Rick talks with citizens of Gaza and southern Israel

We've heard from lots of reporters, spokespeople and analysts, but here's real people living amid the conflict in and around Gaza telling us what it's really like.

We have recently learned that Hamas leaders are eager to send their children on suicide missions to kill Israelis. Maybe killing them before they kill themselves AND Israeli children is the best thing to do.

david   January 2nd, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Mr. Brezinski, where were you when Hamas was lobbing rockets into Israel? Hamas, (Iranian proxy), wants to destroy Israel. Do you not get it. The big losers are the Palestinian children. Get rid of their irrational, despicable leadership, then see the area thrive.

USA1   January 2nd, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Most politicians and news networks fail to mention that it is not Hamas or the Palestinians who started all this madness… It is not the primitive fire work that is being launched that caused all this… It is the Zionist blockade and suffocation of Gaza and the civilian of Gaza for the last six months when there were no “so called rockets” being launched. It was slow paced Holocaust and no one in the international community could hear the cry of the people of Gaza till they started to launch these fireworks.

nikos109   January 2nd, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Wasn't the hammas goverment elected free and democraticly by the palestinian people? Why we call them terorists, when they fight for their land? If it is like this, with the same token our forfather George Washington was a terrorist for the British. Right?

fatoumata   January 2nd, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Hi rick, i always watch your program. About the Israeli, Palestinians conflict i think the us should just stop taking sides and do something for humanity.

chris from San Francisco   January 2nd, 2009 3:33 pm ET

How is firing rockets into Israel daily justify Hama's demands for peace? And ask Hamas if they even recognize Israel?

Ashley   January 2nd, 2009 3:34 pm ET

With all the rockets we're hearing about, Israel had only 7 casualties over the last TWO Years. In less than a week 400 in Gaza are killed, and over 2000 are injured? Speak of the use of brutal force!!!!!
We need to hear openion from the palestinian side, e.g. Hannan Ashrawy...Thyanx Rick, Good job

Lori Spadaro   January 2nd, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Sorry to say this, but it's the MEN in leadership roles who rationalize the intelligence of WAR. Noone who is living in the middle east wants a war. Someone has to back down – but EGO prevents it. Very frustrating!

Christ Michael   January 2nd, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Ehud Olmert hath denied the Oneness, refuted the Unknown, and disobeyed a Messenger of God, and he shall be Hung over the Fire come Judgment – for he was Given today to seek for brotherhood with Muslims and see to the needs of the poor and the needy in Palestine, and he did fail himself miserably in that. Wake up, people; the kingdom of God is at hand, and a Day of Judgment is nigh upon thee.

Dr. M. D.   January 2nd, 2009 3:36 pm ET

It is truly a sad situation.
The world is effected by this crisis and should not stand passive.
Israel doesn't want peace; otherwise they would have honored recent settelement agreements (cause of rocket attacks on inocent civilians by Hamas).

Joseph P   January 2nd, 2009 3:41 pm ET

Rick, you are the only anchor who's attempting to give a fair and balanced view of the veritable halocaust in Gaza. We need to think of the Palestinian situation with honesty and clarity. Gaza is a virtual prison, all because on American dishonesty in siding with and supplying Israel with political and material support to maintain the status quo in Gaza – 1.5 million imprisoned people. Where's the justice?

Marie   January 2nd, 2009 3:46 pm ET

This is a sad day in the world when the Israel government and the Bush administration can pretend that what is happening is the fault of the Palestinians.
Israel attacked the Palestinians FIRST as they always do to avoid peace... They regard any person who is not a Jew as worthless. They want sympathy for the WW11 Holocaust but they are committing genocide a holocaust against the Palestinians which with the help of the US news media will send in tanks and bull doze over every building and man, woman, and child to hide the truth. They did this in Jenine but the world knows and God knows.

Dr. Seth Johnston   January 2nd, 2009 3:49 pm ET

ctually, your job is to report the news without the "gush" factor you add to everything.

Rodsan   January 2nd, 2009 3:49 pm ET

Rick, you're the only one, and you did a good job mentioning the Israeli operation killing 6 that broke the cease fire before rockets were fired. Also, the media should spend more time mentioning / explaining the siege / blockade of Gaza that has lasted 2 years. The US (media and incoming government) needs to tackle the problem in a more even-handed way.

Tom   January 2nd, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Both sides have done wrong...lets however never forget how The Palestinian people had there land taken from them and get treated like animals..how do you expect them to act. America always blindly backs Israel no matter what they do...both sides have terrorist...Israel should not kill 20 people to get 1 person in a building..they are wrong!

Pank Defendorf   January 2nd, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Is it possible both sides in the Gaza/Israeli situation get their hands on way too much U.S. Aid $?

BISI   January 2nd, 2009 3:50 pm ET

It really is interesting that no one remembers that this whole Palestinian problem started 40 years ago when Isreal took over most of the Palestinians land. So why is it so appalling that they have been fighting for their land that their ancestors have held for generations? How Does humanity think they feel?

Eli G.   January 2nd, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Hammas purposly shoots rockets from within civilian areas which in turn causes Israel to bomb these places (btw they do give pre-warnings which puts them in some danger).
Israel is not resposible AT ALL for ANY civilian casualties

Esam   January 2nd, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Hi Rick,

You have been doing some great reporting on this conflict !!

I can tell you who is wrong !! Picture this. If you were living in your home with your family and someone comes in your home holding a gun and takes over your home and kills your family. Just think about it.

Stewart Brown   January 2nd, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Rick,
I really enjoy your show. I must comment on the latest conflict between Isreal & Gaza
I really don't understand, How everyone seems to defend Isreal, like they can do no wrong !

We need to step back and take a real good look at this ! Isreal always wants the world to view their country as the victim, they are not as innocent as they want us to believe.

They started this, let them finish it themselves.

You can't be the victim and the bully at the same time.

I think I can speak for most Americans, Let Isreal deal with the problems that they seem to initiate themselves, and let the United States mind it's own business for once !

rafi   January 2nd, 2009 3:53 pm ET

Who's right and who's wrong? If that's what they're trying to figure out then there's a chance that this thing will go on for another 40 years. I've tried that in my marriage and we still haven't figured it out, we just found a way to compromise. Please try some compassion for the sake of humanity.

Marc Yablonka   January 2nd, 2009 3:53 pm ET

The problem is that time after time after time again, the western media don't do what you suggest Rick. It always blames Israel as the aggressor and fails to point out that those who would be Israel's enemies are the much more often than not original perpetrators of the terrorism that has befallen her. No other country in the world has the patience of Israel and her citizens. And no other country in the world would stand idly by when a bordering country broke a cease fire by lobbing 300 rockets into its territory without responding.

Joseph P   January 2nd, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Rick, what is so complex about an invader seeking to take control of your inheritance and domicile, defiling it with colonization, and corrupting it by raping it and denying its inheritors of its most precious resource – people and land? At least the Palestinians – unlike the "natives" elsewhere in histroy – have the audacity to try and repel the invaders. Those of us who claim to love humanity must now take stalk of the new genocide unfolding before our eyes and speak up against it.

Dennis Hand   January 2nd, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Rick, I don't understand your meaning of a complex situation. Hamas lobbed bombs into Israel and they are simply retaliating. I commend them for this. When are people going to open their eyes? The people in Gaza need to blame Hamas for bringing this onto them. If they hadn't then we wouldn't be talking about this right now.

Frank Thompson   January 2nd, 2009 3:57 pm ET

You lost me with the picture of the radical that was killed. The press, including you, have shown pictures that evoke emotion without giving any real background explanation, and certainly without alternative insight. Why now? Seems a bit hypocritical. If this was done more, it would be great!

Frank Thompson   January 2nd, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Another comment, compliment. In total, you have provided the most intelligent guests and discussion on this important topic of Hamas and Israel. Your questions have been largely objectively with regards to seeking truth. Thank you for that!

sf   January 2nd, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Israel left gaza in 2005 since then the hamas got alot of wepones to kill israelis, and they want to distoryed israel...we have to proteced our selfs they live to kill israelies...

Pedro E. V.   January 2nd, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Right on Rick! Please, we need BOTH sides on this horrible situation... finally there is some truth coming out concerning this mess! Don't get me wrong, a have dear friends from both sides, but this cannot ever be seen as a one-sided reality... THANKS FOR THE FAIR AND BALANCED VIEW!!
May God, the Creator of all [Muslims, Jewish, Christians--even atheists!] have mercy & pour grace on countless innocents suffering consequence of fanaticism...

Ceasar Trinidad   January 2nd, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Rick,
There is no right or wrong when innocent people are dying, but I have to say this the leaders of Hamas have to be accountable for their own people's deaths. They should be removed from power. I believe this is the only way. If it means going into Gaza and taking them out then so be it.

swb   January 2nd, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Who among us would allow rockets fall in our back yards indefinitely without a response. This was deliberate; designed to elicite a response, and it worked. Be careful what you ask for.

Pedro E. V.   January 2nd, 2009 4:00 pm ET

[I MEANT "I HAVE FRIENDS FROM BOTH SIDES..."]

Different Perspective   January 2nd, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Just heard the comments from the Lt. General about the necessity of war e.g. war of independence. India was occupied by the same occupier that once occupied America and independence came to India without a war . If war is right, than I suppose the general have supported the African Americans in 1960's if they are declared a war on whites. USSR with its 22,000 atomic bombs was defeated without a war so why cannot we defeat Hamas with less than 22,000 home made rockets without a war? America, for a change stop looking at the world through the barrel of a gun.

Manny   January 2nd, 2009 4:05 pm ET

Finally, there is somebody in TV who is a real newsman, neuttral and willing to invite people to debate about the Palestinian-Israeli confilict. Thanks Rick for your refreshing presence in the news.

Marie   January 2nd, 2009 4:07 pm ET

I don't want my tax money to be sent to Israel, and I don't want our country to sell weapons tanks war helicopters and war airplanes to Israel to be the giant over people who can't fight back....

Israel remember David and Goliath?

Kraemer   January 2nd, 2009 4:07 pm ET

This was written in the Bible, the sooner people realize this the sooner everything will be revealed! Can't wait to see who this person is, who signs this peace treaty in the near future.

Steve   January 2nd, 2009 4:07 pm ET

Israel has every right to attack the Palastine people. The have a terrorist group who are attacking Israel. What are they suppose to do sit there and take the rockets everyday.

Marie   January 2nd, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Ben Franklin predicted we would be enslaved by Jews unless they were banned by the constitution
A generation of brainwashing Evangelicals and liberals with Pro Israel Lies have created a nation of people who see nothing wrong with a rouge pack of Jackals feeding on the blood of innocent children of the nation they reside in

Over 30 years ago I went to Israel to see if I would want to live there (Kibbutz Zikkim in Ashkelon) and found that the issues are not just Jews vs Arabs, but that there are so many factions [diagreements] within each (Jews/Arabs) that I do not know how there could be any resolutions. The problem is that each feels that he/she has a right to that part of the country from a religious and historical perspective. I do feel that there was a chance in 1947 when the British left Palestine and partitioned the country (Jews around Tel Aviv/Arabs had Jerusalem) but the Arabs refused to accept this partition and went to war against the Israelis and lost. One could say the Israeli's won Israel fair and square, but fair and square will not resolve such long-standing issues, that go back much further than 40 yesrs ago. I left Israel after nearly missing a bomb in Tiberius and could see no resolution to two sides that vehemently hung onto their righteous beliefs. I was so thankful to live in the US.

sf   January 2nd, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Hamas kills their own pepole like ... Patach in order to lead DOWN ..without any hope the pepole of Gaza!

Neil   January 2nd, 2009 4:14 pm ET

if you had someone dropping bombs on you would you just sit there and not retaliate.all these bleeding heart liberals just want to appease arabs so they can say they are looking out for supposedly peacefull arabs while israel has to put up with suicide bombers that target civilians.

Jovieta   January 2nd, 2009 4:24 pm ET

Why in the world isn't the UN imposing sanctions on these people?

Martin Smith   January 2nd, 2009 6:45 pm ET

Everytime they [cnn] shows a sympathetic image of Palestinians being massacred – Rick always tries to imply that you shouldn't feel bad cause although its "easy to sympathize with Palestinians when you see such images" – that in actuality there are leaders who send their sons on suicide missions (that was his tie to justify the IDF bombardment) so you don't feel like the IDF is necessarily doing something bad.

Either Israel has to claim that it does not know how to use it own weapons technology or that they don't care who they kill – considering they've murdered over 400 ppl – majority women and children....pathetic.

shaker asad   January 3rd, 2009 11:36 pm ET

Hi rick,

I keep seeing people saying that hammas is firing rockets into israel and israel has the right to defend its citizens. What i am wondering is why no one is asking why hammas has been forced to do this. Gaza is one of the most densley populated cities in the world, that its citizens have been caged like animals(a wall built surrounding the city), no food to eat, no jobs..no education, all because the occupying country controls all that. They turn the electricity off whenever the feel like it...they do not allow you to import and export like any country does...you are basically animals and are treated as such while the rest of the world tells israel they cannot do that and they do whatever they want anyway. American citizens have a the biggest heart in the world and if they knew what was going on in Palestine they would be outraged. Former president Carter went and witnessed this first hand and was ridiculed by American Jews for speaking the truth. I am begging...begging the general American public to dig for the truth and do not fall into the biased jewish controlled media in the United States

Cheryl Wilson   January 4th, 2009 8:53 am ET

I would do exactly what ISREAL is doing now

John Drayson   January 4th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

president-elect Barrack Obamas response to the Israel-Palestinian conflict was incomplete. His comment should have included that if Hamas wants to start a war with Israel and target innocent people when Israel responds back militarily its Hamas killing more innocent people (Palestinians) not Israel. He should also condem any middle eastern country condeming Israel for defending itself. Until the people of these terrorist country's start standing up to their own leaders and start policing themselves will they be able to hold Israel or any one else accountable for what ever amount of force is brought back on them. This is also why we need energy independance. They seem to have the upper hand because they have the oil. We need to get the upper hand back for security reasons . They can't live on oil !!!

JonG   January 4th, 2009 5:57 pm ET

Your anti-Israel bias is not well hidden and is poor journalism. You allow Hamas to talk about proportionality and of Israel's war of aggression and terror. Try asking them, how they can claim to be the victim, when it the position of Hamas that the ENTIRE nation of Israel be wiped out? They have no intention of ever living along side Israel, no matter how much land we give back. As for proportionality, do you not understand or care, Israel wants the attacks against them to STOP. It is not about you take a life and we take one back. Israel just wants to stop the attacks against them. Journalism does not require you to accept a lie without responding with a fact.

Lesley   January 5th, 2009 9:46 am ET

Rick, how can Gaza be out of food, medicine, and other humanitarian necessities and not rockets and morters to fire at Israeli civilians? Do weapons grow on trees, there? Or will Hamas next claim the Israeli blockade allowed only armaments through and while blocking food and medicine?

Abel P. Ochoa, McAllen TX   January 5th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Israel's supporters ask, "Would we, US, allow a foreign power to launch rockets into our country?" Perhaps we should also be asking, "Would we allow a foreign power to control our air, sea, and our finances?" Another question that we should be asking is, " Why is Israel not talking to Hamas since they represent the Palestinian people in Gaza?" The American people aren't blind.

Bob Peck   January 5th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Hello Rick,

Glad to see you make it to the big time. I used to travel and work in Florida, and I recall hearing you on the radio. I also remember a time one of your radio pals, played at a tape of you singing (I think at a wedding). Stay with the news. You are great.

Sincerely,
Bob Peck

P.S. Do you kinow my friend Lorenzo Luaces??

Well Dun   January 5th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

Thank you Rick. I appreciate your even-handed treatment of the conflict in Gaza. I hope you will continue to report in such a fair and unbiased way about similar situations around the world.

Most don't know that Hamas actually shot rockets into Israel as a last-ditch effort to open the world's eyes to the tragedy in Gaza: an inhuman siege which was–literally–killing off the Palestinian people.

Thanks again. Please try to do something similar on the massacres going on in Chechnya and Kashmir.

Abel P. Ochoa, McAllen TX   January 6th, 2009 12:34 am ET

Rick, another question to consider is, "Why is Israel keeping journalists from entering into Gaza? We say that Hamas are Terrorists but who defined them that way? Of course, it was Israel and US. I'm not saying that Hamas are angels either but we really need to consider what a desperate people will do to survive. We need to realize that Israel has all the modern weapons including Nuclear Bombs. Hamas? All they have are rocks and their home made rockets and launchers. But consider just this, which side is doing most of the killing? As Christians, are we supposed to accept this?

Abel P. Ochoa, McAllen TX   January 6th, 2009 12:57 am ET

Rick, right now all I'm hearing is that UN observors should go to Gaza and control what Hamas is doing but what about controlling Israel too? The UN should also go into Israel and do the necessary controlling of the situation there too. Face facts, it's Israel who is controlling Gaza's air, sea, and finances. That has to change if they expect to ever have meaningful peace from the Palestinian people. Most Israel supporters want the Palestinians to oust Hamas as an answer but how would we like it if a foreign power ordered that we rid ourselves of our Democrats or Republicans in our political system?

Mike   January 6th, 2009 2:23 pm ET

Once again, the 1.5 million Palestinians living in a twenty first century prison called Gaza are being massacred under the silent eyes of the civilized world. For nearly two years, the impoverished people of Gaza have suffered from a debilitating siege, perpetuated by Israeli government, that has severely restricted the flow of food, drink, medicine, electricity, fuel, employment, and other requirements of human dignified existence.

In the last few days, the world has witnessed an unconscionable escalation of what is nothing less than “collective punishment” in the form of relentless bombing of Gaza’s dense population centers. Hundreds of Palestinians have died, and thousands injured, most of them are innocent civilians. In one family, four sisters have died after their home, bombed by the Israeli airplanes, collapsed on them while asleep.

People of conscience should not remain silent about this senseless bloodshed. We cannot understate the moral impoverishment in allowing the violence to continue, let alone spiral. We call for an immediate end to all the violence, and we ask fair-minded Americans to join us in this call.

The deplorable humanitarian conditions in Gaza, according to several human rights organizations, are beyond description. Our government has a moral responsibility to stop the Israeli aggression on the helpless people of Palestine.

Angie   January 6th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Thank you, thank you, for making people think twice before using God to justify violence.

terry   January 6th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

When will we relize that the price of war is the lost of civilians. That is reality!!!

Sekhar   January 6th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

An eye for an eye is never a solution. When it comes to resolving disputes between states or occupation by a stat it is only non voilence and disobedience which works jihad will only lead to destruction.

David Anderson   January 6th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

I was watching your show (probably for the last time). I saw that you followed up Christian Anamanpours (sp) news piece with an Israeli basically saying the dead kids, mothers, brothers and sisters where colateral damage. This is sick. How can a man like yourself with kids let this point of view stand unchallenged. What Israel is doing is criminal, war crimes against humanity and you are doing nothing but promote their evil. I love Jews but the Israeli government is no better than the terrorists.....just like i think Bush and Cheney are terrorists.

Simon Gulden   January 6th, 2009 3:41 pm ET

Bravo Rick!!
God must be a real busy guy.
God has got to have a split personality in order to be on all sides...good, bad, or indifferent.
All the best.

Iktemal   January 6th, 2009 3:41 pm ET

Shouldn't the people of Gaza be entitled to have some sort of act of protection in their own country, let alone their own streets. The Israeli solider who had appeared on your show should be ashamed to have spoken with such deceiving words! Israel cannot continue blaming Hammas for the genocides in Gaza (not to say Hammas is taking the right actions) but don’t poison the minds of the American people with lies… this is an attack on humanity. There is no excuse as to why Israel is attempting these criminal acts against innocent people (especially the young children) in Gaza.

Steven   January 6th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Why is Israel allowed to shoot at schools with children inside them? If the US soldiers fired upon an Iraqi or Afghani schools with children present the whole world would be alarmed and go crazy. So why is this OK for Israel? Is Israel bound by the Geneva Convention? Israel needs to stop this action and the US got needs to condemn this type of activity. Where is our President?

Nemer Baki   January 6th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

With all due respect to your Israeli guest, the IDF has always targeted civilians inside UN compounds and buildings. In April of 1996, Israeli forces bombed the UN compound near the village of Qana in Southern Lebanon despite knowing that over 500 innocent civilians had taken refuge in the compound. The result of the intentional Qana massacre was the death of over 100 women and children. Although they said it was a mistake, the UN investigation declared that the shelling of the UN compound was not an error.

Darlene Wood, Ogden, UT   January 6th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Rick, I really enjoy your show; love the fact that you like to hear from ordinary folk about what we think!!

Regarding the Israel – Hamas war, I feel Israel has not choice but to retaliate. I just saw the Christiane Amarpour report and it is heartbreaking to see these innocent children injured and killed!
Hamas is right there and can see all of this happening and yet will not stop their attacks on Israel! For me it shows how uncaring about life the terrorists are. The terrorists could bring peace immediately to the world; all they have to do is STOP!!! I do not care how they justify their killing, there is no religion in the world that justifies this kind of violence and disregard for life!!!

Thank you again for your caring and informative reporting.

Darlene Wood

Oswald   January 6th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

I think it is a matter of education on all sides. The question would be how can you get everyone to live as one country? Is religion so powerful as to justify war? Why Palestinians and Israelis can't live together? Or is it just a group of people (Hamas) that brain wash the young generations and less educated people. I believe both sides have to truly understand that is in their advantage to live in peace

Terell   January 6th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

"The LORD is a man of WAR: the LORD is his name." -Exodus 15:3 Read your bible Rick before you make comments what GOD is about. Do you think people just come up with these notions?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: An American unchurch 5 y. o boy observed his grandmother's dedicated Christian lifestyle, hears /sees the TV news about Moslems, Jews, and Christians. And asked this simple question: Well, which religion is God?

Police will always protect their brothers, this LA issue is paln murder, and the officer should be charged with murder!!

Leroy   January 6th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

The definition of the term civilian is one not in the armed services or the police force. The definition of the term combatant is a person engaged in fighting. The definition of combat is armed conflict, battle; struggle, contest.

In war, there are no noncombatants. Anyone, providing support of any form including moral, weapons, ammunition, transportation, medical, food, etc is engaged in the conflict. Killing people behind the battle lines works. The United States proved that in WWII when we dropped the atomic bombs on Japan. Do we believe our carpet-bombing in Germany and in Viet Nam was selective? We killed men, women, children, pets, farm animals, and destroyed buildings, houses, roads, bridges anything within range of the bombs.

In Viet Nam, the enemy would leave babies in the sun by the roadside booby trapped with hand grenades. If our soldiers attempted to show compassion, they died. Eight-year-old girls can kill as easily as a twenty-five year old man can. No one is exempt. Until we are willing to wage war like our enemy, we cannot win. Until we are willing to kill hundreds of people just to get to one, we cannot win, so we should quit.

In Gaza, anyone providing support of any form involves himself or herself in the combat and is therefore legitimate targets. The Gaza people made Hamas part of their government therefore as part of the Gaza government anything Hamas does; they do as representatives of the Gaza people. With Hamas acting for the Gaza people all Gaza people living within the borders of Gaza are legitimate targets. Since the government of Israel is synonymous with the Jewish religion, all Israelis, within the borders of Israel, are legitimate targets.

Anyone providing support to the United States' troops in Iraq or Afghanistan or "on terror" are legitimate targets. War is terror. Freedom fighter or terrorist is in the eye of the beholder.

Todd Ponaman   January 6th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Palestinians use children as human shields, hiding rockets & weapons in their homes, schools & mosques. It's a human tragedy, but make no mistake, civilians are dying because of Hamas, not Israelis. Palestinians parade their dead children through streets for all the world to see. Israel suffers in silence, quietly burying their children w/i 24 hrs. No parade, no cameras, no media.

Terell   January 6th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

The Officer who killed the unarmed man should be put to death according to the law!

terry   January 6th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Terrell, that will never happen you know the police report will be tainted!!!

shar   January 7th, 2009 11:48 am ET

i hope someday someone will report on why the arabs there have these uprisings against israel. these people are locked in gaza they cant leave, they basically have no economy, there children are starving. they are at the will of israel. no wonder they want to fight , they want better for their children. this comment in no way beleives that the firing of rockets into israel or suicide bombings is right. but what else do these people fight with? they have been locked in for years , how much can they take? when is the world going to look at what israel is doing to these people, and find a solution. they are not all terrorrist. these people cant leave to find jobs, they are considered lower class people in israel. i think here in the states we oppressed some people for a while, look what we did to the black americans for so long, remember how they as a race were treated in america for so long. same thing except worse for gaza is going on right now. journalist can help these people if they would report more on what they are saying and trying to tell the world, so come on rick, help them out!!

Jim Morris   January 7th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Middle East Conflict

As a United States citizen who is far removed from the Israeli/Palestinian conflict the solution to ending the war seems simple. Defeat the hate and intolerance which we considered illegal and immoral. The Middle East is nothing more than tribes of Arabs still fighting a religious war of existence between each other. They have not come to the realization that this hate is destroying a race of people, almost self genocide. Ask yourself, how many people would be alive today if there was never a terrorist’s movement among the Arab people? The Palestinians are at the mercy of hateful terrorist and a strong willed race of people. Will there ever be peace? NO! Peace treaties only last as long as the next suicide bombing or mortar attacks. To bad they don’t throw shoes instead.

Muslims are of there father the Devil and lust of there father they will do, this is why you see them doing the things they do, like self mutilation, blowing thermselves up, sex with underage girls, and bloodletting......... they Dennie Christ there for there spirit is Antichrist.

Susan Justice   January 7th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

OK. I'm tired of no one putting the picture all together.

Here it is in a nutshell: The Palestinians living in Gaza are primarily Hamas terrorists and their families. They voted in Hamas as their government (no brainer). However, the Israeli's have been controlling ingress and egress (not so much an economic blockade as a security blockade). Those people are stuck there.

There was a time when people could have left, but the terrorist Palestinians chose to stay.

israel kind of liked this situation because they contained them and could control that border.

So why did Hamas shell Israel knowing Israel always retaliates? Because the terrorist mentality is to be a martyr and bring public opinion down on Israel seeking to get concessions by this pressure. They win either way. To them, losing is winning, dying is winning.

The homes targeted are Hamas leaders – they are warned and stay anyway. They insist their families stay with them and be martyrs. Hence, the civilian toll.

Now what happened 40 years ago is the real issue. Israel used terrorist bombings against the British to get them out of the area. When they were "given" Israel, of course there were going to be upset Palestinians. Many swore death to Israel as a country and use the black and white checkered head dress, folded down one side in the shape of Israel to express their views. How to unwind this whole mess, I do not know. But I assure you, this current situation is explainable by the above.

rockman   January 8th, 2009 4:58 pm ET

May God bless Israel forever! If the palestinian muslims want to drive Israel into the sea let them try! It will be the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob or the demon of islam. You who critisize Israel will meet the Lord on the same grounds as islam. Obama will not save you. I want to be on the Lords side not obamas.

Tsel Midbar   January 9th, 2009 11:38 am ET

Hello Rick,
It is nice to see so many people complimenting you on being faith to both sides, and then stating why you are siding with one group in particular ;-)
It is with heavy heart that we watch the pictures of slain children and innocent civilians.
Yet, I struggle with the fact that here we see many Palestinians suffering all at once, so the numbers seem huge. Yet taken with the fact that ever since the Hamas intifada II – “The uprising” of 2000, the numbers of Israeli dead were scattered over eight years, so no one paid it any attention. What about the 123 Israeli children 0-17 years of age who were murdered since 2000 by Palestinian militants…? Are their numbers being contrasted with the current ones? I will be happy to supply names and photos of these children so that they become “real figures” too!

1,307,319 IRAQI DEATHS!!

Does no one else find this number SHOCKING AND SOBERING!!!

or are they right about US...

IMPEACH BUSH BEFORE 1/20/2009

or we will ALL be just as GULTY of MUDERER!!!

or PAYING FOR IT!!!

----------------------------

http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/iraq/iraqdeaths.html

The number is shocking and sobering.

It is at least 10 times greater than most estimates cited in the US media, yet it is based on a scientific study of violent Iraqi deaths caused by the U.S.-led invasion of March 2003.

That study, published in prestigious medical journal The Lancet, estimated that over 600,000 Iraqis had been killed as a result of the invasion as of July 2006. Iraqis have continued to be killed since then. The graphic above provides a rough daily update of this number based on a rate of increase derived from the Iraq Body Count. (See the complete explanation.)

The estimate that over a million Iraqis have died received independent confirmation from a prestigious British polling agency in September 2007. Opinion Research Business estimated that 1.2 million Iraqis have been killed violently since the US-led invasion.

This devastating human toll demands greater recognition. It eclipses the Rwandan genocide and our leaders are directly responsible. Little wonder they do not publicly cite it. Here is simple HTML code to post the counter to your website and help spread the word.

Action you can take right now
Sign the petition telling Congress that about a million Iraqis have likely been killed and urging them to end this war now. A large number of signatures on this and other petitions is a compelling way to keep pressure on Congress as there are more votes on the war. Add your name»

Post the Iraqi Death Estimator on your website
Fight attempts to minimize Iraqi suffering and remind visitors to your site of the awful human costs of continued war. (See the list of some folks we know have posted the counter.)

Here is some simple code that you can cut and paste into the HTML of your website. The counter will automatically update over time.

Rick, Do you think that the US media is ever going to show the true face of Israel. You guys at CNN should be ashamed of your coverage of the current situation in Gaza. If you cant get in there then atleast show or talk about some history of the conflict so that the viewers here atleast understand what this war is about and please dont say it is because of the rockets being fired by Hamas... I just happened to come across a documentary 'Dont shoot the messenger' on youtube. I believe you need to see that.

christian   January 10th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

How can someone take ur house kill ur family and hold dominance over ur country just because they believe that God gave this land to them. long time time ago this kind of belief wiped out the indians from their land so colonists can take over it... well that happened when men were uncivilized... but how about nowadays, with all the evolution that man accomplished and still accept this to happen as the israelites are God's spoiled pple.... hmmm and u say that only muslims are religious freaks and fanatics?

brian cooper florence alabama   January 12th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

U ask if Mr Bush contributed? Well i guess the record and the statistics just simply speak for themselves dont they. Man im glad we didnt have to do a big recount thing with President Obama.. Oh his people live in Hawaii not Florida right? LOL

Jack Basuk   January 13th, 2009 12:38 am ET

Dear Editor:

It seems that we Jews are castigated when we fight back and also when we do not. Over the last two thousand years we have been amongst the most pacifist of societies and look where it got us – the Holocaust.

We are now being accused of responding to the rocket attacks from Hamas in a disproportionate manner. Israel’s response is quite proportionate in light of Hamas’s stated aim: the destruction of Israel.

China girl   January 13th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

US provides financial support to Israel. US tax payers are killing innocent civilians in Gaza, we have blood in our hands.

Babs   January 13th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

Honestly, we would never allow Christians to take the state of "Maine" and say its our state. Being Jewish is not a race its a religion. Jews can live any where but they can not come together and say they own a piece of land because God told them it's their land.

unseen8   January 13th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Isreal is killing civilians with white phosphorus. This has to be a war crime.

avalanchemike   January 13th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

Isreal and every country, has a right to defend itself at all costs when attacked. If Hamas was so concerned about its people then they wouldnt be firing rockets into Isreal, knowing a response is eminent.

Joe F Cardenas   January 13th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Rick here is an IDEA!

700 BILLIONS divide them among the US Tax payers (Our money anyways) will create a population of MILLIONAIRES...

700,000,000,000 !

An immediate economic super booster!
Everyone including Banks will benefit.

Money is made to circulate just like blood!

Money is Energy!

Jo Ann B.   January 13th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

I just saw your piece on the Gaza strip, concerning the "White Phosphorus Bombs in Gaza" I am outraged, just outraged by these actions. Earlier I felt neutral on the Gaza issue because both parties are at fault, but by using these techniques on the inhabitants of Gaza, I feel no pity at for Israel. Those poor people are trapped liked rats in a cage with no place to go, and have nothing but a few antequated rockets. They live in pure poverty, they do not possess the advanced warefare techniques that the Israelis have been provided by US support. When is the US going to intervene in order to stop this conflict? This is unbelievable.

unseen8   January 13th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

I dont feel Isreal's force is justified. Somebody needs to speak out against their actions. Also Hamas is no doubt playing a big part in this pain and suffering and the Palestinians needs to address their ways and actions.

maxim adoberavoski   January 13th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

no country at war should receive US assistance. Not even Isreal.

theresa   January 13th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

I have been following the situation in the Middle East (Gaza) and I am wondering why doesn't CNN use the reporters inside Gaza? Isreal should not be allowed to commit such human right violations and not be seen by the main stream media. At least use the pictures that are flowing out of Gaza from the Arab media.

Gunther   January 13th, 2009 6:55 pm ET

Rick: These peculiar plumes with rapidly downward-moving tentacles which we have seen for a while above the skies of population centers like Gaza city were actually weapons systems containing white phosphorus. You were one of the first to discuss this phenomenon openly in your CNN program on January 13. I commend you for calling a spade a spade. Regardless of the variety of passionate arguments on either side of the conflict, the overwhelming force used by Israel in Gaza and apparent violations of the Geneva convention will eventually be totally counterproductive and hurt even the most sensible claims of Israel for recognition of their causes and their share of Palestinian lands.

shefi   January 13th, 2009 7:16 pm ET

Israel has been suffering missles attacks for the past 8 years not to mention the Israeli soldiers kidnaped on 2006 including Gilad Shalit. if Hamas is choosing to hide betwwen their civilains it is sad but there is nothing Israel can do abou it. dont forget that after the 9/11 attack ,these Palestinains (at least some ) were cherring.

Chicagoan 2009   January 13th, 2009 7:27 pm ET

If the Chamas leadership would spend as much energy and time providing money (economy), goods and services to the civilian population, rather then spending same on smuggling weapons, and bobby trapping schools, and warehousing weapons in mosques, the world would be a better place.

FREE PALESTINE   January 13th, 2009 8:14 pm ET

The fact of the matter is isreal needs to stop taking up land that was never theirs. After all they britan placed them in the state of PALESTINE when they fled Germany. It doen't take a rocket scientist to figure out that isrealis are not from that part of the world. Their state sticks out like a sore thumb being in the middle of many arab countries i mean come on people...
As far as for their war tactics WAR CRIMES is written all over their government from blowing up blocks at a time to using illegal burning agents to torture the civilians.
I know our media filters everything out but it only takes a little surfing on youtube and you will see what the palestinian people go through on a daily basis....

Chicagoan 2009   January 13th, 2009 8:16 pm ET

I am an American and was touring the middle east last month, I went for myself to see Sderot, Israel to see if what I had been reading about the rockets being launched from chamas in Gaza were indeed serious. To make a long story short, a kassam landed and exploded 100 yards from me. I was thrown to the ground with no warning from th econcusion of the explosion. Those who say that that rockets are not deadly are wrong. Further, they have no guidance at all. RIgged to present maximum terror on civilians.

William Kerry   January 13th, 2009 8:18 pm ET

I believe that if the missals stopped coming from Gaza Israel would have never gone into this war. The question needs to be asked. What does Chamas want? It does not recognize the existence of the state of Israel. They took over Gaza by force. They were not able to come to an agreement about sitting together with Abu Mazan. It is time for the Palestinians in Gaza to step up. I am confident Israel is willing to make a lot of concession .Chamas needs to decide if it want to live in a state of war or instead of trying to kill Jews they want to fight for the future of all Palestinians to have a self sustained country . Now is the time to decide. A compromise is called for .We need to stop all this killing before we reach a point were there is no return

robyn caffrey keyser west - virginia   January 14th, 2009 1:40 am ET

ya know rick "' looks like to stop the gaza crimes, maybe obama could build ( stores and factorys ) coffee shops , over there , so it will give them pepole over there a reason to get out , and that might make them feel good about themselves

there's gotta be hope for them get all the men over there working.

robyn from keyser wv   January 14th, 2009 1:44 am ET

hey rick " maybe all them law officers took the same oghth on justus systems as keyser

Faisal Nahian   January 14th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Hundreds of innocent children's are being killed in the name of terrorist...........whole world is watching but doing nothing? May be they feel, seeking for animal rights is better than humans. Come on People!, care about human despite religion, race or gender!!!

Zayd Z.   January 14th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

Hey Rick! Long time viewer...
I've always wanted to comment, so here we go.
The numbers in this "war" are very lopsided. These rockets fired into Israel by Hamas equate to large fireworks compared to the 1 ton sophisticated bombs being dropped by Israel. Not to mention the white phos. bombs being used.

50% civilian casualty rate?? When it smells like it and feels like it, you call it what it is...systematic genocide.

Abel P. Ochoa, McAllen TX   January 20th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

Every decent person should hate war and we should consider war only as a last resort. Of course I don't consider that the Hamas Government is run by angels but I don't consider that the Isreali Government is run by angels either. Israel should not be controlling Gaza's borders, air space or economic financial dealings. How would we like it if a foreign power controlled ours? Face it, the two governments should reconsider everything and begin to talk.
