rarely tell the truth. Seeing all the video's of police assault's is unbelievable. Once more this police officer that pushes this individual should be arrested.

Jessica   May 22nd, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Please keep this story alive and don't give up on Juan's chances. Surely enough money can be raised for his medical care if the media helps to keep people aware of the need. Juan says, now that he's seen his parents, that he is going to fight his illness. Let's help him fight. Thanks.

Now that the credit card bill has been passed . When does it go into effect?? My interest rate was raised fron 7.9% to 23% just in the last 30 days .. Now if this bill does not go into effect till next year this gives all the credit card co a year to raise to out landish % so by the time this bill goes into effect it's too late for all of us since they will raise and raise so there won't be any need for the bill except on new credit cards.. Will this bill make it so our % will go back to where they were???

JM   May 22nd, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Many times in life we forget how important it is to help others. We find ourselves caught and lost in our indicidual finances, material goods, and other forms of distractions that pull us apart from what holds true value in life, the gift of giving. The story of this dying Guatemalan 18 year old shows just a small part of the good that comes when Americans, and people in general open their hearts and mind to help others...... It's a beautiful thing.

Rick Avila   May 22nd, 2009 3:49 pm ET

Rick,

You are a quality commentator. We need more stories like this. We don't need or care about MIchael Vidks and his possible return to the NFL or how much Britanny Spears is spending. We need quality reporting and un-biased that is clearly missing from the main-stream media!

Rick Avila

Very powerful story about Juan....really puts things into perspective....i also wanted to comment on the Wilkerson interview.....MAD PROPS to him....finally.....Cheney has talked more in the last week than he did the 8 yrs he was in office.....he should be "shaking in his boots".......the policies were wrong....we can finally not be so scared as an american traveling around the world....it is nice to be "liked" again.

Susan Whirlow   May 22nd, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Love your show. How is the bill the president just signed going to help us that the credit card companies are already ripping off. Our rates have already been raised and our credit limits lowered with no warning. As we pay down, they lower our rates more. Discover just lowered our rate with no warning to below what we owed. We have never been late on any of our cards and had just paid Discover card almost 2000. in the last 2 monthes for charges from our vacation. We have our credit rating monitored and get an update every 3 monthes. This is killing us and we will never be able to pay off the cards at this rate. We are senior citizens and still have a decent credit rating. The credit card companies are ripping people off that have balances.

It's nice to see the good old-fashioned human spirit at work. I hope the same spirit will be involved when Americans decide the fate of the other 12 million or so illegal aliens.

RJ   May 22nd, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Rick, ya-ya good for Juan, while we`re helping out Juan dont forget to remember the men and women who have died for this country to give people like Juan the same rights as our citizens and sometimes even better. Hey Rick how about a big salute to the dead who have served their country as much as a person can!

CrystinaW   May 22nd, 2009 3:52 pm ET

What a an inspiring story...and YES!!! there are wonderful, human beings...Angels.....all around us!
After watching and listening to the story on Cheney which makes me want to turn off the TV...I'm glad I didn't!!!
Thanks for bringing us the story of "Juan'! I pray his story has a 'happy ending'!
I have a suggestion....maybe if the media stops paying attention to Cheney...he'll go away....far far away!!!! Our great country needs to heal from the horrors of the past 8 years...if we keep giving him the limelight, the healing will take longer.
Again....thank you to you and CNN for all the great work you do!

Rick, I'm a retired RN. During my time in the cardiac catheterization lab, we did procedures on numerous convicts including a convicted child molester. It is not uncommon for prisoners across this country to recieve transplants of all kinds. And you guessed it, we the tax payers paid for them! Can't we manager to transplant this poor kid! We have money to murder 1/4 million people in Iraq. You can't tell me we don't have the money to pay for this kid to get a transplant! I would ask those who can change things for this kid to step up!

this is a nice story and I'm glad it worked out for this boy..the reality of this is the boy was here illegaly and if he was home where he should of been this story wouldn't of happened..

Rick I disagree with Ms. Banfield on the officer who tackled the young man. First he was unarmed and at the time wasn't brandishing any weapons. He came to a stop and was leveled way too hard by the officer. If he was considered to be a suspect in a violent crime, the officers should have drew their weapons and taken him into custody in a peaceful safe manner.

I've watched the video several times and that tackle was completely unecessary. The officer should have grabbed him during the tackle and taken him down correctly.

Problem I have is being a tax payer in all areas that one can be taxed in and pay for health insurance with the standard 80/20 and I`m one accident or health issue away from losing everything and my ability to raise my 2 year old effectively like one would want to. Its a tragedy playing out all over America and its got to stop! The working middle class tax payer is being squeezed for every last drop and its going to kill this country! How about the poor and the rich giving back to the guy whos been paying for all this bailout and free giveaways!!!!!!!

Jeanne D-P   May 22nd, 2009 4:03 pm ET

greg   May 22nd, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Hey rick if this guy in seattle was a relative of whats her name? would she still be as forgiving of the cop?? and buy the way this cop was already up on the guy where he could of detained him in a different manner than running the poor guy into the wall like a linebacker!!!

Sunny   May 22nd, 2009 4:12 pm ET

What is wrong with you people? Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for the boy and my heart goes out to the family. But I would like to know who is paying for his medical treatments? If my tax dollars are paying to care for someone who came to the U.S. illegally and I can't even get health insurance for myself, I have a problem with that.

PAUL EAGLIN   May 22nd, 2009 4:16 pm ET

on friday 22 may 2009 about the police officer who tackled the man in seattle, I heard your female guest comment, I am a retired chicago police officer with a total of 32years service 22yrs as a supervisor.

that police officer was wrong, wrong, wrong.that man was in plain view, with no weapons to be seen, and with that many police officers on that scene, he could have been taken without incident, i believe that the police officer who made the tackle should be fired, and the rest of those officers suspended. even if this guy was wanted for a felony, this type of action was unjustified.
thank you rick.

RJ   May 22nd, 2009 4:17 pm ET

Martin   May 22nd, 2009 5:57 pm ET

It is sad that this young man may die, and I am glad he is being helped. Having an ill daughter has been a burden on my family and as a American citizen even having some health insurance hasn't made things any easier , we struggle and barely make it month to month .The cost of taking care of this man costs all of us and if only the people here were something more than dishwashers and barely supporting themselves whitch most of them are , it wouldn't be so bad . I pay my co-pays and the illegal infront nof me gets his daughters prescription free is wrong and we really need to stop subsidizing these peoples lives in our country The majority of them really need to do it right and obey our laws, for instance the D.W.I. list Saturday , every other one is from Mexico , really ,really nice.

Flenda   May 22nd, 2009 7:00 pm ET

I want to help Juan stay alive and see his parents for many, many years. Can the money I've donated be used to pay for his hospital bills while a new heart is found? What can done to keep this young man ALIVE?

RJK   May 22nd, 2009 7:38 pm ET

Why is it that everytime I see an opponent of the Bush admin, particularly a veteran, they can help but get off topic and criticize Cheney's deferments during the Vietnam War, as if it's illegitimate for a politician who didn't serve to send soldiers in harm's way. Using that logic, Clinton and Lincoln fall into that category, along with Obama, since he's keeping soldier's in harm's way in Afghanistan and Iraq. And that also holds true for Mayors and Governors who keep police officers and/or firemen on duty if they themselves never served in harm's way. The issue was Cheney's speech. There's enough to debate in that alone.

D Marquis   May 22nd, 2009 8:52 pm ET

Rick, I enjoyed the story about Juan and his parents able to come to see him.
I feel that God was working on both ends–CNN reporting about his illness and the way that everything worked out to get his parents to the USA. God does move in mysterious ways and I feel that his parents know the Power of Prayer and Trust in God.
Please keep us informed of his health and how long his parents get to stay in this country.

Michael Mauzey   May 23rd, 2009 12:31 pm ET

Harvey Johnson   May 23rd, 2009 3:13 pm ET

I saw the piece comparing Michele Bachmann with Barney Frank. Whereas Barney Frank may or may not be "reviled" by the right I can say without hesitation that Michele Bachmann is not "reviled" by the left. The left finds her at best and worst laughable and not even a serious politician. How about John Boehner next time for someone to "revile"?Now there is a truly disgusting example of a right wing politician that those on the left "revile".

In regards to Cheyney, he is definitely exposing himself as the Architect
of the Iraq War. He is also exposing the fact that for 8 years, he is the one
who was running our country into the ground. It is time for him to keep quiet.

We now have a GREAT new President, we don't need to hear from you Cheyney!!

Ricardo, have you ever stop by VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars).?
Have you ever talked with handicap member of American Legion?
Have you ever seen or talk with a American Paralized Veteran?
Do you know that there is not such thing as terrorist? Of course NOT/
They are PRISIONERS OF WAR. (NO MILITARY UNIFORM) tHAT MAKES IT EVEN WORSE. War rules dictate if you are the enemy and you do not have uniform on you when you are taken prisioner you are considered a SPY. If you ever did a military in USA Armed Forces you should know that the military will put you to death. PERIOD. You are not an American, you are rebel and enemy of all Law Enforcement.
Pray God to have a tough police officer at your side when some one is making a ball of shit out of you. You are the kind of people that love to put logs on fire. Do you have any skeletons in your closet?

Would you please announce to all the cities in the USA that they can save 30-50% on their street lights using their present lights or 50-75% if they use LED lights by writing a grant by June 20, 2009 to Washington DC because of the stimulus package. You may contact Glendale, AZ,to ask them about their experience with their new lighting system.

I was talking with my sister this afternoon and she works for a company in Lynchberg, VA and she was telling me about the grant money, the savings that cities could realize, and a city in the USA that already has the lighting and monitoring system in place. My sister's cell phone is 540 905 9242. Her name is Pat Barber. I am sorry I can't remember the name of her company. I just thought how much cities throughout the nation could save in money and energy. They just need to write a grant by June 20, 2009.

How can we ask our servicemen/women to face down our enemies in Iraq and Afghanistan and be unwilling to house GITMO prisoners in our own country? When did the Land of the Free become the home of cowards? We can successfully imprison these terrorists, and we should not expect other countries to do it for us. It is our responsibility, plain and simple.

Rick,
Let Arrianna Huffington know the Lincoln Douglas Debate was not a classic showdown because of the content....it was because Lincoln was expected to lose and Douglas was outmatched and apparently very liquored up. Her attack on you was disingenuous at its core because she clearly does not understand that the debate is famous because it vaulted Lincoln to the Presidency not because it was a close contest! School this over rated loud mouth...I'd love to mop up the floor in a debate with her...she couldn't carry my water to as debate in college!

Hope you can show at least few scenes. You will not believe what you will see. Please help us avoid in Venezuela what happened to Cuba when the world fell for Castro's fantasy Robin Hood story. Do you think CNN will allow you to show some of the material ? We believe you would, question is whether CNN will. Is that Oil money, not Chavaz Friaz, more powerful than moral duty to tell the truth on TV ? We shall see. All the best and millions of Venezuelans will be most grateful if you take the time.

Human are the best system of the world, at the moment, we are using less than 15% of our capacity. So the only thing we need is to increase our own efficiency. And we don't need any computer for that.
The cosmic system provide any information's needed. So the only thing you need is to be connected to your soul and not to thje basic human instinct. I don't think that hicthing and touching nose will be helpfull.

North Korea's Nuclear Test

I am totally disgusted with the North Korean Government. On this day, we respect and remember our fallen brothers and sisters who died for our country and for all Americans. Today, the North Korean Governent disrespects our Country and more importantly disrespects the memories of our fallen heroes. I herebly suggest we eliminate their capabilities and abilities immediately. Allow the Chinese to help the Koreans rebuild after the diabolical leaders are removed from humanity and delivered to the gates of hell where they belong.
God Bless America and please give the courage to our President to swiftly act and protect us and the world from these nut-cases in North Korea.

Hello Rick, I am uploading an iReport on the following:

- 8 new cases of Porcine Flu have been detected after a study from students in a school in the Dominican Republic, just last week, CNN en Español infromed of 6 Venezuelan students that were in a school trip here got ill in Venezuela and were diagnosed with the same. Two days later, the Denver Post writes a story of Peru students with the same Flu leaving here from the same school trip.

Funny part is, i haven't seen, read or heard, news regarding these outbreaks in the island, authorties rather keep a tight lid on it.

The danger of terrorist imprisonment in the U.S. is not the possibility of *escape,* it is the possibility, even probability of release by judicial or political shenanigan such as a gamble on their successful rehabilitation or presumption of innocence based on some late reinterpretation of law or lack of process.
If it must be inside the US, I note no one has suggested prison in remote Alaska. Why?

wally sikes   May 25th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

You fit the mold of the biased reporters at CNN....Your ridiculous attempt to demean the Republican party for the spoof on Pelosi was just one more effort in your never ending attempt to discredit Republicans. I have finally decided to switch from CNN forever...you are not fair or unbiased...you are in fact very biased and it is obvious to all. So count me as an ex viewer. I am switching to other channels to get a balanced approach. So you can continue your sneeky, biased, clandestine, subtle, and perpetual bias...but I will not be watching anymore...Poor Show CNN.....America deserves better.

With regards to Gitmo: I am upset at the attitudes of everyone regarding where to place these detainees. War is dirty, yet we don't want to accept that we have to get our hands dirty. There is too much of an appeal to our own Id, in that we can get everything we want with no work or consequence. We didn't ask for this mess, but ultimately it is OUR mess and we have to deal with it. Cowboy up, people.

In memory of Herbert Stewart, a WWII Veteran who was buried this Memorial Day in Rockport, Texas. Thanks, Hub for you service in the U.S. Navy and with the U. D. T. Seals, a precursor of the Navy Seals. A great Frogman, he was.

James G (Jerry) Lemonds   May 25th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

Rick, I served a 4-year enlistment in the Navy 1951-1955 (Korean War). Today, I heard about the Revolutionary War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam and Iraq and Afhanistan; not one word did I hear about the Korean War. I believe we lost as many brave men in Korea as Vietnam. We had to fight not only the North Koreans, but also the Chinse.

The most impressive and sobering War Memorial I think is of the Korean War. Just seeing the tired men with packs and/or guns trudging up the hill brought tears to my eyes. Of course, I also tear up for WWII, Vietnam and the others-but have someone to REALLY LOOK at the Korean War Memorial and it is very apparent.

Keep up the good work.

Jerry Lemonds, Paragould, AR

I can't believe that "white conservatives commentators" are already questioning her intellect. I guess if your latina with an amazing resume and gratuated from some of the most prestigious schools in the U.S. and at the top of her class she still can't possibly compare to a "old white guy ". Shame on you republicans and I look foward to seeing your own demise once and for all.

I believe Judge Sonia Sotomayor will be fair and just following the law and constitution properly.
It's not safe to assume that because Judge Sonia Sotomayor is from a modest up bringing and or a woman that she will be more lenient or forgiving.

In fact, sometime people with a diverse experience have no tolerance for the behaviors around them that encouraged them out of their humble beginnings.

For those who think it's bi-est. or racist to choose a woman or someone of Latino back ground, you can come up with any tantrum or argument against change, but you must acknowledge the facts. Judge Sonia Sotomayor is the most qualified person for this job that's come along in the last 100 years. Facts are facts!

However, thank you for finally acknowledging the last 200 hundred years of bi-est and racist ruling that has burdened any one non-male or non-white.
The choices of the past have been ruled by an exclusive all white male club with no real balance of justice or qualification merely political agenda.
Now we have someone who is qualified not by opinion by fact.
Finally real justice!
Welcome Judge Sonia Sotomayor.

Rick, Try to get Larry King's Foundation to help Juan. That is what it is set up for!!!

Jose Matos   May 26th, 2009 3:06 pm ET

This country has historically curtailed significant advancement in many fields to qualified individuals because they did not look our founding fathers. It's about time we caught up with the reality and the true complexion of our society and of our times. As a retired Puerto Rican Chemical Engineer with parents of only grade school education, it is uplifting to see someone who has walked in my shoes being recognized for their intellect, ability and, yes, for their lifelong experience. Kudos to President Obama and to the electorate who put him in the position to make today’s proceedings possible.

Santiago Mesa   May 26th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Sotomayor is clearly well qualified for this position. her time and experience makes her one of the best picks for the supreme court in years. I believe its about time we got some diversity on the supreme court and began to represent the largest minority in the U.S. The same bunch of old white guys have been making the most important legal decisions in our country and its about time we got a progressive voice on the bench.

marie flynn   May 26th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

I am happy with President Obaama's pick of Sonia Sotomayer in that simply by virtue of her life experience as a woman and as a minority she will help to round out the court a bit more. The highest court in our land should more fairly represent the american people, who are no longer just a bunch of old white guys. Having said that, however, I am Catholic, and pro-life and wasn't expecting Obama's pick 2 b someone who was.

Anne   May 26th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

I'm surprised that the questioning indicates people think Scalia, for instance, has no perspective or agenda because he is white and male. . . hardly! We all have a context, hers is just not the same as 107 or the justices we've had. Bring her on!

james rivera thomas   May 26th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez:
I never cease to be amazed by the hypocrisy of the right! How dare anyone suggest that Color/Gender "not be an issue. White men and to a lesser degree, white woman, have benifited from their own implementation of "affirmative action" ( also know as institutional racism,) for the last one hundred and seventy years and never complained about the issue of a "level" playingfield ! What B.S.
As usual we ( I am a Latino,) continue to have to prove ourselves twice over as opposed to our less qualified white counterparts when applying to academic institutions as well as competing in the job market!

Respectfully;

James RIvera Thomas

Can someone tell me which Supreme Court Justice ISN'T influenced by his or her perspective? Aren't "Liberal" and "Conservative" in fact perspectives which influence their decisions?

Rich O   May 26th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

I am very surprised at the concern about 'feelings' and making decisions, etc. If you listen to every second word that any interviewer uses, it is 'how do you feel about that?' Judges and juries look for signs of 'remorse' which are....feelings.
The problem seems to be that some people forget that feelings are what we 'have' and are not necessarily the truth. They come and go like the weather.
How do you feel about that?

Why is the focus on Obama's nomination for the Supreme Court as "the first hispanic (or latino)..." She was born in America! This insistence on ethnic or cultural identification has no place in the 21th century!

Mike   May 26th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

How can you put this "Ed" guy on the air he is an idiot, this woman is a fantastic pick for the court, Its just sad that we have all these closet racists in this country. Its about time that the court reflects the cross section of our culture.

sandi neil   May 26th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

hi rick...regarding the young man with lymphoma....my son had burkitts lymphoma at age 7., an extremely aggressive cancer. chemo treatment and radiation got us 24 years we would not have had otherwise. unfortunately, joel developed a glioblastoma multiforme (brain tumor for which there is really no treatment) and passed away 3 years ago tomorrow.
while the treatments were difficult at times (back then in 1981,treatments lasted 4 years) and even knowing what the outcome would be, i still would not have done anything differently. dying from untreated or undertreated cancer is more painful than the treatments. as a mother, i will always know we did all we could, and we had 24 years after his initial treatment to show for it. having to deal with a cancer for which there is treatment AND one for which there is none, i know what my choice would be again..Dealing with the hopelessness of GBM was awful. we went as far as the NIH looking for treatment of any kind. Still, i know we did everything we could! i wish this family the best and hope for a speedy and successful recovery.....ps we are from miami and watched you there for years...

Regarding President Obama's new Supreme Court nominee: researchers have found for many years that the personal values of judges (whether conservative, moderate, or liberal) affect their decisions. The Supreme Court vote to make George W. Bush the president is an excellent example.
In a related vein, a recent analysis of Supreme Court judges' votes to strike down acts of Congress in recent years found that the "activist" judges included Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. I don't recall conservatives attacking them for their "activism."

Karl Bryant   May 26th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

Rick, for crying out loud, does anyone with minimal intelligence believe the prior Supreme court's white Anglo Saxon white males have not historically made decisions based on their respective upbringing and life experiences? I think it is yet another residual form or covert racism to think white males are the only one who could sit on the bench of the supreme court and interpret the constitution as it was intended.

Give me a break, or better yet, watch how these lawyers try to use intellectual nonsense to try to deny her access. It is what they do, so we need to constantly and persistently expose it for which it is, instututionalized racism at the highest level.

Frans Nio   May 26th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

Rick,
I like your show.
One suggestion, you sometimes talk too much and interrupt, or not let your guests answer your questions or finish their points.
Just a thought.
Other than that, excellent show.

Why don't you talk about the 20,000 Americans who die each year from lack of health insurance? One kid, who's parents have choice, is all over the news.

Jeanette   May 26th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

We would all think Sotomayer was fantastic if she were a white male with the same credentials.

Why can't she just be judged by her overwhelming accomplishments. Not to mention, our Supreme Court also needs balance and new eyes from someone with a different path and a different journey. She is after all representing the dreams of many of American women as a Puerto Rican American woman who knows how to fight and knows what hard work can achieve.

President Obama's choice is a good one. The Republicans picked who they aspired to. The Democrats deserve the same.

We are in the end all Americans. The Supreme Court already has enough White Males; and that includes Clarence Thomas.

Hi Rick
Recently a Mexican man was beaten to death on the streets of Shennandoah, Pa. and so for most of the men who beat him to death while shouting racist remarks were let off scott free in court! Hell yeah it's time for a Latina Supreme Court Justice and Justice Ginsberg I think I heard is having health issues and may be retiring soon.

Hey there Ricky Dilly Bob,

After the last administration this country has suffered and all the fertilizer that we could basically muster, isn't time we just cherish the fruit. Let's give the plants time to grow. It's like my Granddaddy said to me, “son the reason a crap kicker is crap kicker is they really don't like kicking crap they just engross themselves in the smell.” Do we really need more crap kickers? Oh, crap comes from the terminology of the toilet that John Crapper made in the 1800's because he was proud to deal with s***!

Hi Rick, just finished watching you interview Tom Clancy about his view on the North Korean crisis.

I was quite surprised when he said, "you've got to convince them to stop making missiles, stop making nuclear weapons and start making something we can sell in the aisles of Walmart."

I was surprised that he would make such a comment, kind of belittling Asian people and I was more surprised that you kind of just laughed and brushed it off. I mean, I know you can't start a ridiculous debate on racism and the off the wall things people say, but still, I think many Asian people would be offended by his Walmart comment.

Well, they are now forcing the boy with cancer to take chemo, and the spin begins! If he is cured, it will be because of the deadly toxins they're gonna pump into him. If he isn't, then it's because he ran away and should have started sooner. The cancer industry has a ready-made answer for each failure. Surveys have shown that a large percentage of physicians would never undergo chemo or allow their families to submit to it. Why cannot they say that publicly?
Cut off the billions of dollars of money that supports the cancer industry, or make them provide a cure, and they'll have a cure pretty quickly I'll bet, and it'll come from the natural side! See Dr. Simoncini's work.

It just shows most white Americans don't respect language or culture. It's disgusting!! These WHITE people were educated!! We've had WHITE males 4ever on the court, making WHITE decisions, against Blacks, Latinos, Asians, Indians...and on and on!! Mark Twain.. Huckleberry Finn.. escaping with BLACK SLAVE Jim.. rafting down the Mississippi.. Jim gets cut and bleeds red. Jim says, yea we all are the same under our skin. Same blood, same genes, same emotions, same ability to make babies...color doesn't mean different. It only means a different skin color. I worked at UC Berkeley. We mapped human genes. Rick Sanchez: Victims advocate? Look up "Rick Sanchez" (Wikipedia) DUI that apparently resulted in a man's paralysis and death! He didn't compensate the family according to that article, and in fairness I checked but could find no conflicting info. My Dad would've called Rick a "Big Time Operator". When you look at an actual newscast- how much time does the anchor talk about (or promote) himself? Compare Rick Sanchez. Maybe Rick belongs on a talk show. He's no journalist in my opinion.

I was just curious about his journalism creds (not reality show host)- so I searched there. Very disappointing!!!

It's fun to Wikipedia people who provide slanted info (like radio and cable talk show hosts). It's often surprising- but after doing it a few times, sadly not.

Veterans are dealing with an adversarial Veterans Administration that takes over a year to respond to serious mental problems. Suicide rates among veterans are approximately 18 per day. PTSD is real and it is a national shame that the Veterans Administration doesn't offer timely assistance. If you want to know why veterans are committing suicide, go to a Vet Center and ask the veteran.

Jean   May 28th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Rick:

Where you are concerned as a Catholic (I am a Catholic), I do not know if this matters since you work for CNN. This priest, Father Cutie (whatever his name is) voluntarily – so I hoped – decided to become a priest. Was he forced to become a priest? He knew what the priesthood entailed. As a priest, he chose to enter into a relationship with a woman. He also went to the beach with her, exposing himself in a compromising manner for all to see. I, personally, as a laity, would not conduct myself in such a manner on a beach or anywhere. This woman is a Gazebel (however this name is spelt), as in 'Run Samson Run, Delilah's on her way.'
This priest made a vow "TO GOD!"; not to man. It is contained in Holy Scriptures: "When you make a vow to God, you better fulfill it; otheriwse...' He promised to honor his vow, as married heterosexual couples only who get married in a church or synagogue and who make vows – before God. He now wants to make an excuse and exonerate himself from practicing the priesthood. He has failed and also where Holy Scriptures and the teachings of the Catholic Church are concerned. "You are a Priest forever..."
Whatever he says, whatever he does, this will not exonerate him.
Rick, you should know that God makes no excuses for those who make vows, before Him. He doed not exonerate anyone from honoring their vows.
Once a Catholic, always a Catholic. God does not rescind His covenant and blessings on those who were baptized Catholics.
So this priest decided to join the Anglican Episcopal church. This reminds me of King Henry VIII who imprisoned his first wife, Catherine of Aragon and wanted to divorce her because she did not conceive an heir. Catherine died in that prison. She is no doubt a saint.
Henry VIII formed the Anglican church and had all statues of the Catholic Church, including those of The Mother of God, desecrated – destroyed. I often wonder where in eternity the soul of Henry VIII is.
Also the gay man who is a bishop and preaching the word of God. God is against homosexuals and other sins. Do you see what is wrong with the thinking and actions of these peopel and of other religons?
Those priests as the so-called Father Curie who has scandalized himself, his Catholic Chuch and its members and now speak against It, who left The Church because of his scandalization (which he does not perceive this to be), going on a beach and acting out sexually and in a scandalous manner for all of Florida to see and as the news circulated throughout the world via TV broadcasts as also CNN, this priest and those others would have done themselves and The Catholic Church a favor to leave the Church.
I read that, The Mother of God, The Ever Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Dear Lady, said to a visionary, a message for us all, said about those priests who scandalize The Catholic Church: "It would be better that they left The Church." I explain, prior to scandalizing the Catholic Church. They owe it to The Catholic Church to avoid scandalization.
Father Curie should ask himself (as all of us) what will Jesus think and say? This is the problem with people. They never "Think God and what will Jesus say."
Woe to them, "Who depend on their own understanding and that of the godless world of people. (Holy Scriptures.) They will find out on the day of judgment, many, to their eternal detriment.

Melissa from Los Angeles, CA   May 28th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Rick …help me understand this? You obviously hold an open minded and impartial position on the nomination of SOTOMAYOR. But, why are your news headlines implied with a subjective and negative opinion of this nominee? For many who do not look for the whole picture prior to making a judgment are quick to spread that “SOTOMAYOR is racist” without a clear understanding of the entire context of her statements. I hope to see that your headlines are more neutral, but still keeping it nail biting, exciting & intriguing.

CubanMom   May 28th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

@ Jean...... Peace be with you! Since you are Catholic, as I am. You must know that until the .........13th Century........ clergy in the Roman Catholic church were allowed to marry!

1. At NO time do you read in Scripture that "priests should be celibate" that was a man-made rule.

2. Remember, that ALL of the Apostles with the exception of Paul & John were married and had families.

3. Yes, Fr. Alberto (he still is a priest) made a vow BEFORE GOD not TO GOD.

4. Speaking of GOD, GOD created man & woman to be sexual beings! Sexual beings are normal........ celibacy is abnormal! Even St. Paul in his letters mentioned that "not all men can be celibate" look it up!

5. The Episcopalian and Anglican churches are also considered "Catholic" just not of the "Roman" communion.

Lastly, Jesus is Love, He IS our Salvation. And the final authority in regards to Fr. Alberto. I very much doubt, that Jesus would condemn Fr. Alberto!

Jean, your comment is very sad and narrow minded, though you have a right to voice your opinion. BUT.......... please do not think for one second that Jesus would approve of your condemnation of Fr. Alberto!

The Roman Catholic church lost a wonderful priest, and the Anglicans are blessed with Fr. Alberto!

The Catholic church is dying a slow painful death, because the Vatican refuses to allow married priests. Celibacy should be an option!

Lastly, I am greatly grieved that the Catholic church who has long protected ..... pedophiles........ is quick to throw a normal healthy man out because he chooses to marry a woman! Hypocrisy.

DestroyZog   May 28th, 2009 6:22 pm ET

To you "bla bla bla" is our immigration policy and laws. Completly improper to allow these people into this country. The invader in the hospital should be sent back for that matter. Its American taxpayers that are paying for those hospital bills, but of course you omit that little detail.

Sanchez, you have no place as a news reporter, you are obviously more concerned with your ethnic loyalties than reporting the news in a proper fashion. It's so transparent its sickening. You need to be deported as well.

I'm writing about Juan Gonzalez, the Guatemalan boy who is in the hospital in Rome, Georgia. I'm really disappointed in that CNN hasn't been giving updates on Juan's condition, and apparently has no plan to keep the boy's plight before the eyes of the public. After the big pat on the back CNN gave itself for airing the first story, it has completely abandoned Juan. There are so many silly and worthless stories that get aired during the course of each day. Why couldn't CNN have cared enough to continue to help Juan? Juan's situation would not be considered hopeless if he had powerful forces helping him.

You seem like a straight forward guy....even if you do work for CNN.
I was sickened by the announcement from Eric Holder that special protection is going to be given to abortion doctors since the Tiller murder. I am deeply saddened by this act of violence. But I am more saddened by the slaughter of the innocence. Where is the special federal protection for the most innocent of all, the unborn babies that are being brutally murdered? Where is the outcry for them?

Why is it that the Israelis MUST stop doing what they're doing regarding settlements (I happen to agree that new settlements should not be built), but nobody seems to want to tell the Palestinians that they MUST stop rocketing and mortaring Israeli towns? The Israelis have responsibilities and the Palestinians don't? It seems pretty one-sided.

JPL   June 3rd, 2009 4:18 pm ET

Rick,
I am, personally, irritated by all of the talking heads on tv who push their own agenda! Oh, that does include YOU!
People are much more secular in this country now than ever! I, FIRST, am an AMERICAN! I have served in the United States Marine Corps in the Gulf War, until we were all tested for HIV. I was courteously told, " We are so sorry; If you EVER need ANYTHING, just call." When I did, trying to receive my DD214 and medical records, I was informed to call many different places, none of which could, would, or even gave a damn if I received the documents or not. I have my awards, and even, my honorable discharge certificate, but none of the aforementioned documents. When I called the VA in Atlanta, and told the story, as I have so many times before, I was asked by the customer service representative," Why weren't you sent to California for treatment?", followed by a quick, "Sorry, can you hold?"; and still nothing!
It has been almost 20 years since being diagnosed HIV+, and I cannot even get transitional housing, section 8 housing, much less any compassion that ILLEGAL HIV+ "refugees, migrants, or immigrants" receive! SO, before you tout and speak for ALL the minorities, DO YOUR RESEARCH! And DO STOP spinning stories equalling O'Reilly, Hannity, and the like on FOX!
Remember, I fought, as many of MY brothers and sisters have, for your rights to lambaste and stir the pot of hatred and rumors! WE DESERVE BETTER!
Sincerely,

Jay Lewis

That idiot should have just gave them nukes back when they started ousting The U.N. to enrich uranium. This is the perfect example of the Our grossly ineffective and overly bureaucratic tactics that we've been clinging to as if they were some kind of American tradition.
I have always thought that Bush should have been tried for treason for what he has done to this country alone, not to mention the rampage of carnage that lay in his wake in the world community.
