Miss California

(Getty Images)

This is Carrie Prejean, Miss California 2009.

If you haven't seen clips from Sunday night's Miss USA pageant, I'll bring you up to speed:

Miss California was one of the five finalists. She was asked by one of the judges, blogger Perez Hilton, whether she felt that every state in the union should follow the example of those states that have have legalized same-sex marriage.

She replied, "I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what, in my country, in my family, I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."

Cool. She was asked her opinion, and that's what she gave, right?

Well, Carrie did not win the pageant, she was runner-up. Do you think her answer to the same-sex question impacted the outcome of the pageant?

Tell me what you think.

I too am a Christian but I’m not fixated on homosexuality! Why do so many “Christians” sweep under the rug subjects like domestic violence and divorce, which God hates (Mal. 2:14-16!)?! Jesus calls remarried divorcees adulterers. Premarital sex, dead beat dads, prostitution and much more on the topic of the vast majority of HETEROSEXUAL sins is everywhere in Scripture!

Barbara Hill   April 20th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Rick -
Must be a slow news day to ask us to comment on Miss California's answer to the question regarding same sex marriage. OF COURSE her answer decided her fate but not for the reason you suggest – politics. Listen again to her answer but now close your eyes and it will be clear why. What is opposite marriage? She mentions that twice. I imagine that the panel of judges concluded after listening carefully to her answer was that this young woman did not have the ability to articulate intelligent responses to complicated issues. Her ability to represent the US as not just a pretty face was clearly too much of a challenge.

Don   April 20th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Unbeleivable....Bleeding hearts want to be protected, just as long as they don't know how it's done....cowards!

Chris   April 20th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Rick, It's a pageant. She is not running for office. The question should never have been asked in the first place.

Buzz from Solvang, CA   April 20th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Actually I didn't think it was a very good answer at all. Just from an articulation point of view she came off badly irrespective of her viewpoint. But using the word CHOOSE was indeed political. She gave everyone the impression she believed gay was a choice. So IMHO she lost for being inarticulate especially with the phrase "Opposite Sex" WTH does that mean?

Roy Campbell   April 20th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

America will never be strong again until the people unite. All this recrimination against the Bush administration and the CIA. is dividing us further. There is a tremendous backlash brewing against this partisan radicalism from the left.. These people have no idea what real torture is.

Dave (Canada)   April 20th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

I believe this question to Miss California was
"loaded" and never have been allowed!!! But since it was and she responded I am on her side, 100%. Lose the crown but stick to your guns!

Keith   April 20th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

Hey Rick love the show... Miss Cali gave her opinon people.. LEAVE HER ALONE..!!! And besides, why did NBC even allow that type of question to be used LIVE on T.V. at the Pageant...?

Jay   April 20th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Hi RIck,
RE: Miss USA
The question behind the question was: "Do you believe that all Americans should receive equal treatment under the law regardless of sexual orientation? Her answer was "No, not in my family." Being from California, I was disappointed in her answer because to be crowned "Miss USA," one should probably believe in this basic premiss of the USA Constitution.

blac77   April 20th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Ther was a comment posted to the efect that O.B. sharing the "secerts of the C.I.A. " was like turning in your parents. Well if your parents wer torturing U you not only have the right but the a duty to turn them in. I say "YOU GO PREZ. OBAMA:" That's what we need as a nation, the truth and somone should be held in account!

Just saying   April 20th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

"I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage." –This presupposes that same-sex marriage is a legal option in every state. Which it isn't. Which is the point of same-sex marriage activistism. When it becomes a legal option in every state, then she'll be able to repeat those two sentences, and they will be true. Pretty lady. Unclear on the concept.

bill   April 20th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

And judges like the ranting blogger wonder why non gays consider gays just as intorerant of other views. Tyoical show biz responses.

ibuysss   April 20th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

For those that don't want same sex marriage! Why? It means one day
there kind will not be! As they can no reproduce! Give them what they want!

Mary   April 20th, 2009 4:02 pm ET

Carrie Prejean did not win the "Miss USA" pagent, but she is certainly a winner in my book. She was not afraid to exercise her first amendment rights by giving an honest answer. Some may have considered her response to the question "Politically Incorrect", but my belief is that it was "Morally Correct". Although there are those who are offended, there are those of us who still believe in strong moral values and as long is God is pleased, other opinions are secondary.
God Bless America and God Bless Carrie Prejean.

Carolyn Lanyi   April 20th, 2009 4:02 pm ET

I think it's fine for everyone or anyone to get married.
I'm just worried about the precedent it sets for polygamists.
And I've heard on TV, some ladies say they aren"t asking for any more privileges than anyone else. However, if they get medical privileges from their place of work, that my neighbor's 23 yr old daughter couldn't get during summer, living @ home - that would bevome privileges she couldn't receive & -- – - discrimination!

shawn   April 20th, 2009 4:02 pm ET

I am a christian as well and changing the ruling for marriage is not right for a country who has the name of god in the plede on money, etc... To turn our backs on something this fundamental is heading our country in the wrong direction. This can all be a test from god what is more important money or values. Money comes and goes, but to change the core beliefs of this nation is iresponsible to say the least. I have nothing agaisnt any one preference if your gay then your gay but god created marriage to be between a man ans woman period!!! If you believe in god and can tell me that god supports gay marriage point it out to me in the bible.

alljoy   April 20th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

Congratulations Miss California....I'm one of those people believing that marriage is between a MAN and a WOMAN and will say it OUT LOUD.....

I really have a problem with the JUDICIARY Making the SAME-SEX MARRIAGE DECISIONS.....I believe that these decisions should be made by the people AS IN A VOTE!!!!

California MADE the decisions and GAYS around the country are now trying to BACK DOOR the PEOPLE by sanctioning gay marriage by judges.......THIS IS A TRAVESTY

Brendan G from North of the boarder.   April 20th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

In my eyes Rick she won. She answered the question even though she knew that her answer was more than likely going to cost her the pageant. I do think it was an unfair question though to start with. More so coming from Perez Hilton ..

JudgeU   April 20th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

Gays rule America. Sad. People are being judge based on their gaycism, according to the gays. Innocent opinions, career, jobs are sabotage based on opinions like Ms. Prejean. Gays need to step aside; you all can't let everyone accept your psychological ideals. If you are a gay, so what? I still believe that male and female are made for sexual relationship, and two men weren’t made for a sexual relationship. Female was made with two holes while male was made with one. You have a choice.

Joncleir   April 20th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

No, I think it was her hairdresser and makeup artist.

Geert   April 20th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

The fact that these are regarded as strong words by Miss California shows how sensitive people have become to this subject; both from the pro same sex marriage folks and those against. It also shows that we have swung too far in trying not to offend homosexuals. Heterosexuals should be able to freely state if they believe the word "marriage" should be reserved for defining heterosexual union only. Miss California would still get my vote and her comments should not sway anyone else regardless of their sexual preference.

Dorothy Demare   April 20th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

We'll probably never find out the answer, but I must give Miss California a big applause for answering how she really felt and not just saying what might potentially get her a crown. More people need to have a crash coarse in fortitude these days. It may not get you the job or position you're striving for, but at least you'll be able to sleep well at night. Why do you think there's so many people out there running to the drug store to get sleeping pills these days?

Homophobia and religious extremism.

When one studies civilisation and finds that the Irish people are 60,000 years old; 54,000 years older than the Jews/Palestinians; Egypt or Greece and that the myth of Catholicism or Christianity is a mere 2009 years old; one soon realises that there is little evidence to any of the cross related bogus elements of that cult. In the year 300 AD when Emperor Constantine who to some was the first pope; went on to fabricate Christianity – a fantasy – which turned out to be one of the most hateful & evil concoctions ever perpetrated on the world. The Vatican supported Hitler and religion is responsible for more corruption and violence in the world. The Pope & Vatican with its blatant witchcraft related to the bible and its hateful beliefs; tries to rule with extreme prejudices against the world … that may fall victim to religions' absolute evil.

Grant MacDonald   April 20th, 2009 4:06 pm ET

What ever happened to … "Love Your Fellowman?” Perhaps the evil preachers should be told to take their cult out of America. Didn't Thomas Jefferson say that church and state should be separated by a wall and it's written in the Constitution that there must be separation of church and state. Bigotry and hatemongering against gays should be banned. Tell them to take that cross and shove it where the sun don't shine ... and pay their taxes along the way before they take that cross down forever ... with its final station; extinction. It is written; so therefore it shall be? We are the chosen people? Who wrote that crap? United States is supposedly fighting for democracy? It is suppressing gay rights and following an extremist religious & bigoted family values path according to a basic cult riding roughshod over the rights of gay people. Canada and Britain are more civilized with its military and basic dignity.

Daniel   April 20th, 2009 4:06 pm ET

"Opposite Marriage". ...Seriously?

Carolyn Bluett   April 20th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

Today your male guest was a loud mouth, crude, and very rude person. The lady reporter was treated just awful. If you disagree with someone CNN rule apparently is, who ever screams the loudest gets heard. Fortunitely my TV also has FOX where people are aloud to be heard even if you disagree with them.
Heck,"Sound's like America"!!!

Good Bye Forever Rick and CNN...Hello FOX and Mr. O

Mary Moore   April 20th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

I agree 100% with the California pagent lady. This country claims that they believe in GOD whose Hebrew name is really YAHWEH but they don't seem to believe in the "Bible" and what it says about anything as well as marriage. In the Bible Yahweh married Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve in the book of Genesis, the first chapter. Evidently, gay people aren't aware or don't care about what it says. This is the example of what a marriage is supposed to be. The Bible also says that people who don't know or care what GOD says will call things that are wrong, right and things that are right, wrong.

mark   April 20th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

What was this the dumb blond show?

Darryl   April 20th, 2009 4:08 pm ET

Rick,

We need to stop beating on people because they're not PC or don't reflect our views. I got the gist of this lady's comments - it's her opinion, but do we need to rake her over the coals for it? What happened to civil discourse in this country? Speaking of which, those two people you just had on your show talking (shouting) about 9/11, torture policy etc. - what a waste of time. While I agreed with the gist of the male guest's position, he was a flat out bully who doesn't seem to understand that debate doesn't require you to shout down or overtalk your opponent. Your female guest just seemed to be in another dimension - another apologist for the Bush admninistration and pure idealogue.
What happened to civil discussion or is that reserved for the Sunday morning talk shows?

Roy Campbell   April 20th, 2009 4:08 pm ET

While the Bush administration was given a general warning that al Qaeda was planning an attack against the United States, no specifics were given. Was Bush supposed to shut down the entire country? To rant that he did not protect us on 9/11, after al Qaeda had several years to plan it during the Clinton years, is ludicrous. Bush did insure no more attacks occurred against American assests, unlike the multiple attacks in the Clinton years.

pam jacobs   April 20th, 2009 4:08 pm ET

Thank goodness obama wasnt president on 911, he would have been an appologist for bin laden.

Michelle Plaisance   April 20th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

I am a christian. As much as she has a right to her opinion, I disagree with her. It says in the Bible that marriage is between a man and a woman. It does not say between a man and a man or a woman and a woman. To allow same sex marriages is an abomination against God. I pray that all christians stand up to this abomination and fight it not only in the country, but all over the world. I pray that God opens Miss USA's eyes to the truth. She represents the whole USA.

John   April 20th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

As we know, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and own beliefs, but why does it seem that whenever anyone speaks out AGAINST same sex marriages, they are always attacked? People who are in support of it are always quick to attack the beliefs of the person who is not, i don't understand why people could lose this or lose that, and in this case Ms. California may have lost the crown because of it, in which i believe she did. Is she not entitled to her own opinion as well? should it not be respected even if she does not support it? Honestly i'm not too happy in the direction society is headed these days.

Grant MacDonald   April 20th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

This bogus religious filth should be banned. It exists as a tax exempt structure which discriminates against human rights. The pope, bishops and mormons are cult members promoting discrimination against minorities. That bogus black book called the bible should be banned. Religion and the churches should now be exposed as a bigoted structure that gets away with hate mongering. Love between two guys or girls existed long before these cults existed. By enjoying their tax exempt status and benefits from the state ... it also puts them at the mercy of the America; to be forced to adhere to the human rights laws. Religion is thriving like a cancerous growth on society that should be stopped in its tracks; outlawed & banned.

Jaye La Vallee   April 20th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

I believe her opinion did not make her run'er up, and, not but, beauty contests might be addressed as OUR OPINIONED VIEW of only SOME PEOPLE! And we are all not the same outiside or in. Just my opinion.

smash   April 20th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Does it really matter? I mean really it's a freaking beauty pagent! Who cares how she feels. If she was robbed of the crown then shame on pagent officials for being so shallow. Who were the sponsors I wonder??

Grant MacDonald   April 20th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Interesting global occurrence … Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien told the Vatican that there was to be no cross erected over the Canadian Parliament buildings … figuratively speaking; when the Pope demanded the Prime Minister go against gay rights. An Alberta bishop had the audacity to say that The Canadian Prime Minister would go to hell for going against the church. Such outrageous evil threats; the religious extremists force upon us trying to multiply … with their control over birthing like animals at the pulpit. With reference to protecting the children. A member of the Canadian Parliament, who happens to be a doctor spoke eloquently to defend the rights of babies being born and stated that she delivered hundreds of newborn children and she was in fact defending their rights by speaking on behalf of equal rights and therefore defending the integrity, dignity and equality for gays.

Pam in Memphis   April 20th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Hey Rick, love your show. Regarding Miss California and her answer:
I was pulling for her to win, until she made those comments. Since I was not a judge, we will never know if it affected the outcome of the pageant, but it did change my mind. I think if she wants to represent the entire country, she should probably be a little more open-minded.
And a little more articulate, as stated by other bloggers. For the record, I'm a straight woman with a 35 year marriage.

Starrica   April 20th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

I don't agree with her on her stance on gay marriage, however, I do find it admirable that she stated her honest opinion. What is the point of asking a question regarding personal opinion if you will be offended what the other party's response will be? So even when we are asked to be "honest" we are supposed to lie and go along with most people see as fit? It makes no sense.

gg   April 20th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

Am glad she stood for the truth. Its better to lose human presige than compromise the truth with erroneous conscience. Am proud of her. God Bless her heart.

Valerie   April 20th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

The Miss USA contest always has questions and how you answer them is VIP..as you will represent the USA for a year..all over the world.
These questions will be asked of our Miss USA in Japan..Africa..everywhere and she must give a politically correct answer..not what her biased family has taught her.
Did she lose because of her answer? welllll..I sure wouldn't want them to ignore a young woman who doesn't understand her answer needs to reflect the nation..saying each state should chose as this was the Historical American way..

Grant MacDonald   April 20th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

Many theologians state quite correctly that the birth; crucifixion; resurrection and other elements of christianity actually didn’t even happen! Today’s evangelical extremists are like the nazis who cast others into ovens & are actually supremacists – who practice their bogus hocus pocus – and are trying to suppress and deprive others of their happiness and their legal rights in an open and proud society. Liberty College, Oral Roberts University and others should be looked at as tax exempt terroristic training grounds for evangelical lunatics. It was refreshing in his final weeks; to hear President Bush acknowledge that he didn’t believe in any of that religious bunk.

Grant MacDonald   April 20th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

As a son of a catholic father who never went to church and a protestant mother who took us to church and sunday school although we as young children would sneak out the side door and play by the cannon from World War One where my grand-father fought for freedom as a Sgt Mgr at Vimy and father who fought at Normandy on D-Day for freedom. Onward christian soldiers ... I think not. Such drivel. To be manipulated by a santa claus; an easter bunny and worst of all a bogus cross. One should appreciate each day of life and not expect another ... and if there is it will be given by a God of Love. Pat Robertson should be taken to task for his grandstanding filth. Einstein stated in a letter recently auctioned that the bible was collection of primitive legends. He said believing in God was childish and he as a Jew is no different than another person … not chosen by God. Do you want to be lambs at the slaughter or be wise and reject religious cultist manipulation?

Jack   April 20th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

When you ask someone's opinion you should be ready to face the fact that the answer might be for or against what you believe. She shouldn't be penalized for voicing out her opinion as asked. We are in a country that upholds freedom of speech. It is not only gays that can speak out on the issue.
By the way, how many more "rights" is America willing to give? If we cave in now for gay rights, soon the pedofiles will claim pedofilia as their sexual orientation and claim their rights. Will we be ready to grant them so they can screw our little boys and girls? Think more deeply about these issues and their implications.

Michelle Plaisance   April 20th, 2009 4:18 pm ET

I don't have anything against gay people. It just that i don't like their life style. You are not born gay. You choose to be gay. It goes against God's commandments. It says to honor your father and mother. It doesn' say to honor your father and father or honor your mother and mother. How can someone go against God' commanments?

SJW   April 20th, 2009 4:19 pm ET

Hey Rick,
of course it did, isn't that what the questions are for, to judge the answer? I think she went wrong when she said " My Country" to me that held more criticism then her saying she feels marriage should be between a Man and Woman. To be honest I feel the same way, I believe it's a natural feeling as being an heterosexual man it's what feels natural to me. But at the same time, I realize that Homosexuals are born as they are and so they're doing what feels natural to them. Sometimes what we know must supercede what we feel.
The "My Country" statements says to me that America only belongs to those who like myself feel marriage is for opposite sexes only. This country belongs to every citizen regardless of their opinions and beliefs...

Uche' Arinzeh   April 20th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

Hello Rick. Bush supporters like to point out that his policies have kept Americans safe since the attack on September 11, 2001. Why don't they also give credit to Bill Clinton for keeping the country safe in the eight years or so that past between the World Trade Center attack in 1993 through the the end of his presidency. In my view the assertion that just because we've not been attack since 2001 means that we must give Bush and Cheney the credit is ridiculous. Heightened public awareness alone could have as much to do with why we've not been attacked since 2001 as anything Bush did. What are the chances that middle easternn looking men could get on any flight you or I have flown on since September 11, 2001 and take it over as they did then? It couldn't happen today even if the gorvnment had done nothing different.

sparkie6   April 20th, 2009 4:22 pm ET

If I heard her right she said not in my country and changed to not in her family so she has no opinion about it. If her family says no then what it her personal opinion. And I thought that all Miss USA were from the same country. I guess she is just another dumb beautiful blonde

Gregory J Wallace Sr   April 20th, 2009 4:22 pm ET

Yes, that is the reason why she lost and it is ashame a person put in all that time. Just to be violated for honesty. Judges are weird people.

Colonel   April 20th, 2009 4:23 pm ET

Rick ;

Normally – -I consider you as one of the most professional at what you do. Today, however, I was sad to say that you did not live up to your normal standard – and you allowed your bias to show. You had a woman who supported Bush and a man who clearly hated Bush – that was clear ... but what I am disappointed in is you allowed the man to scream non-stop at the woman and every time you woman tried to say anything – you cut her off...

As far as those memos -that gentleman was claiming that clearly told Bush that within his first 90 days – Ben Laden was flying planes into the USA and attacking us - I would love to see you do a special on that – and show how –anybody could have read exactly what was going to happen – that is what that gentleman was implying...

I do agree with the President to stop what is now called torture....

Lisa P.   April 20th, 2009 4:23 pm ET

What possible consequence could the opinion of a bubble-headed bleach blonde have in the legal decisions made regarding same-sex marriage law?

She probably was a runner up because the winner was better looking!

Ileana DeWitt   April 20th, 2009 4:24 pm ET

DeWitt

Of course she didn't win because she expressed her views; which were contrary to the liberal bias from the judge that asked the question. Why did she need to be "politically correct" to express her opinion? She spoke the way she saw the truth. Marriage is to be only between a man and a woman.

joe the carpenter   April 20th, 2009 4:24 pm ET

on april 20 2009 your guest said president bush knew about the september 11 2001 attacks you should let your viewers know that the president had no information of what state what city or what type of attack and you should apolagize to your guest for having a sided idiot on your show

colleen pellant   April 20th, 2009 4:24 pm ET

good for Miss California! If I hear "I want world peace" as an answer one more time...I would gag. She answered exactly as I would have. It is so very sad that the left wing is so against anyone that actually has a mind of their own, and strong morales. You can push your ugly agendas only so far down my throat, I will continue to regergitate them.

magneticn0rth   April 20th, 2009 4:27 pm ET

I'm gay, she's a twit, we both have opinions. Maybe some day she'll want to share her beautiful free country with the ones left out of the American Dream.

It's not up to us (gays) to fight for our rights – we are only 10% at best. Somewhere in a civics class they're teaching children that the majority rules but minority rights are protected. That only happens if the majority decides to be benevolent and realizes that a free society is best. It is up to the people who have their rights and freedoms to grant those privileges to those still oppressed. That is happening now. Governor Paterson is brave and just man. This cookie cutter fashion model? ...well, not everyone is brave at the same time.

janice floyd   April 20th, 2009 4:28 pm ET

i respect miss california for speaking truthfuly. i have gay friends that i love dearly. i do not however agree with thier lifestyle –but i do not judge. i read and believe in the holy Bible and i know that God is not pleased with homosexuality and i know that one day i will have to answer to him and i will not have to look into his face and say that i encuraged or went along with the gay thing. ther are alot of people torn between trying to follow the bible and ignoring what they know God feels about homosexuality. you just have to stand strong like Miss california did and say the right thing, not the politically correct thing because being politically correct is not going to get you to heaven and everlasting life. she did the right thing and she has my respect and admiration. thank you

Ed   April 20th, 2009 4:28 pm ET

I think she is entitled to her opinion. She did not preach anger or hate. She was simply voicing her honest opinion. The constitution give us he right to our opinion. All service men and woman Including fight for this right. Just because we dont agree doesnt mean we should be punished or called hate mongers. Marriage is for a man and women who want to have children and raise a family as God intended. Gay coulples cant do that without bringing a 3rd person into the relationship. We need to stop being selfish and start thinking about whats good for the Children and they need a mother and a father. Thats what marriage is. Gay's should have all the right promised them buy the constitution. A marrage is a joining of two people, mn and woman can join, two women or two men can't.

Roy Campbell   April 20th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

Carrie Prejean was clearly nixed because of her answer. The obnoxious gay judge admitted to that. By his name-calling (stupid & half-brain), he exposed himself to be a idiot. He should never have been selected as a judge.

Carol   April 20th, 2009 4:32 pm ET

I didn't get to see the show. Why didn't you like the winner?

Emogene Hayes   April 20th, 2009 4:32 pm ET

She was asked and she answered. She has the right according to our constitution to be able to express her opinion so what's the problem. You seem to be trying to stir up trouble. Find something else to talk about.!!!!

Tony   April 20th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

Honestly, that was an extremely stupid answer. She claimed to be happy to live in a country where people were free to choose between gay marriage and "opposite marriage". That is simply not true, because same sex marriage is only legal in 4 states. So, only people in those 4 states have the ability to choose between those two types of marriage. Her logic is the logic of all the idiotic conservatives in the country. They claim they like individual liberty and freedom, but they still don't want to allow some Americans to get married. Simply STUPID

lenora   April 20th, 2009 4:34 pm ET

thank you Rick for allowing us our opinion.

I agree with Miss California

and admire her honesty

Emeka Umebuani   April 20th, 2009 4:36 pm ET

I think she expressed her own opinion which is very good but because she is on a national stage and also someone that might represent United States in the world stage, her response affected her chances of winning.

Elizabeth Ludwig   April 20th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

Don't watch beauty pageants, but wondered if same question was asked of all contestants. I'm tired of the gay agenda and men having sex on tv (also don't like straight sex on tv), but because I don't want the definition of marriage changed (bad enough that word gay was changed). Give them all the legal rights afforded straights regarding jobs, housing, etc., but marriage is not a right guaranteed by Constitution. And could someone explain how gay couples decided who is the 'wife' and who is the 'husband ? Marriage: the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law

gezen   April 20th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

Miss California was asked and she answered the question truthfully.
I hope it did not cost her the crown.
I happen to agree with her 100 %,and just like her,I respect peoples values and opinions.
I hope we are all mature enough to accept that people have differing sideson this issue. We live in a democratic country after all.

Hey Rick, I agree Miss California 2009, should be commended for her honesty, as well as her bravery, in the face of certain condemning scrutiny from gay and lesbian supporters.

...I am not a college graduate, but it seems common sense that only a man and a woman are able to make a baby. ...So that must be the way it was intended. ...Anything else, is twisted, perverted lust.

God bless!

HI Rick, People get mad when they are wrong, People that consider then self gay, act like spoil brats! They have the same rights as any american, if they don't like america they are free to leave. But since
they want to stay they need to be cool . Miss Ca. did nothing wrong
its a sad day when you exspress appinion and you get kick because of it , the question, should not been asked it was wrong .

Terra   April 20th, 2009 4:44 pm ET

Rick, this what I don't understand why is it when a Christian speak the TRUTH they automatically have to be a Bible thumper. The Bible plainly states in 1Corinthains6:9,10 The wicked will NOT inherit the Kingdom of God nor the idolaters nor adulteres nor male prostitutes nor homosexuals, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, slanderers or swindlers. When people are not living right they will lash out when the TRUTH has been spoken. GOD does love the sinner, but don't be deceived He hates the sin and being homosexual is definatley a sin. You have to repent and ask God to deliver you it's a demonic spirit and you can be healed and delivered from it. If you are a gay person and you are reading this ask GOD to come into your life and change you.You have to be sincere when you ask and watch Him do it for you. Read Romans 10:9.

mykyrox   April 20th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

I think it's great that she did voice her views on the matter. Not everyone believes in same sex marriage. Not everyone believes in monogamy the only threat to traditional marriage is adultery. Do they think that gays are targeting marriage to destroy christian ideals? What about those men and women who stay late for ?work? Really we live in a country that believes in sep. of church & state, so others are able to strip rights based on their beliefs. I feel she might have won if she would have been clear and concise on her answer of the Q that came from PH. Any smart contestant would have figured "PH is asking the Q, O.K. gay relations question coming." She stumbled at the beginning, but it was near the end when she said "you know what In my country and in my family I think that I believe that marriage should be between a man and woman." People are offended by the tinge of arrogance in how she worded that remark that total contradicts the statement of how its great to live in a country with freedom of choice. Just don't choose to marry someone you truly love, just be glad that you can be together, and sorry you can't be with your sole-mate in the hospital who's been in a terrible accident. I think that's what people see in those words....

aw glass   April 20th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

probably did, but it shouldn't have because they asked her for her opinion. whether people think she is wrong or right! the question wasn't are you going to try to slaughter all gays! Ok, so they know they wouldn't get away with that question, but people need to get over this question, we have so many other more serious matters to worry about in this county than gay marriage. be realiisitc people!

I am the son of a catholic father who never went to church and a protestant mother who took us to church and Sunday school. Although we as young children would sneak out the side door and play by the cannon from World War One where my grand-father fought for freedom as a Sgt Mgr at Vimy and father who fought at Normandy on D-Day for freedom.

Sonya   April 20th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

I agree with the other poster who stated that Miss California was not able to intelligently articulate a response to the question and that is why she lost. In fact, if you listen to both of them, Miss North Carolina's response was clearer and more consise. After all, who refers to heterosexual marriage as "opposite marriage". It doesn't make sense and it sounds bad.

Justin   April 20th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

Well.... yea, I think her comment had a major impact on her not winning. She made it clear that all Americans have an opinon and have a choice to be able to choose whether they want to have a same-sex or "opposite" marriage- she should have stuck with the saying how marriage is between a man and a woman and that's how she was raised. She contradicted herself by saying that it's great that Americans have the freedom to choose. Apparently, we aren't allowed to choose. Choosing's bad... we must "stick with status quo." Oh geez.... Finally the POTUS is making the truth be known about the torture of terrorists. But I won't get into that.......I tweeted you on that, rick.

leslie   April 20th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

the fact of the matter is MARRIAGE is a RELIGIOUS matter not a governmental, civil issue. I, as many others, don't have an issue with gay people having the same rights as married people do through CIVIL UNIONS. The issue is NOT about rights – its about what various religions believe is god's widom for us as a society. most marriages are performed in a religious setting. Why are gays not happy with civil unions if they give the same rights? if civil unions give them the same rights, then their beef is with what ever religion they feel is not viewing them the way they want to be viewed and they should take that up with that religious organization!!!!!!!!!

Justin   April 20th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

oh hey, that last bit about "Choosing's bad," that's sarcastic... I was trying to be funny. Choosing's not bad. Choosing is good, it's just that we're supposed to conform sometimes to what the culture wants us to do..... that's all. I really don't care about this stuff either way..... just thought I'd blog Rick about it.....

Don Schaefer   April 20th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

Miss California is getting what is equivalent to "hate mail" for answering a question honestly. She said she was glad that people could choose, but then affirmed that her own preference is that marriage remain the label for the union between a man and a woman. I thought this was a very diplomatic, yet honest answer, and one she did not choose, and for which she could not have prepared. She didn't even object to homosexuals being able to call their non-traditional union, "marriage".

Are opinions not now acceptable unless the opinion not only approves of the right of homosexuals to form a legal union, but also must agree that this be called "marriage"? Homosexuals objected to being called "queer" and lobbied successfully to become "Gay". That labeling has been so successful that no longer do we hear of pleasant, excited and happy events or individuals as "happy and gay" – that would now be interpreted as relating to homosexuals. The old traditional definition has been completely taken over by this word (with previously positive connotations) having been taken over by homosexuals. The label not only suggests normalcy, but presumably hopes to attach the positive aspects of the former use of the word.

It appears to me that, by wanting their union to be called marriage, homosexuals want their single sex unions to acquire the positive images associated with traditional marriage, and thus be met with approval, not just to have the same rights and privileges of normal/traditional marriage. If given every legal right associated with the traditional meaning of marriage, but required to use any other positive term for their non-traditional union, would they accept it?? I think not. This appears to be a matter of marketing, to gain the APPEARANCE of approval by changing the label for the practice of a homosexual union. Miss California did not object to homosexuals following their practices. She didn't even object to their calling this "marriage". I do object to their use of the word since there are many others that could be chosen, if what they want is legal fairness. Miss California only said that she personally prefers marriage referring to the union of a man and a woman.

It appears to me that homosexuals do not just want all the rights and privileges of a legal union. Even more than that they want the APPROVALl suggested by sharing the label of "marriage".

Am I not permitted to have this opinion? I believe homosexuals have the right to their opinion and the right to express it, though I strongly disagree that "marriage" should be used to describe their legal union. To disagree is one thing – to not permit an honest opinion is worse than discriminatory – it is undemocratic. Does one now have to remain anonymous to express an honest opinion if it doesn't agree with that of homosexuals and those who support their opinions ?

Buzz from Solvang, CA   April 20th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

By the way, the picture shown of her above?

Is that not the phoniest smile you have ever seen?

AND one more thing...to the person who said let gays get married because since they can't reproduce they will soon be extinct.

SERIOUSLY?

Michael   April 20th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

Hi Rick,

I keep hearing the argument that she stuck with her values and answered honestly. So let us imagine for a minute that this is the Miss USA pagent being held in the Spring of 1861, and the question that was asked while states are starting to secede, is “Given that now Virginia has seceded from the union, do you think other states should follow suit? Yes, I beleive they should follow suit because i’m a racist. I beleive that a white man has the right to own a black man. This is what my country and my parents have taught me. I’m sorry if this offends anyone out there but this is what I beleive. Now please tell me how being honest is commended?!?

Kent   April 20th, 2009 5:20 pm ET

I watched the show last night and I heard Miss California express her views on marriage. I agree with her, and I am glad she had the courage to say so. The question was totally out of place.

Michael   April 20th, 2009 5:31 pm ET

The question about why when anyone voices an opinion against GAY marriage why are they attacked. Its a simple answer, there are two justifcations as to why someone is against GAY marriage. It is either because their GOD forbids it and consider it a sin, or they are truely sad individuals who enjoy placing themselves above others and being against others whom are different from them. They don't argue with Logic. The say being GAY isn't a choice, but turn around and say they didn't choose to be STRAIGHT, what?!? For those against GAY marriage, please provide a reason of why you are against GAY marriage that isn't religious doctrine or your own Bigoted thoughts? BTW Religion is a false belief, it is and always has been human instinct on how you should live your life, these human insticts have been stolen and paraded around as only being holy or religious, and not just a common instinct among our species.

Michelle Drozdibob   April 20th, 2009 5:32 pm ET

I applaud Ms. Prejean for giving her opinion, as did many people in the audience last night. She was asked for her opinion and she gave it. She did not coddle her answer in hopes of winning more votes and I do indeed feel she was penalized for being honest. Incidentally, the judge who asked the question was clearly shaking his head "no" during her answer and was making notation as to her response.

Vinny Reed   April 20th, 2009 5:42 pm ET

Hey Rick,
1st, I listen to you on XM radio, you're the only CNN program I listen to, because you are the only one that won't let his guess control the interview and you are not afraid to call your guess on a topic when they are wrong.
I was listening to your show and this is what prompted me to write. FINALLLY!!!! Someone was not afraid to say that Bush was in charged when 9-11 happened. I'm so tired of your CNN anchors allowing this "Bush kept us safe after 9-11" with no one asking what happen before.. That goes for Wolf, John King, Lou Dodds allow all Bushies to get away with it.
You and Jack are the only reason I even tune into CNN. You are not afraid to throw high and inside instead of lobbing softball questions. I hope you share this with your anchors or at least tell them watch you.

Keep up the good work

Sad that it came to this in the Miss USA Pageant, but she's is right in my eyes & GOD's. GOD loves u no matter who u are, that he gave us the right to choose, but also told & showed us the way to salvation.

Same sex is not the right way......Sorry....simple as that!!!!!!!!!!

Rick- I am the son of a retired police officer. I grew up being exposed to the men who deal with death, violence and the worst of our society on a daily basis. Imagine, being a young police officer, learning to cope with these things on a daily basis. It's not a suprise that they become alchoholics or violent towards their own families. The problem with the municiaplities who employ these men as police officers is that they don't acknowledge the emotional issues that arise as a result of their exposure to daily inundation by societies criminal element.. This officer was coping in the only way he had, after experiencing the horrible reality of his job. He was getting drunk with his buddies and dealing with it by using "Gallows Humor". A completely natural reaction among soldiers and other people who deal with death on a daily basis. Don't attack him. Help Him!!!

I’m a heterosexual male of the age of 48. I find it very hard to understand Religious Phobias and Homophobia, who gives a flying rat’s ass about who is boinking who?
I think gays and lesbians should be allowed to wed, they have just as much right to be miserable as any other pair of law abiding tax paying citizen that enjoys their rights under the Constitution. Does anyone remember the Construction? How about it’s first amendment the bill of wrights?

CT-producer   April 20th, 2009 6:15 pm ET

it's always so interesting how the bible beaters like to interpret the sections of the bible that seem to support their opinions so literally, but are perfectly willing to accept the rest of it as an abstract analogy.

there seems to be lots of outright ignorance in this comment thread, and i agree that none of us should care who's having sex with who, or who marries who for that matter. how is your life affected by whether or not homosexual people are allowed to marry one another? i'd be willing to bet that many of the people screaming the loudest about how wrong it's supposed to be have some of the most dysfunctional, twisted marriages.

i just dont think that people who are personally happy and secure spend as much time and energy focused on trying to make sure that other people wont have the right to be as happy as possible, when it doesnt hurt another living soul.

Hello Mr. Rick
Though we may never know for sure how this affected her score; the point is.. it appears so- and is is the logical conclusion anyone would make from reading the headlien, and watching the clip.

It is unfortunate that such a loaded question would be asked in a pageant, by an obviously biased judge, who by his body language showed his immediate disapproval.

If anything, this is a wake up call to the people, that freedom of speech is being challenged and must be allowed to reign free.

If an opinion is asked for, one must feel comfortable to express oneself with fear of being negatively descriminated.

chris semon   April 20th, 2009 6:55 pm ET

I agree with the lady's comment in that I am for traditional marriage between a man and women. Something that has been considered wrong for thousands of years, doesn't become right all of a sudden. That is why it is usually voted down by most people. Nationwide, huger numbers are against it than for it. Yet, most people are quieter about it to be polite. Love your show. I agree with a lot of Rick's comments.

Barbara Thompson   April 20th, 2009 7:22 pm ET

Yes indeed she got screwed out of the Miss USA title just by ans. the question about gay marriage..She by far was the most beautiful and poised of the 2..That question should never have been ask in the first place and of course not by a gay man...If he didn't want her to ans it truthfully then he should not have ask it. It was a loaded question and the title should be given to her now ..If I was Donald Trump I would do somthing about this and if he's any man what so ever he will...Or either tell the contestants that they should never ans the questions truthfully just pc.

Totally inappropriate question – You're gonna be criticized if you answer either way. This is a BEAUTY CONTEST, not a political contest. What is our world coming to – all these people against traditional marriage trying to propagandize the Miss USA Pageant. Shameful – At least she gave an honest answer – although I'm sure she knew what a minefield it would be – I applaud her.....

Gay Love has not be wrong, or outlawed forever. It has been execptable in past cultures, and is widely known throughout History. in Rome, gay sex was in all the bathhouses in Cesar's day. Go back to school and learn, and please don't think going to church will give you an education. that's called brain-washing.

Steve Cowan   April 20th, 2009 8:51 pm ET

I love you or saying what you did,you won! The states that legalize same sex marriage is wrong, they can live together but they can not be married, marriage is between one man and one woman. What disease they get, they can keep. Same as single women with kids and our country paying them, Hold the two accountable, one women and one man again. Not married, no adoption either.WRONG

James   April 20th, 2009 9:40 pm ET

Rick , only a man and a woman is natural ; in a same sex relation somebody got to play the woman somebody got to play the man sooner or later and every homosexual knows that . In a natural relationship it is the only way and it is an anatomical fact . Should somebody legislate against an un-natural choice involving two people ?? Yes it should be at least until age of 21 (personally I'd say ban homosexual interaction for life - naturally it is a dead in relationship) .When a beautiful woman can not give an answer of her own belief that is natural and anatomically "correct" it is a must to initiate another venue of respect and honor for our young ladies . Send this to encourage her and if I was younger I would be proud to have my date to give that answer . James

Martha M Planck   April 20th, 2009 9:52 pm ET

I have no doubt that that Miss California lost out because of her reply. Which is really a shame. She was asked her opinion and she gave it. She should not have been denied the title because she answered the question truthfully. It seems that these days if you do not agree with the media and/or far left that you are some kind of a kook, or red-neck.

Ignoring the Real Cause of Our Economic Crisis

After over eight years of allowing big business to replace American workers with cheaper foreign workers our politicians want to resolve our economic crisis with bailouts of the greedy corporations that got us into this dilemma. The only real solution is to return to manufacturing and selling products within the United States.

Americans shouldn't be surprised because its probably the Democrats, or like the Democrats, You can say anything you want but if you disagree with them they attack.. They don't believe in honesty, they believe in thier way at all cost.... Democrats always agree the end justifies the means...........lie, steal, cheat, and even murder to win...Its a shame it got that way but now anything goes....Just Win at all cost!!

E. D. Broker......You are NOT a Christian....YOUR A MORON!! Christ does not hate the sinner, He hates the SIN!! Christ is against Prostitution, Crimes, Divorce, HomosexuaL lOVE OR MARRIAGE AND NOBODY ARE FIXATED ON ANY OF THE ABOVE, EXCEPT YOU!!!!I If you are in favor of any of the above, You can't call yourself a Cristian, and don't hate them, Pray for them....

Cheryl Isgrigg   April 20th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

About Miss California, some say the question should not have been asked and maybe so, but she was specifically asked her opinion and THAT IS WHAT SHE GAVE!!! She did nothing wrong and should not be punished for it. And her OWN opinion does NOT have to be politically correct, it's her personal opinion, nothing more!!!
The judge who showed bias and unfairly judged her should be fired and they should give the new judge the opportunity to judge her fairly and let that decision stand. Not one from a person who openly slammed her on the Internet,( calling her a dumb b****), for all the world to read. He should not be allowed to judge anyone, he doesn't know how to keep HIS personal opinions out of it. They have rules to go by too!!!!!

LauraLee   April 20th, 2009 11:41 pm ET

Good for the young lady! Marriage is not just about two adults but is insituted for the good of society. The most important people in society are children because they determine our future. The laws must protect little children from being legally adopted by two women or two men because children need the guidance of both male and female parents. No law can guarantee that an adopted child will receive ideal love from his or her parents, but no law should ever guarantee that some children can NEVER receive what they need, namely a father and a mother.

Joe Cilento   April 21st, 2009 12:49 am ET

Are you kidding me? If someone is going to be judged on her family upbringing and answering a question honestly, there is something very disturbing about the judges themselves! Here is my politically correct answer: homosexuals should not be judging these contests. Her answer was valid and sincere. This is a discrace. Its fine that these gays want to fight for mariage but its not okay for a homosapien to express her beliefs during a contest where she was asked a question. Get over yourself you queers because the human race wouldnt exist without normal sexual relationships!

dfortruth   April 21st, 2009 1:26 am ET

She gave a good answer, it's funny how he judged her on her answer, but called her a b**** and no one in the media questions him on that.

Gays say they want people to respect their rights, well respect my right to believe in what the Holy Bible teaches about same sex marriage. Read Romans chapter One. You have a right to choose to be gay, I have a right to choose to be a Christian, I do not hate gay people, and yes they have a right to choose. Love the sinner, but hate the sin, and remember we all have sinned and fallen short in God's eyes. That why He gave His Son.

I won't judge all gays the same, and you should not judge all Christians the same. You say you believe you were born that was, I say I am born again, a sinner saved by grace.

ironmen1987   April 21st, 2009 6:17 am ET

Funny how people are quick to say she doesn't represent America. If you look at the states that have put this matter to a vote, i'd say she is right in line with the majority. Their "agenda" only works through the backdoor.....

CarrieC   April 21st, 2009 6:36 am ET

Even though I am glad Miss North Carolina won (home state shout out), Prez was an influence in the outcome of Miss California. This could result in a law suit against the Miss Universe organization and Prez for discrimination by Miss California family. I doubt this would happen but you never know about these things.

Charlie Passacantando   April 21st, 2009 7:51 am ET

Hey Rick, You guys ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Miss CA, came in 2nd obviously because MISS NC beat her! Really quite simple. If Ms CA's answer was so bad, why was she not 4th runner up. Her honest answer helped her beat 2nd runner up. No? How do you figure?

sparkie6   April 21st, 2009 8:15 am ET

There are a lot of ignorant people here. We don't have to call it Marriage we can call it a civil union. all we want are the same rights as a union that a man and a women have. You put to much bases on sex. Being gay is not just about sex. we love each other as people just as a man and a women do. You can call the union whatever you want as long as we get out civil rights. People are getting hungup on the word Marriage.

Esmum   April 21st, 2009 9:24 am ET

I think it may have impacted with the judge who asked the question but if he didn't want an honest answer to his question he shouldn't have asked it. I appreciate that she held to her convictions and didn't back off just because she was on tv and just say something to appease that judge. We still have the right to our own opinion and that's what he asked her for.

B. Letts   April 21st, 2009 9:33 am ET

Look. Plain and simple. California lost for TWO legitimate reasons, and was tainted by an additional reason as well.

1. She placed 2nd to NC's swimsuit AND evening wear scores!!! The scores were posted! Did everyone miss them?

2. Before the Q&A segment, she was in 2nd place, which would require a GREAT answer in order to come in 1st. She did not have a GREAT answer. This topic has been a main topic in the media and in California for quite some time. She, as well as the other contestants, should have expected this question and I expected a better preparation of the answer. Whether it was the pressure of the stage or just lack of preparation, her answer was not the best formulated answer.

Perez did not MAKE her lose (your giving him WAY to much power). North Carolina Simply WON. Give credit where it is due. It's disrespectful to her hard work.

*In addition, this Adam and Steve thing is getting old. I also am a Christian, but if you read your Genesis correctly, God made the trees before he made man. The tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil was there before we were. CHOICE was there before MARRIAGE was. OUR God let's us choose everyday! Who are WE to choose for others. We, as Christians, would be in a terrible state if we lived in a country where we weren't allowed to CHOOSE Christianity or Heterosexuality. Suppose we had to rely on old laws and couldn't CHOOSE to change them, even Christian laws. Suppose we still couldn't have divorces, even if men beat their wives or had affairs. Suppose we didn't allow women to speak in the church! Suppose we we killed for having sex outside of wedlock. This happened in Christianity before, as well as other countries, but we were able to CHOOSE to change it.

I guess it's easy to deny choice when you're in the majority. Maybe, in order to relate, you would've had to know the feeling of being in a minority.

Rain   April 21st, 2009 10:43 am ET

People should get off this girl's back. She told them her opinion and what she believes in. This is America. She doens't have to believe in same sex marriage or anything else for that matter. Give it a rest. Besides, that idiot freak that asked the question only did it for his own personal reasons. I don't think it has anything to do with her being crowned.

Getting pretty sick of this country trying to make everything and anything accepted and the"norm". I don't have to accept anything if I don't want to. I am not hurting anyone and going around getting in hate fights and whatever. This crap is annoying.

sparkie6   April 21st, 2009 11:13 am ET

Well said B. Letts and it is the first time I have heard that a person chose heterosexuality. Thanks for that.

J Rose   April 21st, 2009 11:38 am ET

The beautiful young lady answered the question humbly and honestly.

Perez doesn't do anything for his gay lifestyle cause. His rantings and attacks are crude and explosive and just prove the point that he is not normal.

Debbie Reid   April 21st, 2009 11:47 am ET

All of the top 5 contestants should have been asked the same question... Put them all in a "sound proof" booth like they did years ago. It would have been interesting to hear how the other top 5 answered the same question at that moment in time. It would have evened the playing field.

coony 2   April 21st, 2009 12:28 pm ET

OK Sparkie 6, do what ever, two people of the same sex should not get any benifits that being married do, it is wrong, no way should to gays be able to raise a child, if you can not produce them yourself, we do not need to be teaching kids such a thing as this, kids deserve a mommy and a daddy.

jean   April 21st, 2009 12:37 pm ET

The people responding to your bolg are idiots!!!

hattie3030   April 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

I am not a Christian. I consider myself a liberal. I think we should all have civil unions, gay or straight, and let the churches do whatever they want to do. I do not think she should have been demonized for her answer. What's more, the big deal that's being made over her saying "opposite" and "in my country" is unfair. She was nervous, okay? She was put on the spot and was trying not to panic. Maybe her lack of poise was part of what cost her the crown, but this savage mockery of Ms. Prejean is unseemly and wrong.

jean   April 21st, 2009 12:46 pm ET

The people responding to your blog are out of touch with the real world. Maybe they should listen instead of just passing judgement on others for their opinion just because it's not like theirs. We are still suppose to be free.

Anna Marie   April 21st, 2009 12:53 pm ET

I have to admit I didn't watch the Pageant. I did however watch Miss California answer Perez's question. First of all, I believe that Miss California was asked this question because it is a hot topic. California just went through loosing the battle of same sex marriages. I believe it was a fair question to ask under the circumstances. Listening to her answer, I feel it was her answer as a whole that may have cost her the crown, not her personal opinion. You could tell she was very nervous in answering the question which is understandable. However, she couldn't keep composed under pressure. "Opposite marriage" what is that? Her answer just seemed not very well put together. First she says that we live in a free country where we can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage. Although we can choose our partner, we cannot choose to be married if we are in a same sex relationship. I don't think Miss California's opposition to same sex marriage cost her the crown, her overall answer did.

Rockymoso   April 21st, 2009 1:10 pm ET

As a gay man all I can say to her is : "What were you thinking, for Christ's sakes?!".Beauty contest....gay men..Hellooo!!!!.Wrong place to say anything against the gay community.Try the Mormon Church.

Willie   April 21st, 2009 2:08 pm ET

Hello Rick
Sounds like Mr. Hilton should get a grip on reality, in america and everyone has a right to voice His or Her opinion, whether you agree with that opinion or not. The reaction of this judge only reflects his narrow-mindedness and insecurity.

Willie

Lauren Chubbuck   April 21st, 2009 2:43 pm ET

Hey Rick,
When it comes down to it, the times are really changing and yeah she should have taken into effect that Perez was the one asking the question but that isn't totally why she didn't win. I believe we are looking for a Miss America that can adapt and change with the times and if she isn't keeping up, that's the real problem.

Bill   April 21st, 2009 2:53 pm ET

What does bare skin, pretty teeth, gr8t smile, attractive figure & perfect manicures have n common with sensitive issues n the country and/or world??
Rename it Bueracacy Pageant

Kyle Bakke   April 21st, 2009 3:15 pm ET

How did Perez Hilton, gossp-queen, become the spokesman for the gay community? Why are legitimate news organizations giving all the air time to him and not soliciting the opinions of the leaders of the gay community?

Sadly, mainstream media is becoming more like the tabloids while the tabloids seem to be becoming more like the mainstream.

praiseGOD   April 21st, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Kudos to Carrie for standing on Godly principals! A Heavenly crown is better than a worldy one!

Alexander Nakatani   April 21st, 2009 3:21 pm ET

While I don't agree with her position, she is entitled to her opinion. I prefer and respect her for her honesty. Those of us who support and embrace same sex marriages should demand respect for our honesty as well. This is what it means to be an American. Disagree with respect, almost non-existent these days.

JBK   April 21st, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Same-sex marriage aside, was this really the best California could do for a pageant?! I've seen better looking women with missing teeth!

Frank   April 21st, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Rick,

Since the question posed by Mr. Hilton seems to be such an emotionally charged one (for him), he should have recused himself from the judge's position to eliminate the possiblity of bias in his vote...

Jeannie   April 21st, 2009 3:24 pm ET

In reference to the Craiglist killer, this should be a lesson for everone to beware of internet meetings. There are preditors out there that do not look like monsters but like everyday people. It boggles my mind why anyone would advertise personal services on line. They're asking for trouble! thanks!

MrsTaz   April 21st, 2009 3:28 pm ET

While not articulate, Carrie answered her question respectfully and honestly. Perez Hilton's behavior since the broadcast has been hypocritical. He is discriminating against Carrie for her belief. I believe in gay marriage but I think Perez is acting childishly.

Jenny   April 21st, 2009 3:31 pm ET

One wonders why she thought she would have won the contest? Even if she had answered the question differently, she was not assured the crown. She has stirred up debate and in the end got what she wants – exposure.

Michael   April 21st, 2009 3:31 pm ET

1st: Brazilians speak Portuguese NOT Brazilian!!
2nd: I believe the President was right to release the torture information as it is vitally important to ensure that nobody believes they have the right to torture even if presently given permission by an administration. Wrong remains wrong.
3rd: Miss California does not have an opinion, she is to dumb for that. It is someone else’s opinion. If she did, then she would not have hesitated in her answer.

CH   April 21st, 2009 3:32 pm ET

I give her kudos for standing by her opinion and beliefs...very difficult to find a genuine person that doesn't mold their beliefs to what other people want.

dukeelway   April 21st, 2009 3:32 pm ET

How about giving her props for speaking her mind and not what she thought would be what that 'guy' perceived as correct?

praiseGod   April 21st, 2009 3:32 pm ET

Rick, Hilton's question was not hard to answer. Miss Cal told the truth, and the truth shall set you free! Praise God!

Big Time   April 21st, 2009 3:33 pm ET

Why was Perez Hilton even judging this female beauty contest!

Danny   April 21st, 2009 3:33 pm ET

Please don't give Perez anymore airtime! The young lady answered the question honestly. Perez deserves none of the the attention he's getting.

Oscar   April 21st, 2009 3:34 pm ET

All she said was that she was glad people have a choice to marry who they want, but that her values define mairage in the traditional sense. Is there no room for people to hold their values while still acknowledging that others' values are different and ok?

Harry   April 21st, 2009 3:34 pm ET

Rick, His question was a matter of opinion.
Obviously her opinion differs from him. So does hundreds of thousands of other Americans' opinions.
None of this should cost her anything... Except the waste of time for someone asking such an irrelevant question.

Les   April 21st, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Mr. Hilton says in his latest explanation on your show says that her answer divisive and does not bring us together. So I guess what he is saying is he woudl rather be lied to than hear the truth. I would bet that if the issue was put to a nation wide vote that most Americans would vote against gay marriage. So once again we have to not speak our mind to please the minority. I think she might have been a little more eloquent in her response, but she didn’t lie about it or try to cover it up… Good for her and God Bless her.

Sockz09   April 21st, 2009 3:35 pm ET

It's awesome that personal freedom to say what one wishes only seems to extend to agreement with one's own views. shame on you mr. hilton, for letting her disagreement with your views influence your opinion on her.

Tony   April 21st, 2009 3:36 pm ET

Thank You, Miss California for standing for what you believe. The same sex marriage institution is morally wrong and I appreciate you voicing your opinion. Even though they say it cost you the title, you are still a "winner" to me.

barbara   April 21st, 2009 3:38 pm ET

So, if the judge has his way that means that any contestant for any title has to be for gay rights? I find that offensive. Maybe some questions should not be used that are so politically charged. That's what I believe this is all about not how she said it but that she does not agree.

Emily   April 21st, 2009 3:38 pm ET

Gay marriage is such a controversial issue. I don't believe it was fair to ask her this question. Either way she answered, someone would have been offended or as Hilton put it alienated. She gave her opinion which was exactly what she was asked to do. I believe that we should be applauding her for holding a valid opinion and not flaking out to please the crowd. Way to go Ms. California!

C. Powell   April 21st, 2009 3:39 pm ET

Rick

Most days I think you get it right...today I am not so sure!

Mr. Hilton is dead wrong and it seemed as if you were siding with him. Lets look at the facts.

He asked her for HER opionion and she gave her honest answer. If he could not handle hearing her opionion then he should not have asked the question.

C

Demetrius Brown   April 21st, 2009 3:39 pm ET

Hilton was totally wrong for reacting the way he did! He was in the honored position of being a judge and acted like a kid throwing a temper tantrum, and calling her Bitch and other derogatory names because he didn't like her answer. He showed a real lack of class and should not have been allowed to pose such a question if he could'nt handle the anwser. Half of America is against same-sex marriage,... does that mean every time time he does'nt hear want he wants he starts name calling and acting incredibly unprofessional?
Or, put another way, I am against same-sex marriage, so if I ask Mr. Hilton how he feels about the matter, and says he's for it, does that give me the right to start calling him Fag or other less than flattering names because he does not agree with my position on the matter?

Kathy M.   April 21st, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Please no more airtime for Perez Hilton. I did not watch the pageant, nor will I ever want to now. How did this loon make it in as a judge? Whether he personally agreed with Miss California's answer or not; it gave him no right to attack her in such a disrespectful, hateful manner.

Lourdes   April 21st, 2009 3:41 pm ET

Rick,

There is so much more going on in the world and we are hearing about Perez Hilton's. You should leave him to his blogging, this way I can choose not to listen to what he has to blah...blah..blah..about.

Sue   April 21st, 2009 3:41 pm ET

Perez Hilton mentions that Carrie's answer was not "all inclusive". All inclusive to whom? To you? Had she said she was in support of gay marriage, she would not be "all inclusive" of those who appose it. Who is Perez Hilton anyway,...and who cares what he thinks. Whatever!!!

Joe   April 21st, 2009 3:42 pm ET

How was she inarticulate Rick ? She spoke clean and clear. My question is why is Perez Hilton asking questions at Miss America Pageant? And what was wrong with her answer. Get off of it already. I live in California and voted against same sex marriage just like the remainder of the majority. You have your freedom's yes so go to a state that allows gay marriage California voted against it. Just because you don't get your way doesn't mean you should protest and cry about it.

Al   April 21st, 2009 3:42 pm ET

All I hear on tv is how miss California was mistreated,
I think the real results were, Miss North Carolina was the Best looking Woman.

tom r.   April 21st, 2009 3:43 pm ET

I just viewed your interview with the gay Perez Hilton ( supposed judge of Miss U.S.A. ) and his opinion of Ms. Carrie Prejean he was completely off-base. Why in the world would any organization allow an avowed Frute to be a judge and ask a politically-charged question and be offended by her answer.
As far as being gay is concerned...marriage in the eyes of god is between a MAN and a WOMAN

Lucil   April 21st, 2009 3:44 pm ET

It is so sad that honesty is fast disappearing in America, and political correctness has taken over. The judge in my opinion showed he is not a happy person, and people should be allowed to express their differences or opinions without being punished for that; and that is the essence of America – FREEDOM TO EXPRESS ONESELF.
Thanks.

SA   April 21st, 2009 3:44 pm ET

I am glad she expressed her option. This is what America is all about,
freedom of speech. Why is it if you disagree with Perez Hilton, or Prez Obama then you are a hater. We should be free to speak our minds.

Terra   April 21st, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Perez took her opinion personal..Why would he even bring up a question like that? Some have asked. Perez love drama !!!!! That was his time to stur up some mess. That's who he is that's what he do..

Marie Prevost   April 21st, 2009 3:45 pm ET

If you don't want to hear the answer don't ask the question. It's too bad we can't state our opinions without being "called names" and "beaten up verbally". We should be able to respect other people's opinion even if we don't agree with them.

corey   April 21st, 2009 3:48 pm ET

I am disappointed with Perez Hilton. He makes no sense in critisizing Ms. California for her comments. As an American, she is entitled to an opinion – even more, her stance is one shared by many American citizens. Her answer to his question was far from abbrasive or calous. However, his remark about her being a dumb b is offensive and hateful. I am surely glad America is not run by individuals such as him who would undoubtedly attempt to sensor speech and violate rights afforded by the Constitution.

Luckily, his occupation is covering the fantasy land called Hollywood and he "blogs" for a living.

Shame on you Perez Hilton.

Andrew   April 21st, 2009 3:48 pm ET

I agree with some of the responses of people below. Its a beauty pagent...not running for present. However, why should she be punished for what her belief is? She didn't say all should confirm to her beliefs. Is the moral of the story to young women is to "confirm" to whatever the popular belief is? And on the note, was Perez looking for Miss California to kiss up to him and say Homosexuality is the best thing in the world?

peggy grillo   April 21st, 2009 3:50 pm ET

You must be kidding me with this nonsense about miss california! I notic e that no one is upset about this ridiculous thing called a "beauty contest" . Tell Mr. Hilton to get a real job!!

Dwayne Dufer   April 21st, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Carrie Prejean still has her good morals. Perez Hilton has no morals.

sean bowen   April 21st, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Rick,

Since when do we punish people for being honest ? This beautiful girl spoke from her heart stateing her belief, does Perez believe she is alone in her belief ? Why is it that the gay population can say whatever they like but if one straight person says something its inappropriate.

What a world we live in, your entitled to your opinion as long as its what everyone wants to hear

Rick:

On Miss California and PerezHilton:

"It is the tragedy of the world that no one knows what he doesn't know; and the less a man knows, the more sure he is that he knows everything." Joyce Cary 1888-1957

D SNOW   April 21st, 2009 3:52 pm ET

Rick,

It is very obvious that Parez Hilton has an agenda and was not an unbais Judge.
The people running the pagent owe both Miss. Cal. and Miss No. Carolina an apoligy.
Pagents need to vent their judges.
This is one of the reasons viewership has declined over the past few years.

Jim Vandermaas   April 21st, 2009 3:54 pm ET

This seems to be yet another time when political correctness collides head on with character, values, and honesty... America is supposed to be a free speech country, yet the honest expression of one woman's opinions and values is disparaged because it doesn't fit what 'some' want to hear. Without conscious, he set this woman up to further his own cause; does she lie to win, or stick to the character, values & ideals we all should hold dear and answer the question honestly? Then revelling in his new found notoriety, exercising his free speech, goes on to disparage & degrade her further, even calling her names... Mr Hilton, with his 'don't care who I hurt' attitude and free speech hypocrasy, obviously set her up to find his own limelight and is doing more damage to his cause than Miss California ever could...

Mike from Indy   April 21st, 2009 3:56 pm ET

If we make the assumptions that pro gay marriage is a liberal position, and that anti gay marriage is a conservative position, does this mean that Perez Hilton and others like him want to ban conservatives from competing in beauty pageants?

viv   April 21st, 2009 3:57 pm ET

hi rick,
never thought in my whildest dreams that america will become like this. it was always about beauty inside out remember? but some how even in this a beauty pagent if you cant be political you cant win. i feel that young lady spoke from her heart and because she spoke the truth it cost her. i also looked at that person who called her a bitch in your openion who is the beautiful person him or her at least she up heald her family values what did he up held? in my mind for her to answer that way speak volumes about the way she was raised and i feel so blest to know that there are still genuine people out there. her family should be very proud of her. and to that guy he should shut up because empty vessels keep the most noise.

Vicki from NJ   April 21st, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Perez Hilton is the one who should be apologizing to Ms. California for his nasty remarks. I'm proud of her and she was fair with that question response across the board. As usual, gays are never satisfied unless they shove their views down our throats and we have to spit it back out in a way to satisfy them. Marriage is between a man and a woman as a lot of us believe. Sorry to have to elighten Hilton to that fact, but....it's still a fact and he should be shamed of his behavior.

George Irbe   April 21st, 2009 3:57 pm ET

It is a sad time for America when a miserable excuse for a human being (Mr. Hilton) can sit in judgment on a young lady (Miss California).

Milo Kazerbe   April 21st, 2009 3:59 pm ET

This is one of the most egregious public displays of disrespect for human beings that I have seen in recent times. The Gay and Lesbian Rights movement is having a hard enough time without getting slammed by a pompous, self-absorbed, mouthpiece for the Republican right.

I mean, come on–it's just so obvious.

P.S. - She should have wished for world peace.

Jason   April 21st, 2009 3:59 pm ET

I can't believe we are not able to have an opinion no more. This Perez guy should be able to handle these issues as an adult. Attitude! Way to make an ass of yourself on tv.

Dave in PA   April 21st, 2009 4:00 pm ET

We have enough representatives who do not believe in equal rights under the law, why would we want one in a bikini? She cost herself a chance at the title by virtue of her answer, and the judges were right to weigh it accordingly. These role models are influential to the young, and those with weak minds – both of which get enough negative input as it is.

W. M. Prudhomme   April 21st, 2009 4:01 pm ET

Carrie Prejean, thank you for taking a stand for yourself and all of us who believe in the traditional values of this great country.

Carrie was asked to give her opinion. In her answer, she allowed room for people to make their own choices, but she spoke also of her individual and family values. That is as fair and accepting as anyone could be.

I think she was penalized for her answer. It is no mystery. Perez Hilton made his feelings clear on his blog and in later interviews.

I think Perez committed the exact injustice for which he wants to blame Carrie (though she did not alienate, but made space for choice). Perez has insulted and disrespected Carrie. Why?...because she spoke clearly about her values and lifestyle. Isn't that all the gay community wants?...to be able to live their lives w/out being treated unfairly or not be penalized for their values. The gay community must also allow the straight community to be able to voice our opinions, w/out hating us or punishing us for our beliefs.

Carrie, you are indeed my Miss USA!

jesus carreon   April 21st, 2009 4:02 pm ET

about that reporter from El Paso, I am this cop's neighbor, and let's just say that i got some reliable information about some nasty argument between that cop and his wife the night before of the incident, his doctor told him to start using male enhancers, he refused, wife got very upset, she was telling him he had to , otherwise she was going to leave, i guess that explains this guy's frustration, turning it into power abuse, i think he believes that if he can not control his wife, he can surely abuse the people from El Paso.

Erzsi   April 21st, 2009 4:02 pm ET

Really do not care relating to this subject. There is more in this world to deal with other then some spat with some beauty pagent woman and Perez Hilton.

Dolores Jackson   April 21st, 2009 4:02 pm ET

I have great respect and admiration for Miss California. Right On! she answered with her honest opinion . She will carry many crowns . It was her opinion or Perez Hilton's opinion . I have no respect for Perez Hilton. (my opinion). Thank you.

BM1908   April 21st, 2009 4:03 pm ET

The question needs repeating: DID IT AFFECT HER FINISH IN THE PAGEANT? most of the anwnsers here seem like attempts at spin control by whichever "group" is trying to win a debate about a much different issue.

Annee   April 21st, 2009 4:04 pm ET

Perez Hilton will not tolerate an anti-gay-marriage Miss USA, but he would have had no problem with her being dishonest. I say kudos to Miss California for giving her honest opinion, which is what she was asked for. And Perez needs to get off his soap-box and broaden his mind.

Didn't Watch It but.....   April 21st, 2009 4:05 pm ET

The Miss America ratings are down. It would be yesterday's news if this controversy hadn't come up.

Rose Vanneman   April 21st, 2009 4:09 pm ET

I may be biased–I"m a woman and live in California. I think "Miss California said exactly the right thing using the right words.

Remember that she began with
"I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other."
We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite (sex) marriage."

Followed by –
"And you know what, in my country, in my family, I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

I believe Miss California did it right. I hope Oprah has her a a guest very soon. Why? Because Oprah can get through the bias, even if it is mine...

Victoria Word   April 21st, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Miss America was giving an opinion that is shared with, I believe a high majority of the American people. I don't believe she should be held responsible for anyone else when it comes to their sexual preference. It has nothing to do with her qualifications. I also don't feel a small group of "judges" should have the sole right to decide the selection of who wins and represents the Miss America position. How about letting the nation vote and give their opinion, just like dancing with the stars, or American Idle? Then she would be a true Miss America choice.
Hilton appears to have a prejudice attitude himself against anyone who does not look at thing the way he does. He should not be allowed to be a judge. HE is not qualified.

jesus carreon   April 21st, 2009 4:15 pm ET

they wanted an answer, they got it in the most honest way,
I believe, as many other americans that marriage should be between a man and a woman, that is the way I think, I don't want to alienate anybody, gay people have their own opinions, I respect their freedom of speech, Miss California is very much entitled to her opinion, the gay community has a lot of smart and respectful people, and I can assure you they respect other people's opinions too.

Will   April 21st, 2009 4:18 pm ET

As for the question…Even though Perez Hilton is right, you should ask difficult questions, compared to the other questions it was by far the most difficult to answer “politically” correct. Why don’t we ask her about abortion next?

As for her answer…she should have answered it by using the words “traditional” marriage instead of saying “opposite”, but again the question should have never been allowed in.

Personally I would rather have a Miss America that stated her true opinion…liked or not and NOT what is “politically” correct. Maybe we can go back to asking everyone how much they want to end world poverty next year.

I hope she gets a chance to shoot some hoops with Obama one day!

Brent   April 21st, 2009 4:25 pm ET

Good Job! Miss California.....it was a tough question and it should have not been allowed, it wasn’t a fair question, but Miss California you did great expressing your belief. Perez Hilton should never be allowed to work again.....he was totally wrong to express his thoughts publicly about her answer and to call her “names”. Miss California spoke the truth about same sex marriage...true Christians don’t try to be politically correct...a political correct Christian serves the devil not God......Marriage is between a man and a woman,,,,,but in the end because everyone wants to be politically correct, governments will soon allow marriage to take place between a “woman and woman” or “man and man” but in the end when they are judge by Jesus they will lose. Hell will be full homosexual marriages..No matter how you look at being politically correct, right is right and wrong is wrong. Heaven or Hell you choose!!!!

Margaret K   April 21st, 2009 4:29 pm ET

I don't see a thing wrong with what she said. I was raised Catholic and I would have said the same thing. I don't think that because I believe one way and another person believes another that we should be critized for not believing in same sex marriages. I believe sexuality is being shoved down my children's faces. I believe that this is a Free World and we have a right to our own beliefs without political issues being shoved down our faces. Just because someone smokes should give them the right to kill me with lung cancer but they should be able to smoke in places where smoking is allowed without being harrassed by those that don't smoke, so goes for the sexual issue of same sex marriage why should it be shoved down my throat and my families if I don't believe in it. I believe that politics does control out comes. I believe that she was put down for what she believed in.

Linda   April 21st, 2009 4:31 pm ET

What is scary to me about this, is that now that precedent has been set, this will happen repeatedly in various avenues. Your OPINION and FREEDOM OF SPEECH has just come under attack in such a way that your OPINION could now cost you a promotion or a job, or even placement in the college of your choice, clearly in beauty pageants.

Miss Prejean knew as soon as she heard the question what was at stake for her, and yet she remained true to her OPINION. That took a lot of courage. I applaud her.

John Ulstrom   April 21st, 2009 4:39 pm ET

Let me try this again. I am totally against what Perez Hilton did to Miss California. I believe marriage should only be between a man and a woman. The reason I am against everything gay is because of the way they treated me 40 years ago when I was in my late teens and early twenties. Literally, dozens of times, I was approached by gay men who wanted to be "friends" with me. It took one invitation "to come up to my place" to figure out what they were up to. I was sure of my sexuality but had I not been, I don't know what would have happened. I wonder why the gays get so much press and ink when they are such a small part of the population ( 1% the last I heard). No one, to my knowledge, has ever discussed this part of the gay lifestyle. I think it would put a whole new light on the lifestyle if someone would bring this up. It might also protect some young people from being unknowingly taken into the lifestyle.

She says that in this country "We have a right to choose" She is correct! In her family they choose marriage between a man & woman. Their choice. 4 states believe in gay marriage. That means 46 states are on Miss California's side! Also, listen when she says between a man & woman...there is spontaneous applause that begins from the audience. Who is Perez Hilton? A clebrity blogger?? Wow, he holds down an important position. Let's listen to this guy's wisdom! The media is giving this clown more than his share of fame. You should call Donald Trump. That's the "best" he could get for that show?

Jim Vandermaas   April 21st, 2009 4:45 pm ET

Rick, you kept calling Miss California in-articulate, seemingly because she didn't say what the 'politically correct' crowd expected to hear... As Rose put it above:
Remember that she began with
“I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other.”
We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite (sex) marriage.”

Followed by –
“And you know what, in my country, in my family, I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

It does seem that she covered the question in a very articulate manner, especially considering she was put on the spot in a no win situation – do I lie or do I stick to my values... Miss California answered that she thinks it's great we have the freedom to chose, and had the courage to state her specific belief... That to me is strong character and we should've been proud to have her represent us! Are some of us so closed minded as to think that you can't disagree with someones choices while still defending their right to have that choice? Our Constitution seems to think so, as does Miss California...!

Patricia Teijeiro Paulson   April 21st, 2009 4:47 pm ET

Of course it impacted the outcome. You had a gay man as one of the judges, DUH! They asked her opinion and she gave it to them, politely I might add. Now she's being slammed in every gay-liberal-leftist news organization on the planet, why? For stating "her" opinion. If she had responded by taking the opposite position, not only would she have won the title, she would have been awarded the Medal of Freedom. Evidently, now that we have a Democratic held [hostage] White House, Congress and House of Representatives, if someone asks you for "your" opinion, you had better ask them what opinion they want you to have. Funny how liberals scream about 1st Amendment Rights, Free Speach, ect. until someone says something they don't like. Then it's, "Off with her head"!

Mukoo   April 21st, 2009 4:51 pm ET

I think she lacked eloquence and proper articulation in her response and that's why she didn't get selected (or at least I hope that's why!) She said yes and no all in the same breath. I don't think she lacks intelligence, maybe she just didn't expect such a loaded question. The fact that she couldn't respond with a clear answer is what we should focus on. This really shouldn't be allowed to be a question on how moral or politically correct she is. Considering how our society is selective on what is moral or politically correct... I'm tired of how we're approaching the fight for our marriage equality, lets stick with facts in the court room and leave the clowns in the media circus!

marie flynn   April 21st, 2009 5:03 pm ET

Hey Rick,
Just making a correction to my previous comment re: Miss USA story–
It contained a few typos and one of the sentences should have read : " I just love the rightous indignation and vile hatred that the the far left radicals spew when someone doesn't agree with THEIR political agenda.
This seems to be particularly true in the gay community, where ( and I'm just going to tell the politically incorrect truth now ) gay men like Perez Hilton are more misogynistic than Chris Brown. They love to bash beautiful women.

Robert G   April 21st, 2009 5:04 pm ET

Miss California's could have been more articulate. That said, listen to our elected officials, television personalities, athletes and musicians answer layup questions. Their difficulty responding with more than "Yes", "No" or some guttural annunciation is comical. My dog has more sophisticated communication skills than the average MTV reality show participant (see Flav-A-Flav). We are happy when people speak passable English. Articulate never enters the equation.

What is "opposite marriage"? Why should the word marriage even need to be modified to convey the traditional definition? Finally, what does a flaming homosexual know about beautiful women? Answer: NOTHING.

JOHN   April 21st, 2009 5:06 pm ET

YO RICK, ITS GREAT MISS CALIFORNIA VOICED HER OPINION ON GAY MARRIAGE. AND SHE IS RIGHT!! THE FACT THAT CNN HAD TO RUN TO THE NEAREST GAY PERSON FOR THEIR TAKE ON THE SUBJECT IS WHAT REALLY ANNOYED ME! GAY RIGHTS ARE NOT CIVIL RIGHTS, A PERSON WHO WAS BORN WITH A DIFFERENT SKIN COLOR WAS BORN THAT WAY AND DESERVES NOT, NOT RICK, TO BE DISCREMINATED AGAINST. GAY PEOPLE ARE NOT BORN GAY, THEY MAKE A CHOICE. WHEN SOMEBODY STANDS UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT THEY GET CRUCIFIED BY THE ESTABLISHMENT MEDIA. I WILL NOT EVER TROD ON A GAY PERSON BECAUSE I THINK I HAVE TO BUT THE MEDIA TRAMPLES ALL OVER THE PEOPLE WHO VOICE THEIR(FACTUALLY)RIGHT OPINIONS.

Pamela Devins   April 21st, 2009 5:22 pm ET

This question should have never been asked. Suppose she surprised everyone and said she was "gay", would she have won?
Perez Hilton say's she should be politically correct, and then calls her a dumb bitch. Well, he is a stereotypical gay person, to be polite. He has his own agenda. I am a liberal and voted to Obama, but I'll be damned if I have to "be politically correct, what ever that is. I'm not convinced that the definition of marriage should be changed. Can this woman sue the contest for having a judge with an agenda and because of his insults..

John Lopez   April 21st, 2009 5:57 pm ET

I respect the opinon of the Miss USA runner up. It was from the heart and it is a shame what their doing to her.

What ever happend to "We we the people" Why don't these states, their legislators and supreme courts allowed the people of those 4 or now maybe 5 states allowed the people of their states to vote on such an inportant issue.
They are doing the same thing as Chaves in Venezuela. Chaves is using the legislstors to pass what ever he whant whitout ragard to the people of Venezuela. If this is allowed to continue in our good USA what is going to happen to our country and Contitution

The Ludonian   April 21st, 2009 6:02 pm ET

I believe that she did what so many Americans could not have. She stood for what she believes and was not afraid to tell it. So many Americans live in fear of voicing their opinion because of the potential backlash of being labeled. More people, myself included, need to stand for what they believe and stop walking on egg shells. She answered the question honestly and without fear of peoples opinions. That is a rare person to be able to stand up in front of the nation and say that she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. Kudos to her.

Jay   April 21st, 2009 6:07 pm ET

Was her answer articulate? No. Does she have a right to her opinion? Yes. Should she have lost the pagent based on how she responded, not on her response, maybe.

Thank God for Barack. Hopefully with his dedication to education and teachers we, as a society, will remove ourselves from the DUMB and DUMBER existence that Bush has left behind. What a sad state we are in when Perez Hilton, he really stayed up late thinking of that one, can call an American woman a B*%@H because he doesn't agree with her response. If she would have called him a flaming F@&&*T every gay rights activist group would be screaming bloody murder. Where are they? Why are they not denouncing his behaviour?

Whether he meant it or not, Perez Hilton has just made avg Americans digger deeper trenches in their beliefs on gay marriage.

Ron Landen   April 21st, 2009 6:21 pm ET

Rick,

I thought Carrie Prejean’s answer was plenty articulate enough and right on as it is representative of the majority of the people of the United States. This was evidenced by the generous applause given to her answer by the audience! Unfortunately it is the modus operandi of gays to cram their agenda down the throats of the American people whether or not this represents the majority opinion of the people or not.

Rick, I would hope that you might have learned in your catechism studies as a young boy that marriage is a sacrament and as such was instituted by God as a union between a man and a woman. This is firmly backed up by His word in the scriptures. If you don’t believe me, perhaps you can ask the holy father what his opinion is. Perez Hilton’s mind is twisted by his perversions and you should have known better than to dignify him and his agenda with an appearance on your show.

Ron Landen

Jason   April 21st, 2009 6:32 pm ET

I second Barbara Hill.

It's not Prejean's opinion that lost her the pageant; it's her lack of ability to articulate her opinion. When I first listened to the clip, I thought of poor Miss Teen South Carolina a few years ago.

John   April 21st, 2009 7:58 pm ET

I just don't see how this idiot was made a judge. Miss California was honest and because Hilton didn't like her views he bashed her. Hilton also claims to not be a spokesperson for gays but he sure didn't seem that way on your show.

Mrs. Mayes   April 21st, 2009 9:04 pm ET

Carrie Prejean gave a Great answer to the question the judge Perez Hilton asked without prejudice to anyone's right to think what they want. I agree with her like most American do that marriage should be between a man and a woman the way God who made all of us intended it to be. Any one who would call a woman a dumb "B" should not be allowed to be the judge of anything. Perez Hilton is a bad influence on our children and society. Calling people nasty names and displaying the kind of action he did on the internet about her is the kind of behavior that sometimes causes people to commit sucide. People who act like Perez Hilton is a danger to our society. I feel he was prejudice toward her and the contest should be rejudged.

Mike O   April 21st, 2009 9:46 pm ET

We live in a country where we have the right to voice our opinion and as a judge; Hilton should have been able to seperate emotion from the job at hand. In reality the beauty pagent should be under investigation for not properly screening the judges. Everyone has a right to voice their opinion and not suffer punishment from it.

First off CNN showed cased live Perez Hilton vulgar speech saying the word B****h commenting about the miss beauty pageant contestant on her honest answer, all i have to say is what in the world is a gay guy doing jugging a womens beauty pageant, this is like a horse jugging a cows beauty, the politicaly correct answer of marriage in the websters dictionary is between a man and women that is the term period, gays should get there own meaning and get over it,this gay guy perez is a low life creature, yet CNN alowed him to air his vulgar speech, however this lowlife has not made me any kinder to his kind,i am appald with CNN for having him on there show and yet they bleep or reject people who comment here with less profanity, they called this communism you know.

Marriage is a legal institution governed by the agreed laws and mors of a society. When the majority in a democratic society is ready for same sex marriage it will be.

I dont believe the American Society is ready for it.

I am sure the question as asked in a "female beauty pageant" was in appropriate, as surely as a gay male judge in a female beauty pageant.

Joshua D   April 21st, 2009 11:42 pm ET

This country was founded on the principals of freedom, liberty and equality to ALL. Her voice is no different from racist or bigot. This kind of attitude has no place in the republic our fore fathers left for us. I hope those that have been conned by the religious extreme see through the smoke and mirrors, divide and conquer tactics, and get back to the roots of humanity and freedom. Not for myself, but for their own sake.

America is fed up with the hypocrisy.

Kim   April 21st, 2009 11:48 pm ET

I understand that Perez Hilton thinks he does not have to be politically correct but that does not mean that he needs to be rude and disrespectful of this young intellegent woman. He had an agenda to get at with his question and that is what he did. I find it so supprising that everyone is so scared to upset the homosexual community but if you are a Christian then you are fair game for anything. The standards have changed. Those who are kind, respectful, and gracefull in thier speech are now the target and those who use profanity get to be heard. How very sad. I am disapointed in the Miss USA system that they would allow a contistant to be treated like trash. Shame on you Perez, I too will be praying for you.

Frank Lovell   April 22nd, 2009 12:57 am ET

Rick, I believe it was inappropriate to ask the question. But how refreshing that someone still has the integrity to answer the way they believe, and not what others may want to hear. True, she could she have articulated it better. But she expressed herself with pure honesty. And who does Perez Hilton think he is? His comments on your show today protrayed him as nothing more than a pure idiot!. Thank you Miss California for sticking up for what you believe, not what others might want you to say.

Dr. Lott   April 22nd, 2009 1:08 am ET

She should NOT be condemned for speaking what she beleives. Why ask a question of her if you want to be the one to script her ansswer? Just say what YOU want to say and have at it. THIS IS AMERICA!!!!!!! She SAID that her intent was not to offend anyone. So what that some people TOOK offense...People will do that. SOME might take offense if I say that I don't smoke weed. The ONLY PERSON that could be Miss America according to Mr. Hilton's contention that she should represent everyone would have to be a black/white/hispanic/asian/hetorosexual/bisexual/abstinant/beast lover/pedophile/atheist/muslim/CHRISTIAN/budist!! That person does not exist.

What if we all criticized Perez Hilton for SAYING that is a homsexual.

TimB   April 22nd, 2009 5:09 am ET

Perez said that Miss USA should best represent America. Well, Perez also said that 4, only 4 of the 50 United States have given homosexuals the right to be married. So, going by those numbers it would appear that the majority of states agree with Miss California on this one. Who's really the minority here? Obviously, this nation is full of varying viewpoints (apparently, some of which so powerful they can sway the turnout of the Miss USA beauty pageant). If there weren't so many varying views, and all believed as Perez does, would we not be living in a nation where all states allowed gay marriage? But that's not the case is it? I think the point has been made. She not only best represented her state's view on the issue, but of the majority of the nation. If it was ever an issue of representing our country, she does it well.

It was mentioned by Perez and others that she did not answer the question well. It would also appear that they believe her individual views should not take presidence over the collective views of the nation when she is answering questions like that on such a large platform. After reviewing the responses of the other women, would you not also say that their answers were based on their own opinions? I've heard it said that Perez is a gay rights activist, obviously gay rights are a delicate subject with him. One question asked by a judge to one of the candidates dealt with tax money going to failing business to bail them out and whether or not they believe those businesses should be bailed out with the tax payers money. I wonder, if this judge were an activist for or against a nation using tax money to bail out money, and that contestant didn't agree with his/her beliefs AND the contestant's winning the title was on the line, would we be in a similar situation? I ask, at what point was a judge's verdict–a very enraged judge I might add–based more on their own personal beliefs over what the actual and evident (4 states out of 50) beliefs of a nation? Carrie deserves the title. She did what was required and more and I am truly thankful, as an American, to see a person on that platform stand up for her beliefs on the issue. As a fellow Christian, I am especially overjoyed to see her stand up for and confess her scriptural beliefs in front of millions. She's passed this test of faith and for that I am sure God is pleased.
As for Perez, the rude and obscene and hateful comments he made towards Carrie were completely uncalled for. I pray God's spirit is working on him right now. Scripture tells us to bless our enemies, so I also pray God will bless Perez and I hope one day very soon I can say he truly is a brother in Christ.
God Bless you all, and God Bless Carrie.

Just like any public office, it is important not to say anything that can be taken out of context or alienate. She did not handle herself appropriately for the office she sought.

C.J.   April 22nd, 2009 2:14 pm ET

I'm pretty sure her answer did impact the outcome. From other sources that I've read there were at least two, or three, openly gay judges on the panel.

While I happen to think Ms. Prejean opinion is wrong, I do support her right to have that opinion and thing people should not be bothering this young woman over her beliefs. She is entitled to them just as the rest of us are entitled to ours.

Thank you,
C.J.

While everyone has freedom of speech, everyone should also excerise common sense. If you are a Miss USA contestant, you should just wave, smile, and stay tight lipped.

Omar Trevino   April 22nd, 2009 2:15 pm ET

I think miss california gave a good answer, I think if your gonna have a question on gay marriage it shouldn't come from a gay judge it should come froma nuetural judge. Plus isn't miss america supposed to be a litle conservative. I don't know that just me.

Laura   April 22nd, 2009 2:16 pm ET

Well,
I think Miss Arizona was robbed for saying ,in the last question,
how she thought her Dad was her ideal man......... :)
Enough of Miss California, did anyone notice that Miss North Carolina
was worthy of the crown that SHE won !

Preeti Singhal   April 22nd, 2009 2:18 pm ET

I dont think it was her answer. Individual opinions are completely valid but It was her inability to articulate a well phrased politically correct response at the spur of moment. I mean comeon, first she says 'Americans are...' and then 'In my country' .. Isnt she Miss CA .. wassup with My country !! and whats 'Opposite Marriage' !!

Brad Schecter   April 22nd, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Ms. California's remarks are not the problem. The problem is that it's still acceptable in 2009 to have bigotry towards 1 group. Did you hear the cheers and applause when she gave her opinion? That was disturbing.

Jodie Rosenthal   April 22nd, 2009 2:25 pm ET

I agree with Barbara Hill. I hadn't thought of it from that point of view, but she may be right. If Miss California's "political correctness" or lack thereof was indeed the reason she did not win, then shame on us.

Andrea   April 22nd, 2009 2:25 pm ET

Kudos to Ms. California for standing up what she believes in. Just like gays proponents have their right to state their opinion w/o expecting any ramification why should some who oppose should face a black lash. Marriage as stated in the Bible is between a man and a woman, That is not hating on n e one ... if you believe in the Bible this should be your belief you are not hating n e one just not agreeing with a lifestyle choice

Joshua D   April 22nd, 2009 2:27 pm ET

Kathy I'm sure womens rights would have been something your every being would have fought for if you were alive during the women's rights movement. It's funny how you perceive this and partake in helping deny that constitutionally given right and support division and hate. This is the 21st century, enough with the bigotry and oppression already.

Crystal   April 22nd, 2009 2:27 pm ET

I am not understanding what the deal is. Miss California simply stated what she believed. Why should she have to say it the way Perez or any one else wants her to say it? Isn't what this country is about freedom of speech and the right to your opinion. If this is what she was raised to believe then so be it. I applaud her for sticking to what she believes and not compromising that for some crown, title or Perez Hilton. I'm not sure what world Perez or anyone else who puts her down lives on but it can't be the planet Earth.

Joahn Webb   April 22nd, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Unfortunately, Miss California was penalized. I believe the judge that asked the question is openly gay and ultimately gave her a low score. Again, unfortunately, politics has crept into our beauty pageants..

Lauren, NYC   April 22nd, 2009 2:31 pm ET

Perez Hilton is making himself look like a close-minded idiot by not respecting Miss California's personal opinion. He is a hypocrite.

TwiWi   April 22nd, 2009 2:31 pm ET

As I stated in Twitter, the Miss USA Pageant 2009 should be declared null and void. If I were Ms. CA, I would cite the biasness of the judges and the unprofessional commentary coming from Perez Hilton.

I might not agree 100% with Ms. CA conservative views, but I do appreciate her honesty. For that, should not be penalized.

Bruno LoGreco   April 22nd, 2009 2:40 pm ET

I believe she answered the question not based on her own views and choices but rather what she believed society would want to hear. Her response lacked confidence and I do not believe she believes what she said.

As for Hilton – What happened to objective reporting? His strong opinion belongs on FOX.

Allen   April 22nd, 2009 2:42 pm ET

As a Miami Cuban, you surely remember Anita Bryant and her anti-gay crusade in Dade County back in the '70s. Although she was successful in her campaign against the enactment of some pro-gay legislation in Dade, her career tanked soon thereafter. Even the Florida orange producers (whose spokesperson she had been) dropped her.

This isn't just about Perez Hilton. The fact of the matter is that no one – neitherFlorida orange growers nor the Miss USA pageant – want to be associated with bigotry.

Erik   April 22nd, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Rick, I believe Perez Hilton was trying to promote his gay agenda when he asked that question to Ms. California. He was expecting her to say what he wanted to hear but probably got surprised with her answer. As we all know, the gays have been pushing a lot of their agenda a lot in mainstream media like MTV where they start to poison young people's minds. I do not oppose gay rights to civil union but it's going too far when they want to call it as 'marriage'. We just want to save the definition of marriage between a man and a woman for the sake of our children.

antoaneta perlmutter   April 22nd, 2009 2:58 pm ET

I was appalled when I heard Perez Hilton's insulting comments. I saw her interview yesterday on another network and she is very well spoken I was quite impressed by her. She was invited by Donald Trump today for lunch is he going to apologize for Perez Hilton or is this putting a band aid on the "bubu"? Public figures should set an example and not behave like any other ignorant "Joe"! It's harder to be nice than just simply "be". I feel sorry for him not her. Thank you Rick!

Ms. Koffee Bean   April 22nd, 2009 3:11 pm ET

Rick, the key words were " in my country..." . Miss America reps "OUR" country, right?

Jane   April 22nd, 2009 3:11 pm ET

Gay Marriage and Miss America? Why must we always be so politically correct. She gave her honest answer. Why is this even news?

Emily   April 22nd, 2009 3:18 pm ET

God loves the sinner (and we all are sinners), but HATES sin. He hates sin because it harms the self and/or others. Also, sin reflects a rebellion in your heart against God. The gay lifestyle tends to be very imbalanced, lacks stability, and is very shallow. It's not how God intended for us to live. Men go through relationships with each other like KLEENEX. they discard each other for shallow reasons. [yes, heterosexuals commit sins, too (sex before marriage and leaving your spouse for someone else, for example) but the Bible condemns that, too.] The reason they can discard each other so quickly and easily? Because it is a shallow connection & all about sex. Why do you think gay men tend to be so shallow? I will give an example in my next post.

Alex   April 22nd, 2009 3:22 pm ET

I think this issue is being blown way out of preportion. Some people are standing up for LGBT rights, while others are saying that she can have her own opinion. I think Perez asked a question about a current issue, and I personally think that same sex marriage should be legal in all states. I also think that it was asked in the beauty pagent because to be Miss America you have to be beautiful inside and out. The question ened up showing a streak of ignorance, although it was her belief it still showed a streak of ignorace.

Emily   April 22nd, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Here is my example from my above post (see that first):
Re: How God intended it-
A woman's sexuality is like a slow-burning oven while a man's is like a blow torch. So when you have a heterosexual relationship, the man is already in the mood – usually. But he has to connect with a woman on a deeper level throughout the day and in their relationship (emotionally and mentally) in order to make her feel special and safe and unguarded and this slowly increases her desire or sex. Because of this difference, a balance is created and they are able to have a deeper connection with each other rather than one that is based on sex. That's how it's supposed to work, though heterosexuals screw that up as well when they sin.

Joey Simpson   April 22nd, 2009 3:26 pm ET

Poor Poor Perez Hilton. He can sure dish out the words and run his flapper but the moment someone has an opinion that isn't the same as his he ruins it for the poor girl. Kudos to her for standing up for her beliefs and shame on Perez for saying she should have been PC. Being PC is tearing this country up.

Laura   April 22nd, 2009 3:29 pm ET

I stand by what Miss CA had to say even though i do agree with gay marriage and since when do americans really think that perez hiltons opinion ever matters. All he has done is bash people in the end anyways.

Allen   April 22nd, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Hey, she gave an honest answer. Hilton asked for her opinion and she gave it. He didn't ask what she thought people wanted to hear, but what she thought. I thought we lived in a country where people had freedom of expression and freedom of speech, yet this young woman is being punished for exercising those rights. Gays don't like the fact that their rights are diminished, but it appears Mr. Hilton is OK with challenging the rights of those with whom he doesn't agree. Those who live in glasses shouldn't throw stones; or better yet, let those without sin cast the first stone.

Terry L.   April 22nd, 2009 3:31 pm ET

If blondes have more fun, do they know it?

Miss California's gaffe with the gay marriage question was a case of TMI, too much information. She should have stopped while she was ahead, cutting her reply short rather than resorting to evangelism. She still gets the stage and spotlight to voice her personal views, but thankfully her star won't shine as bright nor as long as the reign of the winning Miss USA.

John Melsheimer   April 22nd, 2009 3:34 pm ET

Good for Miss California for speaking her mind and standing up to her convictions. We have become way to politically correct in this nation.

Lonnie   April 22nd, 2009 3:39 pm ET

Enough with this argument between Prez Hilton and Miss Calif. Cease the tabloid journalism Rick....I'm trying to warm up to you by watching because I haven't been a fan and this certainly isn't working.

James Day   April 22nd, 2009 3:40 pm ET

people have to realize when you deny a minority its' rights there comes a point where they just will not take it anymore. The majority should never get to decide for the minority.

Gwen   April 22nd, 2009 3:41 pm ET

She lost because she is as DUMB as a GNAT. It was difficult for her to put three words together that made intellectual sense. If she had listened to the question and actually answered it, the results may have been different. Miss USA should have some intellect and diplomacy.

Charles   April 22nd, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Why dose her option matter. She is as shallow as the completion. (MISS USA Pageant)

And for Perez Hilton. I think that he was just waiting on an opportunity to start something with a high profile person that didn't agree with him.

Aaron Dungy   April 22nd, 2009 3:44 pm ET

I don't condone people saying nasty things about people and I think that if you have something nasty to say that they should at least give a reason why. This is freedom of speech. On the other hand I think that This guy is doing this because the wants to have publicity and we are doing just that. There just like the Obama releasing the Bush dirt, Obama stated that we should leave the decision making up to the Law so with the Man with the nasty mouth we should report him and let the authorities deal with it.

Jeff   April 22nd, 2009 3:45 pm ET

For those so heated up about Perez Hilton's use of the "B" word, maybe they should look of the meaning in the dictionary.Could be a female dog, or could be a lewd woman. If she was not being lewd by parading around in front of who knows how many people, what is lewd?If she is so moral, how does parading around in front of people, ninety percent nude fit in?Personally I do not mind, but let us not be hypocritical.

Kerry   April 22nd, 2009 3:46 pm ET

Our 17 year old daughter is gay and struggling to "come out of the closet" and be accepted in our society. Perez Hilton has just set her struggle (and that of other gays) back 50 years.

j   April 22nd, 2009 3:46 pm ET

I really wish everyone would just stop talking about Perez Hilton and the Miss USA pageant. The Miss USA pageant is nothing but an annual Donald Trump publicity stunt and Perez Hilton is only able to make enough money to feed himself because people talk about whether or not what he says is appropriate.

Every year we have to have hear about some Miss USA controversy whether its photos that surface on in the internet or this, and Perez Hilton only says things that make people discuss whether or not he should be allowed to say it, not whether there is any validity to it.

Next story please.

Heather Hopkins   April 22nd, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Perez is just jealous he doesn't look that good in a bikini

Jesse   April 22nd, 2009 3:50 pm ET

I do believe this impacted the outcome. As the world becomes globalized, the need for individuals to become accepting of those that are different is required. She has to consider her audience and if she wants their vote, she is going to have to share her audience's beliefs.

The traditional midsets that were the foundations of our youth may have served us then, but they will not serve us in the future. Whether it is gay marriage or someone from another country or someone with a different religious belief, as we become globalized each individual must become globalized, ie. accepting of others fundamental rights. If not, we will find strained relationships at home, in our communities, and in business relationships.

Being a native Californian, I am quite disappointed in Miss California and her representing my State on such a basic level with her stance on gay marriage and her educated use of "opposite marriage".

WG   April 22nd, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Rick I believe its every americans right to speak their mind, its your choice to listen. I believe both perez and miss california are in the clear, if you don't want to hear it change the channel. America has become too soft. Sticks and stones

Elle   April 22nd, 2009 3:51 pm ET

I wanted to say this for a while. Yes, she has a right to her opin ion. But, her opinions, based on religion and culture or personal dislike for gays, have NO place in the law or the state. The state is supposed to be neutral and secular.lt should not discriminate against gays on behalf of religionj/culture/personal opinion. Homophobic people–it's not about your beliefs. It's about what is legally right.

Raul   April 22nd, 2009 3:54 pm ET

"Pretty Lady, Strong Opinion", I would say honest opinion, why is it that every body is offended and surprised about it, she never atacked the gay community, she clearly stated, thank god we live in usa and we can choose, although I believe man and woman is better because this is how I was raised, What is wrong with that.

Candice   April 22nd, 2009 3:55 pm ET

I think it's absolutely ridiculous that Perez Hilton went on your show following this and called her a "b"

I am all for gay marriage and was sad to see Prop 8 pass when it did here in CA, but that doesn't mean that people who aren't for gay marriage aren't allowed to have their own opinions and views on it. If I want fairness for gays, that doesn't stop me from wanting fairness for everybody else, too.

Perez wants it to be okay to be gay and marry if he wishes, but he wants this woman's mouth sealed shut because she doesn't agree??? Talk about double standards. Mr. Hilton should be ashamed and should be one of the last people judging someone for thinking differently than himself.

Patrick   April 22nd, 2009 3:56 pm ET

She was asked for her opinion and she gave it. He wanted her to give some vague answer about " states rights " that sounded like some non-answer a politition would give. So when her answer isn't what he wanted to hear, he uses his blog ( A useless form off forum that we could do without ) to slam her with no mercy. Funny how he wants fair treatment for him and his, but if someone dares to disagree with him he'll attack. You didn't do your cause any good with this Mr. Hilton.

Tom Alvin   April 22nd, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Hilton should rethink his intolerance of someone elses opinion. I wonder if he remembers what he said, or thought, when the Dickie Chicks questioned the President on the Irag invasion. This country is built, or should be . on free speech and drawing on different opinions. Let's get civil--I have friends and foes that I disagree with, but he is acting silly.

Todd Smith   April 22nd, 2009 3:59 pm ET

While most of us have found Miss California's comments to lack the inclusive nature that contestants would lend to the national beauty pageant they were competing in, she did have the right to express her feelings about same sex marriage.

Her feelings did not help her win in the end...

Hilton, too, had every right to express his feelings as well; he just needed to tone his dissent down. I.E. the language he used was not acceptable in such a public forum.

Indeed, all of us public figures and bloggers alike need to exercise caution when addressing a public that can interpret anything in any way it desires.

julie   April 22nd, 2009 4:02 pm ET

Perez Hilton is a rude and obnoxious person fr lack of a better word . its a pitty he has the authority to spue whatever he wants yetMiss California cant according tohim. i will not take another second entertaining his rude ways he can count me outof his communty

CyberSys   April 22nd, 2009 4:03 pm ET

Miss California stated in her answer that this country gave a choice! This didn't seem to be heard. Then she gave her own opinion. She seemed to indicate she was pleased that this country gave a choice.
I believe Hilton was rude and certainly unkind to this lovely lady.

durox   April 22nd, 2009 4:06 pm ET

erez hilton is just another misogynic infatuated fake VIP :}.

Nancy from Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 4:06 pm ET

Mr. Hilton had an unfair, loaded question for Miss California. He probably already knew what her position was on the subject. And, obviously, he felt there was only one answer. I felt she was very diplomatic and honest in her answer. He, on the other hand, has shown what type of person he is. I ache for her that she may have lost because of this.

Kay   April 22nd, 2009 4:07 pm ET

Perez demonstrates what tolerance the rest of us can expect if the gay activist agenda succeeds. We are watching the destruction of family values. With the family, so goes our nation.

Sharon   April 22nd, 2009 4:08 pm ET

I am a lesbian and more offended by the comment Perez Hilton made, than by the fact that Carrie Prejean opposes same-sex marriage. Both comments are based in ignorance, but Mr. Hilton's is also based in hate and anger. The movement to gain acceptance as same-sex couples begins with exposing hate, rejecting name-calling, and battling ignorance with truth. Perez did exactly opposite, he choose to join "their" team, and it seems that he likes it there.

Stu   April 22nd, 2009 4:17 pm ET

Rick - Common understand what this was - Perez Hilton was using his question to Miss California as a publicized stunt – he used the pageant to state his view/support of gay marriage.

I really enjoyed his well rehearsed “surprised look - priceless

Greg from California   April 22nd, 2009 4:17 pm ET

Why is it that people who deny gays based on religion have no problem with a superficial beauty contest that objectifies women? I'm scratching my head on that one.

If you have a problem with gays from a Biblical point of view, then you should also have the SAME disapproval of beauty contest with women parading around in scantily clad bathing suits as objects of desire. It's hypocritical of you to condemn one while approving of the other.

Mark   April 22nd, 2009 4:18 pm ET

Why was this question asked of a beauty pageant contestant ? Is Miss California's opinion relevant? Is anyone's opinion news? Maybe we (and CNN news anchors) should ponder these questions.

Oh, and to those citing "majority rule, " you apparently missed the civics lesson in which we were taught about our representative government. It could be argued that the majority of Germans supported or allowed the holocaust.

KimNY   April 22nd, 2009 4:19 pm ET

Hello? Can I just say something here? First, doesn't Perez Hiltons venomous behavior indicate a mental illness? Seriously, aren't these the types of people that ultimately end up in some kind of shooting spree? If I were Miss California, I'd ask for Police Protection from this guy.

Second, exactly what credentials is it that Perez Hilton comes to the table with to be a judge on a Beauty Pageant that consists of the sex he obviously hates? Because his behavior constitutes absolute hate for the female race. Maybe it's why he's gay.

Third, exactly what credentials does Donald Trump come to the table with to Pick Perez Hilton to be a judge? Or isn't this how it works?

Lastly, speaking of credentials, do any of these judges have any kind of formal college education? Because believe me, if they did, their 'emotional ills' would have already been dealt with and resolved, or they would have been able to look beyond these very small issues.

I personally think Donald Trump is one of the most ignorant people in this country. Regardless of how much money he has, he's basically a very ignorant person. This is clearly obvious by the way he talks about Rosie. ANYONE with any kind of emotional security and intelligence isn't threatened by Rosie O'Donnell, nor Miss California for that matter!! Perez Hilton and Donald Trump are obviously very threatened men. Fragile egos, I suppose. Regardless, they don’t belong on National TV. Garbage men have more integrity and savvy than these 2 men have.

Let's wake up people. The issue here is what was Perez Hilton doing being a judge to begin with?? Obviously lacking in class, and education, he belongs with his mate, off the national news screen. He's tainting young minds, and he's very dangerous.

Lastly, for millions of years, there have been families or friends who have had doubts about marriages they have been involved in, even between 2 straight people. For millions of years, people have gotten married anyway, and regardless of what anyone else has thought and against all odds!! Exactly why is it the GAY COMMUNITY needs such absolute approval and attention and SUPPORT in order to continue on with what they believe in? Disgraceful. Its your lives. It's a free country. Do what you want! You don't need our approval, nor our consent!! Nor are we going to bend over backwards to make you feel welcomed. Go on with your lives, and leave us alone. We want what we want; you want what you want. GO GET IT!! Just because Miss California wants to marry a man, instead of a woman, doesn’t make Perez Hilton right in his absolute hatred of this women. All this shows is Perez Hilton actually felt humiliated on National TV because Miss California basically told him to kiss her ***!! Good for her!! We don’t have to approve of Perez Hilton’s sex life and quite frankly, we won’t! The problem is his, and it’s his to solve all by his little anal self. It’s a mental illness he suffers from, not whether or not we approve. Think about this guys. His outrageous behavior is indicative of this. Counseling Mr. Perez, is in your future. The world is ours still. We don;'t scream, hollar, and send hateful epitaphs over the internet, nor send them to people who didn't APPROVE, NOR SUPPORT our choice in marriage. Why should you be any different? Maybe an underlying mental issue, huh? Maybe all the gay community have underlying mental issues, and it's why they are all still screaming and throwing temper tantrums. Grow up guys. It's a free country. Do what you want!
You don't need the support of the world here to have sex! Go for it with whatever and whoever you want!! OMG

Sprint Hater   April 22nd, 2009 4:21 pm ET

Silly little girl

Perez Hilton was way out of line condeming her for opinion. She was honestly representing her religious convictions. We all still have free speech and religion don't we? He sure used his right to free speech in giving his opinion that not everyone agrees on..

Wei Mon   April 22nd, 2009 6:08 pm ET

It's just that she is as narrow-minded as the people who have raised her.

I think Perez Hilton is a poor rep for gay community the way he acts all the time. He is nothing but a play ground bully & a bigot..

Illinoisgirl   April 22nd, 2009 11:09 pm ET

Interestingly enough On Twitter the night of the pagent, I think that Perez comments were enough to say what cost this girl the pagent look at the timelines.... She is neither articulate nor intelligent, however she is very pretty. Unfortunately for her, the pagent is about an all round girl.. she is not it.. she is entitled to her own opinion, as is everyone in America, it may not be popular but it is hers and she has a right to it.. The question never should have been asked to begin with.. that was poor judgement on the pagent committee, let alone having Perez ask it! Here are the Twitter Posts...and the Website
http://twitter.com/perezhilton

Has my question and answer from Miss USA made it to YouTube yet??? I need to post it on the site ASAP!!!
8:52 PM Apr 19th from web
Never before had a contestant been booed before at Miss USA. She deserved the boos!!!!!
8:19 PM Apr 19th from mobile web
My question and her answer is THE YouTube moment of the show! Ha.
8:13 PM Apr 19th from mobile web
She lost the crown because of how she answered the question!
8:12 PM Apr 19th from mobile web
P.S. I can't belive that girl made it to first runner-up! If she had won, I would have run up onstage and snatched that tiara off her head!!
8:11 PM Apr 19th from mobile web
Did you agree with who the judges chose for the new Miss USA?
7:59 PM Apr 19th from mobile web
Deciding between the winner and first runner-up was sooooo hard for me!!!
7:52 PM Apr 19th from mobile web
And that girl DID NOT answer my question well!!!!
7:43 PM Apr 19th from mobile web
Did you like my question? I thought it was the BEST of all asked!
7:43 PM Apr 19th from mobile web

Interesting his opinion on the subject.. This was CLEARLY a publicity stunt for Perez!!!!

LOVE Your show!!! and I follow you on Twitter!!!

Richard Wilson   April 23rd, 2009 6:51 am ET

Whatever happened to the "Golden Rule" ? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The comment Ms. California made is exactly why that precious little boy who was taunted for being gay, hung himself. He is not the only one either, there is too little thought given to how the media is assisting "Hatemongers" spread their poison. Also, why don't you ever highlight the facts about homosexuality and the Bible? We always hear the biblical interpretations of those against homosexual marriage, what about our interpretation. David and Jonathan, for example clearly had a sexual relationship in the Book of Samuel. More importantly in the same chapter Mathew, 19:10-12 Jesus clearly touched on homosexuality referring to us a eunichs. Note the word "let the receive it was written after Jesus clearly expressed to his disciples that homosexuals were so born in our mothers womb. If CNN is interested in keeping them honest share both interpretations, so that the ignorant will not continue to be ignorant,

Richard Wilson   April 23rd, 2009 7:17 am ET

Oh ye heterosexuals of little faith!

The heterosexual community is seeming more and more like the Anti-Christ .....trying to treat us like they did the slave....rape us of our access to God.....There blatant stinking thinking, is destroying this country. They are so drunk in their blind faith that they do not see that they are deciding for God, whether God should bless our marriage.....Well news flash,.......that is what I call an abomination. It is "by the power of the holy spirit" that their metro sexual preacher on his third wife himself pronounces the couple man and wife......Think about the DISRESPECT that THEY ARE DEMONSTRATING TO GOD. This is the same ill advised rhetoric that the KKK supports,, THAT DUMB MENTALITY THAT ON ONE HAND does not like blacks or Jews......and yet Jesus was a Black and a Jew.

The so called leader of the "free world" need to catch up with the science, ......God created a third sex, the Eunich and yes he is creator of all that is see and unseen!

coony 2   April 23rd, 2009 9:54 am ET

Miss California should have not hasitated and said that gay is wrong, one man one women! Miss California, you did good,

DENG, NGONG L.   April 23rd, 2009 11:59 am ET

Rick, Iam tired of gays comments or rights like the one Perez Hilton asked Miss California. According to me, I think all gays in America should be moved to one state where they can lived by their rights.

Rachel   April 23rd, 2009 1:00 pm ET

Perez Hilton gives us one more illustration that gays are the most bigoted, intolerant haters in America. There is no room for diversity in Hilton's heterophobic world.

homer J   April 23rd, 2009 3:05 pm ET

I applaud the lady for honesty over correctness. I'm a gay marriage supporter, but I'm also a free speech supporter. Leave the poor lady alone she said what was true for her, not trying to convert anyone

Kimberly Clark   April 23rd, 2009 3:17 pm ET

She shouldn't have been surprised by the question. They were discussing current political issues and gay marriage is a huge issue. She blew the question my stammering, using incorrect English, and saying "I my country" which sounded elitist and supremacist and offended a lot of people. How hard would it have been to say "I agree with President Obama that marriage should be between a man and a woman but I'm happy to live in a country that has a political system in place where these issues can be decided democratically." I'm sure most of the other girls would have been more poised and articulate. She's from California, it's not a foreign issue to her. She wasn't prepared . . . should have had a response in her back pocket. I like the winner. She looks and acts more like a real person. Less plastic and less "enhanced".

Jodi from Murfreesboro TN   April 23rd, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Being a lesbian myself, I believe that Miss California's loss proves that America has FINALLY begun to open their minds about LGBT equal rights. Ten years ago, an answer like hers would have won her the crown. The fact that "Bubba" from Alabama doesn't agree with her radical, homophobic, Christian response proves that the gay community has come a LONG way & is finally being heard.

adboshi   April 23rd, 2009 3:58 pm ET

Good for her to have an opinion that she's not afraid to share just because it's not politically correct.

Isabelle from Washington State   April 23rd, 2009 4:48 pm ET

She may be pretty on the outside, but she is ugly on the inside.

Christina Prejean   April 23rd, 2009 11:35 pm ET

Thanks, Rick. You're absolutely right. My sister was asked a question and she asnwered it, to the best of her ability. She's a very strong woman and will stand by her beliefs.

Omar T   April 24th, 2009 12:55 am ET

I think Miss California gave a solid answer, she spoke her mind and i dont think what she said was offensive, i think that if your gonna have a question on a sensitive topic like gay marriage coming from a judge, i dont think the judge should be gay because if you dont answer exactly how he wants because your a little more conservative then thats not fair the judge should be neutral. Plus isnt miss America supposed to be a little conservative.

Gwen   April 24th, 2009 4:34 am ET

To bad Miss California did not listen to the question, she did not answer what she was asked, she just spouted out her generalized opinions on the subject. The exact question, “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalise same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?”

If Miss California's answer or more correctly non answer cost her the title, it was because she seems to have the intellect of a gnat. She is however very impressed with herself. Obviously the judges were not. Title recipients must be intelligent and diplomatic, she failed miserably at both requirements!

I laughed while listening to her as she fumbled as badly as the teenage contestant did with her geography question last year. This response will be on You Tube forever.

Listening to Miss California as she replied, "We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised." Apparently she does not know the words heterosexual or homosexual.
Her response was completely incoherent once she got something other than a softball question. Her rambling answer was truly insulting to the educational system that passed her from one grade to another. She is not "mensa" material.

tony   April 24th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

You have every right to have an honest openion and to answer a question honestly without being flayed for expressing it .There is a lack of good maners in America when one is thus treated .Honest disagreement respectfully stated would be more correct. So fear of loss ,or sensure for your honest fealings should silience free speach.

curt b.   April 24th, 2009 4:25 pm ET

Rick.
On the latest world issues, there is something that most people dont want to realize... Americans as a whole have lost their way, We expect the world to be the same and feel the same on fundamental issue's that mean something to us.. her's a hint to the leaders of this country......
Start by dealing with the coruption in our own country, poloticians , judges, bankers , and ceo's that live above the laws and created a landmark recession due to there own greed. hold them accountable for there actions, regardless of who they are or how much money they have... our newest president has an almost impossible task to perform, Fix the problems that the previous presidents created from there own greed....
Here's an example: Former president bush, while he was in office, the oil crisis went thru the roof, prices sky rocketed and qaulity declined.. here's the clincher, while he blamed the foriegn oil suppliers for the cost's, his whole family gained hundreds of millions, why you ask? they are in oil... go figure... it boils down to simple math.. he made laws that would suppliment his income after he was out of office... I didnt vote for pres. Obama, but he has made significant moves towards the eqauilification of this country.. kudos to him, and may he continue to bring us back from the edge of the abyss of the political debaucle we now face..
QUESTION: why not try making politics a voluntary job, instead of showering these politicians with diplomatic ammunity try holding them accountable for the things they do, not just our's , but all of them, diplomats from around the world are here, but , not bound by our laws. if we go to their country's we are bound by there laws, so why is it that any politicians that commit a crime have protection from the laws that the rest of us are being forced to live by.????

curt b.   April 24th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

Support our troops.... BRING THEM HOME...
If the problems follow them here then bite it's head off. But our supposed leaders should not be trying to change the belief structure of other nations, it's not our place.
The issue's with north korea, if you think about it, we started it.....
Dont believe me ? answer this then, Who created the first atomic weapon???? I can say without question it wasn't the n.koreans.
we have been supporting the pakistani's for decades, suppling them with weapons, money , and intelligence ( if you'd call it that ). now they have nuclear weapons and are about to hand them over to the terrorist's that we've been helping them fight. seem senseless to anybody else ??? it should.
instead of handing out $700 billion to these car company's, find out what they did with the money they had , is it worth it? maybe they should stop paying people $50.00 plus an hour to sit on their butt's.
The rest of us shouldn't have to pay their salary's because they are lazy. what is my 6 yr old daughter going to have to look forward to?? now that she's what $65 thousand dollars in dept, is the government going to bail her out ?? why not, ??? I think our future is worth bailing out , not these pathetic greedy ceo's and auto makers who have been ripping the rest of us off for years. The government is no different, They dont spend $600.00 for a toilet seat . If they are, they need to go to wal-mart , It's alot cheaper.
I would love to run for office, these problems would not even exist, I am an american, I love my country, but I think we need to get rid of the bush's, and the clinton's , of this country and get back to the fundamentals of what make this country so great, freedom, liberty , the pursuit of happiness, all the things that our government is trying to take from us. Next thing you know the government wil be telling us who we can talk to or marry, I dont support same sex marriage, it's just wrong. I'm no holy roller either, If you look back it says the bible was written by murderers and thieves, that were supposed to have been led by the will of god, you know , divine influence. who is influencing them now? did god say it's o.k. to sodimise young boys? or is religion just another way for people to blame their sickness on somebody else??? GOD forbid they take resposibility for the actions they do.

curt b.   April 24th, 2009 6:02 pm ET

If you follow the course of nature , We are the only species on the planet to endorse same sex unions, all other's have what could be declared a "no fly zone". if same sex unions were what nature intended, this planet would be void of life .... Can a man produce a child? I think not , Not without a woman, If people want to have gay relations, they should be allowed to only for the purpose of eqaulity, but nature has a way of solving it's own problems, H.I.V. may be a hint to the world that being gay is next to being responsible for deadly epodemics that are affecting the rest of the population. You cant have an accident and recieve a blood transfusion because the male donor , had a sexual partner that was of the same sex. Nature took it's course on the issue , it started a disease that will kill you for it.. It's not about god or the right to choose , It's about right or wrong, and man seems to think they're right no matter what the cost...I think all the same sex lifestyle supporters should move to their own little state or island somewhere and see what nature has to say about it.. they'll complain then because nobody wants to help with the med bills, or nobody tried to help.......
Truth be told , we do try to help them, but the rest of us should not have to pay for what they want. it's just plain down mental sickness.
Another blogger put it pretty well i think, whats next ,? pedifile rights ? because somebody else wants to have sexual encounters with children, should they have that right?? let them try it with my daughter,
and I will show freedom of expression....

curt b.   April 24th, 2009 6:08 pm ET

I dont think they should let a question about sexuality be part of the line of questioning, especially from a gay man , who obviously hates the female gender....
I'm straight, and the site of two men kissing is enough to make me want to vomit, let them have there own hospitals and doctors , let them have their own blood banks and donor sites....
The rest of us should not allow them to threaten our lives because they have a mental illness.... Would you treat an hiv patient without gloves on or contact bodily fluids from one of the gay patients , then go home and infect your wife or your children with a deadly virus????
I think not....

curt b.   April 24th, 2009 6:13 pm ET

she has a right to own opinion, and I think she was right on target, sorry mr. gay man ..... you wouldnt know what to do with a body like that anyway.

I am the proud child of a same sex couple and I do believe that unfortuately having integrity can affect the outcome of a contest. I can only say THANK YOU for standing up for what you know in your heart to be good and pure. No matter what I see the love my parents have for eachother so why shouldn't they be "married"? Oh yeah because the bible says. FINE lets call it something else but have the same rituals and the same rights as every other american in the USA.

Sam   April 24th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

no rights such as married people have, for the same sex living together, marrage is between ONE MAN ONE WOMEN, same sex living together should not be allowed to raise a child, see what it did for you, you do not realize that it is wrong.

mw-CA   April 25th, 2009 2:54 pm ET

What is happening to "freedom of speech"? A beauty pageant should not be so political, that a contestant is selected purley on politics.
Perhaps Ms. California wasn't really qualified; however, for Perez Hilton to attack this female, based on same sex marriage, was totally out of control and he crossed the line! If this bill is to be passed in all states, it will be passed, but not at the expense of "jamming down throats of Americans who don't support it"!

Steven Wolfe   April 25th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

Rick:

I take my hat off to Carrie Prejean, Miss California 2009...
This woman is very strong and very well spoken.

Perez Hilton damn well should have known better than to ask such a question to make this his own personal forum to promote HIS views.
Miss USA is a pagent about beauty & grace, not about a specific judges personal views.

I myself believe that marriage should be between a man & a woman & her comments should be respected, not be condemmed. I do believe that her answer truly shows the true beauty & grace of a Miss USA contestant...

What we fail to realize is that there is "GOD's WILL" and "Free Will" that has the world the way it is. Yes, GOD loves everyone but...he created two sexes for a reason. I feel the GAY world is trying to impose THEIR WILL on everyone else. I don't hate or dislike anyone but I always ask the LORDs WILL to guide me.

Mike Chaput   April 27th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

That question should have not even been allowed, especially from that loser Perez Hilton, who is obviously the biased one here and the one who has displayed his narrowmindedness to the country.

Joan   April 27th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

One way to discover this answer would be to review the scores of each contestant before the questions were asked.

Edwin Hoffman   April 27th, 2009 8:13 pm ET

I do not agree with her opinion, but I would defend her right to make it with my life.
She has the right to make any comment, and long as she is prepared to be criticized in return, by other people who also have that right.

Isabelle from Washington State-HOW IS SHE ULGY ON THE INSIDE?? is it because she gave her honest opinion on the subject? You may need to crawl back under that rock babe.

Hello Rick,

America has changed so much!!!! No more morals, values, standards, etc. To each their own, but leave me alone. Freedom of speech, don't get mad at me then. I was raised the old fashion way and have been married to the same man, come June 1, this year for 40 years and very proud of doing so. My America, as I know it, has changed and I really can't say for the Good! It is sad to me. I fear the world will only get worse as time goes on.
Thanks for letting me comment.

Javier Sanchez   April 28th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

Rick~ Just started following u on Twitter (Follow me "JavierESanchez") But had a question for you. What is your stance on same-sex marriage?

Alfonso   April 28th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

What Channel is this Miss USA pageant on now? In the days of my youth, 1970's, everyone watched it on one of the three networks.

It has so fallen off the map! But ths is the most anyone has talked about anything related to the pageant in decades.

I bet the people who put this meat show on are loving the free PR.

HEY Rick: Another reminder Bill O'rielly with the Fox News has reached over 100 Months as number one...and still climbing...I know youre sooo Jealous that you stike out against him every chance you can!!!! Just remember FOX,FOX,FOX Channel..That is the channnel that believes in honesty, and report news as it happens, not like Rick Sanchez who makes the news to suit his opinion...I noticed ,along with many other people, If you don't like someone you use any means to attack and, forget honesty. If you don't know anything bad about that person, Make up something bad. Example, Remember Joe the Plumber...You had a lot to say about that person..all he did was ask a question.....remember????!!!!

Shana Garrett   April 30th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Ms. Prejean lost for a variety of reasons. Saying that she supports limiting civil rights to groups that she personally approves was the icing on her "fail" cake.

FGV   April 30th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

My prayer for Carrie is that she be blessed with a gay child one day to challenge her belief system and come to know the truth of how the bible was translated . Mans translation has opressed gay people throughout the ages. " and the truth shall set you free"

j.morey   April 30th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

Seems to me that she is just upset that she didn't get what she wanted and is having a fit and just can't stop. All she is doing is making her self look like a closed minded bimbo and if she keeps it up she's never going to be a miss ANYONE

Patrick Fulton   April 30th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Hello Rick, Us shold ban same sex marriage period. plus How do we know that same sex couples won't turn there kids intothe same way as there parents.

Rob   April 30th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

I think you might have a different opinion is Ms Dumb^^^ had said she believes in her country believing in no mexicans? no blacks? why is it suddenly a positive thing to admit hatred when it comes to gayness?

John L   April 30th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

Rick you are the last person that should talk. You were talking about her articulation and YOU said "articulateness"? Umm... you need english lessons. You and Kira are the biggest idiots and make liberals and CNN look horrible! I am ashamed that CNN has such idiots working there!

Charles   April 30th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

Why is our first admenment being pounded on. She said what she believed. Maybe we can go back to the time when the answer was the same for all contestants "WORLD PIECE".

Scott   April 30th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

Way to go Miss California, stick to your beliefs and morals.
I agree with you 100% Will you marry me, lol

Nikki817   April 30th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

Heterosexuals have destroyed any "sacredness" about marriage. It is now just a legal union and nothing more.

Kenton   April 30th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

Hi there,
Well, I live in Canada where we've passed same-sex marriage. Just to let you all know, there have been no thunderbolts crashing down from heaven to kill us all, nor is anyone growing three heads. In fact, I'm pretty sure God is pleased with our love, tolerance and acceptance.
If little miss California 'really' wants to read the Bible, then she shouldn't 'edit out' what she likes and/or dislikes. People who want to quote the Bible must realize that it was written thousands of years ago by MAN and there are several terrible and violent laws in the Bible. Women and children were considered property and could be killed if they didn't 'obey'. If you want to live by the Bible, you must live by ALL it's teachings.
When will we learn that organized and closed minded religion has polluted the planet, and may quite possiblty be our undoing if we don't adapt and change.
Can't we all just get along?

Stev   April 30th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

I must point out how telling I find it that Ms Britto on your show in defense of Miss CA's answer downplayed her as being just a beauty contestant. she doesn't have to be smart or well spoken, she's pretty.... great time to play that card! Also most of the comments on this blog in support of Ms Prejean's comments about right's in HER country are poorly written, misspelled, & grammatically incorrect, ie: Charles with "WORLD PIECE"???? I guess we know what side of the argument intelligence comes down on.

Jake   April 30th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Oh Curtis!
You are misinformed, very gravely I might add.
90% of HIV is in the straight population and mostly in Africa, India and now China.
You're a sad and hateful person. In my experience, anyone writing such hateful comments is a massive closet case. You probably were in a bathhouse last night.
Hatred is toxic my friend.

Emma   April 30th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

Rick, everyone is entitled to their opinion about this subject matter and Miss California answered the question with eloquence, intelligence, conviction and class. The one who should be chastised for his behavior is Mr. Perez. Instead of accepting the young woman's point of view, he elected to punish her by rigging the contest against her favor. At this point it doesn't matter because Miss California will be rewarded for her fortitude in the long run and Mr. Perez will be forgotten.

laurie   May 1st, 2009 12:21 am ET

in the bible god didnt give adam steve he gave him EVE. and he said that it was good. and thats how it should be.

Casey Moore   May 1st, 2009 12:24 pm ET

When we throw away the sanctity of male/female marriage, we in essence throw away the Biblical values our nation was founded upon. And if we do that, we might as well open our prison doors and release the thieves, rapists, murderers, child molesters and others who also ignored biblical principals. The slippery slope thing applies here, where does it end?

We have been pushing God out of our society for decades now and our society has suffered because of it. (Enron, Madoff hint hint).

We have ignored God way, its not working, lets try Gods way and see what happens.

John   May 2nd, 2009 10:57 am ET

I don’t think she lost for speaking her beliefs but its pathetic how’s she has been attacked and no feminist groups have stood up for her. I guess they pick and choose which women they defend.

John   May 4th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

She took a chance and she spoke her opinion, that she was asked for and she said something that upset the Politically Correct individuals. I admire her honesty and she probably knew she would loose if she spoke her opinion. I like people with guts who stand up for what they believe and not follow a/or/the crowd. This America not a Democracy but a Republic and not just a Republic... a Constitutional-Republic where checks and balances are there to protect the right to religion, free speech, and personal property.

budy   May 5th, 2009 9:51 am ET

If i were you i would buy stocks of CSIQ while they are still under 10 $ make a big profit there is time but its running out!

John Taylor   September 15th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

I suspect she indeed lost the position due to her honesty in her answer. Seems to me that if your beliefs do not support the new "gay rights" movement, then you are automatically wrong. Funny thing is, no matter how vocal that movement is, it is still by far in the minority, yet the media seems to be hell bent on promoting it for some strange reason. Is that because the vast majority of the media moguls just happen to be gay themselves? Hmmmmmmm .... one wonders .......

Dan   September 15th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

I'm sure she lost her position because of her honesty...I have nothing against gay people, but this type of thing certainly doesn't heip their cause..In this country we, all people , have a right to openion....even if its about their religion...Its a sad day when you lose because you have no right to have a different openion!!!...And probably like Rick Sanchez, most media moguls are gay!!!

Joe F. Cardenas,B.S.C.   September 15th, 2009 7:29 pm ET

John Taylor:
I agree with you 100%
It is time to start voicing views with : higher family values base on good common sense , good ethic , and mutual respect to one another.
In other words be civilized.
I believe that is what the ancient golden rule is all about!
This beautiful girl lost nothing but a title and instead gained so much by voicing her honest opinion about what a family (the nucleus of society) really is.
Carrie Prejean is the winner in my book of knowledge!
The others ...don't waist your time with them. They are using guerrilla marketing to promote their names and their agendas using the uncivilized manners to create attention!

Peace!
