Michael Vick

Michael Who? Vick? Doesn't Ring A Bell...

From T.J. Holmes

You remember Michael Vick?

A year ago this month, he had just been sentenced to 23 months in prison after pleading guilty to federal dogfighting charges.

A year ago this month, the city of Atlanta was divided about his guilt or innocence, even divided over whether race played a factor in his treatment by the NFL, by his team, and by the media.

A year ago this month, Bobby Petrino, the then first-year head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, quit with three games left in the season to take a job at my alma mater, the University of Arkansas.

A year ago this month, the Atlanta Falcons had a record of 3-11.

Move forward to April of this year. The falcons pick a quarterback at number 3 in the draft. Some questioned the move and the money they paid him: $72 million.

Now move forward to today.

The Atlanta Falcons have a record of 10-5, and have clinched a spot in the playoffs.

Their quarterback, Matt Ryan is a shoo-in for Rookie of the Year and becoming a frontrunner for league MVP.

If you were a Falcons fan, would you remember Michael Vick?

This is one of the best blog posts I have ever read. I remember back last year when What's His Name was all headlines. Then you don't hear about him and yes, the Falcon's have certainly changed and improved. High paid athlete's should be a thing of the past. You have a passion for the sport and are drafted in the 3rd round, you can be on top of the world. Love the game, love the sport and watch What's His Name end up without a thing and our world a little bit better off for him being caught, tried and convicted for his selfless act.

Thom Robinson   December 23rd, 2008 3:44 am ET

Oops I meant picked at number 3 not the 3rd round...sorry

roberto trevino   December 23rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

I think Michael Vick will be back and I will cheer him on. He is paying for his crime ( more than most ) so i think he should be left alone. He was an easy target for those making a name for themselves. What about going after wall street? They have done real damage to real people.

dennis kennedy   December 29th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

The Isreali response is so over the top I cant believe there is so little outcry outside the middle east. My wife is Jewish and we are both outraged and saddened. Isreal has to stop colonizing on Palestinian settlements. They must stop arresting Palestinians for simply riding in cars with Isreali plates. Stop bombing schools. Stop killing civilians. Terrorism cant be justified by simply being Jewish. Let the Palestinians live freely.

K-DUB   December 29th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

We have been at war for 5 years in the Middle East. If the United States were taking fire from Mexico, over our borders, would we respond?

K-DUB   December 29th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Mike Vick will come back better than ever! There are millions who support Mike Vick but we seldom get coverage!

dennis kennedy   December 29th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Support VICK! People who abuse animals are known to have a high rate of violence against people. I say the garbage got off easy. Hanging dogs in his yard? Unlawful gambling. Watching dog fighting is for mentaly bankrupt sickos. Let alone putting the operation together. He did not need the money so its the killing he desired.

Kathy   December 31st, 2008 3:33 pm ET

I will always remember how Michael Vick was railroaded over some dogs. I love dogs, however, I would not destroy a man's career over dogs. A white man kills 80 dogs in Pennslyvania and nothing happens to him, where was the outrage? Brandy, the singer, kills a person in car accident and she walks away scott free. What the hell is the world coming too. If Michael Vick wer white this would never have happened over some frikin dogs.

Double standards

Here is the Way to Promote Peace in the Middle East:

12/4/08
Amended Update to President-elect Obama 12/28/08

Here’s what’s very much on my mind, President-elect Obama. I hope that you will be much more receptive to such important issues than President Bush was. We all know what he did, namely his own thing, and very little else! He clearly preferred to ignore many vital bits of important information that could have saved a lot of people an awful lot of trouble and grief! Please don’t do that to us again! I don’t think you will.
I feel a very urgent need to keep this enclosed urgent matter in the forefront of our foreign policy concerns. It regards the Middle East situation, and terrorism. It is most critical information! So please, just save everyone a whole lot of time, energy, frustration, and further calamity and give it the serious attention it surely deserves.
For the last few years many people have been using the term “Judeo-Christian” to represent the Christian faith and its criteria of practice. This is clearly a gross misrepresentation, and it is totally wrong, as the Scriptures clearly confirm.
We must begin realizing that the Christian faith is totally a “Christian” entity–of Christ–and must be recognized as such. Judaism, on the other hand, rejects Christianity, and is in no wise any party with Christ. Christ cancelled Judaism or the Jewish law system forever, with his everlasting sacrifice on Calvary’s cross for the sins of the whole world. For this insightful breakthrough we can turn to such scriptures as Hebrews 10:8-10 where we read:

“Christ said, ‘You did not want animal sacrifices or
grain offerings or animals burned on the altar or other
offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them’ (though
they are required by the law of Moses). Then he added,
‘Look, I have come to do your will.’ He cancels the first covenant in order to establish the second. And what God
wants is for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the
body of Jesus Christ once for all time.” (NLT. See also KJV and other translations. They all take us to exactly the same place!)

Because of what Christ did for us at Calvary, in cancelling the old covenant, and in tearing down Judaism forever by his own sacrifice of Himself in our place and on our behalf, the Judaism part of the modern term “Judeo-Christian” clearly is a gross misrepresentation of the Christian faith, and it has seriously corrupted it in the eyes of many. Many other scriptures show us this also, as I discuss at greater length in my recent book. In our time, however, the term “Judeo-Christian” seems to have launched us upon a whole new rebuilding of Judaism–the rebuilding of all of the things that Christ tore down (See Galatians 2:18) almost 2000 years ago.
This extremely important insight is what is at the very core and center of our current international crisis with the Islamic world. Nor would it do us any good whatsoever to declare this area of human life off-limits to any consideration of international security and politics. It is the fundamental crux of the entire matter now before us in this security crisis of gargantuan proportions. If we were to just relegate this most important consideration to the untouchable realm of religion without any meaningful consideration of it, our security would continue to be threatened. That would be carrying the separation issue to an absurd extreme, which would be the height of human folly, since all of mankind believes in something in some one religious sense or another. And if we are ever to restore any moral foundation for America’s leadership in this world, then we are obligated to address this serious matter. Else wise we have no moral grounds for serious leadership on earth any longer. We simply proceed forever downward on our current “fool’s errand” along the way to nowhere and into oblivion.
In a recent news item from MSNBC news we note the following:
“The terrorism threat to the U.S. over the next five years will be driven by instability in the Middle East and Africa…” (into Dec. 25, 2008).
Any thoughtful person might well ask, and what after that?
The most helpful thing would be for this nation generally to stop confusing the Christian faith, complicating it needlessly, and combining it with Judaism, because God has made it abundantly clear in the sacred Scriptures that this is unacceptable to Him. And in recent years it has been very instrumental in wreaking havoc in America’s international affairs and security. It has not benefited other nations either.
True diplomacy, if we would have it, must start with this overwhelming reality. In fact God is the real Diplomat, in all that He accomplished 2000 years ago in the work of his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. He sent forth grace, and love, and mercy, into all of this needy world, and now we have ruined it by confusing it and mixing it back up with unbelieving Judaism. We ourselves didn’t do it, but we are blindly following it and those who did do it, and so begins our troubles! We’re in a huge mess over this matter, with militant Islam going after us in their own kind of “holy war”. Religion is indeed at the very heart and soul of this contention with militant Islam, and if we don’t have enough sense to address it, then we have nothing in us of any value at all!
But we can stop it if we can bring ourselves to come into the truth at long last and mean business with the living God who wrote the inspired Scriptures. We don’t have to be the helpless pawns in the devil’s game. God gave us all that we need to succeed and be victorious in Him. But we must get serious with Him!
The way of peace is found in God’s one and only way of righteousness. The Scriptures tell us: “…the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever” (Isa. 32:17. See also Ps. 84:11, Pro. 14:31-34, 15:21).
I firmly believe that peace has long eluded us and will continue to elude us in the Middle East and beyond because God’s one true way of righteousness has not been honored nor followed. Unfortunately, our own moral degradation has blinded us to God’s solution as well as the real cause of the unrest that exists.
And also, I would submit to you another important insight. It is simply that the great Christian faith has been around this troubled world for almost 2000 years. It has lifted much of lost humanity, and breathed new life into many lost souls. Even the Arabs know that! And don’t you think that they will indeed begin to sympathize with us in our situation here if and when we finally begin to demonstrate to them that we are not so entirely out-of touch with their thoughts, concerns, and feelings either? If we do our own homework with Christ, then they will undoubtedly gain new respect for us and sympathize with the predicament that we all now face with the modern unbelieving state of Israel. If we continue in our current mindset they will continue to view us as superficial, shallow, and shortsighted professing “Christians” who know or care little about the real Christian faith.
Thus, “holy war” with the western hypocrites! If you are truly wise, President-elect Obama, you will begin in earnest in this one vital area among the many to indeed “today..begin in earnest the work of making sure that the world we leave our children is just a little bit better than the one we inhabit today”, just as you have promised you would do. If you are willing to follow God’s truth, you will make it a much better world than what we now have facing us. For there is only one way out of this modern man-made mess.
If we would be wiser today than we were yesterday, we would follow God’s perfect lead in all of our future efforts in the diplomatic area and beyond. God’s ways are our only hope, and they are higher, and better, than man’s ways. And his ways are not grievous, for they are the ways of love and hope, and not of wars and violence. As we are now just witnessing all over again, the modern faith of Judaism in Israel only knows retaliation against Hamas’ actions in the oppression that takes place daily against the Palestinians. Wars and the limited wisdom in diplomacy efforts of modern men offer no real solutions and never will. They all fall far short of the mark in God’s higher insights.
Yet with God all things are possible. (Mt. 19:26 & Mk. 10:27. See also Mk. 14:36 & Lu. 18:27.) With God and his gracious example in Christ our Savior and Lord, the answer becomes simple! Yes we can, as you say, Obama. Oh, God be praised, yes we can! Amen.
For more important information in this vital area of things, my book on all of this is available on Amazon.com in the Christian inspirational books department. There Is A Kingdom, by Anita Whalley. Complimentary copy is available from the author with the receipt of Barack Obama’s correct mailing address.
This is an important book for the whole world to read.

"The Constitution gives the Senate the ultimate authority to decide the qualifications of any of its members,"

Where's your coverage of the situation when BURRIS refused to drop
prosecution of an innocent man after DNA evidence exclluded him
as the murderer of a 10 yr old girl?

His Deputy AG resigned over this:

BURRIS should be in jail – not the Senate.

CNN: Israel Broke Gaza Cease-Fire

Nice reporting and perhaps a little closer to the truth. Thanks.

oscar   January 6th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

I'm against Isreal bombing Gaza, but Now Hamas must be the bigger man and concede!! They say they want peace, but they need to walk the walk and not juss talk!

oscar   January 6th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

As an African American, I can't believe how much Roland Burris portays himself as an helpless black man. He is an upper class if not multi-millionaire 71 year old black man. He knows how much he got himself into getting appointed by a tainted governor, and I don't feel sorry for him!!

eddie   January 6th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

I think that God is just a cover up for people that crave power. I am a service member and a war Vet and i can say that most people in the middle east could care less that i was christian or american over there. This is a war over groups that want to take over land and do not care who they need to eliminate to get what there greed wants.

Twila   January 6th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

I would like to comment regarding the remark made about God and the individuals that have used the Higher as an excuse to kill, steal, and destroy. If you are a christian, you will be able to identify God from Satan. Obviously, when reading God's Word you will learn that Israel has always been God's people. When remarks are being made that God has his power in this war with Israel and Hamas I believe that what they are referring to is no one will ever battle Israel and destroy it as it truly is God's Chosen. Let's not make this look as though God is the evil one. He is here to give life not to take away. Satan, on the other hand, is very deceiving and is here to steal, kill, and destroy. People need to wake up and pray for this country and all the surrounding countries. If we ever needed God, it is now!

eddie   January 6th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

One more thing for you to consider as a vet myself of a war in the middle east. They use children, not only that but the hole perpose of war is to eliminate and that is all who go against you regaurdless of age or sex.

jeff D   January 6th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

Israel is not using the Torah to justify killing civilians or anyone else. They are only trying to protect their people from the Muslims who DO use the Koran to justify killing anyone who does not believe as they do.
The Islamist are modern day savages who have no regard for human life. Do you think the United States would have taken thousands of rockets before we would have retaliated . I don't understand why Israel waited so long.

Barbara   January 6th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

I always shudder when I hear "The Bible Says" and an angry looking adult brutally whips a small terrified child. "Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child" This is the rationale used to justify this.
This makes ME SICK.

D'Ann Doyle   January 6th, 2009 3:39 pm ET

I once heard a comment attributed to Yassar Arafat which gave me some perspective. It was that all of these wars are being fought over who has the best invisible friend.
