CitiGroup is spending some of their federal bailout money. Do you know what they're buying? (Getty Images)

Something to take note of today:

The word I'm thinking of is "tone-deaf", however, this is not about music. It's that rare ability to read the mood of the country and then do exactly the opposite.

(This usually doesn't happen to people who twitter, blog or keep up at all with the social media, but maybe that's my own bias.)

Here's the point: at a time when tens of thousands of Americans are losing their jobs, and when those same Americans are having to bail out huge corporations for the good of the whole, what do we learn today?

Citigroup, the bank that's gotten $45 billion in government aid, is moving forward on buying a new corporate jet.

The New York Post reports the jet costs $50 million and seats only 12 people...12!

The leather is said to be extremely plush and the plane is one of the fastest in the world. It can go six thousand miles without re-fueling and tops out at 559 miles an hour.

Asked about the plane: Citigroup says this:
"For security reasons, we cannot comment.
Executives are encouraged to fly commercial whenever possible to reduce expenses.
Over the past eight years, Citi has reduced the number of aircraft by two-thirds."

If this represents a reduction, one wonders what they do when they splurge?

Tell me what you think.

I received a letter from Citi Bank yesterday that informed me they were raising interest from about 9% t 16.99%. Wonder if they are trying to raise money for than new jet they are buying? Banks are "out of control!" All this will do is put undue stress on the people that are already hurting.

les   January 26th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

Rick your reporter in Iceland should tell us what the economic failure there really means. Showing pictures of burning is newsworthy but what does this all really say??

They got us into this mess and now they're upset that we don't want to bail them out. They fooled the last administration but won't fool the new administration. If the election proved one thing it's that the younger generation has taken over. Game over fat cats! You're so yesterday.
Watch for the next ones to mess up, Bank of America and Merrill Lynch.

Now that Guantanamo is going to be empty soon, let us fill it with these and other bank executives and with any lawmaker who voted to give them our money to begin with.

What is all the hype about rush limbaugh. A recovering drug addict. If he is in recovery?
The only reason he can do what he does, is you the media, promotes his tirades. If you quit reporting about him, he will no longer be so prominent and a total embarrasment to the US.
I am so tired of hearing about a jerk who continues to get unnecessary media attention.

Matt Rodencal   January 26th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

On Citi bank and others: The Fed should demand our money back and let them fail or force them to survive, just like the big three!

Barbara Webber   January 26th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

The banking leadership including the outgoing Treasurer have shown themselves incapable of grasping the gravity of the current situation. As in other countries and as the US did during Depression, key banks should be nationalized so that the national good is ensured and there is some return for tax payer investment in the financial system vs. tossing away money.

Can you say, "accountability"?!
I do recall our commander and chief mentioning that word several if not a hundred times and yet we "Americans" still can not get straight answer to where this so called "bail-out" funding is really going and more importantly if we have any say in the matter.
The "GOP" and the "DEM" can stroke there egos on their own time!

Hi Rick,
The problem I have with Rush Limbaugh's commentary is that his listeners only hear his hate-mongering, fear-mongering monologue with no opposing views. That's why Rush won't answer your calls. He'd have to reply to challenges of his biased harangue. That people actually listen to him is what's really scary.

Jim in Arizona   January 26th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

Either CitiGroup Execs are clueless or don't care. (I think the latter!)Buying a new corporate jet is very bad PR! Doesn't make sense. One can always lease a jet within an hour or so from many aircraft leasing/charter companies! Ones that would love to have the business nowadays.

Dear Rick,

Limbaugh is a hateful fanatic like Hamas officials. He hate americans who do not share his views. Hitler had the same kind of mood.

He hate Obama and he is one of the racist, who want the president to fail. The constitution of the USA is invalid for Mr Limbaugh. He wants his views to be a constitution to others.

Marcel

Ann-Marie   January 26th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

My comment is about what "Rush Limbaugh" said about that he want "Liberalism" to fail. I am a single mother living in Canada I believe that he is wrong for saying that. The US and the rest of the world want things to get better and if it takes an African American to do the job then so be it. If he thinks that he could do a better job then why did he not run for office????? Just be repectful of the Obama's party and let them do their job to make things better for one and all it that too much to ask without all the personal attacks, the American public voted so accept it.

Nidia   January 26th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

Hi Rick. Fan of yours since your Miami days. I am cubanamerican who has been a Republican since 1979. I voted for John McCain. but unlike Rush, I am american enough, and human enough to pray for our president's success in helping America stop hurting, and start healing. Shame on him on making such a selfish remark.

Hi Rick
Thank you for not changing you style. Since the Inauguration the anchors on CNN have become increasingly arrogant .Its like they are bucking for position .For instance ,they are the only station still whining about the do over snub, every chance they get .I wish they would report on minute to minute issues and stop harping on the entitlement they felt was denied ,so petty.
Thanks for calling out the radio clown Rush .If a public person of color had make a statement like that ,they would have been branded Un -American .Whatever context he meant it in he needs to labeled, until he clearly chooses his stance .Please don't give him a pass .He's sending a message to all like mind followers ,it okay to dam the President of color to hell.
Please continue to speak truth to power for the people .I love you and depend on your talents.

Hello Rick,
this issue is the hottest topic all over the news channels since these big corrupted comapanies have been bailed out. I was against of bailing out any of these companies before and i am still against it now. But ofcourse who is there to listen? Nothing has been changed for the citizens who suffer and are still suffering the most , people are still losing jobs and their houses. My question is WHAT NEXT? What can you, all the authorities, and the anchors like yourself who speak on behalf of all the U.S citizens do to bring the people justice? What can be done to make all those companies give back all that money that was stolen from US with the excuse of bailing out this nation's citizens? Who will bring back the justice?
Thank You So Much

is'nt this about par for the course. these banks have nearly broke the american taxpayer with their high interest, and forclosing on their homes. maybe justice will be served if the new corporate jet with all the ceo's on it will just fall from the sky

Ryan   January 26th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Hey Mike Pearce whether you like it or not Rush is a private citezen that can say whatever he wants. His popularity is driven by the large conservative listening audiece, not by media reporting. As for bringing up his previous drug addiction, that is low. He opened up to his listeners about his addiction and fought and beat it. Everyone has skeletons in their past but when they open up and committ to beating them it is sad when others continue to use them to try to demonize the individual.

viktor popp   January 26th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

I did see the Hannity- Limbaugh inteview. You did take Rush's comment out of context. He said,if Obama introduces us to a SOCIALIST system,if he subscribes to SOCIALISM,yes he wants him to fail. Why would I want him to succeed,if he abandons our capitalist
principles, principles this country was founded on.This is what Rush
said[maybe not his exact words, but very close to it]mentioning socialist
and socialism several times, what you Rick completely ignored. You and your family, fled from Cuba, the workers socialist paradise. So did I
when I left the Austrian socialists behind and found my new home in the US.I'em forever grateful for the opportunity and would never talk
to this Austrian UN rep.on torture [I forgot his name already] with a happy smiling face like yours, wanting to prosecute pres.Bush and his administration. This socialist jerk would never indict Putin, Mugabe, Chavez or Castro.Your biased against the conservatives and embrace
the liberals.Don't call yourself a journalist, you're not. You're a commentator and say so.Schame on anybody that leaves his birthplace, then tries to implement the bad things that made him leave
it,in his new home.

Rush Limbaugh has many followers. Hitler had many followers, as did Ted Haggard, Jim Baker,
Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Jones, Mark Foley, James Traficant, Rod Blagojevich and so many others.
Didn’t Rush say “People who use drugs should be locked up, and the key thrown away”?
Oxyconty is a drug! He calls it pain medication. Rush Limbaugh belongs to a group of many
other American hippocrytes. The only ones who are more embarrassing to the United States,
than Rush Limbaugh, are his 20 million followers. You don’t have to be a great human being to
have a lot of followers. Even many nutty hyppocrytical-screwballs have followers. Rush
Limbaugh falls into that category!

Stimulus for who,not the disable or the people on social security.
The President seems to have forgotten the retirement community and the ones receiving social security on a fixed income, whose boosting their already dwindling life from the fallout of all the economical problems. Especially with the cost going upwards. Where are they going to get any help?

Lee Figueras   January 26th, 2009 5:13 pm ET

Yesterday your commentary on Rush Lembaugh was not cirtical enough. Rush engages his nouth before he engages his brain. He did the same thing on ESPN on his comments regarding Donovan McNabb the Eagles Quarter back. I fyou don;t know this Rush is raciall biased. He has incited the KKK to go to New JErsey and burn a cross on the lawn of the new elected black mayor of the mostly white city. I think that the public shopuld find out who his sponsors are and boycott them through the country, and I think that would shout his big racist mouth. He is speaking out against the American people when he states that he want Obama to fail. If he fails the country fails.

Why is it so hard to figure out the bailout? The population of the US is 305 Millon people. Assume that all are 18 years old and older make less than $125,000/yr.or less. The government gives each citizen $1 Millon and gets back one third in taxes and debts are paid. Both parties are winners!!!!!!. You do the math from the $750 Billon bailout.

darlene tafoya   January 26th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

This plane deal is like giving a handout to your neighbor because they say they can't afford to feed their kids....then you see them eating at Red Lobster on a daily basis. There seems to be no end to the greed, deceit and lack of accountability among the big corporations...or even big government. As taxpayers paying the bill for these idiot decisions, we deserve and should demand accountability for every dollar that goes their way.

Niraj Chandra, Canada   January 26th, 2009 5:55 pm ET

There is a simple solution to the bail-out mess that no one has talked about.

Whenever the government bails out a company or an institution, it should put a government representative on the Board of Directors. The money should flow only as long as the government is happy with its proper use.

This will stop banks from buying jets with bail-out money.

Doug in New Mexico   January 26th, 2009 6:03 pm ET

There are a lot of executives who should be losing there jobs!!!!!!

Anna   January 26th, 2009 6:11 pm ET

Citigroup's latest appalling behavior disgusts me. After begging us for money to keep them afloat and receiving it, they are going to flaunt it by buying a private jet?! Many Americans are losing their jobs, homes and cars. They should be forced to immediately repay all their bailout money because clearly they didn't need it. As a 24-year-old almost college grad, I am scared of the country my generation is inheriting. It is one in which the rich can do whatever they want with no consequences, but all it takes to put a poor person in jail is one dime bag of pot.

Rick, I love your show! I watch you every day on my lunch break at work. As an aspiring journalist, you are a great role model for me. Keep up the good reporting!

curious1966   January 26th, 2009 6:27 pm ET

Hello Rick

50 Million Dollars for 12 people to sit in a "plush" leather seat. I am assuming that cavier is served in gold bowls with diamond studded cutlery too.
Imagine how many homes could be built, how many homeless people could be fed and clothed, how many jobs could be created....the list goes on and on
With 50 MILLION DOLLARS....
Instead, it is so some fat ass executive doesn't have to fly economy class.
Something is fundamentally wrong with these companies that think they can get away with outrageous purchases like this, while millions are losing their homes and jobs.
I hope those executives can sleep soundly on the plane, on those "plush" leather seats the next time they fly on it.

curious one

Kathy Prudden   January 26th, 2009 7:13 pm ET

I think it is disgusting. Instead of any more bail out money going to Banks the Government should issue 25 to 50 thousand dollars to each taxpayer to pay off their credit cards and loans. The money would trickle down to the banks and actually do something for the people that need the help.
I also think it an outrageous injustice to tax people on their unemployment benefits. How ludicrist to tax someone that lost their job, their benefits and stability for the back up security they paid for.
Kathy

Lynn Radcliffe   January 26th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

They have the nerve to buy a plane with my tax dollars and then raise the interest on my credit card to 15% from 5% "because of the economy". That's a lot of nerve. If the economy is so bad how about leaving interest rates where they are so people can pay them off get out of debt. Now I won't even use my card. They have lost a good customer who was never late.

Hello Rick

I've followed your career since Miami, and I always wanted to say that CNN really looks good on you. Keep up the good work.

I'm so dis-appointed to hear how the hard tax earned dollar is being spent. It's hard enough for the American to keep heads above water, and to hear this just gets my goat.

sali   January 26th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

The need by CitiCorp for the $50MM plane with its leather seats encapsulates the thinking and grandiose spending out of the parameters of what a bank should be spending it's money on. Last few years along with the last administration has been all about watching the poor get poorer and the rich going over the top. the doing away with the middle class who now is being squeezed to pay with their taxes for all the excess that we didn't get to share in or want... that we were further juiced out of our 401k's and saving and spending abilities by these institutions... that have no feeling for the people that they keep draining so they have just enough to give us another kick in the teeth.. as a lesson to the rich... President Obama should make them take the loss and pay the fines for this plane... Enough is enough already.... but this is too much!

Patricia Wallis from Utah   January 27th, 2009 1:51 am ET

Hi Rick, I do believe Rush needs to go into retirement. Or maybe
we need to make a referral to Protective Services for the Aged.
You know since Rush has come back to work after his drug problems
it appears Rush has become more irratioal, delirious, not well.
What you think Rick? Rush appears to be a very sick man dreaming
of his past. Wanting his old listener back, his hair, and his brain!!!
Hey Rick I'm enjoying your airtime but I miss your show. I have
followed you for about 2 or so yrs.

Becky Malczewski   January 27th, 2009 7:23 am ET

Hi Rick,

Thinking of the jet made me wonder... Have any payments been made of the original $350 Billion by any company. If Citi can buy a jet shouldn't they be able to pay something on the loan.

Jim Nicely   January 27th, 2009 9:32 am ET

You folks fascinate me, Here we have an ex-president who was fully aware that nuclear weapons were being employed on the battlefield in Iraq. This was and is strictly against the Geneva accords. It has created a problem where the ramifications will be felt for a million years, both on our side and theirs, yet you want to involve folks in banter on an issue that will be over in a hundred.
All I can say is, the Milityary Industrial complex hasn't got pockets deep enough to buy you and your network out of culpability when you stand before the Great White Throne. No intercessorial entity can give you enough penance to dissuade your end.

Kent Allen   January 27th, 2009 10:10 am ET

Richard Fuld sells his FL home to his wife for $100.00. In the late 80's, former baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn flees from Ridgewood, NJ to FL in the middle of the night to likewise shelter the asset. Presumably, both did nothing wrong, its a coincidence, that's all. Is this country great, or what?

Kent Allen   January 27th, 2009 10:19 am ET

Citi buys a jet so 12 of their "high flyers" can be on the same flight...and what if the jet goes down? No, the correct answer is NOT what you are thinking to yourself. When US Airways Flt. 1549 went down in the Hudson, Bank of America had 23 employees on the same flight. It was reported that those 23 were in NYC for merger talks...and what if all 23 of them failed to survive? No, the correct answer would NOT have been what you are thinking to yourself. Banks tell borrowers to not take risks, spread the risk, but appearantly are so above it all, they don't practice what they preach.

cjstewart   January 27th, 2009 10:31 am ET

just another american rip off. What I am angry about is the lack of support for the contraception package in the stimulus package...perhaps not a job creator...but mad at dems for not saying it like it is.....in times of economic downturn, cutting costs for the poor may lead to 1) an increase of unwanted pregancies!!!....thus abortions and even worse more kids on the states and fed dole. hasn't anyone heard of an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure????

Heather Richmond   January 27th, 2009 10:36 am ET

I was in the Carribbean last week on a cruise ship. They have CNN on their TV set. One night I was shocked to find this anchor who apparently has spent a lot of time learning your manerisms, speach, and dresses like you. He also has is hair combed the same way and even talks like you.
My husband thought it was, but I corrected him. I do not think it is right that CNN would want to have someone on their show that is apprently stealing your identity on TV. The other thing is, that if he screws up you could end up getting the blame as the two of you are so similar.
I hope you check into this, as I really enjoy your show and i hate to see this.

Chris from Savannah   January 27th, 2009 11:22 am ET

I seriously doubt, that all $50 mil was due upon delivery. When do you order something and not put down a significant deposit? I am afraid all we have done is cost Citbank more money, and stuck Falcon Jet with $50 mil airplane with no home, and by the way, a good portion of the plane is produced in the good ol' USA. If you report a story, how about reporting all of it!

Deja   January 27th, 2009 11:30 am ET

Why on earth are they buying a jet? wern't they just complaining about being broke... Well They won't be getting any of my money

Tamara   January 27th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

I am a Obama supporter, but I am disappointed in the fact that he has not addressed the housing and foreclosure issue. How about some executive orders on this. People are not going to spend money if they don't know if they will have a place to live. There is no mention of a resolution in the stimulus package. CNN you need to call Obama on this as he made the foreclosure issue his prime focus during his campaign.

Maybe you remember all the comments starting in the 1960s to the 1990's about how we were mortgaging future generations by various spending programs and raiding social security etc. No mind, the pundits said time will take care of it. Well, time's up! The bill has come due and the generations that had their future mortgaged voted big time in the last election. They voted in the first possible president that wasn't a boomer. So it's up to the rest of us (yes, I'm a boomer) to get used to the fact that the political landscape has changed. And as soon as the old guard of both parties in the Congress get used to that fact the sooner we'll get past all this. Time to smack down the old ways and out dated companies. Game Over! Get over it!

This is what we get for giving the money to the banks. What would have happened if the federal government gave the $700 billion bailout to the taxpayers. What a big stimulus check that would be.Are they afraid that we would pay off credit cards, buy a new car or truck, make our house payments or pay our house off. What a great idea, start from the bottom it will go up.We have already tried many times the trickle down effect , it does not work.

If they want to pull this sort of thing, fine. Then they should be permanently blacklisted for receiving aid from any government agency, and barred from ever bidding on or receiving any government contract. State, federal, local, whatever.

Diane Dutcher   January 27th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

It would be humorous if not so important:Obama tells republicans "I won" and he'll do it his way because they're the minority, YET, we are only minority shareholders in Citi and he tells them their buying a jet is UNACCEPTABLE and they're supposed to listen and obey.

Jason   January 27th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

He should tell corprate what to do..especially citi bank because, with the prevous bail out money going to them, meaning us as american people invested in that company and instead of using that money to bring their company from out of the depths they buy a plane this shows poor practices by citi bank and what else are they doing with our money

Ivy   January 27th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

This is a big slap in the face to American taxpayers, and you, Rick, questioned the fact that President Obama spoke up and said this was unacceptable. Well I think President Obama has absolutely done the right thing! He was elected by the People, and it's the People's tax money Citibank is flushing down the toilet! I expect him to speak up about this, and take steps to make sure our money isn't wasted. This, and Merril Lynch's former-CEO's redecorating spree is ridiculous and shows they didn't deserve the bailout money.

susan diamond   January 27th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Rick, your written comment RE: the citibank jet is on the money but your on air comment that our government holding them accountable is a form of communism–preposterous. This isn't corporate need just another example of CEO GREED

yose   January 27th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

This is just ridiculous. What are these companies thinking. I say we just let these companies fail. AIG and now Citigroup are making many citizens angry. This needs to stop, they can not use OUR money for luxuries like this plane. They were supposed to use OUR money to keep their business running.

Kevin   January 27th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

Once you received Gov't Money which I do believe is TAXPAYERS,dollars you can't cry , you need to be held accountabilty of it. This is why we are this postion now.

PRIVATE JET HAHAHAHAHA. NOT

Hanner   January 27th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Rick, I like your show. Please put this on for me because, all those college grads in office think that their solutions are the ones that will solve the economic crisis. To solve this crisis, the Federal Government need to drop the interest rates on mortgages down to 2%, this will allow families to purchase houses and it will definitely stimulate the economy, have strict rules. These banks borrow money at ZERO interest rates, so why can't they give back a little. All the CEO's are monsters.

Claudia, Hawaii   January 27th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

Rick, your contempt for taxpayers should be dialed back a notch if you want to keep an audience.

Expecting ordinary people to bail out banks bad loans while also paying for the fatcats perks and private jets as part of their "usual business" is just not going to happen. They dug the hole, let them ride coach with the rest of us or pay their own way.

Claudia, Hawaii   January 27th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

I've noticed your comments on air are sometimes quite different from what's in your "blog." In fact they are contradictory....

So who writes your blog?

Hanner   January 27th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

The federal government need to freeze all the assets of CEO's and take the money back, make them sell all their vacation homes, sell the jewelry that they bought for their mistresses and all that other stuff to bail their own companies out. Thain, the so-called CEO is money hungry. They let their companies down, so they need to pick them up. Greed is going to ruin this country.

the govt should not bail these companies out as a " LOAN " if the govt wants to bail america out then do so – let every american with debt be allowed a DO-OVER – wipe student loans and credit debts, bad mortgages clean by awarding the amount needed to the american worker in a fashion that it can only be used for those purposes PLAIN & SIMPLE then the loans are paid to the creditors – this in turn allows the american worker to start clean with a fresh perspective on there finances & not to make those mistakes again – and that also puts all that money into the corporations giving them the influx they needed turning the economy around

- then the govt needs to go after companies that are immoral and decietful in therefinancial practices harder,

we need to become less dependent on OIL and move into alternative fuels and technologies –

- We also need to bring business back to America to provide jobs and do this not with tax cuts but with legislative force – we should not be allowing other countries to do our labor ( from factory work or office work ) – sure we could allow 10% to be in a foriegn country but personally i feel 90% of every american company needs to have its workforce in AMERICA building American products FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD to buy, we should not be the country that is buying everything. im not saying not to keep foriegn economic relations but to change the focus of where the american product should be made and distributed from.

If WE THE PEOPLE sit still for this we need to learn to bend over, because we will be getting the screwing we deserve!

Barbara Johnson   January 27th, 2009 3:58 pm ET

Rick, I disapprove of immoral and irresponsible people airing their dirty laundry in public or on TV. Let's raise the standard of how we present news. You are able to do this, as I have witnessed your presentations and commentary many times. But too often you fall prey to the sleezy low-level all too common commentary. Let us behave as godly decent people and look for the best in our new President Barack Obama. Give him an opportunity to govern, especially since he has interited a mine shaft of gross irresponsibility and mismanagement on the part of Wall Street, the Banking Industry and Government. He needs of grace and wisdom of God to be able to deal effectively with this elephant. Let us be patient and pray to God for him. Thank you for hearing my comments.

barbara   January 27th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

you have to ask yourself were these people trying to get one last hand out from godfather bush it is obvious that these companies where crying wolf this series of on events cant be helpful to the new and alot better organize stimulus plan

Sherry, N. Calif.   January 27th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

This shows lack of trust and un-accountablity that the banks have with the American people and the Government (us) who gave them the money in the first place. Last two days I have been at B of A- Empty-Gee, I wonder why!! I do not trust them at all. The crooks are at the top-Cream? Full of Fat? I think so. All the one's that caused this problem are still in their jobs. The honest hard-working people are no longer even at the bottom they are gone with wind by the requests of the Crooks. They are stealing from the one's they cannot fire with higher interest rates and not loaning money but hoarding it. I don't like the idea of Govern. stepping into the Financial Institutions but they should. Someone has to hold them accountable until they get their act togetehr w/o the former CEO's. How about the FBI or CIA? Get in there with some forensic accountants and clean them up.

K. Sullivan   January 27th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

They did not have to file bankruptcy or be bought up by another company to save them for their poor job performance. They received emergency funding from the American taxpayer labeled a "Bailout" for the purpose of correcting their past poor performance decisions..

It is our money distributed to them and they are continuing with "poor job performance". We, the American taxpayer ultimately are the judging party. Regardless what our representatives allow, we have the power to override those representatives. Not re-electing them is not where our only power is but simply another option we can exercise. Not to long ago some threw tea in the harbor for many different reasons.

We should be allowed to "ASK FOR OUR FUNDS BACK".

If this situation was a small business or a household that was receiving this same type of emergency financial assistance they would be strictly monitored, have to account for every penny they spent and if it was spent for other purposes other then what it was given for, the monies would have to be returned and the cash cow would be shut off.

If you were on welfare, you wouldn't be expected to waste those funds or to buy illegal items, regardless what they were. Those funds would be terminated immediately if spent for the wrong purposes and restitution would be expected accordingly.

This nonsense that they were not regulated on spending those "bailout funds" is simply pure nonsense. I do not believe that a person receiving emergency financial assistance that spent that assistance on remodeling their living room would collect a penny more and would and should be required to immediately pay back any monies received.

I also do not believe that it states anywhere that a person receiving emergency financial assistance from the government to keep their heads above water, that they can not spend those monies on remodeling their living room.

This situation is total nonsense. Not one person of high integrity and character has simply asked for our funds back ,so that we, the American taxpayer, can salvage another company that deserves our assistance.

One American at a time we are losing this country.

Dennis Spinelli (California)   January 27th, 2009 4:31 pm ET

The stimulus plan is just a welfare plan. They should concentrate in giving small buss, more tax incentives and bail out all home owners that are loosing their homes. and create more long term jobs.not a quick fix for a long time problem.

John Castelot   January 27th, 2009 4:37 pm ET

I don't usually watch CNN. I happened to be stuck in line at a dunkin donuts and caught part of your broadcast. I immediately recalled why I don't watch CNN.
What a throw up fest. Your dripping enthusiasm for change is probably right up there with Chris Matthews". The fact that America doesn't consider Islam and Arabs our enemy is not change or new. If you are an enemy, you have an enemy. They chose us. When they choose us again and a few thousand Americans die, I hope I'll get a chance to hear your admission that you were wrong.
I'm more convinced now that I did the right thing when I dumped my tv and chose to be a little more selective with my news gathering tools. Sorry I happened to catch your broadcast. I'm certain all the major media broadcasts are exactly like yours so I just happened to be stuck with yours at the time.

Iman   January 27th, 2009 6:02 pm ET

Nice to know that's what they do with their money. I can see them sitting down thinking, "Hmm should we buy the jet or try to rebuild and regroup and maybe DO something PRODUCTIVE with this money??" Despicable!

allen maes   January 27th, 2009 7:05 pm ET

Hey! Hello! Anybody home? I thought I saw the lights on, . . .my mistake.
In the private sector and as part of a management team for a company, the one that hires employees must do some sort of screening of that potential employee/s, (for the good of the company and that practice would be common knowledge). Yes?
Who and heck is screening where America's millions and billions are going and what their intentions are with what they are doing with our children's futures?!

Rick,

Considering the economy, it wouldn't hurt the top executive's butts to travel in a regular flight as long as they reach their destination. It is unneccessary to spend so much and if they're that desperate, they can travel in first class. It is also a possibilty to create new jobs with that money.

Mister B.   January 27th, 2009 7:33 pm ET

Looks like that "slap up side the head" (that Citi Group got today from the new administration that made them change their mind about buying that jet) may have woke them up. With any luck the same is true for the rest of those cluless ones on Wall Sreet.

The government saya they do not know what the banks are doing with the taxpapers money given to them. All the government needsm to do is send in the federal bank examiners, and they should be able to tel you how much

william whatts   January 28th, 2009 11:08 am ET

I am very confused.Than again i am not the sharpest knife in the draw. Our tax dollars are being used to bail out these financial institutions. The government is giving these banks billions and billions of tax dollars to help them through the current mortgage crisis. The banks get the bailout money in addition they get to keep the homes that have been foreclosed on and the homes that are in the process of being foreclosed on, in addition they get to keep the money the homeowner paid into the mortgage for however long they carried the home. The homeowner is now homeless. How is this helping our middle class? How are we helping these folks that are losing their homes? This is helping our economy how? The banks get bailed out and your average working class american gets put out. I dont understand......

Katherine   January 28th, 2009 11:30 am ET

I am so furious about this. We are currently paying 12.5% interest on a mortgage with that group. It has been well over 2 years we have been trying to modify this mortgage to prevent forclosure and it takes forever to get past INDIA! AND those scumbags like the leather!! $50 mill on a jet and I can't get $75,000 remortgaged! This really sucks, prevent forclosure? Ya right!!! Mr. President....go get em!!!

Katie   January 28th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

My God the republicans have some kahunas! They stand before the mics and talk about spending too much money! Its because of their last eight years of all time record spending, no regulation, and criminal war that got us into this mess!

k freeman   January 28th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Want to put more money into the pockets of the employers and the working public....do not collect income taxes for the next 9 months...this would be a wonderful stimulus to the economy without the government having to shell out money. The only reason why the government would not agree to this would be power image.

john e. ortolani   January 28th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

Stimulus package loaded with pork. Where's my assistance? Loss of business, facing forclosure, can't find work. I hope Jesus comes soon, cause I'm ready to go push a shopping cart. Thank you Corporate America. You too, Sacramento.

Kathy Austin   January 28th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Rick,

My question on this is as follows the government is handing out money to companies who in turn buy needless items. I am on social security at the age of 41 due to circumstances beyond my control, now I am going back to college to retrain for another field, but I have worked since the age of 16 paying taxes, why should I not get a stimulus check just because the ability to work was taken from me and I cant work right now? Why cant the powers to be understand that everybody needs a stimulus check to survive, we can bail out all these companies but if you have people losing homes, jobs, cars and cant put food on the table then what good does it do to bail them out when no one will be able to afford to buy from them? I dont see this as good for America.

Jim   January 28th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

If we want more JOBS, why not increase Tarriffs on foreign goods. That would induce Americans to open Plants and Produce...

craig monteilh   January 28th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

Rick, I'm not too familiar with blogs. However, I believe I can shed some light on the Somali young men leaving the U.S. and returning as jihadists. I participated in a year long F.B.I. operation in Irvine, CA. It was actually in the L.A. Times.

Kunle Adeleye   January 28th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

People that are freely fed hardly appreciate the gravity of famine. The guys at CITI and the likes have been around for a while and have accumulated so much, they are under the euphoria that the tap never gets shot. They simply do not understand what all the hullabaloo about recession is, they are more -or- less on Fantacy Island. Hopefully, one day they will land on Real Estate if those who pay the piper dictate the tune.

Richard D. LeCour   January 29th, 2009 1:16 am ET

Citigroup gets $45 billion of public money, and I get two letters from Citi informing me that they are raising my APR to 19.99% on my two Citibank credit card accounts. I've never paid late, keep a modest balance, and have excellent credit - I can't imagine what the new rates are for people with bad credit! And if I miss a payment the rate in increased to 29.99%! That's having your cake, eating it, and adding a scoop of ice cream and an entire apple pie on the side. The Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act was enacted during times of inflation. In this time of recession, rate limits should no longer be exempted. The government needs to revisit usury laws and tighten up regulation of credit card companies.

Katherine   January 29th, 2009 10:00 am ET

Citigroup has me so frustrated at this time that I am ready to say to hell with my credit and do a deed in lieu. It's like they want to see us go into forclosure. Haven't missed a payment, 12.5% interest, and they like the leather on their $50 million dollar jet. What the hell is up with that???

Ben   January 29th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

These big banks are just like little kids that get $10. They spend it on something and are back the next day wanting another $10. Except thir stupid spending is in the millions. They have no sence of accountability. They have no problem spending money on stupid stuff as long as it isn't their money and they know they can get more.

Rose   January 29th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

I called the credit card company asking for help because I did not have the money. The person on the other end of the phone said they Needed the $165.00. I told her again, that I did not have the money or I would have paid it. That was why I called her. she said she was trying to help me but she needed that money, I had no money to give her. Next day she called me back, said it was for collection of debt. I told her again I had no money that if I had it I would have paid it in the first place. I was late and going on the second missed payment. I told her about all the info I hear on TV and that it was just a bunch of bull, go ahead and send it to a collection agency, at least that would stop the late charges and now over the limit charges. I could not give her money I did not have. She did not offer to reduce and % and I was too upset to ask. Then they send me a letter saying I could get my account in good standing just send them $340 something. Once again, if I did not have $86.00 how would I have the later figure. I am on a fixed income and only get paid on the 3rd of each month. NO ONE IS HELPING THE LITTLE PEOPLE OR THE SMALL BUSINESSES. My mortgage people could not help me either lower my mortgage because it is not behind, it comes out of the bank automatically so I do the best I can with what is left. I have annoying calls all day long. So I am not in forclosue so I don't need help, well, are those people in forclosure because they did not pay their bills and spent mortgage money on junk and vacations and big boy toys. There is no help, it is all a big joke.

Tom   January 30th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

As far as the CEO's, and upper Managers, I think the Justice Dept. should step in, along with all the power of the Government, and freeze all of their personal assets, sell them and pay the money they took, back to the citizens of this country. It sure seems to me that they took the money under, at the very least, very unscrupulous circumstances.

Suzanne   January 30th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

Rich people & corporations always want MORE. We regular people just want enough.

jennifer   January 31st, 2009 12:09 pm ET

My Citibank APR was recently increased too, despite a good credit history. They probably were planning on using the extra cash for their luxury jet and its accompanying costs. Of course, I knew it was going to happen, but what could I do but opt out and lose good credit history. I wrote my congressman, Barney Frank, who happens to be the Chairman of the Financial Service Committee, as well as, my state senators. Clearly, Citi is not using the billions in TARP funds they received to help their customers. The gluttonous behavior of these industry leaders must stop; they lack a depth of social awareness and an appropriate moral compass to be worthy of receiving taxpayer money. Please write your representatives!

We all agree that something needs to be done about the Wall Street knucklehead pirates. But caping their salaries doesn't seem painful enough. So here comes my "wonderful" idea. Let's tie their total compensation as follows:

Half tied to the business performance.
The other half tied to what in HR is called a 360 degree performance review. In this style of review you're rated by your bosses, your peers, and your subordinates. Cool eh!

Joseph Fashano   February 2nd, 2009 3:48 pm ET

Lets face the bailout was brought about the lobbyists who petitioned their clients (banks and Wall Street's friends). No strings were attached nor over sight. The Secretay of the Treasury was formerly with Goldman, Sachs. Goldman wanted to benefit by it so he approved that they can become a bank to come to the feeding pool with the others. He will be well provided for once he is out of office for favors done. Let us not white wash the bailout package it was a scam on the American taxpayers who were all opposed to it. Who in government represents the middle class?
