Rick on Facebook

Join Rick's Facebook Friends!

I know what we do here is a little different: using Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook during a newscast. It's more of a conversation, and if, when you first watch, you're left scratching your head, you're not alone.

Just ask David Berkowitz, a social media and marketing strategist.

He gives lectures all over the country on this topic, and he was watching me on a plane recently. He was at the same time impressed and annoyed by all the busy-ness going on.

On his blog Marketers' Studio he writes, "I still fear how it plays out on CNN. As a social media strategist, I'm tickled by it. As a student of media, it intrigues me. As a marketing consultant, I'm learning from it. But as a consumer who's on a flight to Salt Lake City half-heartedly tuning into CNN as I get a few things done, I want it all to go away."

Mr. Berkowitz, we thank you for watching. I enjoyed your blog and I hope you'll enjoy mine.

Just so you can be a little more tickled.

Berkowitz makes some interesting points, but it's clear that he half-watched one hour of your show if he thinks that a) you agree with everything your guests say and b) that you air lame comments. It's true some people have less to say than others, but people are participating and that's the important thing.

Great blog and show Rick! Keep up the excellent reporting!

Rick,

I'm currently watching "The Big 3 Bailout Saga" part 2 on CNN. Gettlefinger and the UAW says GM will be done by the end of December? Amazing!

A multi-billion dollar corporation, and they didn't see such an impending doom until 2 months prior? Absolute rubbish! I think the Gov't should ask the Big 3 what their bankruptcy plans are...after all, they (the Big 3) should be planning for EVERY scenario, and not just a check on the back of taxpayers.

Mike (Rockaway, NJ)   December 4th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

It’s good publicity that the BIG 3 automakers drove themselves to congress in hybrids- but which “exquisite” hotels did they stay @ along the way? How does that expense compare with flying in on their Jets?

Bob   December 4th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

To the guy who wants the Sanchez show to go away, I take the opposite view. I get plenty of news whenever I want it on CNN and elsewehere. I turn into the Sanchez show because Rick is the most consistently happy person I know. It lifts my day each day. I want the pill he takes!

lassana   December 4th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

hey rick, this is a very bad idea to move slaves bodies.

Ken Winther   December 4th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Simulus to help consumers and car makers. Instead of government giving money at the top to the car makers give the consumers a simulus check when the buy an american car. Like ten percent of the purchase price. This way the car makers sales go up and money is put in the consumers hands to spend.

Arriana,

Will you please explain Bill Maher?

James from Jackson, TN   December 4th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Hey, If you don't like Rick Sanchez there's a thing called a remote control and you can change the channel. If your watching on a computer there a big red X you can hit and it will go away.

Hey rick I can't figure out why you don't blog on myspace everyday where my suppose to leave my comment on the last blog or email you? plz explain. Love the show, keep it up, this is great.

Carl   December 4th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Rick, I have followed CNN since the beginning. However, the afternoon shows have become increasingly tabloid. I have been aware of your pieces since before your afternoon spot. The problem for me is what the makeup of your constituency, the twitters, bloggers and commentors just don't seem truely plugged in to the facts, nor do they seem to have the intelectual depth to make critical judgemnts on events of the day. Increasingly I find myself just shutting off CNN in the P.M.

disgusted4real   December 4th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

I'm really disappointed that there's a plan in the works that would reduce interest rates to 4.5% on new purchases of homes and not on refinances. I currently am not in dire straits but being able to reduce my mortgage would allow me to loosen my purse strings and contribute more to the economy. I feel like I'm being persecuted for being responsible. Heck, I see automaker CEO's asking for Billions of Dollars and I guarantee you, they'll get a portion if not all they're asking for.....

winnie   December 4th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Re: The Automakers Bailout
My husband retired from GM after 30+ years. He worked on the assembly line earning less than $20/hour. His pension is a little over a thousand a month which he earned by working on as many as 60 cars an hour, almost going in a run for 8 hours a day.

Many people have been so misinformed about unions. If not for unions, no hourly wage earner would be able to survive. This $70/hour figure the media throws around is a bunch of bull crap. Does this include the $17 billion + that some CEOs receive? Why aren't they asked to give back? The average TV viewer really needs to be properly informed about what the assembly line workers actually earn, compared to the no regulations, no common sense execs who skim all the money and make it look like the unionized employees are at fault. Give them the facts, Rick ... not bull.

Ed Folaron   December 4th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

During your show you mentioned that the Big 3 should have benn paying attention to Toyota and Subaru. Making it sound as if the big 3 was at fault for them being here. Maybe you should lok into what happened in th epast to bring the Big 3 down. Little things like the Content laws requiring the Big 3 to layoff people because they had by Federal law buy from outside sources. Maybe the fact that foreign car advertisements in the U.S. are in ENGLISH. In Japan and China the Big 3 advertisements are in English and most of the people there do not understand our language. Better yet, look into how these foreign companies worked their way around import fees. Subaru brought the BRAT in with two seats in the bed of their trucks. Making it a car not paying fees on trucks. About half the fee. Or maybe the NAFTA AGREEMENT, we had with Mexico within 3 years Toyota, Honda and Subaru had plants runnng and were selling their cars and trucks for half of what the Big 3 could sell them for. Because they did not have to pay the higher labor costs. You ask why? maybe as an investigative reporter you shouls look into it and maybe ask the Federal Government why they are exporting our jobs to South America as did 20/20 years ago did. Why when a new company wants to start up here they are taken by the Chamber of Commerace to plants south of the boarder and offered building and setups for free to aid those countries. Go ahead buy that Honda, let the Big 3 fold up and wonder why no one can afford to pay the cable companies to watch those informed investigative reporters. Buy American Made by Americans

Lanric Hyland   December 4th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Of all the BS about the automakers, the most "What !??!" inspiring was the email that said the Big three each of an autoplant in Europe that manufactures cars that meet the EU standards for mileage and emmissions.

If they already have the blueprints and capability to manufacture such vehicles in Europe, WHY IN THE WORLD haven't they retooled their American lines?

Do they think Americans don't deserve clean air and high mileage?

Now, THAT'S a question worth you spending some time on and inviting them to "testify" on your program.

Talk about insulting to the Amertican people!!

Jeb Bush for sentate. I am so excited about the possibility of Jeb running for the Senate. What would be better for this country than having another Bush in politics ??? Can you even imagine how good it could be.

We could get (a) Old Brownie back at Fema (b) Harriet Meirs on the Supreme Court (c) Donald Rumsfeld back at Defense (d) Alberto Gonzales back to Justice (e) Scooter Libby back in the White House
area (f) maybe start another war or two (g) Open another Gitmo (h) Monitor some more citizen communications (i) torture some more folks
(j) put a halt to medical research as we know it

I mean this would be a great step for the country, don't you think

Regards

Sarah

"Bail us out"

The auto industry has said they employed 400,000 workers in the early 70's; and now they employ 40,000... a tenth of what they did before... And now they have enormous medical costs from their extensive retiree's that they also support...
Instead of a hand-out to business's who haven't taken leadership roles in their industry... If we use the money to implement UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE, we can remove the auto industies enormous medical burden... And benefit 45 MILLION uninsured in our country as well... A WIN/WIN...
Why shouldn't republicans like this anyway; it then would become a better business enviroment since business's would not have that burden to carry anymore... Shouldn't medical care/hospitals be like social responsibilities; like police and fire departments?

Christian Anthony

btw... my wife loves you... keep up the good work... ok, I like you too...

I think I understand that GM wants 18B and Chrysler wants 7B. GM then will buy Chrysler for 7B. Giving them a wash on a purchase using tax payers dollars. This way they still have 18B. Could you please ask one of your experts if this would be a good investment for me as a taxpayer.

Thank you,
Stacy H

jimsturgill   December 4th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

why dont these auto makers do a reality check? if they are paying some workers 70 some dollars an hour and they are making millions a year how do they expect the average americans to but their cars ? is like so many other people in the us . the have out priced their selves as far as thinking how valuable they are . a car shouldnt cost almost as much as some people pay for a home . i can remember when you could buy a new car for under 4,000 dollars . myself i have never even made as much as 16 dollars an hour and i have done some pretty hard jobs.

Yea but!!   December 4th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

The news is clearly a blessing & a curse. If the bailout was widely broadcast & publicized all these companies & agencies wouldn't dare beg for gov't money. The Bush admin just opened the pandora's box. Give one give all. The Bush admin just sanctioned corporate socialism.

Debbie Torrence   December 4th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

A simple fix for the struggling economy: Let me explain–
There are approximately 235 million people in the USA that are over the age of 18 and not incarcerated and have a legitimate US mailing address who LIVE in this country with citizenship.. Give each one of us $500,000.00 broken down into payments of $500.00 each month. NO , I am NOT asking the govt to support us .. I am stating that if WE get a stimulus – this is what will happen:
1- mortages paid (housing crisis solved)
2- car payments made, will buy new car (auto industry saved)
3- will make credit card payments (Bank of America and citi saved)
4- will travel (oil prices could even go up and we would not panic)
5- people will invest (stock market stabilizes)
6- we will shop (economy revitalized)
and if there is a mathmetician among our politicians they will see that it would take approximately 83 years to distribute this money (117.5 million) and the average life span is now 82 years and anyone over 18 would only receive this money on average for a total of 65 years bringing the total distribution to about 96 million - dont you think that is a lot better than 700 BILLION that we as taxpayers are giving away in the hopes that it will be paid back?
so simple, but makes so much sense to me....

Cbudgo   December 4th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

I was listening to your broadcast of the meeting with the Auto CEO's. I still haven't heard anyone mentioning the limiting of Executive Compensation.
One or more of the CEO's have mentioned working for $1 next year. What about the year after, and the year after that, and so forth.
I think what is being missed here, is their mindset. They would have the monies for a strong company, for re-tooling, if they hadn't been giving their assets away in the form of $300 million 'bonuses', 'Cash awards', etc.
Maybe we can get some of that money back.......

Food prices are at their highest in 17 years... The inflation was blamed on higher transportation costs due to the high cost of fuel. How and when will prices for consumer goods be effected by falling transportation costs?

Dizzyyoyo   December 9th, 2008 10:19 am ET

How can the Federal Government inject so much money into the Financial system, without a payback theory? The auto companies are being subjected to their screw ups! If Bank of America was part of the bailout, were'nt they told to infuse into the small companies and home owners? If the bank wasn't going to do this, why did they get and recieve this money?

Chuck Casey   December 9th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

If Barack Obama wants to reduce greenhouse gasses he should require every house in in the West and Southwest have solar pannels on their roofs.

Cathy Hatton   December 11th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

We are a retired GM family from the Moraine,Ohio plant, that is closing on Dec 23rd. My husband retired with 34 years. I'm sorry, but I would like to give a challenge to any member of Congress or US Senate to go to one the automotive plants and work for just one day on the assembly line, I would hope they would have a new understanding what these people do, how they earn their pay per hour.
If this bailout is not passed, do they have any idea of the number of people that will be out of work , not only the employee's, but spouses, and children, they will have no money and no health insurance. Sounds like a real problem to me.
I'm retired from NCR Corp,Dayton,Ohio with 33 years of service and my job went to India, and we had to train them.
I'm just really worried about what is going to happen to the people here in the United States.
We can bail out the banks with no questions ask, but what about the regular worker trying to make a living.
My mother is in a nursing home and her life insurance is through AIG, with everything else going on now I have that to worry about if she is going to lose her insurance.
Sorry Rick for going on with my problems, I know their are other people with alot worse things than us , but it is very upsetting going day to day not knowing what is going to happen.
Thanks for listening.
Cathy

Here's an issue for discussion, but first allow me to clarify something... I DO NOT smoke marijuana. That being said; The marijuana industry is a multi-million dollar profit goldmine. It's simple... Legalize it and tax the heck out of it. Combine laws for alcohol and tobacco and place heavy restrictions on the end user, while using the taxes from profit to rebuild our deficit and allow small businesses to flourish as cofffee shops and other businesses have. We could potentially be out of our national debt in a decade all the while having more money to help our needy, provide research grant for things like alternative fuel and more! The money spent combatting it in law enforcement would simply be restructured into controlling it's use! DUH!

Ani   December 16th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

People are saying the guy that threw the shoes @ pres. Bush should get out of jail, that it's his right under freedom of speech, but if one of us threw shoes, @ a visiting leader from another country, we would certainly put them in jail & most likely, prosecute them. We tend to go overboard on everybody's rights but our own. I think the guy should be in jail & prosecuted, after all the money and blood we've given this country. How dare they try to humiliate our President.

Billy Montgomery   January 2nd, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Wonder what the USA would do if Juarez Mexico or Alberta Canada was lobbing missiles at the USA? Maybe they would say please don't or oh cmon stop pretty please stop. For one thing there is no such thing as a plastinian it is a made up name for a group of radical arabs!

Billy Montgomery   January 2nd, 2009 3:33 pm ET

I have come to the conclusion as part of the 76% majority of the USA that the 24% minorities have taken over the media both print and electronic and they are also taking over entertainment TV. Now that is raw, raw RACISM at it;s worst that of minimizing the majority!

Robert   January 27th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Rick is the most pro Obama newsperson out there. Apparently he thinks the past eight years the worst in the history of this great nation. It is easy to criticize Bush in the liberal circle. I can't understand how one can hate ones own country.

Rick: Please just a few words about 5.3 billion to ACORN

A lot more crooks would be bailed out that way.

The White House Briefing should be conducted by President Obama. This guy is putting me to sleep. Also the 500K cap on top executive is perfect. It reminds the CEOs that they have to perform better if they want to get paid more. And eliminate all bonus until we get out of this mess.

On another note all cabinet members need to check for tax problems. If I pay taxes, then we should all pay our shares and stop being forgetful on what they got as gifts. Create a web-site, to check if an item is taxable or not. Also, if the person that gets the gift does not pay the taxes, then the giver should be help accountable for this recovery.

Thanks

Rick
Todays I learned more about the realities of AIG than ever before.
I was very reassured by Edward Libby's performance and have more confidence that we shall survive this financial mess.
By comparison, I found the conduct of most of the politicians today
to be totally disgusting. They seemed totally incapable of listening and generally unwilling to own their own irresponsible behaviour in not demanding all this information months age BEFORE writing blank cheques for George Bush and Bernanke.
To have reduced AIG's risk by close to a triliion in the short time he has been CEO is truly remarkable and noone seemed to get it.
To me he is a true American Hero.
my worst fear is that these ignoramusses will sabotage his efforts.

What's the matter with you, Rick?
Want to be fair about 9/11?
I'll bet. Time to get real!
If Clinton had been intelligently focused on Al Queda and Bin Laden instead of Monica Lewinsky, 9/11 would not have happened. Bin Laden learned from Clinton's fiasco in Somalia – read his fatwas!! Get informed for God's sake!! Pres. Bush had to deal with Clinton's ineptness and inattentiveness (viola – 9/ll), clean up the mess, go after Bin Laden for real, and deal with the Middle East. Have you got the courage to show this? You are always so sure of yourself – lets see if you've got what it takes to actually learn something and tell the truth! I'm doubting you can do it. We shall see. Show this comment and prove to me you're not just another uniformed talking head afraid of the obama charisma hammer....I'm waiting. I suspect you haven't got what it takes. Uninformed blowhards like yourself rarely are anything but marshmallows. If you can't respond to, or show this message, at least give it to someone who can handle it.

Rick:

The only reason I watch you is that I'm on the treadmill and the club only shows CNN. They won't give Fox equal time even though we've asked. You lean so far left, I'm amazed you can walk upright. Once in a while you actually make a comment that's almost fair to the other side. But you're a pretty face and obviously a big hit with the party in power. Hope you can sleep well while your country gets deeper in the hole.

Carolyn Danley   July 13th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

You have to stand for something or you will fall for anything, therefore we all should stand for the rule of law. Without the rule of law we can compromise the masses for the few (who tend to suffer the most from this type of compromise).

June Smith   September 4th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Rick – THANK YOU! That jerk Reputlican from Oklahoma is exactly like you pegged him. Why did you back up – was someone there at the station pointing fingers at you saying – watch it! You had it right the first time and you said exactly what I would have like to have said to him. We're glad President Obama wants to talk to our kids – just like he raises his own girls – he cares . It seems like anything that he does is wrong. Healthcare – education – foreign affairs. It's lobbyist, big guys with money stirring up people that don't know any better. The republicans are included in that. They don't care what happens to our country – just don't want the DEMOCRATS to do anything good. IF I WERE THE PRESIDENT ABOUT NOW, I would be throwing up my hands and saying O.K. I'm trying my best to help us out of this mess – you won't let me – take this job and shove it .

I have always loved to listen to CNN but everything is getting so bad – bad mouthing everything the President does, that I can't stand to watch what is happening to our President. i WOULDN'T GIVE THE JERKS THAT WANT TO SEE HIM DEAD (LIKE THE PASTOR) one second of my time on air, that's what they want. It's so sad and he is trying so hard. It's almost tlike the Anti-Christ has appeared and we're all being sucked into what ever he (they) says. SAD, SAD, SAD!

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR STICKING UP FOR HIM TODAY. I KNOW YOU ARE SAYING WHAT YOU FEEL TODAY BECAUSE YOU AREN'T ALWAYS ON HIS SIDE. THANK YOU – I AM VERY PROUD OF YOU! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Ada Thornton   September 17th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Hi Rick, I think former President Carter is right on the money and I do not think he is going to back down from what he is saying. From watching cnn and other programs such as your show, Larry King and Anderson Dooper, some of their guest were not willing to admit that we have a major problem with race and it is worsen since President Obama became President. The beating of the lady on your show was racially motivate just as was the beating of the white student by a black student. There is racism on both sides. I am a black female, I have been around a long time and I know racism when I see it.
