R. Murdoch

He's Sorry. (Getty Images)

Something to take note of today, an apology from Rupert Murdoch.

It comes as a bit of a shocker to most that Murdoch, the owner of Fox News, would personally apologize for the insensitivity of one of his news outlets, but that is exactly what he is doing.

He's apologizing for the cartoon that shows a chimp being shot twice in the chest and references President Obama's stimulus package.

Here's the apology:
"Last week, we made a mistake. We ran a cartoon that offended many people. Today I want to personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted." - Rupert Murdoch

Since arriving in New York more than 30 years ago, Murdock and his associates have, according to the Village Voice, “delighted in throwing gasoline on every racial fire they could spot.”

So what’s different now? Is it that Murdoch is no longer interested in making money on tabloids, because he owns the Wall Street Journal?

Or is it because he’s afraid some people, like Rev. Al Sharpton did on this show last week, will successfully challenge whether he should be allowed to own so many media companies?

In New York, they’re betting on the latter.

What do you think?

Have wondered for a long time how long it would take for the public to wake up re:Murdock!! HE IS A DANGEROUS MAN!! And FOX News is NOT unbiased at all and getting worse. There should be a limit on how much can be owned in one sector by one RICH, RICH person!

Steven Harrison   February 24th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

This cartoon for murdock to appologize is an apology for trampleing over freedom of speach. Yes it may have been distastefull, but it is still protected.

Wait! let me get this straight. We have an attorney general who says we need to open up and talk about race more openly, then when a cartoonist expresses his opinion about the stimulous package (which I didn't see as racist, but then I don't consider my black friends as looking like or being related to monkeys either)many in the community want him and the editor of the paper fired? So much for wanting people to express themselves on race or their opinions on government actions of stupidity. Rev. (hahahoho)Al Sharpton should read the bible from time to time, he'd learn alot. Eccl. 7:9 Al Sharpton is always at the front of the crowd who takes offense at whatever they can find to be offended at in everyday life, and they always try to make it a racial issue. I grew up in a mixed neighborhood, my nextdoor neighbors were black americans, and great people. Most of the black americans I have known all my life think Al Sharpton is a biggot, with good reason. He is ! I can talk to anyone about race and ethnicity, because to me that is not what makes a person who they are. I do not tolerate troublemakers within the community, Al Sharpton is a troublemaker who strives to bring up the past wrongs against blacks and keep it in the forefront of all americans. Truth be told Al, the United States government took much stronger action against native americans than it ever did against blacks, going in and wiping out entire settlements of them. But you don't hear nearly the outcry about the past treatment of indians. The natives have moved on with life. It's time for the angered blacks to accept the freedom Abe Lincoln afforded them along with the U.S. government, and move on with life.

AL   February 24th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

maybe murdock just realized that his paper just insulted the most powerful man in the world who just happened to be Black., and maybe called for his assasination. Presidents can do things to people like murdock.

Robert Farran   February 24th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

Mr. Murdoch should be divested of all but one of his media holdings. It is against long-standing federal policy for one person to hold so many media outlets. It should never have happened and it should be corrected immediately.

George Lawhon   February 24th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

As to your question about the reason for Murdoch's mea culpa. Only God knows what is in the heart of a man or a woman; but considering his record, I'll go for the choice that he is scared spitless about losing all those media toys. Good luck..love your show.

Gary   February 24th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

Rick, I feel that he monkey cartoon is insighting harm to the President and an apology by Mr. Murdock is not enough. The people responsible should be investigated by the secret service. this seems to be a blatant threat to the President and that is a crime.

Kris MSN, NP   February 24th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

I think it is absolutely flawed that one person has so much power over so many media outlets. Free speech? Think again ..... Everything is filtered through "the powers that be." Such a sad state of affairs we find ourselves in......

FRAN   February 24th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

He's afraid underestimated rev.sharpton take him down and continue to boycott i have faith the fcc will do the right thing we stand and support rev sharpton 100%.

Mamie Thomas   February 24th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

I was glad to see the apology from Mr Murdock, however, when he says some people it says that mostly black people , including Al Sharpton. Things like that cartoon, hurts and only people of color can understand that! White america knows the history and should be upset as well. We have a black president, but we still have a racial problem.

AllAmerican   February 24th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Imagine if Rush Limbaugh owned all of these media outlets....well, that's Rupert Murdoch! Same thing! In my opinion, the NY Post is racist and Fox News is nothing more than a divisive propaganda instrument.

Dorothy Labi   February 24th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Does Al Sharpton want MORE than an apology from Rupert Murdock? An apology is not enough for him? If he wants Mr. Murdock to give up the NY Post, who will take it over? If the NY Post folds, what does he say to the thousands who will lose their jobs? What does he say to New Yorkers who would only have one less daily paper?
Who is Al Sharpton to point out the splinter in someone else's eye?

nick clark   February 24th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

This is the reason you can not have discusions on racism. A normal cartoon to the most of us and a insulting cartoon to blacks, they remind me of the muslins rioting over the dutch cartoon.al sharpton and others are the ones that inflame race and it is always about the money. what did we expect? generation after generation of some folks have been brought up with no respect for the law and knowing that being thinned skinned can bring big rewards in court because no jury wants riots as a result of their verdict..We have to admit that racism is done by every race and that only high profile people get caught saying what everyone on all sides say or do all the time.As long as one race is going to be the victim espicially after years of special treatment in courts and at schools, theres no money in stopping it ever!

Paul Rogers, Walker, Michigan   February 24th, 2009 3:58 pm ET

First of all, I don't feel that this cartoon was at all offensive. Secondly I think that it is wrong of Rupert Murdoch to apologize for something that is not important and not offensive.

When are people in this country going to learn that complaining about everything that bothers them and arguing about things when all they need to do is turn off the TV, change the channel or not read the paper, is just hurting things.

Maybe they never heard of "Freedom of Speech" or maybe they don't realize the importance of it, but all that they are doing by complaining about everything is making things more difficult for everyone.

Paul

Daniel Enculescu   February 24th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Dear Mr. Sanchez:

Mr. Murdoch's "mea culpa" was not an apology! It was a joke!
I certainly hope that Mr. Sharpton will follow through with his threat and will succeed in removing The Post from Mr. Murdoch's ownership.
And I think that all those involved, Mr Murdoch, The Post, the cartoonist and the editor should be fined and sued for their blatant display of racism.
Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,
Daniel

Dear Rick:
Looks like Senator (I'm furious I lost the election) McCain will appear on Larry King Live tonight(?). McCain needs to stop acting like a sore loser and start getting on board with supporting all the people working their butts off trying to fix this economy. I haven't heard one new word of solution out of McCain's mouth. All he does is criticize and it's getting real old real fast. The Republicans need to remember the age old definition of insanity: it's doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. With the Republicans, it's always a one-size-fits-all-situations which is tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts. Every one I've asked, from family to friends to co-workers: tax cut money would immediately go to paying off credit card bills with the balance heading straight into a savings account. No stimulus there! Do the Republicans EVER do ANY market research to learn the consequences of their proposals or are they just hoping that their repeated "insanity" will somehow result in a miraculous outcome?? Please suggest that Larry King consider asking McCain to whom he and his Republican colleagues have spoken to (their constituents) as to what they would ACTUALLY DO with tax cut money?? Also, they do nothing but insist that the stimulus bill was passed without adequate review. Hey! You Republican morons had EIGHT YEARS to figure it out. You squandered a budget surplus that would today be worth trillions, according to economists. No adequate time for review? Sounds like paralysis by analysis, to me. No more time, fools. You had your chance. The rest of us are moving on.

tom   February 24th, 2009 4:02 pm ET

Notice fox news isn't covering this no mention of it not a republicans trying to duck this . Rev sharpton keep the pressure on them and fcc don't tolerate it make an example of him. Boycott boycott boycott
shut him down then we'll except his apolgy.

Paul   February 24th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

Rick,

The problem has always been thats it's OK say anything you want in the post and other papers and media.
There is no voice to retort through for minorities that could be heard.

But if you put this cartoonist or Murdock in a room with black people they would act as if they were the most inclusive people and would never say or do anything that could be racist. But we all know now that they are not only racist but liers as well.

Purnell Kankakee IL.   February 24th, 2009 4:08 pm ET

Minnie A. Wilson   February 24th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Rick, people will associate Afghanistan with Obama only if you and the rest of the anchors do so by constantly asking the question. Both wars are Bush's!!! Obama is just trying to get us back on track after Bush decided to give up search for Osama and look for WMD's in Iraq and thumb Sadam at the same time!!!

Janet Jones   February 24th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Rick on your show Tuesday you were discussing the wars and you called President Obama, Barack Obama, twice. You mentioned Hillary Clinton's name and corrected yourself when you called her Hillary Clinton to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Can our President get the same Respect, it is PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, NOT BARACK OBAMA. Please Call him President Obama.

Diane   February 24th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

I feel the cartoon is as racist as hanging a rope from a tree. More so because it depicts the President of our country being assinnated. I think if the newspaper had depicted George Bush setting in a corner in a dunce cap it would have been humerous but, if it were a KKK top hat it would have and should have been offensive to the entire American community.
I disagreed with the Attorney General using the word "COWARD" to express his views on the state of racism but his overall message is clear.
I do not subscribe to the New York Post and very rarily watch Fox News but, I believe these professionals should have a system setup to prevent these types of snafus from reaching the airways.

susan   February 24th, 2009 4:25 pm ET

Rick i appreciate your coverage of this racist cartoon and keeping the spot light on rupert murdoch he allowed this to spew through the media. Rev sharpton keep the foot on the pedal don't stop until his racist empire collapse fox news this is what i call fair and balanced.

Ingrid   February 24th, 2009 4:26 pm ET

I think that I am glad I was not faced with direct in your face racism. I came from another country- we had a kind of subtle racism for many years, then we had the East Indian whom we all grew up like sisters and brother were turned against each other and so we sometimes have clashes. But we do get along in most cases.
Except now they are in power, and they have most of the office jobs and what not. But I think that cop is one of those who used this particular job to get his point accross; like some petifials who seek jobs to get close to kids. We need to do some more screening of such people we hire in our establishment, wheter government or private.

eileen in Virginia   February 24th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

You offer only two reasons why Mr. Murdoch would offer this response. Is it not possible he regrets the misunderstanding and offense. The cartoonist may not represent the President or any government official with the chimp figure, but might mean that the economic crisis is so complex that expertise might be guesswork. Even a chimp might offer advise worth considering.

pete   February 24th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

Don't buy the post boycott boycott fcc shut em up thanks rev sharpton and the naacp.

sherry , tyler,tx   February 24th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

rick, the racist implication of the cartoon is the #2 issue. The #1 issue is the implication of assination of our president. the #3 issue is that most of the people, the paper, law enforcement, and even Lou Dobbs defends it as a freespeech issue. Up until we got a black president it was illegal to even imply assination. America, your racism is showing

kevin   February 24th, 2009 4:37 pm ET

It's all on rupert murdoch he allowed this to spew through the media without stopping this that's a racist for you. Underestimated the power of american minorites sticking together with the guidance of rev sharpton take him down shut him down fcc make it happen. Hey fox news this is what i call fair and balanced.

Lou Coutu   February 24th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

Who approved of the cartoon in the first place? He did of course. If it is offensive now (and is) then it was offensive when HE published the cartoon. This apology is a little like slamming the door after the horse got out.

Connie in Calgary   February 24th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

Rick:

There are many worldwide who dont understand why Murdoch isnt right now sharing a prison cell with Conrad Black !?! Perhaps Murdoch keeps his shareholders happier than Black did. ?

Mary C. Houston   February 24th, 2009 6:59 pm ET

Mr. Sanchez, The copy of Obama's birth certificate showed on CNN was not a "vault copy" birth certificate. It was a certificate of "Live Birth". Hawaii gives these out if you live there and request them. Obama has NOT SHOWED his birth certicate. You have not done your research. Obama's paternal grandmother has stated Obama was born in Kenya. All his school records are "locked down"....The truth is Mr. Obama has not proven he is a US citizen. DO THE RESEARCH

Buddy Milo   February 24th, 2009 7:38 pm ET

For the ridiculously austere comic, Mr. Murdoch's apology is enough. As for his owning too many media outlets... our ignorance as a society to the damages from greed is far more dangerous than the greedy people trying to control our lives... when we wake up we'll begin a better future for ourselves.

Kiki   February 24th, 2009 7:54 pm ET

Sad, sad, sad. Sounds a lot like the Mohammad cartoons that were banned because they "insulted" muslims. What is this country coming to. Just because someone disagrees with you, they boycott you, want to silence you and shut you down. What happen to freedom of speech. This country is going down fast when we let the likes of Al Sharpon dictate what free speech is. They sure like to throw out the word racist whenever they disagree with something. Yes, Eric Holder is right, we are a nation of COWARDS!

tough one   February 24th, 2009 11:45 pm ET

If people are still whining and complaining "racism" about this cartoon even after the election of the first African American President. then they are seriously insecure about their skin color. Look, Mr. Murdoch can help the fact that people like Rev. Al Sharpton and Roland Martin hate how they look in the mirror, and as a result try to make everyone around them feel sorry for them.

tough one   February 24th, 2009 11:54 pm ET

Mr. Murdoch has bent all the laws regarding ownership of the media. His friend George W allowed him to own more them one publication or TV station in NY. Another abuse of how rich greed has destroyed our country. He has owned the bankrupt NY Post for years.Just to own it?Now he probably destroyed it.He hates the NY Times. He has too much power and it should be taken away. His apology doesn't take back the terrible statement made by his cartoonist. He should loose the paper.

Its funny I used a universal translator, ya know the one from old star trek that lets u communicate with all life forms.... the words came out like this: "Even though i've never apologized for anything before, my papers are broke, people are questioning the grandfather clause that lets me control so many media outles, so i distance myself from the people who work for me in attempt to not lose anymore subscribers"

samagskg   February 26th, 2009 3:04 pm ET

First of all, there is such a thing as free speech in our country. Certain people (Sharpton especially) try to glean everything even remotely racist out of everything they see or hear. It is no wonder that the flames of racism keep popping up. It is because of people like Sharpton that keep them going. Get a life, Sharpton, and quit stirring up trouble.

Lisa   February 26th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Roland S. Martin just wants his race card back, you can't have a black president and keep your race card! Who do you think voted for Obama, EVERYONE! Of course there is still racism but out of all of North America you are seeing a few here and there, that is a good sign, if there was a real problem you would see racism pouring in and Obama would never have gotten elected! Roland asked some students in DE who they go to lunch with and then he said they just looked at each other. I was offended by that comment because I go to lunch with my black friends amongst other races. He needs to understand it is NOT the color of your skin, it is who you are! Maybe that person is a jerk and I don't wan't to go to lunch with them, did he ever think of that?!

Antoinette   February 27th, 2009 12:52 am ET

It's almost rare for Rupert Murdoch to apologize for anything, but I suspect this was damage control so advertisers won't jump ship on the NY Post. Newspapers across the nation are suffering from declining advertising and Murdoch can't afford to have unhappy shareholders. News Corporation's stock is not doing well. Last fall, they cancelled their annual Christmas party.

Matt Turner   February 27th, 2009 1:13 am ET

Mr Sanchez,

The birth certificate you showed is not the legal document that is required for Obama to prove he is “natural born citizen” which is required by the Section 1 of Article Two of the United States Constitution. In fact, Obama is not “natural born citizen” because his father was a Kenyan/British citizen at Obama’s birth, but he also may not have been born in Hawaii which means he may not even be a US citizen – call me crazy but do your homework:

Obama released a birth certificate via his website http://www.factcheck.org. However, not only has this document has been disputed by reputable counterfeit professionals as a fraud, (look it up or ask me for links). The Hawaii Health Department issues birth certificates to individuals born abroad, so he has NOT produced the legitimate document that says he is a US citizen.
See this from Hawaii Department of Health's own website:
“[§338-17.8] Certificates for children born out of State. (a) Upon application of an adult or the legal parents of a minor child, the director of health shall issue a birth certificate for such adult or minor, provided that proof has been submitted to the director of health that the legal parents of such individual while living without the Territory or State of Hawaii had declared the Territory or State of Hawaii as their legal residence for at least one year immediately preceding the birth or adoption of such child.”

This country is getting worse by the day. You can't breath the word race in any form. And Eric Holder is not helping matters, with his comment towards race, acusing Americans of being "cowards". I do agree with Sharpton, that the Cartoon was out of taste and it appears that one can implement Cartoons, with humor and with other subject matter. It is easy to believe that the supposedly Chimpanzee could be misunderstood for a human being. Howver, the fact that an apology was made and "don't do it again", shold be sufficient. The extreme that Sharpton orignally wanted to take this was infringing on the First Amendment of Freedom of Speech. We need to drop this issue on move forward to more critical problems facing this Nation. And we need to be respectful, as Americans, to all races, color and creed.

Danny Vestal   March 1st, 2009 9:59 am ET

Rick,

You must look beyond the judges in Luzerne County. There is an organized crime element involved . This story should not end with the sentencing of the crooked judges. They are just puppets on the mob's strings. Look at the owership structure of the detention facility and the Buffilino family in Pitston PA.

This is a story in the waiting for Coppola or Oliver Stone.

Follow the money...and good luck.

Regarding the recent Chris Brown episode of violence against Rihanna....
I'm sure in the heat of commentary Rick wasn't aware of his phrasing of his comment about Rihanna getting back with Chris and that she has some friends who would "knock some sense into her" to change her mind.....That's probably what Chris Brown was thinking when he physically attacked her...I'll just "knock some sense into her! From Rick's comment, you can see how ingrained in our thoughts and vocabulary the belief that someone can be made more "sensible" if they are hit physically. It begins with the thought, then the verbal attacks and finally the physical act.
I feel sorry for Chris Brown because he obviously believes what he did was ok but please Rick, try not to add to it by verbalizing violence on national television!

Clancy   March 5th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

There's more to this story than what has been told...something else happened on that boat. Why would anyone that far out take off the life jacket?

Clancy   March 5th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

I thinking something along the line of murder...I may be wrong on this but something doesn't sound right about these boaters.

dear mr. sanchez I am a canadian and i was watching your show and i am tried of republican say there are canadians who are unhappy with the healthcare, this just is not true. If this true that canadians don't like want haelthcare why do we have it , we also get to vote in this country so that means most canadians do like healthcare. The system is not perfect but at least i won't lose my shirt if i happen to get sick.

canadian with jaw dropped   March 5th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Hi Rick: I am a recently retired high school teacher in Toronto. I sit here with my jaw dropped once again. Why do you people put up with your healthcare situation? Here are my comments"

1, I have never seen a cash register at my doctor's office.
2. I have never seen a MASTERCARD VISA AMERICAN EX sign
3. I have never received a bill from a doctor/hospital.
4. I don't go to my doctor frequently just because it's free.
5. My doctor, himself, called me today to tell me I need to see him about my blood pressure medication before he renews it.
6. My doctor works on "capitation"==He is paid by the total number of people on his roster, not fee for service, so I can have a full hour with no one waiting.
7. I have NEVER waited for an appointment with my GP or any specialist I've seen.
8. We all choose our own doctor.
9. When I retired, I didn't need to think about healthcare. It is just there==like postal service, education etc.
10. Why do you people put up with anything else?
11. It is impossible in Canada to go bankrupt, lose your healthcare or your home due to a medical expense EVER. In fact "Profit" for medical service is illegal. It is truly a right.

P.S. To help Americans who "fear" or don't trust "socialized medicine" , ask yourself this. Do I fear public education because it's provided through the government? Do I fear mail service because it's provided? Do I fear or reject the military because national defence is provided without a fee? (Socialized) postal service, education, healthcare, defence,.....a right not a priviledge Support Barrack! He'll get you there. Don"t accept the big insurance companies' attacks on an overhauled system...and they WILL ATTACK....THEY TRIED IT HERE OVER 50 YEARS AGO AND UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE WON.

If we did it you certainly can.

Your Canadian Friend watching.
