How did President Obama handle reporters during his press conference?
How did President Obama handle reporters during his press conference?

One reporter asked President Obama how much White House conversation is about race. Another asked him about "communist" China, and how they view the strength of the U.S. dollar.

How do you think the President fielded reporters' questions during the primetime news conference?

Watch this clip with Rick and his guest A.B. Stoddard from The Hill.

Politicians Are Paid to Oppose Protectionism

President Obama says he wants to avoid protectionism, which means he doesn't want to protect the higher paying jobs of American workers. He does not explain how $20/hr. American labor can compete with less than #2/hr. foreign labor in global trading with countries like China. Protectionism may be the only way to cure our economic crisis and regain prosperity for our workers.

Abby   March 25th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Instead of Republicans wishing and hoping Obama fails, which, by the way, translates into our country fails, why don't they stop resisting and just give him plenty of rope. By doing it his way, there will be no doubt, fail or succeed, who to point the finger at .

Christina   March 25th, 2009 11:28 pm ET

I thought he did a decent job, speaking very carefully. Criticism of Obama is insane though. He's been in office for only 2 months, have ppl forgotten that he human not Superman? Although I don't agree with everything he says, he is an intelligent, thoughtful leader. Maybe in today's world with ppl so used to instant gratification i.e. Twitter, text, IM, E-mail etc, we have forgotten that long term success takes time and hard work.

What’s Goin’ On in America? As a black man in America, I look around and am in awe of what it is that people that came before me endured and have accomplished under all types of unfavorable conditions! As a people we have to a great extent over-come and out-lasted slavery, Jim Crow and state-imposed segregation. We now have the opportunities to be educated, gainfully employed, and pretty much live, work & do whatever it is that our hearts desire. In the 1970’s & ‘80’s, Marvin Gaye had us ALL believing that “Black” was the thing to be; however, the 1990’s was an era when very few people identified as being “Black”; but instead were “mixed” with something else and usually chose to identify with that something else as opposed to being “Black”. When we, as Black people, venture outside of the country to Europe, Asia, Africa – including the Middle East, they seem to LOVE us!! Here in 21st century America, I’m wondering what in the world is wrong with being “Black”? When politicians who appear to be black are asked about their race, often is the case they will side-step the question completely, or provide some little bull-shit answer that affords them the opportunity to gloss right over what is being asked of them, much the same way the President did on Tuesday night. Again, I ask, “What’s wrong with being “Black” ? Is it something to be afraid of ? To be ashamed of or embarrassed by ? Granted, there are a few bad apples in the bunch, but could that not be said of other racial/ethic groups as well? I DO love me some President Obama – don’t get me wrong….and to an extent I can understand why and/or how it is that he may not identify with being “Black” – having a bit of insight into his familial history; however, he DID, for the most part, grow up in America, and I'm certain that he had some of the same, if not more difficult struggles that other young black men faced and before he became a senator of even President, when one looked at him, what was it that they saw ?! Like it or not; approve of it or not, people saw a Black man…PERIOD. So can someone PLEASE tell me….what is wrong with being Black?!

Darci   March 26th, 2009 9:25 am ET

Oh, the irony! Rick, today you pointed out your perceived cynicism in a Fox news reporters question to President Obama, where he mentions China's communist leadership...
Yet at the same time you yourself were trying to mask a way to bash Fox News under the pretense of a discussion on President Obamas press conference.
Hilarious! If indeed duplicity was being used by Fox, they have learned from the best... CNN. Too bad.

How much could actually be done if hidden agendas weren't so un hidden?...let's fix some messes and work with Obama for the sake of country and the world.

Comment for Billy – I agree with the most part of what you say and there is nothing wrong with being black. Blacks have been in the same schools with everyone else for the past...what 40 years? Yes there were times when blacks were discriminated against but I don't believe that has been happening for a very long time. Blacks and other minorities have had benefits that whites have not been entitled to. – example – my aunt went back to college at age 30, she was married, two children and a home to look after. She attended college at night and had to get student loans to accomplish this(she is still paying off those loans). Her black friend also attended the same college. The government not only paid for her education but paid her to go. I do however think it's time for blacks to stop screaming about slavery. Jews don't do that and they have be persecuted for 2000 years.

RJ   March 26th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

Comment for r4444b, I agree with most of what your saying to but Jews arent the only ones who have been discriminated, every walk of life, race, religion have been treated wrongly. For example, the Irish were the original slaves of this country, they got treated just as badly as any other group and no one dares to stick up for them. As far as the Jews, if you read your history books you`ll find that in most cases the Jews were ran out due to the economic domination they incurred from their vast migration all over the world. Does that give the right to exterminate them , absolutely not!

Les Hazelton   March 26th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

Rick,

I appreciate your efforts to inform the American people..

I think it would be valuable for the American people to know the impact of the the national debt. I know there are huge sums of money paid as interest on that debt each year.

We should know how much it is. And, how much is going to which foreign governments each year. If you can get the data, it would be great to see it posted on your web site. Please try to make this information available. We need to know what the deficit/debt is doing to our country!

RJ   March 26th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

To Rockman, you need to wake up, we were heading in this direction long before Obama got into office. You really want place the blame, place it on Ronald Reagan, he`s the one who got the ball rolling on deregulation and the breaking of our Unions, not Obama!

jon   March 26th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Rick, why don't you report to all of us about the bilkner group and who owns the fedral reserve ? we should all know more about this Elite Group of people..

hitler also wanted a one world goverment, look what that led too..

Carrie   March 26th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Rick, I am sick and tired of you making comments about the Republican Party, such as the volcano eruption in Alaska and your remark about Gov. Jindal saying what he did about the eruptions; also since you blame the U.S. for sending weapons to Mexico, why doesn't the Mexican government give us the serial numbers of the weapons so their origin can be tracked.

Robert Desbiens   March 26th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

A magician wrks itts magic through misdirection. I feel that corrporations used this to layoff thousands of workers that they couldnt have done any other way! Really good people were ejected.
Low seniority workers were kept, while high time people were sent packing. My company didn/t just layoff. They invented reasons to ffire them, or tricked them into sayingg they had quit so thy could hurt them some more.

GARY SAKAY   March 26th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

Deborah   March 26th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Some people are never satisfied and can never be. People are actually complaining that President Obama comes out and talks to everyone and gives people a chance to ask him questions and have input into the problem solving. They say he has a big ego and craves attention or has some other subversive reason for being so available to Americans. I want to thank him. All George Bush did was keep everything a secret and act as if nothing was our business.
We need more regulation of these big conglomerate agencies that can take the world economy with them. People just don't seem to understand that deregulation got us here.

Kahoneez   March 27th, 2009 4:24 am ET

It's unfortunate viewers are subjected to CNN'S constant gimmicks , that result in less NEWS and more sensationalism .
Rick how is reading opinions on air from twitter and elsewhere , considered NEWS ? Why are " discussions " considered NEWS ? And why do you repeat the same 1,2 stories all day long , because after a couple days of Bonus stories non-stop I think WE GET IT and especially when that's a drop in bucket , compared to the BILLIONS they got .
WHY has CNN stopped reporting on the attack on GAZA( for WEEKS) and currently they have admitted , Israeli soldiers have murdered Palestinian civilians , yet Blitzer protects Israel by not reporting the truth .

Mr. Britt   March 27th, 2009 10:40 am ET

DigitalBilly–calm down, u have issues..

Mike   March 27th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

Rick, I know this will hit a nerve but, WGAS. Today you mentioned that your parents "don't speak a lick of English". That is exactly the point that most American Citizens are trying to make when say immigrants don't want to be American citizens, but just to take advantage of our generosity. The majority of the immigrants aren't interested in becoming an American citizen but rather being a Cuban, Mexican, German, Chinese,(insert any racial group here) citizen living in the U.S.. Immigrants now just want to set up their own little piece of the Motherland, ie. LA, Miami, San Francisco., where English is a foreign language.
Upon research, I have found that your parents came to the U.S. 50 years ago. Perhaps it is too late for them now to learn the language, but what kept them from trying upon arrival? My guess is that they had no real sense of allegence to the country which granted them a place to live freely.
Rick, if you are still reading, then please put aside your racial prejudices and join the millions of American citizens and denounce the governmental condoning of illegal immigration.
Conservatively, there are 7 million illegal immigrants employed in this country. Add that number to at least 8 million guest workers and you can see why the American citizen is angry and the unemployment rate is in double digits.

Dolores E. White   March 28th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

I believe the President answered the questions at the conference as always. Thoughtfully, truthfully and intelligently. I believe he truly has the best interest of the country at heart. This man is truly a God send.

I think you are OK too. Rick.

CLAIRMORE HICKS JR.   March 29th, 2009 9:30 pm ET

While watching CNN's State of the Union over the past few weeks, it's become quite apparent that the show's moderator, John King, is pointedly biased and slanted toward the Republican Party. During his supposed interview with former VP Cheney, all he did was nod in agreement with everything that came out of his mouth. At no point did he press Mr. Cheney or challenge him on any of his comments.

While interviewing General Petraeus and Ambassador Holbrook, concerning President Obama and some of his comments during the 2008 Campaign, John King continued to attempt to evoke negative comments from his guesses about President Obama. Here is an example:

He stated that, "Why can't President Obama just admit that he was wrong concerning the Surge in Iraq?.....Neither Bush or Cheney has taken any responsibility about anything that they perpetuated, to include selling numerous lies for the Iraq War.

Mr. King's only aim is seemingly to help further advance the failed policies of the Bush Administration, along with providing a venue for Republicans to push their negative agendas......case in point, allowing Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to have the last word on his show.

Janeska   March 31st, 2009 4:32 pm ET

I find that many European type reporters are 'negatively biased'. By that I mean, they see the glass half empty, instead of half full. So, the moderate negative reporters, ask questions with a slight slant towards making issues they address to The President look and sound negative. The more overt negative reporters automatically ask extreme negative questions, attempting to make the The President (look bad on purpose) and to hopefully make the public 'buy-in' to their own negative, prejudiced, and paranoid viewpoints.

Reporters from the past (actual true journalists) knew how to ask objective questions without putting their own petty biases into the mix. Unfortunately, in current times, we have a mass journalistic disease called 'moronism', among many European and European thinking journalists.

James Sloan   March 31st, 2009 10:34 pm ET

Rick, how do you feel about taking on a section of the Department Of Defense. AAFES, Army & Air Force Exchange Service to be exact. I tried giving this story to Bryant Ross of ABC News, but I think he got scared, so I never heard anything from him. My name is James Sloan, 254-867-8406, it's time to expose the terror, fear and intimidation that's management is doing to the employees working at this distribution center here in Waco, Texas. So, Rick send me a email and let me know if you are interested in being the first to hear about dictatorship at this government ran facility. I would ask for whistle blower protection program, that want do any good because they fired me already, for asking a question. Rick, what has happen to me is just a tip of what has been going on at this center for years.

Emma   April 1st, 2009 1:39 am ET

Rick, I'm a 54 year old Mexican/American woman who is tired of the black and white issue. Doesn't the rest of the population count or are they the only two ethic groups that count in this country? The reasons Black Americans are always in an uproar about every little thing is because of people like Art Sharpton who continue to feed the fire of racism by twisting the truth into lies and confusing the issues at hand. Who speaks for the Latin Americans, Asian Americans and so on and so forth? You don't see them using their ethic backgrounds as an excuse to incite hatred and confusion. They go about their business and try to get along with everyone. Why can't Americans treat each other all as one color and unite together to help one another in these trying times? As far as I'm concerned every citizen of this country should be taking whatever employment is available to make ends meet and STOP taking government aide as a cop out. I know this is lengthy but I needed to get this off my chest, hope you understand.

DEFINE RACE: a socio-historical concept; a de-centered complex of meanings transformed by political and economic struggle. Moreover, race has no genetic basis. It has no more of a genetic base than, for example, my having blonde hair and my sister having brown hair. So, with that said, seeing how socio-historical political and economic struggle across the world is vastly thought to be the biggest problem the world faces today, shouldn’t Obama’s biggest concern be just this?

I turned over to CNN and Rick was the host. Rick is the most egotistical and senseless commentator I've come across! He asks guest where is proof that they will take away guns. Guest states Eric Holder stated yesterday that they wouldn't let the 2nd Amendment get in the way - Rick - wait – wait - Eric Holder said in (can't remember date but some time ago) we'll not take away guns! Boy - if he said it then then he didn't mean what he said yesterday. Oh, President Obama says no lobbyist in his cabinet - Oops - didn't really mean it. We could go on and on. Rick, don't worry about Glenn and Sean - nobody that believes in freedom would change to watch your program!! Adios

Ada Bezos Castilla   September 2nd, 2009 4:16 pm ET

....and more, I think the comment of your co-anchor about the great number of american firms awating to make profits with Cuba should have prompted more than smiles from you... What is more important?... the earnings that some american companies would make,or the fact that such commerce is not likely to tricke down to the people but strenghten the goverment? Obviously, you do not think so, but you should show some respect to the large mayority of cuban-americans that do not share your views.
