Geither's new plan: banks' saving grace? Guess what: somebody's gonna make MO' MONEY!
Geither's new plan: banks' saving grace? Guess what: somebody's gonna make MO' MONEY!

It's TARP: Round 2, and the bell has rung.

The U.S. Treasury Secretary says this plan, one of the most ambitious government efforts to solve the financial crisis, will buy up about a HALF-TRILLION dollars worth of so-called "toxic" bank assets.

But you know what? Some companies are poised to actually MAKE MONEY from this rescue plan.

Rick's guests in this clip: Bob Lenzner from FORBES.COM, and CNN's Jessica Yellin in Washington (she attended the Geithner closed-door session that set the plan in motion).

Why are they called toxic, what else can you do with them, call them GOP parasites. the party of no.

frank c.   March 24th, 2009 8:27 am ET

Progress always involves risk; plunge in and have it over with.people forgot how fast we got into this mess, find the fault; then find a remedy upon the banks. in order to keep them clean.

Big Ern   March 24th, 2009 10:51 am ET

Rick,
Until and unless we determine how much money AIG contributed to the Politicians in D.C. we the taxpayer will be bailing these thieves out forever. The thing the american Taxpayer needs to know is Who donated how much to whom, and what they get in return aka bailout

Jeff   March 24th, 2009 11:09 am ET

Rick, Keep up the good work. I want to comment on AIG. There has been alot of talk about the bonuses that AIG has taken. AIG is not the only ones. There are other companies like CITI, WELLS FARGO,CHASE etc. has been milking the bonus programs for a long time. They need to be looked at also. They continue to pay for bad performances. They also continue to place their buddies around them that have high degrees but, NO COMMEN SENCE. These are the same people that has put us in the situation we are in. America needs to wake up and understand what has been going on for years.

Connie in Calgary   March 24th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

Americans want and need action on the banking crisis now! When the only immediate alternative is for the government to nationalize the failure of the markets by buying off or writing off the toxic assets, Geithner's plan is the far superior option. "Market-driven solutions" always means some companies make money. That's what happens when governments abrogate their responsibility to regulate.

hello rick, want to start a small catering business and have been directed to try start up capitol from government grants. problem is i keep running into websites that charge a good fee !!!!!!?? is there any
help for me ?????

Gary   March 24th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Don't people in this country realize the Federal Reserve is not a part of the government, but is made up of the largest banks in the world. The Fed has one agenda, and that is total control of our monetary system. John Kennedy was going to dissolve the Fed with a presidential order, and was killed three months later.

Pam Morgan   March 24th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

I have a toxic asset, with four bedrooms, two baths and a double garage on half-an-acre. Dozens of my neighbors hold similar toxic assets while we contemplate the pros and cons and ditching our mortgages, declaring bankruptcy and losing our homes. When a big bank holds an asset that loses market value, Geithner comes up with a plan for the government to cover their loss. When does the mere homeowner, with one vote and no lobbying power, get help with an asset that won't sell?

amy   March 24th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Hey Rick, who provided these buses to AIG homes? Lets see if we can round up some buses to the homes of DODD, BARNEY, and GEITNER? Where is CNN's outrage on these people? How about BO, lets hammer him down on his lack of leadership on oversight to OUR money. Shame on CNN for not looking out for the People.

Ralph Illinois   March 24th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

Hey Rick,
You need to watch the hearings today where Donald Manzulla from Rockford, Il. asked Bernanke about how we the "Taxpayers" backed AIG insurance to 401K plans to the tune of

$40,000,000,000 so that they would not lose any of their investments.

Sounds like a sweetheart deal to me.

irma   March 24th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

Let's remember that although the AIG execs were greedy, many ordinary people, like retired teachers etc.,hold AIG products that represent their life's savings. Don't use the broad brush when you paint the picture of AIG. If AIG were to completely fail, many of us who make much less than $50k a year will be wiped put.

Joe   March 24th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

Why is it that many people want GEITNER to fail and trying to use him as a SCAPE GOAT ? The man seems to know what he is doing and remember he is trying to fix eight years of failed politics from the famous Bush administration. He has only been in office for almost four months !!!! Its sad to say but when he is used as the scape goat who will the people go after then? It certainly will not be AIG !

L. Badley   March 24th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

I am a retiree, and was happy to retire, but now I am very angry.

Our Pension money has been stolen from us. All I here them talk about is AIG, what about the other insurance companies, that got away or getting away with their scam.

Will they check out Met Life, Prudential, Hardford or any other insurance companies. Are their CEO's or Executives getting raises, and using Wall Street as a way to steal. They need to be checked out also.

Yes! Wall Street did steal from us on Mainstreet, not only homeowners were hit our pensions and 401K was taken from us.

Will we get a stimulus package like the homeowners. I may not be a homeowner but I need my money to live.

I retired to enjoy my life, buy a home or open up my first business, how can I do this now, when they took $123,000 from my IRA

Put Our Money Back.....

Rita   March 24th, 2009 4:49 pm ET

Hi Rick...I would like to comment about this new plan to have the private sector share in helping the banks. Why doesn't President Obama put a 90% tax on the profits of the big oil companies? While the price of oil is down, our gas prices are above $200 a gallon again now. How can this be you ask? We all know that the oil companies are trying to get bigger profits again since they didn't get "quite" as much when the prices were well over $100 a barrel. This is just criminal!! Put a windfall tax on them and use that money to help the banks and leave us tax payers alone. We have plenty to pay for now!!

ANNEX MEXICO– MAKE MEXICO THE 51st STATE
It is a fact that mexicans want to be part of the
United States. We have as good an opportunity now as
we had in 1848 when we took Cafifornia, New Mexico, Nevada,
Arizona, Texas, and parts of Utah and Colorado from Mexico.

rather than giving the oppurtunity of investing $6.00 to big firms and having the government supply the rest towards toxic assets what about giving the public this oppurtunity?

jim carroll   March 24th, 2009 7:13 pm ET

PRESIDENT OBAMA SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO
AT LEAST 15 THINGS SIMULTANEOUS.
There are 15 Departments of Government; each of them
should at least be doing one thing. We need a new Departmet
of Consumers Affairs in order to control inflation–a euphemism
for theft which destroys the money supply. The Constitution does
not give monopolies the right to get what ever the traffic will bear.
The News Media should stop whinnig about The President working
to hard. We need to get our money's worth.

Rick,
When is the Government going to stimulate my package? If the banks can't do it now do I have to rely on Viagra?

jim carroll   March 24th, 2009 7:19 pm ET

FOR ONLY 1/2 OF A TRILLION DOLLARS
BACK POCKET CHANGE
For only ½ of a trillion dollars, America could pay
ten million unemployed workers $50,000 each for a year.
This would solve the economic problem and would
cost a lot less than giving a few trillion dollars to (tfb).
It would be a good way to fund a Reserve-Retraining
Work Force which would solve the problems
of unemployment. Unemployed people ought to be
paid a good living wage while they go back to school.

Rick I really felt we as a country had a chance of turning things around when we elected Obama.  I actually felt he understood the feelings of the everyday working man or woman.  Especially the unemployed.Yesterday I heard on talk radio that President Obama signed a book deal and has already received a $500,000.00 advancement. Today, I feel he understands nothing.  Maybe congress should give back their raises this year.  Do you think then they might understand the unemployed.  Nancy Polosi was asked to have them vote on it, but she said no.I fear everyone on capitol hill has really no idea what Americans are going through.

Robert Boyd   March 25th, 2009 12:59 am ET

Hey rick,I watch your show everyday and I think it's time to spice something up,I think u should air a show on dec.21,2012 because America has the right to know everything based on this subject because the governent is corrupt and they been hiding secrets from us and I think if u air this subject it will reveal the truth of what our governent has not been telling us.??

I have a question. Is AIG considered a monopoly? If not, why is it so important to the economy? If it is, how was AIG allowed to become a monompoly? Thanks

rockman   March 25th, 2009 9:32 am ET

CNN DOESNT LOOK OUT FOR THE PEOPLE, IT LOOKS OUT FOR HOLLYWOOD AND THE DEMOCRATS ( THE GODLESS IF YOU LIKE ). THE DECEPTION THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE FACING IS OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS; DID GEITHNER NOT SAY THAT AMERICA SHOULD ADOPT A GLOBAL CURRENCY? IT APPEARS THAT AMERICA IS BEING WALKED INTO A GLOBAL SOCIALIZED GOVERNMENT. READ THE BOOK OF REVELATION FOR AN UPDATE.

philippe   March 25th, 2009 11:27 am ET

I am very troubled by how people put a lot of effort to discredit president Obama...specially on the Rick and Bubba radio show. They speak of thinks like how Obama wants to make america a socialiste country and talks about gun control issues as if it was first introduce under this presidency...I think Obama is trying to fix thinks and to everybody benefit we should rally and not divide....please do not make it personal

Terri   March 25th, 2009 11:47 am ET

A few weeks ago you wrote about legalizing Marj. I heard a foreign news correspondent say the same thing. The U.S. is letting TRUCK LOADS of money go back over the boarder. Fix the issue of demand!

Here is what I say: Hillary Clinton should make a treaty with the Mexican Government (because Mexican authorities and drug cartel are all in bed together anyways.) legalize Marijuana in the U.S. Keep the Liquor, tobacco and Pharmaceutical companies at bay and tax Marijuana. Then Mexico imports a legal commodity and the U.S. keeps the truckload of cash and pays down the deficit.

Should I be in politics?

Thank you for your honest forum, we appreciate you and CNN.

Claudia Wallace   March 25th, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Welfare and Unemployment:

I was wondering if CNN could do a report on the rising stats of unemployment and welfare? There will be a rise in welfare applications and housing applications. What is going to happen to these families who have no money and no where to live? What about the single unemployed , who remain unemployed, who have no possibility of getting aid, where are they going to end up? Really, this topic must be seriously open for discussion and debate..

Kerry   March 25th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Hi Rick,

I hope you read this comment especially since I'm not American and live in the Caribbean but follow American Politics very closely.
I think Pres. Obama is doing an excellent job, re: the economy, much better than Pres. Bush ever did. John McCain is probably counting is lucky stars that he did win.

I noticed last night that the president was reading the telepromter very well. How much of it did hear himself say? It was like an actor reading his/her lines for a show and not really meaning it.

Brian   March 25th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

From a fairness perspective, does it make sense for the congressional leaders who hastily passed the 'bailout' plan, with limited public debate, and a plan with few to no provisions related to legal contractual obligations (i.e., bonuses) to have their Congressional salaries taxed retroactive at a 90% rate since they failed the American taxpayer?

Terik Ororke   March 25th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

Why no mention of entitlement programs by the Pres? Why does Congress and our laws force people into entitlements and or policies that they have to follow while not given funding, and then all of a sudden, it is entitlements that are the problem and people have to lose them or have them seriously curtailed.

Claudia Wallace   March 25th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

I am really concerned about the families and the single unemployed who will have nowhere to go, but, the food kitchens and the street, when the unemployment benefits run out...

elias (cubano)   March 25th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

rick can we get some clarity around the AIG retention bonuses? many people are up in arms that the people who received the retention bonuses are no longer there. I am not a defender of AIG, but we need to understand that some retention bonuses are negotiated when a business is about to close and the company wants employees to stick around to help close the business gracefully. In those cases it is perfectly normal to pay people a bonus to stick around until they sell their book of business, and of course they would not be still there after they completed their negotiated task.

Theodore Lupina   March 25th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez,
Why do you and your fellow newspeople continue to accept lies by this and the previous administration? It was obvious that the Treasury Secretary lied about the knowledge of AIG. By your own company's newscast, he was told about the bonuses on March 3, yet he (the secretary) claimed he did not know until much later. This is a clear lie, yet nobody will ask Obama about this. When somebody asks Obama a tough question, He (Obama) sidesteps the question, and nobody will call him on it!

I'm from Canada, waching CNN. I can't help but notice that it seems like almost everyone has a slant or bias towards The PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. I know exactly why it is...and it is about time that we address the real problem that we still face in society towards blacks...especially from whites. There are unwarranted criticisms towards him reading the teleprompter at the very beginning of the Press Meeting.

MaxK   March 25th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Hey Rick, really enjoy your show but it was great to see that self absorbed Ed Henry attempt a typical journalistic "gotcha" with the President last night and get it shoved right back in his face. You go President Obama, don't take any crap from those "actor/reporters"!

Jasmine   March 25th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

Rick, you hit the nail on the head with your assurtion that there is a double standard when it comes to certain members of the media as well as members of the conservitive movement's evaluation of President Obama's policy making. I thought it was just me thinking that was happening because of my African-American race. It makes me feel a bit at ease that you brougth that up as well as the President's skillfull short and sweet commmentary on the subject of race in that regard. I'm hoping and praying that one day we all can be jugded by our individual deeds.

Oversight2012   March 25th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Hello Rick, love the show. I think the fix for our borders in Mexico is the same solution for Iraq, Afganstan, possibly Iran. Closing the boarders to these countries, and limiting their trade with external countries should help. However, with most things in the world now, it would have to be a Global effort.

Why wouldn't Texas, take the stimulus money and heir many of these homeless veterans ( who have been trained to do this work) and protect our borders?

jwatts   March 25th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Rick could you tell me if the political party not in power has always been as nasty as it is now? It makes me sick to listen to all of the fear and hate the Republicans are pushing. Why is FOX allowed to report as they want and edit interviews to suit their purpose of dividing country? I believe in free speech, but isn't there some responsibility of honesty involved along with it?

sallyaz   March 25th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Hey Rick they just dont get it! my question is what is their service they provide or what product do they sell? now if they our given millions as bonuses, where do those millions come from? their product or service? i imagine they are getting paid for selling us (i admit they convince you) these home mortgages that brought down our financial system, if they stop to think what they did to (not earn) but bring in this kind of money, earning they probably did but if i were to sell something that brings our economy crashing do they deserve the consequence even if it didnt play out, i know there probably was no conditions, but they dont get what it does to all that got taken, rather gullable or naive! sorry

richard brunelle   March 25th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Rick; If AIG did'nt receive any money and went bankrupt, would they have received the retention bonuses?

Jose Gonzalez, Sr.   March 25th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

It is unreal that Newt made that statement about Obama going to Notre Dame. Was it not him having an affair??

Bill   March 25th, 2009 3:58 pm ET

The people that received a bonus were retained to wind down over $1trillion of Credit Default Swaps What the American people are missing is those AIG people have eliminated $1 trillion of risk from a company that we the people own...I think they did an excellent job and deserve their bonus.

My comment is not about the banks. I am outraged about the Catholic church and it's attitude towards our President! I was baptized Catholic as a baby and attended church with my grandparents when I got older. Although I am a devote Christian........I do not belong to any church. People are leaving churches at an amazing rate. There is a very good reason. The churches are NOT doing what they were set up to do. They have made up their own rules. Rules that have no basis in biblical teachings and they try to force, intimidate, and scare people into obeying these rules in addition to giving them tons of money. We were created with free-will and the last I heard from our Creator he had NOT given any person or religious sect authority to remove that free-will. They have turned into control freaks and fear mongers. Thank the Lord our new President isn't caving into them. I am not in favor of abortion, but, I do support our right to free-will. Thank you for allowing me to vent.

Emmett Yearta   March 25th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

The real JOKE regarding the AIG bonuses is on Giethner and Dodd. Perhaps on all who were so surprised that the stimulus bill allowed this to be done. Now, BHO is trying to pull the attention away from these guys. Never in my 72 years have I seen such POOR leadership in this great nation. Obama would be a good stand up comic.

Ed Sanchez   March 25th, 2009 6:06 pm ET

Its sad... to see what the past and present has given Obama. Its sad... to hear the type questions that the media and Rep party ask him. Its sad.. to see what the the Industries of America have done to this economy. My intuition tells me that because the Democrats won. The fat cats in wall street pulled there stocks out and that the big time Industries lay offs, were done on purpose. My intuitions tells me if you were to do a fact check, on all the Industries and wall street fat cat, you'll find that they're republicans. They've all just pulled the rug right from under this new administration. Obama knows this and he has to not show in tell, because they will continue do do it! Its sad to feel he's alone in the white house. Tho one things has is the American people as a whole support! Including me. A Moderate REP P.S. The name GOP stands for arrogance and pretentiousness. I don't know where we went wrong :-(

My mother is 76 and she is so angry at the way people continually bad mouth the President, call him names, and hope he fails. She said she has never seen such viciousness in all her days. And for once, she says, we actually have a good leader, who really cares about Americans. President is the best man for the job. People who really love this country and their countrymen, instead of themselves and their ideology, would never hope for our President to fail.

Paul Harris   March 26th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

First, allow me to congratulate you for a smart, with it, hip program. That being said, allow me to tell you my story, which hopefully will elucidate my comment about you. (This, of course is for Rick Sanchez) I am an about to be 76 year old gay man. But, until August of 1968 I was very closeted, married and the father of 2 children. I grew up in poverty in the Jewish ghetto's of Brooklyn, New York. Contrary to populat belief, I was raised with the classics in art, literature and music. Poverty is not necessarilly ignorance and stupidity. I married, not to hide my being gay but because I believed that marriage and children was what a man did! I bought societies narrow view of the world. In 1968, August to be exact, I left my wife and children to become a 'real' person and not an empty creation based on what society said I was supposed to be., In the ensuing years I've learned many things I had no idea I didn't know. This brings me to my comment. Rick, there are time when you come accross as naive and/or simply ignorant. We hear the word ghetto and immediately think of a black/hispanic city area. In all reality each and every one of us lives in a "ghetto". When we live in neighborhoods that mirror our way of life, we are, in all reality, in a ghetto. We tend to believe that everyone shares our beliefs, etc. NO! Everyone does not. In fact the years between 1968 and today have taught me a hard lesson. The majority of society, which is known as the underbelly of society, has a much harder, caustic view of the world they live in. So the killer of that former newsman in New York City is not quite the shock you seem to think it is. At 16 he had a much different life system than you or I. He is a self described sadomasochistic prostitute. To be shocked, surprised even unbelieving, reveals a naive relatively sheltered person. We may not like the very real world, but it is there, festering and gloating at our total ignorance of it's existence. Sir Arthut Conan Doyle, the creator of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries developed a way of reasoning that he called diductive reasoning. Basically it says, remove all that makes no sense and what's left has to be. As a talking head it behooves you and your co-workers to actually study and understand how humans function. We (in the editorial sense) need to cast off and discard rosy beliefs and understanding and spend some time wallowing in the real world.

Hey Rick ,love your show. Why can't the White House help the little guy just once..With all the sub-prime loans and credit cards that were given out,it has put the "LITTLE GUY" in the hole forever. These people will never and I mean NEVER get out of debt. The goverment did nothing to stop this and now they want to play games with OUR money.Had they given around $400,000 to each taxpayer and taxed it at 40%,people would have paid their bills ,invested in the stock market, bought cars,The goverment would have seen almost half come right back in taxs, and the little guy would have had a fresh start toward relizing the "AMERICAN DREAM".As it stands we are worse off than when we started.I think this action would have turned this mess around overnite. Like always they really do nothing to help the little guy,the backbone of this country..Thanks Jim Merrick

Dear Mr Sanchez, Hi, Giving the banks money will not solve the economy problem. People need Jobs to buy Houses. The first thing the back ask's you when you apply for a loan or a mortage is , do you have a job. If you say no, Forget it. Your not getting squat. So, The only solution to the enconomy crisis is to create more Jobs. Period. Its the only way to solve it. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that. Thank you, Jack in Florida. cerebrus capital bought chrysler from daimler for 7.4 billion. How many billions have they recovered from the tax payer since the elections? HOw much more fleecing before we realize that this corporation is not owned by an automaker but rather a group of wall street speculators. How much have written off tax loopholes, depreciation and like? "enough is enough.

The banks get billions ...the insurance company gets billions ..... Why is it that only the auto industry has to have a CEO fall on his sword to get a government loan to keep the manufacturing sector from going under?

Why do companies doing good always call for the laying off of
the people who make the less amount of money. And the fat cats
at the top, who are really taking the money from the companies get
to stay and take more and more money .

This plan tops the cake of the already out of control spending spree that this newly elected government has done since they took over. Even my basic business sense tells me that to spend more money to stimulate business doesn't make sense. Tell me what business does this. Now our Mr. Geithner wants to purchase "toxic" securities to free up the banks coffers so they will feel better about issuing loans. Guess who's going to pay for them, umm... the US taxpayer that's who! You and I and our children for years to come. If history tells us anything its that what goes up must come down, the same is true for business, housing, the market, etc... I for one would have preferred not to bail out anyone and let the chips fall where they may. If the government is going to hand out money then why not hand it out to the taxpayers themselves, instead of the businesses that got themselves into this mess in the first place.

Trust me the shareholders would oust the CEOs, CFOs and COOs of the companies that have performed poorly. Thats the way its supposed to work. Why is the government stepping in to do their job for them.

So to cover our expenses we print more money. Why didn't I think of this. Probably because its the wrong thing to do in the first place.

I think that I'll go out and charge everything that I want on my credit cards and then apply for more credit cards and charge to them as well. I can then just pass this debt off to my children, right?

Thanks for clearing up this little detail, Mr. Obama and staff.

Stop calling our president a rock star and call him what he is. He is the President of the United States of America who i s the most famous well liked and well known president America has ever had and he has not been in office a hundred days yet. President Obama is not the most famous president just because he is the first black president, Mr. Obama is the most famous president because he is Wise, Honest, A Great Family Man, a president who cares for All Americans and other Nations. The president Respects all people and is Truly Concerned about all Children. On top of all the above he is handsome and charming. He earned his popularity from being a Man of God, Hard Work, Knowning the Importance of Education, Loving and Taking Care of His Family and Respecting All People. Mr. Obama knew what kind of a Man he wanted to be and that is who he became. I know of a lot of rock stars but they do not have the qualities and character of our President. We did not Label President Kennedy a rock star because of his good looks and popularity so stop doing it to our president.

Hey Rick where do you think the polorization has come from . Black, white , brown or green the President is a radical liberal and he has 90% of the news media in his pocket. He is appointing people that completely contradict the principles that this country was built on. If the constitution gets in there way they ignore it. Come on man if you dont think that our solidarity and freedom is at stake I want to know who is lining your pockets . A good place to starty changing things would be demanding that politicians both Dem. and Rep. are held accountable for there actions and are not above the law. we are in a bad place right now we are spending money that we will never have and showing increadable weakness. last everyone who considers themselves liberal need to remember that barely half the country agrees with you and the wierder things get the less support you will have.

Rick, you're the only person with guts enough to bring up assault weapons. Who are the 65 Democrats who are protecting the sales of assault weapons? Their names should be posted every time an American police officer is murdered. The police officer is, as far as I know, the only game target for sportsmen using assault weapons. I would like the NRA to explain what other game targets require assault weapons.
